Your Prayer RockI’m your little Prayer Rock, and this is what I’ll do. / Justput me on your pillow till theday is through. / Then justturn back the covers, andclimb into your bed. / And

whack! Your little Prayer Rock will hit you on thehead! / Then you will remember as the day is through/ To kneel and say your prayers as you know youwanted to. / Then when you are finished, just dump meon the floor. / I’ll stay there through the nighttime togive you help once more. / When you get up eachmorning, clunk! / I’ll stub your toe! / So you will thenremember your morning prayers before you go. / Putme back upon your pillow when your bed is made. /And your clever little Prayer Rock will continue inyour aid. / Because your heavenly Father cares andloves you so / He wants you to remember to talk toHim, you know.”

At the end of World War II,

United States soldiers in abombed German villagehelped the villagers clear awaythe rubble, and repair shatteredhomes. The big job was theruined church. Slowly theypatched the broken walls andthe fallen roof. One day theybegan to put together thefragments of a statue of Christthat had tumbled from the highaltar. When they lifted it backto its pedestal, it was almost

like new, except that they couldn’t find the marblehands. So at the foot of the handless Savior, they wrotethis poignant line: “I have no other hands but yours.”

Christ has no body now on earth but yours. No

hands but yours, no feet but yours. Yours arethe eyes through which Christ’s compassionlooks out on the world. Yours are the feet withwhich He is to go about doing good. And yoursare the hands with which He is to bless us now. St. Teresa of Avila

When Was The First Tabernacle Used?

The development of the tabernacle (Latin:tabernaculum, “tent”) took place gradually until itwas in common use by the 16th century. It takesits name from the Old Testament tent which wasused to shelter the Ark of the Covenant.

In the very early Church the agape (communalmeal) and the Eucharistic rite were closelyidentified. Soon, these two had been separated, with the Eucharist developing its own ritual. Bythe third century, Christians would take homewith them some of the consecrated bread toconsume on days when the Eucharistic liturgywas not celebrated, and they kept it in a sacredmanner in the home. This practice gradually diedout, and deacons or others (such as 12-year-oldSt. Tarcissus), would bring the Eucharist to thosewho were unable to be at the gathering.(St. Tarcissus was bringing the Eucharist to Christians inprison, when he was accosted and martyred.)

Sometimes the Blessed Sacrament was “reserved”or kept in the church, sometimes in the sacristy;sometimes it was placed in a “Sacrament House”or in a small moveable casket. In time, in ourLatin Rite (the dominant, Western, Rite of theChurch) people would come to the church to praybefore the Blessed Sacrament. Around the 13th

century Eucharistic adoration began, and that wasin the Western (Latin) Rite of the Church.

Then, in the 16th century, having a tabernacleplaced on the main altar became the norm in theWestern Rite of the Church. In 1863 Rome madethe norm into law for the Western Rite churches. (However, in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and inother great basilicas, the tabernacle was – andcontinues to be – not located behind the main altarin the middle of the church but in a side chapel.

In 1975 (after the 2nd Vatican Council’s call for areturn to the ancient practice of the holy Fathers)Rome issued a General Instruction, stating thatthe Eucharist was to be kept “in a chapel suited tothe faithful’s private adoration and prayer.”

The most recent official statement regarding theplacement of the tabernacle in Western Ritechurches comes from Pope Benedict XVI: “Inchurches which do not have a Blessed Sacramentchapel, and where the high altar with itstabernacle is still in place, it is appropriate tocontinue to use the existing structure for thereservation and adoration of the Eucharist. Innew churches, it is good to position the BlessedSacrament close to the sanctuary; where this isnot possible, it is preferable to locate thetabernacle in the sanctuary, in a sufficientlyelevated place.”

Why isn’t it necessaryfor everyone to receiveCommunion under theform of wine as well asunder the form of bread? At the Last Supper Jesus instructed his disciples: “Takethis and eat, this is my body. Take this and drink, this isthe cup of my blood.”

The Church teaches that “Holy Communion has a fuller form as a sign when it is distributed under bothkinds. For in this manner of reception a fuller sign of the Eucharistic banquet shines forth.”(General Instruction of the Roman Missal, nos. 240 in current and 281 in new Missal)

The distribution of Holy Communion under both kinds was the practice of the Church for more than athousand years. It began during the first days of the Church’s celebration of the Eucharist in fulfillmentof the Lord’s saying, “Take and eat.... Take and drink.”

However, the Church has always understood that one did not need to receive both forms in order toreceive the living Lord. It was never assumed that one received only the “body” in the bread and then the“blood” in the wine. In the early Church, the Eucharist, under the form of bread only, was taken to the sickat home. Infants and young children and the sick were often given Communion only in the form of wine.

Nevertheless, at Eucharistic celebrations, Communion under both forms was the usual practice. Thiscontinued until the latter 1100s when the custom of distributing Communion to the faithful under the formof bread alone began to grow.

Around the 12th century, a few Christian communities claimed that the faithful did not truly receive theEucharist unless they received under both forms. This teaching prompted the Church to look morefavorably on Communion under the form of bread alone. In 1415 the Council of Constance decreed thatHoly Communion under the form of bread alone would be distributed to the faithful.

Later, in the 1500s, as some promoted the belief that the whole Christ is not present under only oneform, the Church increased its emphasis on the ancient teaching: Anyone who receives only the form ofbread or wine receives the living Christ in Communion. Today, of course, the danger of that doctrinal erroris past, so the Church has resumed its insistence that receiving both species is “the fuller form as a signwhen it takes place under both kinds. (GIRM, no. 240 in current Missal and no. 281 in new Missal)

The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s restored the distribution of Holy Communionunder both kinds at the bishop’s discretion.

While it is certainly not necessary to receive Communion under the form of wine, the Church recognizesthat having both forms is a fuller sign and fulfillment of the Lord’s instructions at the Last Supper: “Takethis and eat..... Take this and drink.”

Different rites but one ChurchDear Padre,

I recently attended a Catholic Church where the Masswas quite different. The people blessed themselvesdifferently, and there was a screen blocking the altar. Was I in a genuine Catholic Church, and could I havereceived Communion there? Joseph

Dear Joseph,

The Catholic Church has various ways of expressing thesame one, holy, catholic and apostolic faith. These“ways” are called “rites.” There are some 22 individual, distinctive rites within the Catholic Church. The largestrite is the Latin Rite, which is also called the Roman orthe Western Rite; second largest is one of the EasternRites: the Byzantine Rite. There are numerous EasternRites. The rite that has been considered to have theoldest history is also one of the Eastern Rites: namely, the Maronite Rite. In the United States and Canada, approximately 98 percent of all Catholic belong to theWestern or Latin Rite. The remaining two percentbelong to one of the many Eastern Catholic Rites. Thenames of some of the other Eastern Rites are: theMelkite, Chaldean, Coptic, Ukrainian, Ruthenian,Ethiopian, Malabar, Malankar, Armenian, etc.

Since the majority of Eastern-Rite Catholics in NorthAmerica are members of the Byzantine Rite, it is likelythat you attended a Byzantine-Rite Mass: “The DivineLiturgy of the Byzantine Church.”The liturgy (Mass) of the Eastern rites differs externallyfrom that celebrated in the Roman or Western Rite. The

faithful, being served by the priest or deacon, receiveCommunion under both species (bread and wine) from acommunion spoon.

The Iconostasis (icon screen) is placed between the bodyof the church and the sanctuary, not to divide but ratherto unite. It is like a spiritual “ladder” uniting heaven withearth. The icons (pictures) are those of Jesus, the BlessedMother, St. Nicholas (patron saint of all Eastern Catholicand Eastern Orthodox Christians) and other patron saintsof the Church.

The cross used in a Byzantine Church has an extracrosspiece near the bottom. Historically, this must havebeen a footrest on which to nail the feet of the crucified. Legend has it that the Good Thief who asked for mercywas on Christ’s right-hand side, and so that side of thefootrest points upward toward paradise!

Eastern Christians make the Sign of the Cross, blessingthemselves from the right shoulder to the left. In theWestern Rite, both the priest and the people make theSign of the Cross from left to right.

The Second Vatican Council, in its Decree on EasternCatholic Churches, declares: “Such individual Churches, whether of the East or of the West, are of equal dignity,so that none of them is superior to the others by reason ofrite” (No. 3). Although each Catholic follows his or herown rite, each Catholic is always permitted to celebratethe Eucharist in the other Catholic Rites, gaining a deeperinsight into the fullness of Catholicism and the richnessof its tradition and customs.
