Robert “Bob” McEwen

Born Robert Frederick McEwen on September 4, 1927 in London, Ontario, Canada to Robert H. and Gertrude “Dorothy” Heath McEwen, Bob died of a heart attack awaiting surgery at Kaiser Hospital Santa Clara on the afternoon of December 23, 2011. He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie “Midge” Russell McEwen of 61 years. They leave four children, Robert B. (Karen), Marion McEwen, Dorothy Koulalis (Rick) and Amy Gustas (Victor), 6 grandchildren, Janna, Quinn, Linnea, Cameron, Patrick and Grace and 5 great-grandsons.

After WWII, Bob went to the Boston Area where he earned his Airline Mechanic's license then met and married Midge in 1950. He served in the Army Reserves during the Korean Conflict. Coming West Bob took a job with United Airlines and was a 30 year employee.

In 1957 he moved his family to a small cabin on Kings Mountain in the coastal range of the Peninsula where they lived for 52 years. He was a volunteer with the Kings Mountain Fire Brigade, formally the men’s poker club, and the Kings Mountain Art Fair from its first show in 1963. In 1964, with the help of Architect, John Cole, he designed and built a lovely home on their property.

Even before retiring from United Airlines in 1984 Bob drove his old dump truck in the service of his community and neighbors. Bob's truck would be loaded with all the aluminum cans it could hold from the community recycling center and bring back $600 or more from each run. In other trips Bob would bring mushroom compost from the coast-side to neighbors' gardens for a small fee.

Starting in 1972 Bob and Midge had a shop of her silk screen work and then a gallery with her paintings and those of other local artists at Spanishtown in Half Moon Bay, CA

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, March 24 from 2 pm to 5 pm at the Kings Mountain Community Center, 13889 Skyline Blvd, Redwood City, CA. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Bob's name to the King's Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade, Inc. (KMVFB) 13889 Skyline Blvd, Redwood City, CA 94062.

WHO'S WHO ON KINGS MOUNTAIN

Midge & Bob McEwen Midge was born in Wellesley, Massachusetts. She has two older brothers.

Their father, who worked for a paper company, often brought home beautiful colored paper samples for the children. It was the beginning of an art career for Midge.

The family spent their summers at their cottage on Cape Cod Bay. They had a little rowboat and Midge's older brother taught her to fish. They caught mackerel, flounder and perch. The cliffs in this area have lovely clay. Midge and her girlfriend collected the clay to make figurines and dishes.

After high school graduation, Midge attended the Massachusetts College of Art for four years. Her first job was in the advertising department of a photography studio. She did layout and paste up. Later, she had her own studio in Boston and taught an adult class in Carnbridge on silk screening on paper. She and Bob met at a youth group at Christ's Episcopal Church Fortnightly Club.

Bob was born in London, Ontario on the Thames. He has two younger sisters. They were farm-raised. He walked three miles to school-"buns in the snow!"

Bob's father owned a Shell Gas Station and garage in Byron, Ontario. Bob learned to repair automobiles and farm equipment. After high school, he attended a technical training school for a year and in 1947 left London for Cambridge, Massachusetts where he joined the Air National Guard. President Harry Truman said: "We need a little help." Bob was notified of his activation 9/1/50. He and Midge were married 9/2 and he had a birthday 9/4. He moved to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri with his bride and from there to Walters Air Force Base, Texas.

Their first born, Robert B., was born in January of 1952. They returned to Boston, Bob was discharged from the service and their daughter, Marion, was born.

Bob interviewed for a job with United Airlines, got it and the family moved to the Bay Area in 1953. By preference, Bob worked the swing and graveyard shifts. During the day, he ran a small-scale excavating and truck rental business including auto and and farm equipment repair.

Two more daughters, Dorothy and Amy, were born in Redwood City.

In 1984, after 32 years with United, beginning as a mechanic and retiring as a foreman,' Bob began a brand new job, with a slave driver for a boss - Marjorie McEwen! He worked at her Art Gallery in Spanish Town in Half Moon Bay for 12 years. He built the displays. They attended the gift shows, ran a successful gallery and enjoyed this opportunity to run a business that blended their talents.

So, four children and five grandchildren later, they both said: "It's been a great trip! These are the best neighbors and the best community ever!"

In light of the recent passing of Bob and Midge we are reprinting this classic Who’s Who from the October 2002 Echo.

If you have lost or found an animal, call the number closest to your address or, the first number on this page. Volunteers, call each other with your report.

What To Do If You Encounter An Injured Animal

The Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) is available to help out in emergencies with both wild and domestic animals. They have an animal hotline you can call at 650-340-8200 (select option #5) to report that you have found either an injured animal that needs help or a dead animal that needs to be picked up. It is a 24 hour service; however, one problem is that there can be a long wait for help due to dispatch staffing issues. They will do their best to expedite your call if you tell them you have an injured animal that is suffering, but they strongly recommend that if at all possible you bring an injured animal directly to the PHS. They have someone on duty after hours as well as during the day -- therefore, you can drop off an injured animal at any time day or night. It is difficult to determine what to do while waiting for help as each situation is different. An animal in pain may bite or struggle. If it is safe to do so, try and keep the animal warm and as comfortable as possible. If transporting an injured animal do your best to move the animal without causing any further damage or pain. No one will fault you for trying to help -- time is very important and the sooner you can get the animal to the hospital the better. Once you get to the PHS they will help you bring the animal in to the facility. If an animal has died on a main road, try to move it to a safe place to be picked up. If the animal is on a busy road such as Skyline, please be cautious and careful. You do not want to become part of the problem by endangering yourself or others when moving an animal off the road. - Jan Ruby

Kings Mountain Community Center Rental Process

This is a reminder for residents of the Kings Mountain community who wish to schedule use of the Community Center (CC) for an event. The CC is for the use and benefit of residents of Kings Mountain. The procedure for utilization of the CC is dictated by the Policy of the KINGS MOUNTAIN VOLUNTEER FIRE BRIGADE (KMVFB) Board of Directors. The Board has an approved policy for the use of the CC (see User Policy), and specific rules are required for insurance purposes and to maintain the present tax status. Here are the general rules with directions regarding submitting an event request.

1. Anyone wishing to rent the center must be a member of the Kings Mountain Volunteer Fire Brigade (KMVFB). Annual dues are currently set at $35.00. (Note: KMA is a separate entity with their own dues.)

2. Rental fees are subject to time and use of the community center. 3. A contract is required and a deposit may be requested in certain circumstances. Events will not be

placed on the calendar until the contract and separate checks for the fee and deposit have been received.

4. For more details and to contact the Building Scheduler (Jan Ruby) please go to [email protected]. All information and forms needed to schedule an event are detailed at the http://www.kingsmountainonline.com website (see “How to Reserve the KMCC for Events” on the right side of the home page).
