High School Talent Quest

The annual King’s Talent Quest was held on Wednesday 23rd February 2011. The theme was country and western and the flannelette shirt was embraced by both students and teachers. There was even a mechanical bull!

The evening was a spectacular demonstration of diverse talent including vocalists, instrumentalists and danc-ers. The overall winners were Year 12 duo, Natasha James and Jiminder Bansal, who performed an acoustic medley of Firework by Katy Perry and Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars. These two talented students have beautiful voices and their harmonies captivated the audience.

Other prize winners were: Best duo: Josh Bell and Aaron Reid Best solo: Aleesha Drayson Best comedy: William Buchanan and Joshua Case Best junior talent: Tied between two promising young ladies - Tate Lindsay and Cassidy Fanning Best group: Joanne Ochsner, Kimberly Swensson and Lachlan HolmesThe quality of all the student performances was very high and the judges found their task very difficult. Scripture of the week: “For every house is built by someone but God is the builder of every-thing.” Hebrews 3:4

Playing Games - A Great Way to Practise Conflict Resolution

One positive way to challenge sibling conflict problems in a household is to play games with your children. Games are miniature scenarios about real life. Whether you’re playing a board game, a card game, or some kind of communication or role playing game, children have to use relational skills and, as a bonus, you spend quality time with your children.

Playing games can teach children how to win, how to lose, how to show mercy, and how to talk humbly. As you play games with your children, make sure you model espe-cially the concept of honour. Have fun and enjoy the game but avoid put downs, bragging, boasting, hurtful revenge, and meanness. That seems to be hard even for some par-ents these days.

Teach children how to win without being hurtful, how to lose without complaining, how to make a good move with humility, and show honour whether you’re winning or los-ing. Children need to see these things modelled in games so they can learn how to handle similar situations in life. Choose your comments wisely as you correct or confront others who may not handle themselves well. You may let some things go, but your comments are important and chil-dren learn from the things you say.

Strategy for the week: You may see selfishness and bad attitudes demonstrate themselves while you play games. Look for loving ways to correct while still en-joying the game. Play games regularly and continue to look for ways to communicate honour and chal-lenge dishonouring behaviour and words. You’ll be surprised at how much you can teach without your children even realising they are in a classroom.

Cool Kids and Healthy Snacks Go Together

Good lifelong eating habits can be formed in the first few years of life. Noah’s Ark children are learning first hand how tasty and appealing healthy snacks can be! Apple “Slinkies” and fruit smoothies have been on the ‘menu’ this week. Brayden from Koalas excitedly an-nounced to his dad...”We had milkshakes today!”.

Random Acts of Kindness

I read an article in the Courier Mail Weekend Magazine in December which was entitled “Little Givers” : A smile, a thank-you, a helping hand ... every day, in hundreds of ways, people are bestowing the gift of kindness. It tells the story of a few wonderful folk who go out of their way to help others and to brighten their day. This is something that as Christians, we have always been encouraged to do - to let Christ shine through us in our dealings with others. To take the time to make someone’s day, makes us feel good too. Having a heart to do this does not mean that we are a push-over who does not stand up for what is right.

With this in mind, I thought you may enjoy the following article.Bringing Heaven To Earth

I believe in heaven. I have for a long time now. With me it is not just a matter of faith either. I also believe in heaven because of all the evidence I see here on earth. I see this evidence not only in the glorious natural world all around us but also in the endless acts of love that come from the hearts of people as well. These are the people who bring a bit of heaven to earth everyday and they are the ones I wish to thank now.

To all the people then who pick up the trash off the ground and plant trees and flowers in its place, thank you. To eve-ry parent who spends the day hard at work and then goes home and makes the time to play with and read to their kids, thank you. To every kind heart who has ever taken in and loved a stray dog or cat, thank you. To every person who has ever opened their purse or wallet and given to a charity not out of duty but out of love, thank you. To everyone who has ever offered a ride, opened a door, or shared a smile with a stranger, thank you. To every good Samaritan who has stopped along the way to help a person in need, thank you. To every gentle spirit who has shared their laughter, encouraged a friend, or inspired another soul, thank you. To every single person who has tried to make this world a little better through what they do, thank you. And to every soul who not only knows the words “Love your neighbor as yourself” but tries to live them as well, thank you.

God doesn’t just want each of us to one day reach Heav-en, He also wants each of us to bring a little Heaven down here to Earth as well. Do your best then to love and be loved, to care for others and the world around you, to cre-ate joy rather than sadness, and to help everyone you can every chance you can. Do your best to let God’s love live through you. Then you will be ready for Heaven, because you will carry a bit of Heaven with you wherever you go.

Anaphylaxis Dear Parents,Across the college, we have a number

of children who suffer from life-threat-ening anaphylaxis. Although allergic re-actions to food are common in children, severe life-threatening reactions are uncommon and deaths are rare. However, for children who suffer food-induced anaphylaxis, the result could be fatal.

Children at King’s may have severe reactions to a variety of products, including, but not limited to, nuts, fish, milk, eggs and latex.

While we realise we can not control everything, we ask you to think carefully when preparing lunches and snacks for school, especially in the prep and lower primary de-partments, where children love to share. We ask spe-cifically that if possible you avoid packing nuts, peanut butter sandwiches or bars which contain nuts.

We thank you for your assistance in this matter. ~ Andrea Webb, College Nurse

Silver Medal at the National Open Water ChampionshipsJoshua Winnington travelled to Penrith in Sydney last weekend for the national “Open

Water 5km race!” Josh won the silver medal in the 5km race in a field of 30 competitors. He went out hard from the start, and held his position in the lead pack, right on the heels of the front swimmer. After about 1km it became a 3 way tussle between Josh and two other swimmers for the lead, and it remained this way for the entire race. With about 200m to go, Josh was in 3rd place by over a body length and then with a last ditch effort, he swam past the swimmer in 2nd and was closing in on first. By the time the two swimmers touched the line, Josh was only half a body length behind. It was an incredible race and all of his hard work in training paid off. Great work Josh. We will report on his results next week.

Regional TouchBoth Jake Myors and Travis Pearce represented Hinterland district at the regional touch

trials last Thursday. We congratulate Travis who went on to be selected in the regional touch team. Great work Travis!

Regional BaseballWe congratulate Yuta Ishii from Year 12 who was recently selected for the regional base-

ball team to contest the state titles. Kento Aramaki was also selected as a shadow player. We congratulate both players on a great performance. Well done, boys.

RowingEmily Carey has been in Adelaide this week at the national rowing championships. We

will report on her progress next week.

Winter SportLast Friday we began our season against All Saints. Unfortunately the weather caused a

cancellation of the fixture. The pre-season continues this week for our rugby and netball teams with an inter-college carnival afternoon. The venues for each grade are listed below and modified games will be played between 1.00pm and 3.00pm.
