Margaret Rawlins is a well-knownKnowle West resident who is alwaysbusy helping in the community, from being a street rep to workingat Eagle House youth club.

Recently Illminster AvenueNursery School surprised her inan assembly when they showedtheir appreciation to her forstanding up to a street robberywhich happened on NewquayRoad. The children sang songs toher, followed by a round ofapplause and loud cheering.

Inspector Foreman fromBroadbury police station present-ed Margaret with a certificatefrom the police force for hercourage and bravery when she

helped the young man who wasattacked.

Margaret spoke to the childrenabout what she did and said:

“I don’t expect anyone to dowhat I did…. I knew the peopleinvolved and knew what theywere doing wasn’t right.” Shelater told the children: “ All youhave to do is be good and stayin school.” We are all very proud of whatMargaret does in the communityand she is motivating others torespect the estate where they live.

Work on the new Knowle WestMedia Centre is progressing well.Archimedia, which is the name ofthe project run by KWMC to rede-velop the Old William Budd HealthCentre, has been going since 2003.Since then, a group of local youngpeople have come together to helpfundraise, design and generallybe at the centre of all decisionsrelating to the development.

A total of £3.5 million pounds hasbeen raised in order to rebuildLeinster House and provide a newhome for the Knowle West MediaCentre and provide space forother media related communityorganisations. Capital money tosupport the project has comefrom Bristol City Council, Urban 2,Objective 2, the South West RDA,Neighbourhood Renewal and ArtsCouncil England.

Designed by local architect WhiteDesign and built by Yate basedcontractor ER Hemmings, thebuilding will be completed byChristmas 2007 and open forbusiness by April 2008.

As part of the internal fit outthat will happen after the maincontract is finished, we haveraised money from Arts CouncilEngland to commission 8 artiststo put in pieces of work thatreflect the work of the mediacentre and its role within the cityand the community.

Currently over 90 artists haveapplied and working with artistin residence, Simon Poulter (whodid the ‘Knowle West Has SomeInteresting People campaign’) wehope to bring on some amazingpieces of work. Ideas include sig-nage, reception desks, conferencetables and studio doors.

Feel free to stop anyone and askabout the project, we’d love totalk to you!Young people from Archimedia Core Group

The building is built from 43straw bale panels that form theouter walls. Local people, staffof KWMC and a series of spon-sors went to Manor Farm inFailand to build the panels, which were then delivered to siteby tractor. They were thencraned into place and formedthe outer walls.

People who came out to the farmenjoyed a day of instruction onstraw bale building, lunch providedby the Better Food Co. and achance to build one of the panelsthat are now in the building.

WWOORRKK TTOO DDAATTEEThe old William Budd Health Centrewas demolished in February of thisyear and work started on site inMarch 2007. Since then, thefoundations have gone in, concretework for the main studio spacehas gone up, the straw panelshave been installed and windowsfitted, the roof has gone on andthe internal walls erected.Plumbing and wiring are going inbefore the decorators arrive tofinish it all off before Christmas.Deon Rossouw from E.R. always around to ensure thateverything goes according to plan.Community meetings are heldmonthly at the Novers Park SocialClub and are open to anyone whowants to find out more informationabout what is going on. Over the summer holidays, theArchimedia Project ran theArchimedia Summer School inconjunction with the BristolArchitecture Centre and theUniversity of the First Age. 18young people from the 6 localprimary schools spent a weekconsidering the internal look of

the building and putting forwardtheir ideas. During the weekthey looked at IT specification, colour palates, layout and ambi-ence. The Archimedia Core groupacted as peer mentors to theyoung people and supportedthem throughout the week.

News

Young people from theArchimedia project determined early on thatthe building should be:

• Fit for the purpose of a media centre• Fully accessible to all members of the community• Secure by design• Young people ‘friendly’• Have a low

environmental impact

This was taken on by the architect, who suggested we use buildingmethods such as straw bale con-struction, solar power, rainwaterharvesting and a woodchip boilersystem. As a result we will buildone of the most eco-friendlybuildings in Bristol and theSouth West of England.

Already we are being seen as anexample of how to build eco-community centres. Inside willbe offices, a 70 seater cinema /studio space, training rooms, meeting rooms, edit and produc-tion suites, as well as incubationspace and managed workspaceavailable for rent.

Why do we need the CCTV systemon Filwood Broadway? The CCTV system is used by thepolice as a tool to pick up incidentsquickly and gather evidence aboutthem. Remember that CCTV isonly as good as the policeresponse that comes with it.Between the period March – May07, we saw a decline in trouble-some activity on the Broadwaywhich was noticed and wel-comed by us all. Even so, theincidents included a headbutt

attack and a bus stop being van-dalised, as well as an attemptedsuicide and youths fighting.

Knowle Safe collates the recordedlogs from the monitoring centreand you can see opposite thepattern of incidents that has goneon in the months up to May.If you have a query about CCTVplease contact Knowle Safe - wecan call the monitoring centreand enquire on your behalf.

They came from St Phillips, St Judes and “The Dings”To a house with a garden, a playground with swings. The fields down at Filwood and all that fresh air,Our School with a nit nurse that looked through your hair. The dinner halls at Creswicke, the custard with lumps,A bread roll from Price’s, some chips and some scrumps.

Our “Head” Mr Russett, followed on by Mr Hughes,If you played up Roy Brimble, you’d go home with a bruise!Mr North used the cane, Mr Stuckey the dap,Then there’s the “Old boys” who put the school on the map.

Gordy Parr, Alfie Briggs and some boxers as well,Geoff Wilson, Bobby Fisher they all beat “the bell”!Malcolm Jones, Barry Doyle they all had their winsDon’t forget Matthew Copeland and those Davis twins!

Saturdays up the “Bug House”, the old thrupenny rushMrs Pearce with her shop bike…those black jeans were lush!Got your coal down the coalyard in an old beat up pramTook your rags down “Bobby Bennetts” for a treat of bread and jam.

And those characters…do you remember? “Stan the Man”And outside the “Venture”, Jack sold cockles from a van.Get your hair cut from Sid Elvins, he’d have you in tearsFor all he would use was a basin and shears!

Saturday nights down the “Venture”, Henry and Louis on the micHarry Andow asking for credit, Idwal saying “On yer Bike”!Playing skittles for money, a chance you might earn,Never play Roy Morgan, just watch, listen and learn!

Have a bet with the Hickorys or ole Mark Coyne,And there’s always the youth clubs that you could joinBroad Plain, Eagle House the Saturday danceFilwood Lads, Corner Cottage ( a chance of romance). The leaders, Vic Martin, Trevor Morgan we all knew,Bert Abrams, Miss Bazeley to name just a few.

The early morning specials that left Melvin Square,They were packed to the rafters and a “bob” was the fare. One went to Keynsham where they made all the chocs,The other all smoke filled went to Avonmouth Docks.

Bought your paper at Woodalls, remember the “hard times”A box of Englands Glory and those five Woodbines. With Brothers and sisters there’s one thing I dreadIt’s waking in the morning with the one who wets the bed!In my opinion for all that it’s worthThe people of Knowle West are the salt of the earth.

On Thursday29th August Iwent to tthheeCCuubbee cinema on Dove StreetSouth, to support a localphotographer,my friend CherylMartin (pic right)in a Bristolbased documentary investigatingthe works of six local artists.

It was fantastic, just like goingunderground. A small shady litbar area, seating inside and out.The cinema was small but comfortable. The documentary followed theartist named gHOSTboy illicitlyinstalling Street Art . Lady Lucyan artist with a child-like charm.Chris Fordwoh speed painting foreBay and an interview withNayanKulkarni a public artist, onhow he came to design the glassroof for the new CABOT CIRCUS.

We also had a peek into the inti-mate Spike Island Studio of ChrisBarr, but my favourite wasCheryl’s photos and interview, themusic was by Minotaur Shock.I didn’t understand some of it,but I’m glad I went. I will be onthe lookout for gHOSTboy’sworks and I can’t wait to see theglass roof in place. The film wasdirected and produced byPhillippa Daniels, a very talentedand lovely lady. Well done toeveryone involved!!

By the Project X and Surestartoffices at The Park, there is acourtyard which was all over-grown and no one could use it.Some young people from KnowleWest, along with staff fromProject X decided to make thespace somewhere that could beused by young people visitingthe offices. We decided to makeit more interesting and colourful.

In the first week of the summerholidays approximately 30 youngpeople came to the Park to helpProject X staff, The Park Staff andBuried Treasure to clear and decorate the courtyard. Some of the activities we enjoyedwere - painting pots, making

mosaic tiles, building a bench, making hanging baskets andpainting murals. We all had a lotof fun and the courtyard nowlooks much better.TThhee PPaarrkk tteell:: 00111177 99003399777700PPrroojjeecctt XX tteell:: 00111177 99003399880033
