Imaginations FiringSome of the children decided to make a cubby and used

their imagination amazingly well. Without adult assistance, planks and supporting bases were used from available playground equipment. Teachers were then asked for covers. Children used problem solving skills, working together to complete the project. What fun!!

Parenting with Power

Scripture of the week: This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. John 15:12

Drawing the Line on TattlingTattling is one way that children point out problems rather

than trying to make things better. It’s important to teach chil-dren what o#ences they should report to a parent and what they should try to resolve on their own or just ignore. Parents need to know when property or people are in danger, but much of the daily infractions or mistakes may fall into a grey area requiring discernment on the part of a parent and child. You don’t want to remove all reporting of o#ences because sometimes you rely on one child to help you know when another is in danger or in trouble. Sometimes a child should overlook an irritation and not be so easily provoked. If a child has tried to resolve the problem and the o#ence isn’t one to drop, then the child should report it to an adult. This isn’t tattling. It’s following a biblical model of con"ict management. The Scriptures teach that if a problem can’t be resolved between two people, then one should get another person involved in the process (Matthew 18). The way the o#ence is reported and the motivation behind the report is important. If you sense that your child is just trying to get the other child in trouble, then that report is motivated by sel!shness and is con-sidered tattling. As a parent, you have to be careful that children don’t use you to get the upper hand in their arguments with each other. Tattling is often an attempt to draw you in to rescue the victim and the way the story is reported to you often makes the urge seem irresistible. Unfortunately victims aren’t always as in-nocent as they make it seem.

You can use tattling to teach children how to report o#ences in an honouring way, without exaggeration or colouring the truth and admitting their own part of the problem. So the next time a child comes to you to report a problem about another child, you may want to ask, “Did you try to work it out yourself !rst?” If the child is just reporting a problem like a light left on or a toilet not "ushed, try sending the reporting child back to !x it. Like many issues in family life, tattling can be a great teaching opportunity.

Strategy for the week: For younger children, try teaching them the !ve !nger technique. When someone is annoying them they try to: ignore, walk away, say stop, say stop more forcefully, get the help of an adult if it continues. For arguments pull one child aside and give them some solutions. Send them back to implement those solutions. If it works they are learning to solve a problem. If it doesn’t, continue by pulling the other child aside and work with them. Arguments are problems to be solved and children can learn to do this once they get over their sel!sh desires.

SecondaryChristmas Thoughts

I came across these on the weekend. Thought I would share them with you. The Christmas Ten Commandments1. Thou shalt give thy heart to Christ. Let Him be at the top of

thy Christmas shopping list. 2. Thou shalt prepare thy soul for Christmas. Spend not so

much on gifts that thy soul is forgotten. 3. Thou shalt not let Santa Claus replace Christ, thus robbing

the day of its spiritual reality. 4. Thou shalt not burden the shop girl, the mailman, and the

merchant with complaints and demands. 5. Thou shalt give thyself with thy gift. This will increase its

value a hundred fold, and he who receiveth it shall treasure it forever.

6. Thou shalt not value gifts received by their cost. Even the least expensive may signify love, and that is more priceless than silver and gold.

7. Thou shalt not neglect the needy. Share thy blessings with many who will go hungry and cold unless thou are generous.

8. Thou shalt not neglect thy church. Its services highlight the true meaning of the season.

9. Thou shalt be as a little child. Not until thou has become in spirit as a little one art thou ready to enter into the kingdom of Heaven.

10. Thou shall not forget to share your joy, peace and faith with those around you.

Christmas, 1st Corinthians 13 Style1. If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of

twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

2. If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing gourmet meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

3. If I work at the soup kitchen, carol in the nursing home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

4. If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir’s cantata but do not focus on Christ, I have missed the point.

5. Love stops the cooking to hug the child. 6. Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the husband. 7. Love is kind, though harried and tired. 8. Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated

Christmas china and table linens. 9. Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way. 10. Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return

but rejoices in giving to those who can’t. 11. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things,

endures all things. 12. Love never fails. Video games will break, pearl necklaces will

be lost, golf clubs will rust. But giving the gift of love will endure.

Happy parenting. I wish you Jesus. A choice to make. Remember God’s esteem. Ideal Valentine. I’ll keep you in my prayers. Why/How. The Greatest. The joy of motherhood. Give thanks. Pray. Thankful hearts are happy hearts. Trust the Lord. Know who you are in Christ. Nurture compassion. Have a chuckle. Attitudes are habits. Courage. Recognise your heroes. A disciplined tongue. No strings attached. The Di#erence - Value. Random Acts of Kindness. Think real Christmas.

Farewell Year 12 StudentsHow quickly time goes by. Last week saw the !nal two events for

our Year 12 students. Thursday night was our annual Graduation Dinner – a wonderful chance for students, their parents and the College sta# to celebrate a ‘job well done’ by our graduates. This was followed on Friday morning with a !nal morning tea and ‘The Tunnel’, allowing our graduating class one !nal hoorah with the rest of the school.

As is our tradition here at King’s, each graduating class is given a name that epitomises their character as a cohort. The class of 2012 was called “The Year of Synergy”. Synergy is de!ned as ‘the cooperation of two or more to produce a combined e#ect greater than the sum of their separate e#ects’. Together, our Year 12s have achieved many great things, throughout their time at King’s and we wish them all the very best for their future pursuits.

First in Queensland in Mathematics Challenge

King’s Year 9 students came 1st in Queensland for the Commonwealth Bank Australian Maths Challenge. The trophy was awarded to Mrs Bevan in High School chapel last week.

TRACK TALK

What a year it has been. My time working with the students for this year has come to a conclusion. I must say I have enjoyed every moment of it. So much has happened this year, both good, and not so good, but mostly positive, but that’s the characteris-tics of a journey, and this season really has been a journey for me, one which I will certainly cherish.

Before I began this year here at King’s as the head coach for cross-country and athletics, I had a set of goals that I hoped to achieve by the end of the year.

I had hoped for our cross country team to improve from 8th place last year to be ranked within the top !ve this year. We ex-ceeded that mark and ended up 3rd. I had planned for our school to be ranked within top three at the Gold Coast South District Athletics Championships and we ended up winning.

But on the "ipside, I had also planned for our school to take out the APS athletics champs this year. Going into this meet we were clear favourites, and our students were looking good leading into it, but we underperformed in some key events, which turned out to be detrimental in our overall point score. But still, we came awfully close, but still fell short. I have my thoughts on why this occurred, and I will address it with our students and sta# before we begin training next season.

But most important of all my goals that I set was to ‘establish a culture change’ within the school towards cross country and athletics. I can honestly say that this is clear within our primary sector of the school. This I believe is due to a couple of reasons. These students regularly attended training; they became more competent technically in their event disciplines; they competed more con!dently as a result of the previous mentioned points, and thus, achieved better results than in previous years.

Unfortunately, for our secondary students, the culture change is still not prevalent, and I never expected this to be an easy task, but I do believe we will get there soon. If they follow the same path as the primary students took this year, great results will oc-cur. I know for certain that there are talented teenagers here at our school, as I have learnt that there have been many King’s APS sporting teams that have taken out premierships. This cannot happen unless you have a team that has a depth of athletics skill

and talent. So I know there are some cross country and athletics stars in the making here at the school, we just need you to come to training!!!

I have also been told that some of our students are leaving so to all you students who have participated in our running club and KATS sessions this year, I wish you all the best for next year. And !nally, to EVERY student and sta# member who I have had the pleasure to work with at some stage this year, whether on a regular basis, or only on a one-o# occasion, I hope you enjoyed your time working with me, and that you found it to be helpful and enjoyable.

Also, if any students would like to continue with some form of athletics training, I am o#ering coaching in the following ar-eas, outside of school hours. So if interested, contact the school sports sta# for my details:

Wishing you all the best for the remainder of the school term, enjoy your holidays when they arrive, and look forward to seeing you all again in 2013!!!

Yours in cross country & athletics,

~ James Clark, King’s Head Athletics & Cross Country Coach

Doers of the WordQuote from ‘Walk in Faith’ by Ray McCauley

What does it pro!t, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and !lled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it pro!t? Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”

James 2:14-18We have a responsibility to those who are in the body of Christ.

We cannot be all talk and no action! For instance, if we say we are against abortion on demand, (which we are) what alternative do we give a 14 year-old who is pregnant and abandoned? The church must provide homes and care for those in this situation. Do not say, “Be warmed and well-fed ... bless you and goodbye!” We must be doers of the Word. The greatest example of Christianity is to be a witness - not to talk like one, but to be one.

Today: Ask the Lord to show you just one person that you can help practically. It may be to give a friend a lift, to cook someone a meal, to !nancially assist a brother or to visit a person in hospital. Whatever you do, do it cheerfully as unto the Lord.

King’s Christian College has been selected as one of six Queensland Money Smart Teaching (MST) schools. During the next two weeks, students at King’s will have the opportunity to learn about consumer and !nancial literacies. The MoneySmart program, an initiative of the Australian Government and Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC), have developed a fully comprehensive curriculum to help students become !nancially literate. The age-old adage, why don’t they teach ‘real-life’ skills at school is most certainly being addressed as King’s takes its part in this exciting trial program.

MoneySmart is about teaching students to become smart when handling and making decisions about money, helping them become savvy consumers who make informed decisions. The subject of money is seen as a core life skill – money being a birth-to-death commitment. Students will cover topics such as: needs verses wants, donations, saving and spending as well has have practical opportunities to engage in fundraising, budgeting and small enterprise.
