vanjaar die leisels as skoolhoof by DeonGrobler oorgeneem.

Dippenaar het in 1994 sy eerste tree as on-

Dippenaar was departementshoof by

Appointments restore confidence in JBayHigh School

Welcoming the new HoDs KhuteleLangbooi (third left) and NaomiVenter (fourth right) to the schoolthis week were (from left) SchoolGoverning Body (SGB) membersJanet Dennis and BennettNapoleon, Kouga ExecutiveMayor Daphne Kettledas, SiphoMiggels from the EducationDepartment, SGB member BettieMoos and Kouga ANC ChiefWhip Virginia Camealio-Benjamin.PHOTO:SUPPLIED

Continued from page 1“The matter of the budget has been clarifiedand members of the district’s Supply-ChainManagement Unit visited the school to fast-track the procurement of textbooks.”

He said the Grade 8s and 9s had all but theirEnglish books.

“We are still waiting for textbooks for ourfirst intake of Grade 10s, but the teachers arewell versed in the curriculum and teaching iscontinuing. We regret the delay, but the mat-ter is being addressed. We do not expect thisto impact negatively on learners’ schooling.”

A former principal of Makukhanye Prima-ry at Jeffreys Bay, Miggels said the exaggerat-ed reports about the challenges at the schoolhad been a knife in the heart of hundreds ofparents, many from poorer communities, whohad fought long and hard for a public highschool to be established in the town.

“It was clear that the attack was initiatedby people who had no idea about the historyof the school or how difficult it was for parentsand learners when the nearest high schoolswere in Humansdorp. Negative reports of thatnature, which make no attempt at bringing so-lutions to the table, are not going to take theschool forward,” he said.

He said that while all essential facilitieswere just about in place, the school did havea wishlist to improve the overall education ex-

perience of learners. This wishlist includes an intercom system,

computers, lab equipment, sport facilities andgear, a school library and the technical work-shop.

“The Department will be addressing all ofthese in phase two of the school’s develop-ment, but we do not have fixed timeframes asyet. We do not want to see the school becomejust another academic school. We are gratefulto Kouga Municipality and other roleplayersfor the assistance they have offered in themeantime,” he said.

Kouga Executive Mayor Daphne Kettledas, who visited the school again this week tocheck on the progress, said she wanted to en-courage the local community and businessesto get behind the school and to assist wherethey could.

“For example, 40 learners will be takingpart in an interschool athletics event thisweekend, but they do not have sports vests inwhich to compete. If anyone can help them toovercome this hurdle, it will help to make theschool stronger.

“This school belongs to the community ofJeffreys Bay. Together we can take it for-ward,” she said.

Anyone who would like to contribute to theschool, can contact Sipho Miggels at 060 7647918 or email [email protected]

THE annual SPAR River Mile Festival is once again setto anchor Nelson Mandela Bay’s vast water sports calen-dar this month.

The 92nd River Mile, which takes place on the SundaysRiver at Cannonville just outside Port Elizabeth on Feb-ruary 20 and 21, traditionally welcomes thousands ofopen-water swimmers and supporters to its shores.

Race director Michael Zoetmulder of Zsports said thatalthough the event was a staple for local swimmers, ithad shown tremendous growth over the past decade.

“Ten years ago the race drew just over 500 entrants andin 2014 it topped out at 1 600.”

He said the extended two-day programme – which cul-minates in the SPAR Ladies’ and Men’s Miles – offeredevents for swimmers of all ages and ability.

“Children 12 years and under can enter the Kids Acrossthe River races and our veterans do well into their eighties.”

Apart from the swimming other disciplines included

the 5km Wimpy Family Run and the 10 and 30km OracleMedia mountain bike events.

“We recognise the need for family activities in PE and,as such, provide a variety of events during the festival,”said Zoetmulder. “It also allows us to offer a triathloncomponent.”

The River Mile supports the Smile Foundation andCleft Friends through raising awareness and collectingdonations.

The News Café PE Disabled Mile and the WakaberryKids Across the River races, which feature a specialneeds category, cater for swimmers with disabilities.

The Wimpy Rotary Kids’ Zone, Castle Beer Tent andstalls will provide festivalgoers with plenty to do and see.

Zoetmulder said they had selected an assortment offood vendors as well as craft and general stalls rangingfrom swimwear to art. Gates open at 08:00 daily and entryis R20 per person. Enter at www.rivermile.co.za or findSPAR EC in Action on Facebook for more information.
