Happy Mother’s DayWe hope all Mums are well and truly pampered on Sunday. At Noah’s Ark and in the primary school

this week, mums were invited into the classroom for our annual Mothers’ Afternoon. Noah’s Ark rooms were a hive of activity as both mums and children enjoyed special refreshments and played together. Each room provided baked treats for their mums, lovingly created by the children with a little help from their teachers. Koalas also made special natural fruit sorbets with help from Kalani West’s mum, Kelly. Mums also took home Mothers Day treasures lovingly made by their children.

Thank you to all our mums and grandmas for the wonderful job you do and we wish you a happy Mother’s Day.

Immediate Affirmation Produces Results Immediate praise for work well done is very motivat-

ing. It’s important to catch your children doing some-thing right. Not only do you want to affirm behaviour but also you want to encourage the character development that you see growing. Use words like, “You’re becoming very responsible” or, “I like the way you are learning to be kind.” Praise goes a long way to build good habits. It’s like sowing good seeds.

When my son Levi was four years old, we had a prob-lem with him complaining at mealtimes, especially when vegetables were on his plate. No matter what my wife served, he moaned. So we created a “Good Attitude at Mealtime” chart. It wasn’t fancy or elaborate, just a piece of large paper. We told him that when he saw what was for dinner, he could either say something positive or say nothing at all. If he did this then he would get a star on his chart. If he complained …, no star for that meal! We drew cute little stars with different colours. We put faces on them and hats. Levi loved it. He had so much fun with his chart that he would eagerly ask what was for each meal, just so he could respond correctly and get a new and different star. We told him that if he got 10 stars, we would give him a treat. The star chart helped us break the bad habit of complaining.

This idea is not just for young children who just seem to eat up our praise. Teenagers need praise too, and lots of it. Often the faults of older children are glaringly ob-vious and quite scary for us as parents. Try not to point out the things your children do wrong but the things they do right. Be determined to catch your teens or young adults doing something right and praise their character and maturity. You’ll be surprised at the results.

Strategy for the week: Look for ways to praise your children whenever possible. Don’t just focus on a child’s weaknesses. Praise goes a long way to develop a positive attitude in our children about the changes they need to make. Remember to not just focus on behaviour though. Tell children what you like about the character they are demonstrating through those positive behaviours.

Time to celebrate Mother’s Day again!! My thoughts go to all mums who are raising children alone; to those who are carers for children with a disability; to those whose children have a terminal illness or are fighting cancer or are in hos-pital. Being a mum under normal circumstances brings with it times of worry and concern let alone coping in the above circumstances.. However I have no doubt that there are also times of great fun and rejoicing. In all circumstances though we know that we can trust our ever faithful heav-enly Father to guide and strengthen us.

It was written to honor Nancy, a widow, who cared for her grown daughter Karen with a mother’s love and devo-tion. Karen had the mentality of about a 3-year-old. There are some mothers like Nancy whose close walk with God is the only explanation for their joy in motherhood. May God richly bless every “Nancy” in this world.

Happy parenting. And so it is. Maintain good relation-ships. Bring heaven to earth. Fear prevents, faith prevails. God bless. True meaning of Easter. Celebrate the risen Christ. Happy Mother’s Day to all our mums.

An incident that changed my life took place one night in Zimbabwe after we had just held an anointed meeting. Some friends and I were returning to the hotel when a drunk came in and fell down in front of me at the lift. He was unshaven, stinking and foul. I looked at him with disdain when the Spirit of God said to me, “The only difference between him and you is Me.”

God loved us when we were unlovely. True spiritual maturity does not breed arrogance, it breeds humility. Allow the love of God which has been shed abroad in your heart to well up and become a spring of life reaching out to those who so desperately need His saving grace. Without Jesus we are all in trouble.

Begin to see others as God the Father sees them. He loved each of us so very much that He sent His only Son to die on the cross - it was an awesome price that He paid for each of us. We are valuable to Him and should be to each other.

NAPLAN Test Dates(National Assessment Program; Literacy and Numeracy)

Attention: Year 3, 5, 7 & 9 ParentsWe encourage you not to make plans for the following

days May 9-12 as all students across the country in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be expected to complete national testing (NAPLAN) on Tuesday 10, Wednesday 11 and Thursday 12 May. Being on time to school is essential during this time.

Please ensure that there are minimal interruptions to your child’s life during this time and that each night your child is getting a good night’s sleep and regular meals.

NAPLAN is made up of tests in the four domains of read-ing, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

NAPLAN assesses skills in literacy and numeracy that are developed over time, through the school curriculum. NA-PLAN is not a pass or fail type test, but rather shows how individual students are progressing in numeracy and literacy skills against national standards for all Australian children.

All students are encouraged to participate in the tests. Students with a disability may qualify for special provisions that reflect the support normally provided to them in the classroom.

An individual student NAPLAN report will be issued later this year. Parents can use this information to monitor how their child is progressing and to identify any areas of con-cern. Parents may also wish to use their child’s results to discuss progress with teachers. More information is avail-able at www.naplan.edu.au.

Regional HockeyOn the 28th April, Jack Castles, Nathaniel Williams, Mai

Phillips, Bradley Harris, Jae Boston and Adelle Venter were selected to represent south Gold Coast at a regional hockey carnival at Hunt Park Labrador. The purpose of the day was to pick a team to play at a state carnival in Mackay. Occa-sional showers didn’t dampen our enthusiasm. Both the girls and boys teams earned convincing victories against Been-leigh District then faced stiffer competition from the north Gold Coast. The girls lost their first game 1-nil but held on for a 1-all draw despite having no goal keeper! We faced the added challenge of playing out of our preferred posi-tions and were unable to regain the excellent team work of our earlier game. In the end, north Gold Coast retained the trophy.

Congratulations to all the students on a great effort and positive attitude and thanks to the referrees and organisers for a great carnival.

District Cross CountryWith a beautiful sunny morning on Tuesday the King’s team

met at Pizzey Park for the Gold Coast South District Cross Country Carnival. The students competed well in fields of well over 100 students.

Five students qualified for the regional carnival by finish-ing in the top 10 and they include: 10yr - Tiffany Chavez and Sophia Muller; 12yr – Erika Chavez, Dimitee Coventry and Brandon Shiel-Butera.

Three of these students finished in the top 3 and received an age champion medallion: 2nd – Tiffany and Erika Chavez; 3rd – Dimitee Coventry.

Congratulations to all of our runners. We wish the runners competing at regionals every success.

Our next inter school cross country carnival will be the APS on May 17.

District Athletics Trial Nomination

The District Athletics Carnival will be held in Week 5 of Term 2 – much earlier than usual. As this is well before the college athletics carnival 10, 11 and 12 yr old students in-terested gaining a place on the college team to compete at the district carnival are invited to trial for a position. Students must complete a trial nomination form for the event/s they wish to trial for.

Golfing SuccessKanami Iwama recently finished 16th in the Queensland

Open Women’s Golf tournament over the holidays. Well done, Kanami!

Another two outstanding golf performances were recently recorded by King’s students. Dee Dee Russell won the pres-tigious Greg Norman tournament in her age group and has now qualified for the Australian Masters event. Ricky Ro fin-ished 2nd in his age group in the same tournament and has also qualified for the Australian Masters. This is exceptional work by these two hard working players and we wish them all the very best as they prepare for the Masters. Great work!

Australian Diving ChampionshipsMadeline Bone has recently returned from the Australian

Age Championships with a bronze medal in the 14-18 years synchronised 3 metre diving event. She also placed 5th in platform, just missing out on a medal by only a few points. At last month’s Queensland titles she got silver in platform and silver in synchronised. Madeline will now compete in platform, springboard and synchronised events in the school sport nationals for King’s. Well done Madeline. We wish her all the very best for the nationals.

SecondaryNational & Queensland Swimming ChampionshipsKing’s had six students qualify for the Queensland and Na-

tional swimming championships over the holidays.

Mikaela Rawlings swam at the Qld Scholastic State Championships, the age nationals in Adelaide and also the nationals in Sydney over the holidays. This outstanding lady finished with a ranking of 6th in the 50m freestyle in her age in Australia. She also broke the 100m freestyle record at the Queensland Scholastic Championships. Mikaela is on her first break for two years after training diligently up to ten sessions per week. What an incredible list of achievements!

Taylor Rawlings competed at the Qld school champion-ships and the age nationals. He finished the season being ranked 20th in Australia in his age in the 100m freestyle and 22nd in 50m freestyle. Taylor, also swum many PBs at these elite carnivals and he has had a fantastic season. Well done, Taylor.

At the Secondary School State Championships, Josh Win-nington competed in the 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke, 200m IM, 400m IM, 400m freestyle and 1500m open free-style. He swam a PB in every race and in the 1500m open freestyle, he finished 4th. He also swam a great time in his 400m free to win bronze and was selected to represent Queensland at the National School Championships in Mel-bourne later this year.

Over the school holidays, Josh also flew to Adelaide to compete at the Australian age championships. He swam in the 400m freestyle, 400m IM and 800m freestyle. He swam a PB in every race. He swam a 9 second PB in the 800m freestyle final to finish as the 8th fastest Australian 13 year old. Well done, Josh.

Adrian Gomm finished 22nd in the 200m breaststroke and 35th in the 100m breaststroke at the age nationals in Ad-elaide. He also finished 4th in those events at the Qld Scho-lastic Titles. Excellent work Adrian!

Sebastian Torales competed in the 100m and 200m breast-stroke at the Qld school championships, swimming a PB in the 100m. Well done, Sebastian.

Lachlan Sergis competed at the school state and swam in the 400m freestyle and finished in the top 10. Well done, Lachlan!

Hinterland District TrialsWe congratulate a number of our students who were suc-

cessful in making Hinterland teams last week.In the U/15 soccer Wade Dolan, James Ellins and Jayden

Reid were all successful.In the U/15 rugby Hayden Nagy was also selected.These four boys will now participate at the regional cham-

pionships this week. We wish them all the very, very best. Well done boys.

We would also like to congratulate the 20 students who attended these trials and missed out on selection. Well done, they made a valiant effort. Keep up the good work!
