It’s Time to Try a TriBy Andy GallardoWelcome to the 2010 Los Angeles Triathlon!

Do you think a triathlon is something that is too hard for the average person? Do you think a triathlon is something for elite athletes only? Well guess again! Last October, we saw more than 800 physicians, employees, and health plan members thriving on the streets of Los Angeles. This year we want to reach 1,000!

It’s easier than you think, and we’re knocking $85 off registration fees to help get you started.

With proper training and guidance, a triathlon is something that most people can accomplish and enjoy! At Kaiser Permanente, we want you to be one of these people.

As a participant in the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Triathlon, you receive discounted entry fees and branded apparel, but more importantly, you’ll get the support and training you need from other KP employees, physicians, and members in your area.

Check out the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Triathlon website at http://kp.org/latriathlon for more information on training days, registration forms, and other helpful information. If participating in all three sports seems too daunting, then form a relay team with two other people and split up the swimming, running, and biking. All levels are welcome.

Participants can choose between two distances: Olympic distance (swim 0.9 miles; bike 24 miles; run 6.2 miles) and the Sprint distance (swim 0.4 miles; bike 14.1 miles; run 3.1 miles). There are also bike-only segments, as well as three-person relay teams.

Selected as Editor’s Choice for the number one urban triathlon by Triathlete Magazine, the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Triathlon is one of the West Coast’s premier triathlon events and the third largest triathlon in the world. Starting in Venice Beach, the event course travels through scenic Los Angeles past Korea Town, Disney Concert Hall, and other notable sites before finishing at L.A. Live.

Frequently

Asked

Questions

I’ve never done a triathlon before. Can anyone do it?With the right amount of training, almost anyone can do a triathlon. This is not Ironman distance; the Olympic and Sprint distances are very manageable given the right amount of training and some cardiovascular base (i.e., running, biking, aerobics).

What if I just want to do ONE of the events? You can form a relay team with friends, family, or co-workers, or you can bike. Unfortunately, there is no swim- or run-only category.

What do I do if I have never swum in the ocean?Easy… practice. Consider joining your KP colleagues in one of the many clinics at Zuma Beach and Redondo Beach.* Clinic info can be found on page 10.

What if I can’t swim?Find a local city pool or YMCA to take swimming lessons. Once your instructor thinks you are ready for an open water swim, you can enroll in one of the clinics.

What should my family do while they are waiting for me to finish? The race starts at Venice Beach and ends Downtown. See sidebar for more great viewing spots.

How do I get one of those cool Thrive jerseys? If this is your first time participating as a KP employee or physician, you will receive a blue jersey. If you have participated in previous years’ events, you will get something else.

Is there a special place for KP families to watch?Yes. This year we are excited to host a VIP finish line reception at the new ESPN Zone at LA Live. All participants wearing their blue or green thrive jerseys will be admitted. Each participant will be given two tickets for family and friends that can be picked up at the KP booth at the race expo. No exceptions.

Where should I park?Since the LA Triathlon is a point-to-point race, you can either park at the start and take a shuttle back to Venice or park Downtown (fee: $30)and take a shuttle to the start.

Do we get a discount for the race?Yes. Employees, physicians, and health plan members receive $85 off individual entries and $160 off relay teams using coupon codes (getfit2010 and getfitrelay2010).

You should head East on the 10 freeway and exit at Grand Avenue.Figueroa at Chick Hearn Court• : stand in the shade of STAPLES Center and LA LIVE while you cheer for triathletes nearing the end of their bike segment and into the finish chute. This is also the turn around point for the Olympic run course. You can witness athletes starting and finishing their run from this location with T2 adjacent.Disney Concert Hall• (Grand and 1st Street): also, the Olympic and Sprint run course. It overlooks a beautiful Frank Gehry design is the home of one of the city’s finest restaurants, Patina. Walk over to the beautiful new Cathedral or Museum of Contemporary Art just a block away.
