4 traits of strong, emotionally smart families

1. Members come together regularly and enjoy each other’s company. A variety of Strong

Families Studies agree on one fact – that people in strong families come together either

formally to share a meal or meet on people’s birthdays and other special events; or come

together informally –they just hang out together.

2. People share their feelings, even unpleasant feelings, and they learn how to manage them

effectively. People in strong families connect on a deeper emotional level. When someone is

unhappy or miserable; it’s not ignored. It’s acknowledged and it informs how people behave –

whether to give that person space; provide a shoulder to lean on or simply cheer them up.

3. Family members care deeply about each other – come together through difficulty. People in

strong families draw together when the chips are down and crisis happens. Hardship galvanises

rather than pushes people away.

4. Family members communicate positively and show affection. People don’t always get their

communication right but there is a willingness to forgive the transgressions of others and to

look for ways to move forward rather than be stuck in the past.

KPS Olympic Walk-a-thon

Only one more week to go before our Olympic Walk-a-thon. Classes have been busy learning about the country they will represent and they will do the walk-a-thon dressed in that country’s colours. The Walk-a-thon is to raise money for our climbing wall. We hope you are going well filling your sponsorship sheets ! If you have lost your sheet there are some spares in the school lobby - please ask friends, family and neighbours to sponsor you for our Walk-a-thon, either a set amount or per lap. Good Luck!

Surprise Visit from Costa Georgiadis of Gardening Australia

Last Friday we were so lucky to have Costa Georgiadis, the landscape artist

and television personality, visit Katoomba Public School. Students from our

environmental group the S.Q.I.D. Squad together with our Koori Club Leaders

met with Costa in our school hall and then took him to visit our kitchen garden.

Costa was incredibly inspiring and his energy was infectious.

He spoke to us about water as life and painted clear pictures about our water cycle and the role the SQID Squad

would play in caring for our catchment area. He really loved the name SQID Squad!

Costa was impressed by our kitchen garden, answered lots of questions our students asked and he shared some

brilliant ideas from getting rid of weeds to building a rain garden.

“We can’t save the whole world but we can save our little part of the world” were Costa’s parting words.

Recently we have noticed that many parents/carers are parking in bus zones and no stopping areas around the

school when they pick up their children in the afternoons. There is also an increase in cars travelling at more

than 40 km an hour in Merriwa Street during school pick up and drop off times. Some parents have also

beckoned their child to cross the road to their car instead of using the school crossing.
