    Brain $cans ?an 8etect 1ying

(HealthScoutNews) -- You know the old saying, "You can't lie to yourself"? Now,

brain scans show that adage is all too true

!n findings that could ut the lie detector #achine out of business, a new study has

found brain scans can detect when so#eone is lying

$esearchers used functional #agnetic resonance i#aging (f%$!) to track the brain

acti&ity of college student &olunteers who were gi&en a &ersion of the Guilty

Knowledge Test , a #ethod of interrogation freuently used by law enforce#ent

    officials

The students were given an envelope containing the five of clubs playing card. They were

told to hide it in their pockets and to deny they had it when asked.

The students then were placed in a fMRI scanner and "interrogated" by a computer thatshowed them a series of playing cards accompanied by the uestion! "o you have thiscard#"

*hen the students lied, the areas of the brain that lay a role in aying attention

and controlling error were #uch #ore acti&e than when the students told the truth

+he brain sections include the anterior cingulate gyrus, located dee in the brain

towards the to of the head, and arts of the refrontal and re#otor cortees, both

located in the &ery front of the brain

"It reuires more brain activity to lie than to tell the truth$" says lead study author r.aniel %angleben$ assistant professor of psychiatry at the &niversity of 'ennsylvania.Truth is the default position of the brain. Its harder to lie than to tell the truth becausethe first thing we need to do to lie is to suppress something."

The study was presented at the recent national meeting of the ociety for *euroscience inan iego.

o what does this mean for the future of catching criminals#

%angleben says more testing is needed$ but brain scans could eventually become the"gold standard" to refine other methods now used to determine truth and deception.

The most commonly used lie+detecting device now is the polygraph$ an instrument thatuses electrodes to measure physiological changes associated with nervousness$ such asincreased respiration$ heart rate and perspiration. 'resumably$ people who are lying aremore nervous than those telling the truth.

    40/114

,ut the polygraph is very controversial. -ritics say its not reliable and that people caneasily learn to fool the system.

Researchers around the world are eperimenting with newer technologies to developmore accurate lie+detection methods$ including analy/ing movements of eye muscles and

"brain fingerprinting$" a method that measures brain waves called '011. These brainwaves are triggered when someone sees something familiar.

2manuel onchin$ professor of psychology at the &niversity of outh 3lorida$ in Tampa$says looking for clues about lying by eamining brain scans or brain waves is fraughtwith problems.

In the eperiment using fMRI scans$ the researcher found the students brains reacteddifferently to the five of clubs than to the other cards. ,ut the study did not prove that thedifference in brain activity was the result of lying.

The brain could be reacting to the previous knowledge that the card had been singled out$onchin says.

"%ies are not being detected. 4hat is being detected is an emotional response to an item$"onchin says.

5nd he cites a real world eample. In the Guilty Knowledge Test $ suspects are askedabout their knowledge of some aspect of a crime known only to the guilty person and the police.

ay a wallet was stolen and hidden under an auarium. The police ask the suspect a series

of uestions about the location of the wallet. (Is the wallet in the cabinet# on the table#)

4hen the police ask if the wallet is under the auarium$ the suspects brain might responddifferently to that uestion. ,ut this could be because the suspect forgot to feed his fish$or because$ when he was a child$ he got into big trouble for knocking over an auarium.

"If you respond differentially$ you know the item has special significance$ but you dontknow that the person is lying$" onchin says.

5nother article on *'R shows that that compulsive liars have more connection in theirfrontal lobe of their brain.

I?ve seen my early /eal to learn and practice$ and potential to be a productive member ofthis ummah fade over the years as i spent my time D hours and hours in front of thecomputer getting up to no good. ome say its due to a lack of imaan$ and I agree that it is$ but its more comple then that. uring these years in which i have sinned I have alsomemori/ed E1 Cu/ of the @ur?an! that didn?t come easily$ nor without determination$ and iwould bet that is more than most people who are reading this. I don?t know if that makesme a AbetterB porn addict than the net porn addict. ,ut I?m certainly with those who areunhappy and want out as opposed to those who Cust don?t give a damn.

5s to solutions$ i don?t know. I personally think that it is nigh+on impossible to give it uphere in the 4est once you?re addicted because se and pretty women are all around you$

on the TF$ in the streets$ at work D everywhere.

isters$ your husbands go to work and there are pretty women all around. on?t let it bethe case too often that he comes homes to find you wearing some lame tracksuit bottomsand a T+shirt D or worse your paCamas.

4hat about taking another wife# I wouldn?t dismiss that as uickly as some do. 4hat pornography offers is variety! black$ white$ fat$ thin$ tall$ short$ all sorts. 'erhaps having asecond wife might satisfy a brother?s need for variety. 'erhaps not D i can?t say for sure.

4hat else works# Its a day to day struggle. Gne day its an ayah$ another day its a hadith.

5nother day its a talk. 5nother day its because you met a good brother. ometimes the boost in imaan from these things keeps you off the sin for a month$ other times$ only afew days.

    Cold urkey %olution

The most helpful solution overall i found was going cold turkey with the internet! cuttingit off completely. It severely restricted my access to pornography$ and though theaddiction didn?t cut off completely$ it was definitely a practical step in the right direction.
