Fil-Am business leaders raise funds to save OFW on death row in KSA. Filipinos in the United States are rallying behind a mother who wants to “buy back” freedom for her son, an overseas Filipino worker in Saudi Arabia, who was sentenced to death by beheading for killing a local.According to a report on news site “Filipino Reporter,” a group of Filipino business leaders in the US are helping Letty Lanuza raise around $800,000 (P35 million or 3 million Saudi riyals) – the “blood money” needed for the release of her son, Rodelio (“Dondon”), who has been in jail for 11 years.
The group, led by Loida Nicolas Lewis and Judy Araneta Roxas, will “match every donation – dollar to dollar – the Lanuza family will get to save Dondon,” the report said.A separate article at Asian Journal said that as of December 6, the drive has raised approximately $13, 670 (P570, 000) in donations.
The 37‐year‐old Lanuza, who went to Saudi Arabia in 1996 to work as a draftsman, has been in jail since 2000 for allegedly stabbing an Arab national to death. While insisting that he did it out of self defense, Lanuza was convicted by the Dammam Grand Court two years later with a sentence of death by beheading. The family of the Arab eventually agreed to forgive Lanuza last February, but, as per tradition, they demanded “diyya” or blood money amounting to 3 million Saudi riyals for his life and freedom.
MANILA, Philippines ‐ Naniniwala si Sen. Miriam
Defensor‐Santiago na hindi maaring magpalabas ng
Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) ang Korte
Suprema upang pigilin ang Senado bilang
Impeachment Court sa paglilitis kay Chief Justice
Renato Corona.
tingin ko lang as a Constitutional lawyer, parang
mahestrado.Nabatid na hiniling ni Vicente Millora,
dating presidente ng Integrated Bar of the
To reach out to more Filipino Muslims worldwide, some 20,000 copies of the Filipino version of the Qur’an – including translation and commentary – will be published in Saudi Arabia for distribution.
The Industrial City Dawa Office in Jeddah, one of the oldest centers propagating Islam among expatriates, said this is a gift for Filipino Muslims.
“We’ll also set up a website on the Internet for this Qur’an project, so that Tagalog speakers all over the world can access this great work,” IDCO general manager Fuad Kawther said in an interview posted on Arab News.
The report said the new Qur’an translation, to cost SR45 (P526), will encourage more Filipinos to learn about Islam.
The center intends to print more copies of the 1,380‐page work based on demand. The Arab News report said more than 4,000 Filipinos have so far converted to Islam through ICDO over the past years.

E D I T O R I A L : Bagong Taon, Bagong Pag-asa by LEON

HEALTH TIPS
Bananas may fortify brain cells and are high in potassium, but too much of that nutrient can give you kidney stones.
Excessive alcohol consumption (more than 2 drinks daily for a man, more than 1 for a woman) can increase the risk of cataracts.
Reduce visual and other discomforts during prolonged computer use. Help moisten and lubricate your eyes by blinking and/or yawning. Do not rest your hand on the mouse when not using it; relax hands in your lap when not entering data.
If you always drink calcium‐rich food with phosphoric acid‐rich like soft drink, phosphorus will block calcium absorption
Consume natural foods high in vitamins A, B, C and E, with a dash of selenium and a pinch of zinc to supercharge your love machine. Specialists recommend squash, chicken, citrus fruits, egg yolks, whole grains and oysters.
When exercising or dealing with hot weather, avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages. Most coffee, chocolate, tea and soda drinks promote polyuria (excessive fluid loss) and systemic dehydration.

With the jail term, talks of a Pacquiao‐Mayweather superfight have once again come to a screeching halt although Arum said it could still be held late next year.Again, Pacquiao said during his television game show he’s willing to fight Mayweather in prison. It’s been done before. American light‐heavyweight James Scott fought 11 professional fights at the Rahway State Prison in New Jersey from 1978 to 1981.He became a contender for the world title while in prison, and according to www.boxrec.com, he won nine of his 11 fights in prison. Scott, however, was removed by the WBA from its rankings in 1979, saying he did not set “a good example” and that his opponents were at a disadvantage because they had to fight him in prison. At least four of Scott’s prison bouts were covered and broadcast by NBC Sports, CBS Sports and HBO, according to Wikipedia. Scott ended his boxing career with a loss to Dwight Braxton in September 1981, and finished with a record of 19 wins, two losses and a draw.He said he sent his adviser, Michael Koncz, to talk to boxing promoter
Bob Arum about the superfight.
MANILA, Philippines ‐ Top Rank chief Bob Arum said the highly anticipated Manny Pacquiao‐Floyd Mayweather Jr. superfight could take place in November 2012 after the flamboyant unbeaten American fighter was sentenced 90 days in prison for a 2010 domestic violence case. The earliest Mayweather could get out of prison is on the first week of March through good behavior. He had previously said he wants to return to the ring on May 5 although there may not be enough time for him to fight in May.
