A Prayer for the NationAlmighty God, you have given us this good land for our

heritage. We humbly ask you that we may always proveourselves a people mindful of your favor and glad to doyour will. Bless our land with honorable endeavor, sound learning and pure manners. Save us fromviolence, discord and confusion, from pride andarrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our libertiesand fashion into one united people the multitude broughthere out of many nations and tongues. Endow with theSpirit of wisdom those to whom in your name we entrustthe authority of government, that there may be justiceand peace at home, and that through obedience to yourlaw we may show forth your praise among the nations onearth. In time of prosperity fill our hearts withthankfulness, and in the day of trouble do not allow yourtrust to fail. Thomas Jefferson

Prayers from the Mass for

Independence Day

Father of all nations and ages, we recall the day when

our country claimed its place among the nations. For what has been achieved we give you thanks. For the work that still remains we ask your help.

All-powerful Father, we rededicate ourselves to your

service, and to the works of justice and freedom for all.

As you have called us from many peoples to be onenation, help us to give witness in our lives, and in our lifeas a nation, to the rich diversity of your gifts. Grant thatunder your providence our country may share yourblessings with all the peoples of the earth.

Loving Father, your son Jesus spoke to people a

message of peace, and taught us to live as brothers andsisters. His message lives on in our midst as a task for ustoday and a promise for tomorrow.

We thank you, Father, for your blessings in the past and

for all that, with your help, we must yet achieve.

John Carroll, S.J.1735-1815

First Bishop of the United States

John Carroll was born in Maryland, the fourth son ofseven children. First instructed in the Catholic faith byhis mother, in 1748 he was sent to the Jesuit school of St.Omer in French Flanders. Attending St. Omer with himwas his cousin Charles Carroll, who was to become theonly Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. (John’s older brother Daniel Carrollbecame one of only five men to signboth the Articles of Confederation andthe Constitution of the United States).

In 1753, John entered the Jesuit novitiateand was ordained in 1761. He taught inEurope after 1761 and took final vows in1771. His happy Jesuit life ended, however, when Pope Clement XIVsuppressed the Jesuit community in 1773. John Carrollwrote to his mother: “The greatest blessing which in myestimation I could receive from God would be immediatedeath.”

John Carroll returned to Maryland, where he resided withhis mother. Since Catholics were forbidden publicworship, a chapel was built for him so he could celebrateMass for local Catholics.

In 1776, the Continental Congress asked John Carroll, hiscousin Charles, Benjamin Franklin and Samuel Chase totravel to Quebec to persuade the French Canadians to jointhe American Revolution.

The mission was unsuccessful, and Carroll wasexcommunicated by the local Quebec bishop for hispolitical activities. John journeyed back to Philadelphia, caring for an ailing Benjamin Franklin. Franklin wouldremember John Carroll’s kindness later when asked bythe Vatican to recommend a priest who would become thefirst bishop of the United States.

After 1783, John Carroll was a vigorous defender ofCatholic rights in the new nation. In his role as therepresentative of Catholics in the United States, Carrolloften wrote articles for publication defending the Catholictradition against demagogues who furthered the popularcause of anti-Catholicism in the United States. He foughtnotions of state establishment of Protestantism as theofficial religion, but he always treated non-Catholics withrespect, insisting that Catholics and Protestants shouldwork together to build up the new nation. An earlyadvocate of Christian Unity, Carroll put forward the ideathat the chief obstacles to unity among Christians in theUnited States were the lack of clarity on the boundaries ofPapal Primacy and the use of Latin in the liturgy.

In March of 1788, the Catholic clergy of the United Statesrequested permission from Rome to elect their firstbishop. Permission was granted, and in April 1789, JohnCarroll, S.J. was elected bishop of Baltimore by the

clergy of the new nation by a vote of 24out of 25. On November 6, 1789 PopePius VI approved the election, namingCarroll the first Catholic bishop in theUnited States. He was the bishop of all13 states. He was the only Catholicbishop in the U.S. ever elected byclergy.

John Carroll served as bishop andarchbishop of Baltimore for 35 years. He proved to be anastute leader while facing the innumerable difficulties ofestablishing the Church in a new, democraticenvironment. Greatly interested in the education ofyouth, John Carroll was instrumental in foundingGeorgetown University, the oldest Catholic university inthe United States. He encountered resistance as hepromoted the inclusion of women in higher education. He also encouraged St. Elizabeth Ann Seton to establishthe American Sisters of Charity for the education ofyoung girls.

Archbishop John Carroll’s death in 1815 was the occasionof a universal outpouring of mourning.
