Call for applications for the Fourth Specialisation Course for Junior Prosecutors in July2019

We are writing to inform you that we have recently launched the fourth Specialisation Coursefor Junior Prosecutors on "International Criminal Justice and Judicial Coop>eration in CriminalMatters", which will be conducted in Siracusa, Italy from 30 June to 13 July 2019. The Courseis co-organised by the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights(Siracusa International Institute) and the Intemational Association of Prosecutors (lAP). It hasbeen made possible with the collaboration and support of the Intemational Association of PenalLaw and US National Attomeys General Training and Research Institute.

The Course is specially designed for prosecutors to gain expertise in the intemational aspects oftheir work and build professional networks. In the past three years, the course was attended by146 prosecutors from 51 countries, making each edition a great learning event that builds, yearafter year, a global community of colleagues.

This Specialisation Course is designed to highlight the most important synergies betweenintemational criminal justice, judicial cooperation, and the domestic prosecution of intemationalcrimes. Over two weeks, the Course will prepare domestic prosecutors to work on casesinvolving core intemational crimes and transnational crimes, and also offer specialised trainingin intemational legal cooperation, aspects of which include extradition, the transfer of prisoners,mutual legal assistance, the transfer of criminal proceedings, execution of foreign sentences andrecognition of foreign criminal judgments.

This Specialisation Course has been developed by leading intemational practitioners and jurists,including:

• Laurel Baig, Senior Appeals Counsel, UN Mechanism for Intemational CriminalTribunals.

• Baron Dr. Serge Brammertz, Chief Prosecutor, Intemational Criminal Tribunal for theformer Yugoslavia.

• Elizabeth Howe, President, International Legal Assistance Consortium.• Judge Jean-Franfois Thony, Prosecutor General, Court of Appeals of the Alsace Region

and President, Siracusa Institute.

The Specialisation Course will employ a wide variety of interactive, practice-oriented andexperiential methods to equip participants with the knowledge, analytical tools, practical skillsand proven techniques required to develop effective investigation and prosecution strategiesrelevant to their areas of practice and/or interest.

The Course is led by a Faculty with extensive experience in international criminal justice, theprosecution of transnational crimes and international legal cooperation (please see enclosedprovisional list of Faculty members). Each module builds on interactive lectures with practicalexercises and simulations. Participants can choose to attend each of the weeks, but are stronglyadvised to attend both. The Course culminates in a detailed case study-based exercise that drawson the advanced knowledge, practical skills and techniques that have been developed over thesessions.

The registration contribution cost for the two-week Course is €1,200 for lAP members and€1,250 for non-IAP members. The registration cost of either week one or two is €700 for lAPmembers and €750 for non-IAP members. All other relevant information about the Course and
