ip Hop is not dead! Ive seen three incredible shows lately thatprove Hip Hop is alive. First, I saw my frst Paid Dues concert,

which was their fth annual. Good work, Murs! I love me someunderground Hip Hop, I just dont always make it a point to cover thoseevents. When I do go, its mostly to enjoy mysel and the surroundings.

This time I went and did what I do!

I had just seen Tech N9ne in Petaluma a ew days beore and he encour-aged me to go to the Paid Dues show. So I headed to L.A. and linkedup with my am Strong Arm Steady and Planet Asia. It turned out to bea long day, but I was having un so it ew by. It was more like a estivalthan a concert. There were indoor and outdoor stages and peopleeverywhere. I got to see some o my all-time avorite artists, Tech N9ne,Strange Music, Freeway, The Jacka, Strong Arm Steady, and The DoggPound, and shutting the show down was a vet in the game, Ice Cube.

There was so much excitement and energy in the building!

Ice Cube addressed the OGs and the New West rumors. Its very uglywhen rumors get started. I think the uneasy eelings just got a little outo control. To me, Ice Cube lives and dies or West Coast music. All theWest Coast bee needs to stop. Everyone needs to just do them, period, not add to the problems. I we all just do our jobs and not get upset overwhat other people are doing, well all be so much better o! Let yourmusic speak or itsel. Quit interrupting!

Help yoursel, real talk. Dont sit around talking about what other peoplearent doing or you. You might be blocking your blessings. I see musicvets pick certain artists. Sometimes you just dont make the cut, but keeppushin and dont stop. Real music and real artists cannot be denied. Itsa show and prove game. Take a gamble on yoursel beore you thinksomeone else should!

I also hit the Steppin Laser Tour when it came to the Bay at the worldamous Warfeld Theatre. That was another frst or me. I had never seenLupe Fiascos show. He was scheduled to perorm Kick Push back in

2006 at an independent record store called Moses Music in East Oakland. He was having a block party, and hundreds o people attended the BBQ.They were giving away ree ood and drinks and a chance to see Lupeperorm. But, beore that could happen, a young Latino boy was shotand killed right outside the store. It messed me up because the streetswere packed and everyone had been enjoying the estivities.

I always wondered how Lupe elt about that day, which was his frst timein Oakland. He expressed his eelings rom that day at the Steppin Laser

Tour and held a moment o silence or the unknown soldier whose liewas taken that day. He mentioned how emotional he was not beingable to perorm and do what he loves to do. I hope i Lupe ever decidesto visit East Oakland again, hell come see our East Oakland saehaven,Youth UpRising. Its a beautiul youth center, and they just installed a

skate park. I you ever come and see the kids, it would make a huge di-erence in at least one o their lives.

B.o.B., otherwise known as Bobby Ray, was also on the bill or the show atthe Warfeld. Ive been a an o B.o.B. since 2007. Hes a dope youngn andan all-around artist. Big ups to you and your success. The #1 single and #1album in the country. Wow! Research his Billboard stats. You showed ushow teamwork can create dreamwork! Keep living your dreams!

Speaking o dreams, yet another great act hit the Bay Area. Drake per-ormed in the Bay or the frst time. Man, as Im writing this, I just realizedI got to see some good shows while I was home! I love the BAY AREA andthe West Coast!

Now Im gonna rant about Drizzy real quick. Ive known about Drake ora minute. I met him a ew years back on Lil Waynes tour bus. Wayne says,D, take a photo o my next superstar! I said, Who? the whole YM campwas on the bus along with Jas Prince, and everyone pointed at Drake.I can spot a star pretty well, so you know I didnt hesitate. I remembertaking that frst photo o him. Now look hes one o todays biggestsuperstars! I watched him grow! I saw him on tour with Wayne and evenwhen he sang Bobby Valentinos part on Miss Ocer the arena wasroaring. Females were just head over heels losing their minds or him.

Now, the timing is great or Drake. Hes one o the YM artists that has tolead the way while Wayne is locked up. One love Drizzy! Young Money isa machine, not a rap label. Theyre an example o what it takes: patienceand work ethic. They all pay attention to how Wayne stays in the studio, his work ethic, and the way he constantly strives to keep his successgoing. None o the artists on the YM roster wants the rep o being lazywhen you have someone like Wayne just making money at all times! Hedoesnt sleep, he stays grindin! And he keeps his amily close!

The mind is powerul as long as you know how to use mind over matter.Mack Maine, I see you baybeeee! Keep up the good work! CMB/YM a.k.a.

Oil Money! Slim and Baby deserve a lietime achievement award, yaheard me?

I yall are looking or that new resh talent out o the West Coast, checkout Nio Tha Git. Google his videos! My avorite is Grateul. Dont sleepon him!

For the last our years, this West Coastrhymer has been a staple in the Bay Arearap scene. I just eel like its time or me

to expand, he explains. Weve done everythingwe can in the Bay Area so ar. I eel like wevereached that top level where theres nothing elseto do but expand.

Raised in the Fillmore District o San Francisco,CA, a neighborhood notorious or crime anddrug tracking, Big Rich began pursuing a rapcareer in 1998 when his rap group Fully Loadedsigned an independent deal with Done DealEntertainment. Done Deal was a label launchedby Charles Kelly and established San Franciscorapper San Quinn. Fully Loaded released twoindependent albums on Done Deal, but in 2005,the group split.

Ater the split, Rich teamed up with Kelly to

pursue his solo aspirations. The duo startedStreet Cred Music Group, landed a joint venturewith Koch Records, and in 2006 Rich released hissolo debut album, Block Tested Hood Approved. His solo debut eatured the single Thats TheBusiness, which picked up video play on BETand MTV Jams. The buzz surrounding his debut, ollowed by numerous mixtapes and collabora-

tions, made Big Rich o the biggest names in theBay. When you come out to San Francisco andsomebody asks whos Big Rich, theyre [going tosay], Aw, man, hes holding the city down. In theBay Area, Im involved in everything thats goingon out here. Ever show, every tour thats goingon, Im in it, he says.

Ater parting ways with Koch, Rich launched hisown label 3 Story Muzik in 2009 and releasedhis sophomore album, Heart o The City. Healso teamed up with Oakland rapper Balance

or a collaborative iTunes album called GoodAs Money. But even with a slew o music andreleases, Big Rich still fnds himsel a relativeunknown to Hip Hop heads outside o the Bay.And while West Coast artists like Nipsey Hussleand Jay Rock are being crowned Calis new kings,Rich is confdent his day will come.

Im absolutely still the underdog. Im defnitelystill overlooked, he says. Thats why its perectthat Im in this Patiently Waiting. Out o all theartists that represent this section o [OZONE]Magazine, Im defnitely a prime example o anartist thats patiently waiting. Ive been waitingor my turn or a while. But its kinda good, though. I dont want no overnight successes, cause that shit can go [away] the next night. When I get there, Im gonna be there or awhile.

Everybody knows youre a West Coast dude, but youve been movingaround a lot lately. Did you just need a change of scenery? As a whole, [artists] in the Bay Area are just content with where we are.

Thats just my opinion. I uck with a lot o dierent people around theworld, and Im out networking and trying to build my brand.

Do you think living in dierent places aects your style of music?I dont eel like I have a particular sound. Youre gonna hear a little South,a little Midwest, a little East, and youre defnitely going to hear the Westcause thats where Im rom. Thats the problem, man, everybodys caughtup in how youre supposed to sound. I aint caught up in none o that shit, man. Im me. I aint got nothing to prove. Every time I drop, I sell a substan-

tial amount o units, so Im good.

How do you think youre able to maintain that kind of fanbase without amajor label behind you and without having that mainstream look?Because Im out here networking. I built my worth.

Are you going to get out and start doing more shows now? You dontgive the people too many opportunities to see you. And youre in highdemand because of that fact.Im planning my 30-city tour right now. But beore I do that, Im buildingmy online presence. Im doing a radio show. Im on Twitter, Facebook, andMyspace. Im going to get out here and give the people what theyve beenwaiting or.

Whats going on with you and San Quinn? The beef was pretty ugly atone point but you recently mentioned on Twitter that you guys hadsquashed it. How were you able to get to that point?

People have dierent opinions on everything. Quinn had an opinion onhow he elt I shouldve handled some things, and I had my opinion on howI elt he shouldve handled some things. It escalated when the media andthe people grabbed ahold o it. You know how that shit goes. But mutualriends o ours have been trying to squash it since day one. Me and Quinnaint even talked yet. Things take time. Whenever he comes around, orwhenever I come around, we can sit down and talk. But or now were justgoing through our mutual riend rom the tur and just putting it all behindus. But really, it wasnt no bee - it was just two opinions being stated and

just how two men elt at the particular time.

Is there anything else that needs to be hashed out or are you just readyto move forward and forget the whole situation?I would like to do that, to just move orward and orget about the situation, but things take time. Wounds take time to heal, especially ones like these. So whenever we decide to come around and sit down, we will.

Why did you feel like it was important to squash it?The bee didnt aect me when it came to record sales or nothing like that.I do remarkable numbers independently anyway. It was just getting out ohand, and Quinn elt the same way. When shit like this happens, innocentpeople can get ucked up. So were coming together to let these kids know, and let the people know, were bigger than rap music. Were gonna put ourdierences to the side and move orward like men. That doesnt mean meand San Quinn are gonna hang out every day. You might not catch me atMcDonalds sitting down with the nigga eating no cheeseburger or noth-ing. But were defnitely gonna put our dierences to the side and squashthis shit like men do and move orward with what youre doing.

Is it your ultimate goal to be on a major label with your video all over TVand your songs all over the radio? Or are you more comfortable being intheunderground position youre in, still selling independent units?Im a street nigga, so the hustle is in me. Independently, I eel like this iswhat Ive got to do because this is what I know. O course I wanna take itto another level as ar as media, publications, and sales. But Im not gonna

just make commercial music and chase million-dollar dreams. Ive had pa-perwork in my ace or two million, three million. I turned those deals down

just based on what they want to take rom me and what Ive built.

What did they want to take from you? Publishing?Publishing. How many albums they want, what Im limited to do, just [giv-ing up] the reedom I have as an independent. They wanted to take thatall away rom me or that little amount o money. That ew million is a littleamount o money. I can make that in a year. Last year I released 100 songs. Idont remember how many albums - fve, I think. [I sold] over 50,000 at $6/unit, so that deal didnt look like shit to me. I defnitely would like to urthermy career but Im not gonna make commercial music tryin to chase thismuthauckin dream that might not even turn into reality. Im gon keepthis shit solid. I keep the people eeling like Im one o them, because I am.

Thats why Ive been so successul. Im one o the people they recognize and

theyre like, Im just like that nigga. Thats why my core anbase wont letme die. I aint did a show in three years, but Im able to maintain my salesand my presence through the internet, the publications, and the media.

Thats just a blessing. The ans wont let me die.

What project are you working on now?I just dropped Highly Aggressive Volume 2 yesterday. Ive got a documenta-ry and a soundtrack coming out called Gigantic, which is the untold MessyMarv story behind the rapper, the entertainer, the ather, the gangster.

Theres a lot o educational Bay Area history in there too. I shot and directedmy reality show Mr. Ghetto Celebrity. Ive got my clothing line comingsoon. Right now Im working on a new LP called The Cooking Channel. Im

    working every day.

You also seem to change your phone number every other day. It doesntseem like thatd be good for business.I got a 1-800 number that I keep steady or business. Thats on 24 hours soI dont ever miss the networking and business call. But when youre deal-ing with a personal line, youve got to keep the line clean and avoid thebullshit. Somebodys negative energy can suck up all the positive energyout o you. Ive got muthauckers calling asking or Sprint bill money andtelling me their bitch done ran o. I dont wanna hear none o that shit, man. My business associates and my homies keep my line. But everybodyelse, once they wanna suck the positive energy out o a nigga with thatbullshit, I change my number.

When you go out on tour, who else from the Bay do you plan on per-forming with? Whats your take on the current Bay Area movement?I eel like everybodys representing. Everybodys got a part they play,

whether its the old Bay or the new Bay. I just eel like were at a standstillbecause everybody eels like they cant leave the Bay Area. So everybodyends up with the same production and the same graphic designer doingtheir cover. That means everybody looks and sounds the same. Then youget everybody putting each other on the album, so youve got the sameeatures. Everybodys uckin with the same jeweler. Niggas are buying thesame outfts rom the same clothing store. Nobody knows who is who. Its400 muthauckin rappers and they all look and sound the same.

Do you think its lack of ambition or just being too comfortable?I guess everybodys comortable with it, and I aint knockin it. But Ima tellthe world a dierent story as ar as the Bay Area. But I aint mad. Every-bodys playing a part. Everybodys representing, and thats what it is.

Have you ocially changed your name to The Boy Boy Mess or is thatbasically just an alias of Messy Marv?I ocially changed my name to The Boy Boy Young Mess cause I ocially

changed as a person, as a whole. Im always gon be Messy Marv, but its thenew Mess. Its the Mess that got up out o that jail. Its the Mess that movedout o those conditions. Its the Mess that outgrew a lot o people in a loto situations. Its the Mess that couldnt get rich in the Bay Area and had tomove up out o that muthaucker to get his pennies. The new Mess.

Youve been pretty open in the past about your struggles with drugabuse. Have you moved past that?Yeah, Ive been clean or two years now, no drugs. I didnt go to rehab.Rehab is or weak people. I did mine based on discipline. I smoked the uckout o some weed, though, and had a drink or two, but as ar as the partydrugs, I dont uck around.

What prompted you to decide to quit?Just transitioning into The Boy Boy Young Mess and this new person. Thatcame along with the transition.

In retrospect, do you feel like your drug use was aecting your career?I mean, people have opinions. They say, Aw dont deal with him, he uckwith dope, or theyre scared to uck with me. I hate them putting out therelike that, but it never aected my career. It aected me, just because I wasindulging. But I had one o the biggest singles in the Bay Area, Playing WithMy Nose, just talking about addiction and having un with it and lettingeveryone know that Im not ashamed o being who I am. It was big. SnoopDogg even quoted me on the new album rom that song, so I know itreached a lot o people. I wasnt trying to promote drugs, I was just havingun with my addiction. But that shit is behind me. Ive been clean, Im doinggreat, and Im healthy. Ive got my son ull-time now, so I cant uck around.

SWAG & DJ REESEThe Recession is oveR

The frst mistake Seattle rapper Swag makes on this mixtape ismaking it 31 tracks long. Some o his music isnt bad (empha-

sis on some), but listening to 31 songs o Swag sounding like apoor mans Jim Jones, which isnt a compliment to his rhymes

skills, is ar rom enjoyable. Quite simply, so-so rapping, plusso-so beats, equals one so-so mixtape. Its good to know the

recession is over or Swag, but rom the sound o this, its hardto believe hes getting any rap money. - Randy Roper

With everybody waiting or Los Angeles to come back andrepresent the New West, listeners are missing out on the

resh voices the Bay Area (post-Hyphy) has to oer. One othese is San Fran representer DaVinci. The epitome o what it

means to be a street rapper, DaVinci oers stark and realisticcommentary on his surroundings and the people in it. Tracks

like What You Gonna Do and the money-themed Ben showthat he has he has verbal illustration skills on par with the art-ist he named himsel ater. While his attempts at making club

introspective title track Streetlights are standouts that showhis lyrical wit and ability to make eel-good music. Kurupt isan insightul MC with something to say. With the exception

o a ew uninspired tracksIm Drunk, Scrape, Riot In TheClubStreetlights is a well-rounded album. It displays both

vintage DPG music while still allowing Kurupt a chance toreect, in the manner youd expect rom an artist with nearly

20 years o experience. Randy Roper

    STNNAMANlegenDaRy

The Pack member Stunnaman has now released a solo projectwith a lot o quality songs. The Packs Vans days were nearlyour years ago, and you can hear Stunnamans growth as anartist on several songs including The Rain , Superman andNever Find Love. His music isnt legendary or ground-breaking,but at the same time, this street album shouldnt be overlooked.- Randy Roper

JCE, DJ LL WLL & DJ ROCKSTARameRican me

With 15 tracks boasting a solid ow and original production,Juice drops a lot o heat on American Me. Crush My Cool withBun B, the nothing-to-something tale on True Story, and his let-ter to Biggie, Time To Get Paid, are undeniable bangers. Theresonly one throwaway track (Focused).American Me wont leadlisteners to believe Juice is the new ace o America, but thismixtape is good enough to cosign him as one o the better newaces out o the West. - Randy Roper

    YA BOYThe fix 2

On this mixtape, Konvicts newest artist Ya Boy teams with 5DJsDigital Product, Woogie, Rockstar & Folkto present theollow-up to his 2007 release The Fix. But unlike this mixtapespredecessor, nothing really blows you away on The Fix 2. Asiderom So High, which eatures E-40 and Beeda Weeda, and Real

One with Yukmouth, this mixtape eatures reestyles and versesover beats listeners have heard 1,000 times by now (Snoops IWanna Rock, Ludas How Long). Ya Boy does get in good verseshere and there, but overall, TF2 does little to justiy Akon signingYB to Konvict. - Randy Roper
