The Florence Brown CommunitySchool in Leinster Avenue is proudto show off its improved schoolentrance to the community.

This is thanks to the Prince'sTrust XL Club at the school. They successfully bid for aNational Lottery Big Boost Grant.

This money enabled them to createa mosaic sign (pictured left) withMosaic Madness. Then theypainted tired woodwork andplanted some shrubs. Students, staff and visitors now experiencea much brighter entrance as they enter the school!

Anita Pearce and MargaretRawlins were both recognisedfor the work they do in our community, at the RESPECTCommunities event held atWestminster, London 20/6/07.

Also Margaret received an awardfor tackling a street robbery thattook place in Newquay Rd, whena young lad was set upon androbbed by 3 people.

Traders at Leinster Ave (“Jarmans”as we call it) have had enough. It seems that daytime drunkenbehavior is proving damaging totheir businesses. I am even told ofelderly shoppers being harassed. Of course Broadbury Rd Policestation is not exactly miles away! But I am sure that a lot of anti-social behavior is not reportedfor fear of recriminations or thewaste of valuable Police time.I think the increase in anti-socialbehaviour at Jarmans could havesomething to do with the installationof cameras at Filwood Broadway.Perhaps then, trouble is movingto areas with less surveillance.Maybe another camera might bethe answer?

Another problem: Being a busy shopping precinct, why are there no litter bins outsideJarmans shops for litter? An issuethat was raised before, over a yearago, but the traders say they arestill waiting for bins to materialise. Hopefully I will have brought yourattention to these local problems:raising awareness about thechanges we are going through inKnowle West.

Every time I go to the shops inMarshall Walk or to the MedeCentre all you can see is groupsof youths hanging around waitingfor their drug delivery. This is nofun for people like me; I am disabled and find it very difficultat times to get around them all. Not only that but the Inns CourtResidents Association (ICRA)cleaned up the area and had aseat installed along with railingsfor people to sit and meet upwith others. This has become ameeting place for a lot of youthswho leave it littered with rubbish.Yes there are CCTV camerasaround but this does not deter them.At the last ICRA meeting we spoketo the council about this area butso far nothing has been done. The police are not able to do much, but move them on to anotherarea to cause problems. Something must be done aboutthis for the sake of the local resi-dents and their children.Inns Court resident(name and address supplied)

The other day I was walking upConnaught Road, when I lookeddown Padstow Road and saw theSalvation Army. In all the 50 yearsI’ve lived here I’d never oncebeen inside…so I went in. Theywere just finishing their coffeemorning as I went in. Someonecame straight over to me andwelcomed me. I thought, “What anice place, friendly warm andclean.” They were busy cookingdinner, and there were a lot ofpeople there, men, women, andchildren of all ages. They help everyone, no-one’sturned away. I was surprised atall the things they have goingon. I was given a leaflet. I shouldjust like to say thank you to themfor all they do and keep up thegood work!Marguerite Jordan, local resident

High summer, or it should be bynow! Your flower garden, potsand hanging-baskets should be asweet- smelling riot of colour;but don’t forget to water andremove dead blooms to encouragenew flowers. How about your vegetables? Ifyou started early, many of yourcrops will soon be ready to harvest(later sowings will ripen inSeptember/ October). Early peas, new potatoes and baby carrotswill be jostling with spring onions, beetroot and other salads forspace on your dinner-plate. All home-grown, lovely! But don’t think that the best isover - or still growing in yourplot - how about sowing forAutumn and beyond? Early peas, spinach and carrots can be sownnow to harvest from October.Courgettes, butternut squash andpumpkins can be grown fromyoung plants (ready now inGarden Centres) and many saladscan be grown from seed in justsix or eight weeks. How aboutplanting some cabbage to provideyou with lovely spring greens? It’s also time to think about whatspring bulbs to grow, and planwhere, or even to plant pots ofhyacinths to be ready forChristmasHappy Harvesting!

The Disabled Christian Fellowship(DCF) Adult Day Centre on RuthvenRoad has installed a number ofwater butts to collect rainwaterfrom their roof to water theirnew gardens and allotments. Altogether they will be able tostore over 2,500 litres of waterat any one time and keepreplenishing it during the summer.

As rainfall becomes less easy todetermine, storing water is oneway to keep ahead of the gameand become more self-sufficient.It also helps to save water andcontributes to saving carbondioxide emissions at the sametime (processing water to makeit-clean enough to drink useslots of energy). And they willhave saved £3 on their waterbills for each replenishment!

So successful, a second bus wasneeded to meet demand, thebuses are totally reliant upon you!More young people are the targetfor the company, three local schoolshave used the buses recently togo on a trip to Clifton Zoo. The Police and Housingdeal with the worst cases, butmany residents simply don’tbother reporting problems wedefine as “nuisance” or “harass-ment”, and in Filwood most ofthis is caused by youngsters. As a parent of a teenager, I knowthat they need freedom, theywant to hang out and be withtheir friends. Parents may not seetheir kids for hours at a time andcan be unaware of the havoc theyare creating for someone else.Parents can just be at the end oftheir tether trying to keep controlof kids, always telling them “stayout of trouble”.

TThhiiss iiss wwhheerree CCoommmmuunniittyy JJuussttiicceeffiittss iinn.. It works like this:

SStteepp 11)) A youngster causes upsetor distress to someone – perhapsby damaging their property orplaying football against their house.SStteepp 22)) The victim recognises thechild and reports the problem tothe community justice circle. SStteepp 33)) A circle volunteer visitsthe parent, explains what hashappened and requests a meetingbetween the parent, child andvictim. SStteepp 44)) If everyone agrees tomeet, the community volunteerguides them through a discussion– why did the child do the asb?How did it make the victim feel? What can be done to repair the harm? This gives the child a chance toTHINK about what they do, andthe victim the relief of speakingout about what has upset them.SStteepp 55)) The child feels embarassed, ashamed, surprised and many otheremotions. The victim often feels aconnection with the child who hasbeen brave enough to come and speak.

SStteepp 66)) Often the meeting resultsin an agreement that the childwill repair something or do some-thing to help the victim. If thechild is very young, they apologise. We hope residents will not feel thisis a cop out – it’s really hard toface someone you have harmed. With trained volunteers from theestate, we want to respond quicklyand efficiently to anti-socialbehaviour incidents when theyoccur. We want residents toreclaim dealing with the problemsin Filwood, not wait for a policemanwho can’t be everywhere at once.

With a huge effort and lots offundraising, the lanes behindNovers Park Road are about tobecome officially Rubbish Free. After months of discussion withresidents we have a consensus

about what should be done andare currently installing 5 gates. This will prevent the easy accessof vehicles which drop rubbish atall hours and motorbike nuisance.

The Police, City Council Housing,Knowle Safe and the Safer BristolPartnership have all contributedfunds in a collective effort toimprove life. NeighbourhoodRenewal has paid for the cost ofremoving a mountain of debristhat has built up over years.

Residents are delighted and areplanning a clean up and streetparty in August to celebrate.Resident Chad at 127 said ”I’mecstatic, and I don’t mind keepingthe gate painted”.

I myself would rather go to a goodfield to play football but some kidsdon’t.

One young resident I spoke to said:“I have had people come up to meand my mates and moan at us aboutplaying on the streets. But theyprobably did it when they were little.’

Another resident I spoke to said: “Alot of the kids don’t seem to haveenough road sense. They walk rightin front of me when I’m driving. It’svery frustrating. If they paid moreattention to the cars, then maybe itwouldn’t be such a problem.”

I think playing in the streets startswhen you are young because you’renot allowed very far. If you want tohave a game of football with yourmates, there’s a tournament thissummer…see the events pages 8-10.

BRAND NEW SOFT PLAY FOR KNOWLETTIINNYY TTEEAARRAAWWAAYYZZRUN BY PARENTS FOR PARENTS

MMaakkaallaa CChheeuunngg Editor

Children are soon to get an exciting newadventure play area located in the heart ofKnowle at Broadwalk shopping centre, in theformer job shop. It will be a family run business venture, owned by a local couple, Kathleen andDaniel, who as parents themselves wantedto provide a fun and safe environement forchildren aged 0-9, to play and learn, as wellas somewhere for parents to meet!Wanting to be involved in the local communityhas been a major factor in the location ofthe business. Kathleen and Daniel felt thatthe area needed an action packed indoor

play centre for local kids and a high qualitycafe, with reasonable prices and a goodmenu selection. They aim to offer a low cost solution to par-ties, without comprimising quality: taking thestrain and the mess out of throwing a partyat home for the kids.Due to start mid August, they will be open 7days a week! To find out more, and follow the progressionof the work on this exciting new development
