Welcome to Independence month! July 6th is Patriotic Sunday!

Thank You, Lord, for freedom…especially in a world where freedom is in short supply.

I am in my office working on the Gospel Lesson for July 6th…St Matthew 11:28-30…“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

At first blush, one would wonder how this text fits Independence month. Consider this…There is a statue that stands in New York harbor welcoming immigrants from almost every land on earth. We know her as the Statue of Liberty. Within the pedestal on which this great statue stands, is a poem by Emma Lazarus:“Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”

Today we, as a nation, may not be quite as willing to extend that invitation as we once were, but thankfully, Christ still extends His invitation to all who would heed it:

“Come to Me”

Happy July to you! See you July 6th at Sunday School, worship, and then the picnic at Svendsen’s!

See you soon!Pastor Dean

July Calendar

The GMG Community Bible School, “The Wacky World of Water was held the week of June 16-20 at the Garwin Christian Church and United Methodist Church. About 70 children attended and 10 adults and 3 junior high students helped kids dive a little deeper into Bible stories and God’s word everyday! Students participated in singing fun songs, Cold Water Crafts, Rush-n-Gush Games, enjoyed Splatterific Snacks and of course dove deeper into God’s Word. Each activity, even the food, matched the theme of the day. Students learned that

• God is all powerful and He created everything (Genesis 1:31),• God deals with sin but also loves us and will forgive sin that if we ask him (1

John 1:9), • God’s words tells what’s right and true (John 14:23),• God’s answer is Jesus, the son of God who wants to be our Savior (Romans

5:8),• God can be trusted in every situation. (Proverbs 3:5-6),

The week concluded with program on Sunday, June 22nd, at the Garwin City Park. The weather held out just long enough for the children to present the songs they learned during the week and have refreshments. Treats were provided by the Chapel Church, Christian Church, and United Methodist Church.

Memorial Day Service

Sunday morning worship continued on May 25 with a memorial service at Chapel Hill cemetery to honor all of the veterans buried there. The nurturing committee honored our veterans with a very appropriate service. Allen Burt welcomed everyone. Clifford Sams, who served in WWII, was a guest. Michael Burt read an account of Clifford's military service and of his trip to Washington D.C. as part of a group of honored veterans. Tammy Burt read "No, Freedom Isn't Free.” Claire Handorf led the singing of "Let There Be Peace on Earth.” Major Steven Svendsen, USMC, read the names of the deceased honored veterans while family members, children, and adults distributed the carnations on the graves. Phil and David Collins then played "Taps." This annual remembrance reminds us of the sacrifices of our veterans. Thank you to the nurturing/worship committee for planning the service: Allen Burt, Claire Handorf, Tammy Burt, Cheri Richter, Bill Backoff, and Philip Collins

Organization MinutesLCA

6/11/14 The Chapel Ladies Cemetery Aid met Wednesday, June 11, 2014, at 1:30 pm at the church. The meeting was called to order by president Connie Appelgate. She also led devotions by reading from the book, Pausitivity, take a Moment to Nurture Yourself. Roll call (how many places you have lived and where) was answered by six members. The minutes of our April meeting were read and approved. Correspondence was read from the Harriett Fleming family. The treasurer’s report was presented and placed on file. There were no bills presented. Old business: Connie Appelgate and Vivian LeVier will begin to work on the map of the cemetery plots. Vivian LeVier made and Kathryn Burt seconded the motion to pay Ann Proffitt $25 for putting Richard Svendsen’s name on the flag marker. Motion carried. Lynn Beichley will be contacted about making more flag markers as we have used all the blank markers. Shirley Svendsen and Kathryn Burt were asked to check on which flags will need mending or disposal before next years Memorial Day. Connie Appelgate asked about auditing our treasurer’s books, and who would do it. It was the consensus of the group we did not need to do it at this time. New business: The fence at the cemetery needs to be painted. It was suggested it could be painted as a community project or as a paid project. We will put an item in the church newsletter concerning the painting project. Committee reports: • Hiring - The Smith’s have been paid their second of

five payments. There were many good comments on how nice our cemetery looked.

• Flags - The center flag will be flown June 12 for Jo Svendsen’s funeral, and both flags will be flown on Saturday, June 14, Flag Day. The next day to fly both flags is July 4.

• Cards - Six to eight cards were sent. Funomics - Pay $.25 if you flew a flag on Memorial Day, and $.50 if you did not. President Connie Appelgate closed the meeting with “Things God Won’t Ask.” Our next meeting will be a luncheon at the Tremont Grille July 9 at 12:30 pm. Carolyn Kloster entertained with a quiz about Flag Day, and a “Shakespeare or Bible” list of quotes. Vivian Le Vier served a delicious chocolate dessert to complete the afternoon.

Respectfully submitted,Carolyn Kloster, secretary

Administrative Council6/1/14

An Administrative Council meeting was held on June 1, 2014, in the Fellowship Hall. Allen Burt, substituting for President Dan Steen, called the meeting to order at 12:00 pm, opening with prayer. Those attending were Pastor Dean & Marvalyn Kelly, Allen & Dee Burt, Vaugn & Carolyn Kloster, Randy & Susan Beichley, Stan & Sue Koster, Kathryn Burt, Nancy Peshel, Chuck Rosacker, Jeff Koster, Rick Bessman, Leon Lamer, Jim Fleming, Darrel Burt, and Cheri Richter. Kathryn Burt moved to accept the minutes of the last meeting as printed in the Chapel Chimes. Chuck Rosacker seconded the motion, and it passed. Treasurer Jim Fleming gave the church balance of $16,530.26. The basement expenses have been paid. Leon moved, and Randy Beichley seconded, to approve the report. Motion passed. Pastor Dean said the Marshalltown Christian School fundraising committee would like to give a ten-minute presentation during church June 8. The board decided to replace the Mission Minute with their talk. Pastor Dean’s summer theme is “Weird.” Leon Lamer, trustee, said they are working on guidelines for use of the church’s facilities. The Ad Council will vote on them at the next meeting. Leon also has an itemized cost for turning around Chapel’s sanctuary. He feels that the congregation needs to vote on whether to proceed with this project, and it needs to pass it by 70-80%. Vaugn Kloster thanked Stan Koster for reinforcing the handrail and steps that were damaged from snow. Darrel Burt said the PPR committee has given permission for the church service, including the pastor’s message, to run over an hour on special Sundays. Discussion followed that we do not need more rules; we just need everyone’s cooperation in trying to keep the worship service within the allotted time without jeopardizing the sermon time. Their committee will need to find a new church and Administrative Council secretary to replace Ann Jackson, who has resigned, effective July 31. Vaugn Kloster, Sunday School, reported that today was the first Sunday for the Jr. SS to have one class for all ages. Children and families were urged to attend Sunday School this summer. Discussion followed on having church on June 22, which is the Bible School program at Garwin UMC. Pastor Dean would very much like to have church that day. Dee Burt moved that church at Chapel be held on June 22 from 9:00-10:00 am, to give sufficient travel time to Garwin. Chuck Rosacker seconded the motion, and it passed. (Later, it was found out that VBS program is at 9:30 am at the Garwin Park so no SS or church at Chapel.) Kathryn Burt moved that we have regular Sunday School and church at Chapel on July 6, and then go to the potluck, games and pool at Doug & Linda

Svendsen’s after church. Leon Lamer seconded, and motion carried. Rick Bessman, Sunday School treasurer, reported a balance of $2,972.51. Randy Beichley, lay leader, said he would try to attend the IA Annual Conference next weekend. Kathryn Burt, witness chair, said their most recent activity was to honor mothers on Mother’s Day along with the YF. Because of trying to be more time-efficient during worship, it was decided to have Father’s Day recognition between Sunday School and church. Dee Burt, mission chair, is asking local people who have needs, such as outside work or lifting, to contact her as our congregation would like to help. The “No More Malaria” netted $1300. Carolyn Kloster, age-level committee, reported they have assigned the 4th of July’ committees for Svendsen’s July 6 party after the worship service. Allen Burt, nurturing committee, summarized the meeting which was held May 29 at Pastor Dean’s home. We should all be more expedient in transition times during church, such as walking up front beforehand so that the congregation does not need to wait for us. Leon Lamer wondered if we could cut down special music to one time a month during the summer months. The nurturing committee will discuss this. Sue Koster gave a hand-out prepared by Lori Somers, concerning the audio sermons online. The blog is free, but we need a recorder that plugs into the amplifier in the back and also a hosting site for the audio that can be linked to the blog. Leon Lamer moved to give Lori permission to purchase the needed equipment and a site, such as Podsnack.com. Chuck Rosacker seconded the motion, and it carried. Leon Lamer thanked Doug Svendsen for working with the telephone company to install the equipment on the west wall of the sanctuary. It is tied in with a television, which makes it possible to watch the sermon in the Fellowship Hall on the TV in there. Vaugn Kloster will contact the nominations committee to appoint a communion assistant to replace Lee & Patti Cornwell. Also, the LCA, who oversees the cemetery upkeep, lost three long-time members this winter, and they would like new members. He thanked the trustees and all others who helped put up, and take down, the flags for Memorial Day. Stan Koster thanked everyone, including the many committees and chairs, for their dedicated service to make Chapel a wonderful place to worship. The next meeting will be September 7 after church. Jim & LeAnn Fleming and Carolyn Kloster will provide the lunch. Allen Burt thanked Cheri Richter and her committee for providing a delicious lunch today.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:55 pm.Secretary pro-tem,Sue Koster
