Children Love HeroesIsn’t it interesting how children are

drawn to heroes? We think they love heroes for a good reason. Heroes are characterised by four things: they do what’s right, deal with wrongs, are honest and they care about others. Children love heroes because God has placed a conscience inside each child that prompts them in the same four ways: to do what’s right, deal with wrongs, be honest and care about others. Chil-dren are heroes in training right now in your family. God uses ordinary people to accomplish his will and it starts in the small things of life. We read in the Bible about David. David was a hero when he fought Goliath. But his hero train-ing started much earlier. David was a hero in the small stuff. He took care of sheep and learned responsibility. He fought off a bear and a lion and learned courage. He worked hard to practise his harp so that he could get a job working in the palace.

Right now, your child can be a hero in the small things at home. Heroes practise in daily life by taking initiative. You might try this. Ask your child to see something around the house that needs to be fixed or made right. It might be that dishes are left in the living room, a sad baby needs to be cheered up or the laundry needs to be folded. Once your child identifies something, then tell your child that this is the first sign of a hero. Heroes can see problems. The second sign of a hero is doing something about it. Challenge your child to take action to solve the problem and then praise the growing hero qualities. Heroes can see what needs to be done and then take initiative to solve the problem.

Strategy for the week: Try the “You are my hero meth-od” with your children this week. Tell them “ You have been such a lifesaver today. I could not have done all these things without my special hero!” It does not only develop a great character in your children but it also helps to get a lot of the chores done. Have an awesome term break.

Year 7 Prep BuddiesPrep students have been enjoying visits from the

Year 7 classes. On National Reading Day, our Year 7 buddies read

stories and at Mission Fest, they looked after us and helped us buy items.

We are looking forward to more days with our bud-dies. We think they are terrific!

Another eventful term has passed by. I pray that your child has enjoyed the term. I could not decide which of these stories to present to you, so I decided to send both of them to you. Take your time to read them while relaxing with a cup of tea or coffee. They are great stories, that appeal to parents rather than students.

You Can’t Keep Time

My watch broke a few days ago. The band snapped with-out me noticing, causing it to fall to the floor while I was doing the laundry. As I stepped back to grab another armful of clothes I heard a nasty crunch underfoot. I picked up the watch face and saw a spider web of cracks overtop the now frozen hands. I could see at once that it was beyond repair and sadly tossed it in the garbage.

Strangely, now that it is gone I find that I have no wish to buy a new one. Perhaps it is because in this digital age clocks are everywhere. They are on my wall, in my car, on my computer, and even on my phone. I can’t even turn my head without seeing what time it is.

I think that the real reason, however, is that as I have grown older my relationship with time itself has changed. While my soul feels as young and ageless as ever, time in this world has gone by much too fast. The little puppy I once held in the palm of my hand is now an elderly dog with arthritis. The little baby boy I once rocked to sleep on my chest is now a 23 year old man who is bigger than me. Young, vibrant, and energetic adults from my childhood have now grown old, gotten sick and even passed away. I can see now that, in truth, time can’t be kept. It flows on and on and carries us with it on a river of change. The days zoom by, our hair greys, our skin wrinkles, and our bodies wear out. No amount of looking at our watches can slow it down. All we can do is embrace it and enjoy each day we are given.

Earth isn’t meant for eternity only heaven is. Do your best then to spend each precious moment here in joy. Do your best to spend your days living, laughing, hugging, helping, praying, and smiling. Do your best to spend your seconds here loving God, yourself, and others. Do your best to make the passage of time on Earth a passageway to Heaven. ~ Joseph J. Mazzella ~

What You Can Give To Life

“I’m not sure what I want out of life.” Those were the words I spoke to my high school guidance counselor some 27 years ago. At that point life seemed to be a mysterious adventure that lay far beyond the security of high school. Little did I know then just how much of an adventure that next quarter of a century would be. It was full of ups and downs, joys and tragedies, triumphs and mistakes, laughter and pain, love and heartbreak. One thing is sure, though, I definitely didn’t get what I wanted. And for that I am eter-nally grateful.

You see, God in His infinite wisdom always gave me what I needed and not what I thought I wanted. If I had gotten what I had wished for I would be a far more selfish and far less loving person today. Instead God kept me growing, learning, and becoming the person I was meant to be. Life was my school, troubles were my teachers, and the twists and turns of this world were my courses. The classes con-tinue on as well for me, you, and everyone here.

These days I try not to think of what I want out of life but think of what I can give to life instead. I strive to be a loving father, a caring friend, and a good neighbor. I seek to do what I can with what I have to make earth a little more like heaven and to show others that they can do the same. I try to share all the things I have learned these past 27 years: that God loves us more than we could ever dream, that we can love each other as well, and that when we do so, we will have JOY no matter what struggles we may face or losses we may endure.

Take some time today then to think about what you can give to life. You are a beloved Child of God with unique talents, knowledge, and blessings. You can give this world so much love and do so much to help others. You can make this world and your soul a little better each day. And when you do so you will get what we all truly want out of life: sweet happiness.

Open Your Eyes!Quote from Power New Testament

One of the Holy Spirit’s jobs is to illuminate - to open our spiritual eyes. The Spirit’s job is to switch on the light and help us see the rich treasures of inheritance we receive. A coach has a similar function. Often training is mundane and repetitious. A good coach has a way of reminding his players what it is all about - the light of a big game at the end of the tunnel. One of the many functions of the Holy Spirit is to remind us that this life is just a mist compared to the great-ness of eternal life with our Father. The riches and blessings to come (our inheritance).

“My prayer is that light will flood your hearts and that you will understand the hope that was given to you when God chose you. Then you will discover the glorious blessings that will be yours together with all of God’s people.”

Primary Gold Coast Blaze Basketball Team visits King’s

Students in the Upper Primary were given a special treat last Monday when members of the Gold Coast Blaze visited the college and played against our Year 7 boy’s basketball team. Our boys set the pace by scoring the first goal, but any baskets after this opening one were hard work.

The afternoon was a wonderful opportunity for our students to see the local Gold Coast basket-ball team in action. It was fun and entertaining, with ‘Sunny Roo’, the mascot interacting with the crowd, as well as a great learning opportu-nity for all the students.

What did the King’s team think?“Versing Blaze was a dream come true. Al-

though we got beaten we still had lots of fun and learnt some new tricks.”

Joshua Sugars, Hadyn Swanborough and Isaac Ritchie“My experience playing with the Blaze was un-

forgettable. It was awesome to see one of our players score first, and then the Blaze players got serious. Our team was quite strong and we were able to score a couple of times. I will be able to learn from this experience.”

Denzel GargarThe Blaze stayed around following the game

to give out team posters and to sign many hun-dreds of autographs, much to the delight of the students.

Instrumental Music Concert

Instrumental music students delighted their audience at the end of term concert last week. Each of the college en-sembles had the opportunity to perform pieces form their repertoire. This is the one event of the year where all en-sembles come together for one evening of music with a combined concert.

The band program was represented by: Beginner Band, Wind Ensemble, High School Wind Group and High School Jazz Band. The strings program was represented by: King’s Fiddlers (Beginner Strings), Primary Strings and King’s String Orchestra.

This was a good opportunity to see the progression in out young musicians, as we moved through the evening from our beginner groups to our more experienced and accomplished musicians.

We would like to thank Mrs Guthrig and Mr Harden for teaching and preparing these musicians during the year.

Our next performances will include the College Awards evenings with the finale for the musical year being the Christmas Carols on November 21. A night not to be missed as we combine strings and band into the King’s orchestra.

15TH September 2011.Dear Rugby Parents,

The College has set new benchmarks on the rugby field this year. The 2011 Rugby season was one of the College’s most successful, with the U17 team being the first Rugby side from King’s to beat All Saints in the APS competition. The side went on to play in the finals and win the APS U17 Rugby Competition for the first time in the College’s history. The boys learned that success comes through commitment, determination and hard work.

Already during Term 3, there have been over 30 boys working hard in the gym in preparation for the 2012 season. The year 8 and 9’s have been turning up in numbers every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 7am, while the year 10 and 11 boys have been training on Monday and Wednesday mornings.

In order to build on this momentum, and better prepare for 2012, we will start a pre-season skills session in Term 4. This session will run on Wednesday afternoons from 3.30pm – 5pm, starting Week 2. The focus of these core skills sessions will be to develop the boys’ basic core skills of catch and pass, taking the ball into contact, support play at the breakdown and tackling.

All boys from grade 8-11 who want to represent the College at Rugby next season are strongly encouraged to attend all training sessions.
