Principles of SDN
SDN PRINCIPLES
Separate networking software in 4 layers – Forwarding, Control, Services and Mgmt
Optimize each network element
Centralize Mgmt, Services and Control layers
Simplifies network design and lowers opex
Adopt Cloud for elastic scale, usage-based pricing, and flexible deployment
Reduce time to services and correlates cost based on value
Common Platform for NW and Security applications and management integration
Enables new business solutions
Standard protocols for interoperability across vendors Provides choice and lowers cost
Broadly apply to network & security, ENT and SP networks, Mobile and Wireline,
Flexibility and new business opportunities

NODES
• Time to deploy new service is too long
• New service - New Box, New OS
• Scaling a Service – New Box/New Line card
• More space, More energy, More cooling, More CAPEX
• More OPEX to design, integrate and operate
• Shorter HW lifecycles, more procure-design-deploy, with little or no benefit
CHALLANGES
• Add and remove additional capacity in
minutes with elastic scaling as VM – reduces time to deployment and service
• Reduced CAPEX – less space, energy, cooling, racks
• Reduced OPEX – centralized management and provisioning of the applications
• Flexible choices – tethered vs router-integrated line card

SDN Controller
Use tunnel encapsulation for network virtualization on top of physical overlay
• Ease of migration (no need for replacing physical underlay) • Lower cost/complexity – supported as a x86-based VM, simplifies device-level complexity of physical network • Modularity, flexibility of software-only approach • Ability to converge orchestration across physical and virtual network system components (Contrail/Space integration, config, etc.)
