Our Motto: Integrity, Quality, Friendship

By Ashley SchraderThe Laker/Lutz News Correspondent

Picture, if you will, patriotic table settingsspread neatly beneath rows of baked piesand cakes in the Lutz Senior Center.

The scent of these treats permeates thebuilding as the contest’s judges and formerLutz Guv’na Suzin Carr bite into the deli-cious array of desserts.

That was the scene on the Fourth of Julyas 44 entries competed in the annual cakeand pie contest during the community’sIndependence Day celebration.

This year, the auction for the culinary de-lights raised $1,100 — more than in recentyears, said contest coordinator MarilynWannamaker.

“I think the contest this year was a suc-cess,” Wannamaker said.

Danny Neeley, winner of the men’s onlycategory in the adult division, baked apineapple upside down cake to honor hisfather.

Wannamaker didn’t sample any of thesweets, but she had her eye on a couple.

“I would’ve wanted to take a bite out ofthe chocolate cake or Tracy Gaschler’s applepie,” Wannamaker said.

She was impressed by the detail of someof the entries. Cate Hancock used white KitKats, ribbons and sparklers to create an ef-fect that captured the most patrioticcategory in the youth division. She also wasthe Guv’na’s and judge’s favorite.

Wannamaker believes a change this yearto create a new category to split youngerkids from older kids gave the younger kids abetter chance to capture a ribbon.

Wannamaker, who plans to step downfrom her role as contest coordinator, saidshe enjoyed this year’s competition.

“I was very honored to have hosted thecontest this year,” she said. But Wannamakerhinted that while she may be stepping awayfor now, it might not be forever.

Pies, cakes raise $1,100 for local charities

By Michael [email protected]

The doctor is in.Cindy Perkins, a chiropractor who lives

and works in Lutz, won the annual LutzGuv’na race, a campaign for the ceremonialtitle where all the money raised goes tolocal organizations.

Perkins claimed the Guv’na sash by rais-ing the most money during her campaign.

“I was very excited, and I still am. I wasvery shocked, actually,” said Perkins, ownerof Back in Health Wellness Center on NorthDale Mabry Highway in Lutz.

Her campaign win was no landslide vic-tory, however. According to Eleanor Cecil, amember of the Lutz Civic Association, therace went down to the wire.

“It was very close. I really think it wasthe closest we’ve ever had,” she said.

In a campaign season where the five can-didates raised almost $9,500, Perkins edged“Papa” Jay Muffly by less than $10. The totalswere counted multiple times to ensure theywere correct.

The funds raised by all the candidateswill be distributed to local organizations. Inthe past, recipients have included BoyScouts and Girl Scouts, Friends of the LutzBranch Library, the Old Lutz School, the CivilAir Patrol, and the Lutz Patriots. Between 15and 20 different groups will receive grantsfrom the Guv’na race in a typical year.

Cecil, who has been involved with therace for about 13 years, said the money isonly part of what makes the Lutz Guv’narace special. The entire event is supposed tobe fun, and the candidates are expected toenjoy themselves while they work for thetitle.

And from what she saw, all five candi-dates — Perkins, Muffly, Liane Caruso,Jerome Smalls and Susan Gulash — did justthat.

“I went to many of their events and I re-ally think they had a good time with it, andthey put in a lot of effort,” Cecil said.

She noted they also worked well as agroup, hosting joint events to raise

money and supporting each other through-out the race.

Perkins said she enjoyed meeting thecandidates she didn’t know, and makingstronger friendships with the ones she hadalready met. Her campaign raised more than$4,000 of the total, and said the moneybrought in shows the positive impact of thecampaign on the community.

“To come close to raising $10,000 that’sall going to go back to different localschools and other nonprofits and charities, that’s fantastic,” Perkins said. “It really showshow a few people can kind of pull a com-munity together.”

Even though the title has been passed,Cecil said that the previous Guv’na leftsome pretty big shoes to fill. Suzin Carr, whohas been Guv’na twice, was very activein the role and even helped recruit the newbatch of candidates to replace her.

“She did more than just be Guv’na. Shehelped us out a lot and took the lead in a lotof things,” Cecil said. ”She’s really a phenom-enal lady.”

Perkins not only is ready to fulfill her tra-ditional Guv’na duties, such as attendingLutz events, she’s taken Carr’s lead and start-ed the recruitment process for the nextbatch of candidates.

“I’ve already started trying to talk somepeople into doing it next year,” she said.

Businesses or organizations in the Lutzcommunity are welcome to apply for agrant as long as they are designated as anonprofit and are not affiliated with a reli-gious organization.

For more information on how to apply, e-mail Eleanor Cecil at [email protected].

DENTAL BITESThere have been so many changes in how dentistry is practiced since we opened ourdental office 25 years ago in Land O’ Lakes. We want to use this dedicated space inThe Laker and Lutz News to answer questions we are frequently asked and to sharewith you information about new innovations that make dentistry pain free and affordable.

What should I do if I knock a tooth out?

With proper emergency treatment, a permanent tooth that has been knockedout of its socket can be successfully replanted and last for years. The sooner thetooth is replaced, the greater the likelihood it will survive. Ideally get to your dentistwithin 30 minutes.

Find the tooth; do NOT handle it by the root. If it is dirty gently rinse the tooth incool water, do NOT scrub or use soap. Do not wrap in tissue or attempt to dry off.Replace it in the socket if possible, holding it in with your finger or light bitingpressure. If the tooth cannot be reinserted in the socket, place it in the cheek.Placing the tooth in milk is recommended if it cannot be left in the mouth. Do notallow tooth to dry out. Arrange to get to your dentist as soon as possible.

Learning more about the Moore you know

Bob Moore is the kind of guy thatlikes to stay out of the way in theParadise Lakes home he shares

with wife Nancy. He paints, he sculpts. Hecollects stamps. And he makes regular tripsback home to Canada to see his family.

But Moore, however, has had a tough timestaying out of the way of history. He served39 years with the Canadian armed forces, signing up when he was just 17 just a fewyears after World War II. And along the wayhe ensured one Olympic Games in Montrealwas properly supplied, and he designed acoat of arms for a military school that waspersonally signed off by Queen Elizabeth II.

Oh, and he won the Nobel Peace prize, too.

“I was part of one of the first peacekeep-ing operations in history,” Moore said, notminding at all that he’s shared this storymany times before. “We were told that wewould join a force of U.N. soldiers three daysbefore Christmas. I barely had time to spendthe holidays with my family.”

It was 1956, and Egyptian presidentGamal Abdel Nasser had taken control of theSuez Canal, a 120-mile artificial waterway thatallows ships to travel between Europe andeastern Asia without having to sail aroundAfrica.

The United Kingdom and France didn’ttake the naturalization well, since they had a100-year lease, and they joined forces withIsrael to try and take back the waterway.

The United Nations knew something had

to be done to prevent all-outwar in the Middle East. So itpulled together military troopsfrom nations that weren’t di-rectly involved in the conflict, like Canada, and sent them into help calm the situationdown.

“We got to Halifax, and weboarded the HMCSMagnificent,” Moore said. “Itwas an aircraft carrier, butthere was no aircraft for thisvoyage. Instead, the deck wasstrewn with all this equip-ment, and about 6,000 soldiersfrom 11 different countries.”

When the Magnificent ar-rived at the Suez Canal, Mooresaid he was shocked at whatsoldiers found. Nasser hadblocked access to the canal bysinking a large number ofships at the entrance.

“I got there and looked from the deck ofthe aircraft carrier, and counted 36 sunkenships,” Moore said.

He was part of a contingent of troops thatmade their way across the Sinai Desert, fol-lowing retreating Israeli forces. The trip washard through the desert, especially sinceIsrael was destroying roads and buildings onits way back.

The Israelis spared an old British air forcebase, which Moore camped out in for sometime. It was riddled with bullet holes, and didnot have much of a roof. At night, it wouldget cold, so they would use debris from thebuilding to keep the fire going.

“When we ran out of wood there, weended up burning the chairs we were sittingin,” Moore said.

In 1988, the Norwegian Nobel Committeedecided to give its Peace Prize to U.N.Peacekeeping forces. As part of that initialforce, Moore received a small medallion cele-brating the honor, which was later pinned to

him in a ceremony that included PascoCounty commissioner Pat Mulieri.

In his time traveling around the world,Moore picked up five languages, includingSwahili, although he still doesn’t feel com-pletely comfortable with French. He raisedtwo sons on his own after his first wife died.Dwayne became a scientist and is now partowner of an environmental company inMaine, while Michael followed his father intothe military, and is still there today.

Moore retired in 1991 when he was 57,and almost immediately found a home inPasco County.

“I was always a nudist, and I was lookingfor some place where people lived who be-lieved in the same,” Moore said.

He met Nancy while visiting ParadiseLakes from his then New Port Richey home, and they settled into their own condo atParadise Lakes in 1998.

Moore may have accomplished a lot in hislife, but he’s even prouder of what his chil-dren and grandchildren have accomplished,

including one who just graduated from col-lege.

“You’re nothing without education,”Moore said. “You got to have it, or you’ll beout there digging ditches and painting build-ings. I mean, there’s nothing wrong withbeing a tradesman if that’s what you want todo, but it shouldn’t be what you have to do.”

He doesn’t actively sell his artwork, but ifpeople want it, he’s willing to hear a price.Moore comes from a family with a strongartistic background; many of his siblings areartists, as well. In fact, a portrait painted byhis brother featuring his mother and father, that had been on public display for years inCanada, hangs in his front foyer.

“Doing art was just a no-brainer for me,”he said. “It’s a way to express myself, and toshare the beauty of the world with theworld.”

MICHAEL HINMAN/STAFF PHOTOBob Moore, who retired to Paradise Lakes years ago, shows off a coat of arms he designed for the RegionalCadet Instructor School in Ontario, where he was a com-mander. This particular copy was signed off and approvedby Queen Elizabeth II.

Who is the best A/C manufacturer?Surprising to many, the top 20 brands are made by just eight manufacturers. There is almost no difference in quality and performance between same-levelunits made by Carrier, Trane, Rheem, Lennox, Amana, Bryant or Goodman.

All units come in a box with a compressor, coil and condenser. It’s the installa-tion team who assembles the unit at your home who makes the difference.HVAC professionals agree that proper installation and maintenance are moreimportant to the performance of an A/C system, than the unit itself.

100% Satisfaction Guarantee*We guarantee 100% satisfaction with equipment operations. We will correctany problem within the first 180 days of installation, and if you are still not satisfied, will remove the system and refund your money in full.*applies to elite systems only

We love LucyLucy is the cutest Pomeranian her owner has ever seen. She is so sweetand loving to everyone and everything. Her owners cannot take her for awalk without someone giving her goo-goo eyes, and she eats all the atten-tion up. But what makes her super special is her feisty spirit and boldness.Lucy may look like a foo foo lap dog, but she is anything but. She loves hik-ing in the woods, chasing squirrels, protecting the house from lizards, jump-ing in the oceans, and playing in rain puddles. Family includes Jeremy andKim Biedler of Land O’ Lakes.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

The Laker/Lutz News has earned two topawards from the Florida Press Association.

During its annual conference July 11 inCoral Gables, the association awarded TheLaker news editor Michael Hinman with twofirst place prizes in local government report-ing and general news.

The local government award was basedon a series of stories in 2013 about the now-cancelled elevated toll road project that hadbeen planned over a 33-mile stretch be-tween Zephyrhills and New Port Richeyalong the State Road 54/56 corridor. Thegeneral news award was based on coverageof a flood insurance town hall meeting heldby U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis last December.

The Laker competed in the top circula-tion category in the state, against similarweeklies with circulation of 15,000 ormore.

“Community newspapers are more im-portant than ever before, because manytimes they are the only place you will findthe stories important to you,” said DianeKortus, publisher of The Laker. “Our re-

porters deliver those stories each week, andwe’re proud to get this recognition at astatewide level.”

Judges called Hinman’s coverage of theelevated toll road a “well-researched series ofarticles” that “looked at pitfalls of similar proj-ects, and presented the pros and cons of theroad.”

In reporting about a town hall meetinghosted by Bilirakis about rising flood insur-ance rates, judges said Hinman had a “niceuse of observation to capture the mood atthe meeting, ‘Groans, interruptions, occasion-al applause.” Judges also noted Hinman’s“concise explanation of the impact of theReform Act.”

The Florida Press Association is astatewide organization that promotes week-ly and daily newspapers. Its annual BetterWeekly Newspaper Contest recognizesstrong reporting, photography, online workand graphical artwork among all its membernewspapers in Florida.

Since 2011, The Laker/Lutz News haswon 20 awards from the Florida PressAssociation, reflecting its continued dedica-tion to community news.

PUBLISHER’S COLUMN

By Diane KortusPublisher

In the past fewmonths I have usedmy column to boastabout our recent in-dustry audit, whichreports that our news-papers have morereaders than ever be-fore.

Today I want to tellyou why that is. But first, a brief recap.

According to this statistically valid re-search, The Laker/Lutz News is read by 79percent of households in Lutz, Land O’Lakes, Wesley Chapel and Zephyrhills — ormore than 64,000 people every week.

This is a readership increase of 10 per-centage points in the past five years — anachievement we are quite proud of, espe-cially when considering most newspapersare reporting fewer readers, reducing fre-quency, shrinking in size, or beingdiscontinued altogether.

So, what are we doing different here atThe Laker/Lutz News to buck those down-ward trends?

It comes down to three things.1. In our audit, we added questions that

asked readers what types of news and sto-ries they wanted to read in theircommunity paper.

2. We accepted the survey results as factand began focusing more on topics readersranked as most important.

3. We hired additional professional jour-nalists who are experienced reporters, excellent writers and passionate about com-munity journalism.

It’s this third element I want to writeabout today.

After I became publisher in 2009, it took

me a while to learn the importance of hir-ing the best reporters that I could find. Ilearned nothing is more important than ex-perience and credibility when it comes togiving readers well-written, relevant storiesthat will engage them and keep them read-ing the paper.

Good writing and fair reporting buildsreadership and loyalty because readersknow they can trust what they read in ourpapers because our stories are accurate, bal-anced and relevant to their interests.

Our journalists were accomplished writ-ers and editors long before they joined TheLaker/Lutz News. They know how to identi-fy stories about interesting people andgroups, how to pick through public meet-ing agendas to find stories buried betweengovernment hype, and perhaps most impor-tantly, they know how to write well.

Frankly, it is a bit unusual for a newspa-per our size to have such accomplishedjournalists. So let me tell you a little aboutour team, beginning with Michael Hinman.

Michael joined us last year as news edi-tor. He has helped us add more serious hardand breaking news to our mix, and hasbrought daily news postings to our website.

His background includes five years writ-ing for community sections of The TampaTribune, including editor of the TempleTerrace News before it was shuttered. Morerecently, Michael was a real estate reporterat the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

He first started covering Pasco County in1997 when he was hired as a reporter forthe Zephyrhills News, and later became itseditor.

The quality of his work received recog-nition over the weekend in Coral Gables, where Michael picked up two prestigiousstatewide journalism awards from theFlorida Press Association.

He received first place in best local gov-ernment coverage for his outstandingcoverage of the proposed elevated toll roadalong the State Road 54/56 corridor. He alsotook top honors in general news about atown hall last year hosted by U.S. Rep GusBilirakis, bringing to light major problemswith flood insurance in our county.

Next is Community Editor B.C. Manion, whose byline has graced our pages for fouryears. She is our most experienced journal-ist, coming to us after 23 years with TheTampa Tribune, where she covered every-thing from city government to schools toregional planning.

But her love is writing about interestingpeople, organizations and places, and that’smostly what she does for us. B.C. has been

the leader of our editorial team as we’veworked hard to improve the quality anddepth of our stories.

B.C has received 11 awards from FloridaPress Association while on our staff, and isone of the most respected journalists inTampa Bay.

Michael Murillo joined us as a freelancewriter last summer. We liked his work somuch that he became an employee in thefall, writing most of our sports stories andalso feature stories about people and thingsto do.

Michael also wrote editorials for theTribune and spent many years as a reporterfor local community newspapers. His wackysense of humor makes him fun to workwith, and his love for community journalismis contagious.

Mary Rathman is the reason our pagesrarely have a grammatical mistake or typo. She scours our sentences, looking for anymisplaced comma or misspelled word. Shehas a sign on her desk that says, “I am silentlycorrecting your grammar,” and indeed, she is.

Besides proofing our work, Mary com-piles three columns that provide usefulinformation for our readers: What’sHappening, Health Notes and Chalk Talk.Mary is a respected and well-liked employ-ee, who started working here more than 10years ago. She also has served the companyin other roles before using her talents to as-sist our editorial team.

While our editorial team is dedicated todelivering a newspaper and website thatour readers can turn to for pertinent infor-mation and lively stories, we know thatmuch of our best work begins with ideaswe get from readers like you.

If you have an idea you’d like to share, please call (813) 909-2800, or email us [email protected]

the signing bonus he received from theHouston Colt 45s to buy his family’s homeon land now occupied by the hospital.

Miller said her dad taught her to thinkfor herself. She remembers being frustratedby him when she would want to commiser-ate over a problem or disappointment, andhe wouldn’t let her or offer her advice.

Instead, he listened and then asked herquestions.

She now understands that he wantedher to arrive at her own solutions.

“He had a way of offering perspectiveby forcing introspection, not (offering) hisopinion,” Miller said.

Porter’s cousin, Mike Gramling, andPorter’s friends Will Roberts, Doug Mansonand Tom Touchton, also spoke at the memo-rial. When the Porters arrived in WesleyChapel, there was no electricity and thefamily lived in a moonshiner’s cabin,Gramling said. Porter’s mother, Martha, pre-pared meals on a Coleman stove.

Porter learned to drive a tractor when hewas 6, and he didn’t have a store-boughtshirt until he went to college, Gramling said.

Roberts said they used to joke thatPorter was “sweater-rich.”

“He had more sweaters than Bill Cosby,”Roberts said.

He recalled a time when Porter tookhim, his brother and J.D. to a basketballgame at the University of South Florida SunDome. Porter was wearing a beret, asweater, brown leather pants and blackItalian zippered ankle boots.

“Nowadays, the sight of man dressed likethat with three young boys might be causefor an Amber Alert. But that was Don in all ofhis glory,” Roberts said, drawing a roar oflaughter from the nearly 240 at the memorial.

Manson was in his late 20s when he metPorter.

It was obvious, he said, that Porter’s lifewas centered on his family. The two mennever had a conversation that didn’t beginwith an update on their families.

When Manson had a problem he didn’tknow how to solve, he turned to Porter, who would listen for as long as it took, whether that was a few minutes or hours.

“He showed me what friendship is,”Manson said.

Porter was a multi-dimensional man, withmany interests, said Touchton, who knewPorter for about 60 years. One of his favoritepoets was Lawrence Ferlinghetti, of the beatpoet generation.

Porter especially liked Ferlinghetti’s “I amWaiting,” which repeated this phrase, “I amperpetually awaiting the rebirth of wonder.”

“I suggest Don has to wait no longer,”Touchton said, “because in leaving us, he hasfinally found his rebirth of wonder.”

This is the moonshiner’s cabin that Don Porter’s family lived in when they moved to WesleyChapel. The house had no electricity, and Porter’s mother, Martha, prepared meals on aColeman stove.

PORTER, from page 1

that they are sometimes led in by theirarms. They’re 50 years old and they haven’thad an eye exam in their whole lives. Someof these people literally cannot see theirhand in front of their face.”

The Lutz optician does the lab work, fabricating glasses from the ordersMontgomery delivers.

“Out of all of the optical shops in the(Tampa) Bay area, this is the only one that’shelped us consistently,” Montgomery said.“We had one in Pinellas County that maybemade 20 glasses and they said, ‘That’s it.’ Acouple of other ones might make 10 or 12and that’s it.”

But Chaney will stay after hours to workon the ministry’s glasses, Montgomeryadded. Chaney’s experience and technicalskills enable him to resolve difficult cases.

The ministry uses frames that are donat-ed by various distributors, Montgomerysaid, noting, “we’ll get frames with pricetags on them anywhere from $200 to$500.”

The ministry sells its eyeglasses in Haitifor $30 a pair, but will provide eyeglasses

for free when someone simply has nomeans of paying, Montgomery said.

“We’re trying to give them somethingthat’s functional and practical at a reason-able price,” Chaney said.

The need for vision assistance is enor-mous, Montgomery said.

“We’re seeing people who have ex-tremely strong prescriptions. We’re gettinga lot of people in that are 20/200,” he said, compared to normal vision, which is20/20.

“We have people in Haiti that have notseen the night stars for years. With theirglasses, they can see the beauty,”Montgomery said. “We’re a mile away froma mountain down there. We’ve got peoplewho haven’t seen the mountain for years.”

Montgomery plans to travel to themountains of Haiti, at 5,300 feet, specifical-ly searching for people who have maturecataracts.

“We know they’re there. They’re proba-bly stuck in their homes,” he said. “Theycan’t get out. Cataract surgery is a 20-minute surgery and it gives them new life.”

He believes Living in Faith is a ministrythat offers people a chance to see God’slove in action.

“In the book of John, it talks about theblind man,” Montgomery said. “He’s beenblind since birth. The Pharisees were ask-ing, ‘Whose sin was it, the man or theparents?’

“Jesus said, ‘Neither, but his conditionwas such that when he was healed, thepeople would see the hand of God atwork,” Montgomery said.

VISION, from page 1 Help Living in FaithThere are different ways to help Living inFaith with its vision ministry.

The Optical Shop and Showroom, 2444State Road 54 in Lutz, is collecting usedDVDs and videotapes to sell in its shop. Allproceeds will benefit Living in Faith.

The ministry also welcomes the help ofophthalmologists who wish to volunteertheir services. Monetary donations arehelpful, too.

For more information about how to help, call the Rev. Russ Montgomery at (813)343-0417.

B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOLutz optician Charley Chaney has fabricatedthousands of pairs of eyeglasses for poorpeople living in Haiti and Cuba. He volun-teers his skills to a ministry called Living inFaith, based in North Tampa.

Those closest to Don Porter said his life wascentered on his family. Porter is shown herewith his wife, Lajuana and children, J.D. andQuinn.

When it comes to helping the homeless, she’s not too proud to begBy B.C. [email protected]

In her previous role, Carol Scheckler de-livered warm greetings to people when theydropped in at the Greater ZephyrhillsChamber of Commerce.

But she stepped away from her job as ad-ministrative assistant at the chamber in May,and has since become president of TheSamaritan Project, based in Zephyrhills.

The chamber job, she said, was her pay-check. The Samaritan job doesn’t payScheckler a dime.

“Now, I don’t have a paycheck, just a pas-sion and a mission,” Scheckler told membersof the East Pasco Networking Group at itsJuly 8 breakfast meeting.

In fact, there are no paid positions in TheSamaritan Project organization, she said.

“None of us get anything other than thereward of knowing we are helping somepeople,” said Scheckler, who became ac-quainted with the charitable organizationwhen she was working for the chamber.

She learned about it through Tim Mitchell, who was president of the Zephyrhills cham-ber at the time, and president of TheSamaritan Project as well.

“I met a lot of unique people, cominginto the office, applying for assistance,”Scheckler said.

She felt compelled to get involved.“My dad is a minister. I was raised that we

were to help those less fortunate,” Schecklersaid. “Not to turn our backs on them, not tostereotype them, but to help them.”

The Zephyrhills woman understands howit feels to struggle.

“When my husband and I moved up in1982, we did it for a reason. We were losingeverything,” she said.

Her husband, a semitrailer driver hadbeen through two major gas wars.

“This was our fresh start,” Scheckler said.“That’s why this project is so important to

me. I have been there. I know firsthand whatit is to lose everything.”

The Samaritan Project has been helpingpeople since 2008. It operates on donationsand fundraisers.

“We assist people with past due rent andutilities,” Scheckler said.

The organization keeps its operationalcosts low.

“We do not pay rent. We have one over-head (cost), that is our Internet, because asyou know in this day of technology, every-thing relies on the Internet.”

The project has spent more than twoyears in the St. Joseph’s Catholic ChurchEducation Building in Zephyrhills in 500square feet of space, including the bathroomand air-conditioning room.

“My private office is the bathroom,” shesaid, noting whenever she has to make a pri-vate call to a landlord or utility company orsomewhere else, she steps into the bathroomto do it.

But the organization is moving to muchlarger quarters at 5722 Eighth St., inZephyrhills. Last week, the Samaritan Projectsigned a two-year lease, rent-free lease for the1,400-square-foot home, thanks to the gen-erosity of a local couple.

In addition to its own fundraising efforts, the organization received a $76,000Emergency Solutions Grant earlier this yearfrom the Florida Department of Children andFamilies and the U.S. Department of Housingand Urban Development.

“With this grant, we are able to get theminto housing,” Scheckler said. “We can paytheir first month’s rent, we can pay their elec-tric deposit, water deposit, the security

deposit.”There is a drawback, though. The organi-

zation must raise matching funds for thegrant money it spends, Scheckler said. Thegrant also requires applicants to fill out aform that’s about 20 pages long.

“We don’t make the rules. We strictlyabide by the rules,” she said.

Still, the project is thrilled to be able tohelp more people, Scheckler said. The grant isaimed at preventing homelessness and get-ting people without housing back intohomes.

Sixty percent of the grant is earmarkedfor getting people back into housing, shesaid, and the need is great.

“We had 151 homeless, registered stu-dents, just in Zephyrhills,” Scheckler said. Atany given time, there are 1,500 to 2,000 regis-tered homeless students in Pasco County.

One of the biggest challenges is finding aplace for these people to live thanks to pastevictions and credit issues, she said.“Landlords won’t step up.”

“If you know landlords who own proper-ty, ask them to trust us,” Scheckler said. “Ourorganization is backing these people. We fol-low them for six months. I do a casemanagement every 30 days on everyone that

we assist.”Despite challenges, Scheckler said her vol-

unteer work has moments of sheer joy.“The biggest thing is, when you walk up

to this client and you go, ‘Here’s your lease,’”she said, with her voice breaking and tears inher eyes, “I do get real emotional.”

A couple of weeks ago, the organizationmoved a young woman and her father intoan apartment. The woman has special needsand the pair had been living in a truck.

“Habitat for Humanity stepped up and do-nated the furniture,” Scheckler said. “When Iwalked them in the apartment, I told (them),‘This is yours. This is all yours. The furniture. The TV. Everything.’ How do you put a priceon something like that?”

While many youths are couch-surfing tokeep a roof over their heads, there also areelderly people who are in desperate need,Scheckler added.

“We have an 87-year-old woman whocouldn’t pay her water bill. She was living offof pool water, drinking water out of a pool,”she said. “Did we step up and help her?Absolutely.”

After telling the group about TheSamaritan Project’s mission, Scheckler wentinto her fundraising mode.

“Any of you women in here wear jewel-ry?” she asked, to set up a pitch for afundraiser planned for Aug. 10. She also urgedthem to get involved in the Harvest Festival, another fundraiser on Nov. 1, or to hit thelinks on Feb. 7, at its annual golf benefit.

Scheckler frequently speaks at churchesand civic organizations to drum up supportfor the cause.

“What we really, really, really need is sup-port of the community,” she said. “Our mottois ‘Working together to make a better com-munity.’ That’s what we want to do.”

And Scheckler said she’ll do whatever shecan to make that happen.

“I am not too proud to beg,” she said. “Ican cry. I can do whatever it takes.”

The Little Women aren’t so little anymorewhen it comes to statewide awards.

The GFWC Little Women of Lutz, a clubfor girls ages 12 through 18 sponsored bythe GWFC Lutz-Land O’ Lakes Woman’sClub, earned multiple awards at theirJuniorette Annual State Meeting in Lakeland.

The event, held June 12-14, is an annualgathering of Florida’s General Federation ofWomen’s Clubs Junior Clubs.

The Lutz group earned four first-placeawards and five second-place awards for itswork in the community, taking home Clubof the Year honors. In addition, the LittleWomen won for the second consecutiveyear the Marcia Bright Award, given to theclub that interacts most with its GFWCWoman’s Club sponsor.

Club advisor Janet Hardy said her first in-teractions with the Little Women of Lutzrevealed how organized they were.

“I went to one of their board meetings, and was just shocked at how many eventsthey had scheduled,” she said. “It was reallyamazing. It really impressed me, honestly.”

While the club collected many awards inthe span of a couple of days, they representa year’s worth of work in the community, both with their sponsors and on their own.In addition to helping clean up Lutz LakeFern Road three times a year, the LittleWomen collect books to be placed at laun-dromats, play bingo at the Baldomero LopezState Veterans Nursing Home, and hostfundraisers for breast cancer awareness.

They also pack boxes to send to over-seas troops, collect cans for MetropolitanMinistries, and work with both the RonaldMcDonald House and the Special Olympics.

Bethany Hanson is president of the LittleWomen of Lutz. The 15-year-old believes thatthe hard work of the members pays offboth for the club and the area in which theylive.

“I think it’s important to be active in thecommunity because it helps so much,”

Hanson said. “Even if you do a little bit ofwork, it makes a big impact. Whenever wevolunteer, we get a sense of accomplish-ment, like we did something great. I alwayscome back smiling because I know I helpedsomeone, and that’s a feeling you can’tbeat.”

The Little Women aren’t the only onessmiling. The GFWC Lutz-Land O’ LakesWoman’s Club remains proud of their juniorclub’s accomplishments, and feels very closeto its members.

“It’s almost like they’re family members,”said Pat Serio, a woman’s club member andan early advisor to the Little Women morethan a decade ago. “We see them as daugh-ters and granddaughters.”

In addition to helping their mentors on avariety of projects, the Little Women arelearning valuable skills they can use later inlife, Serio said. They get experience in publicspeaking and organizational leadership, han-dle funds through their treasury, and gainconfidence from taking a hands-on ap-proach to their work at a young age.

She also credits Hardy with encouragingthem to implement new ideas and get theword out regarding their activities, makingthe group stronger and more effective.

“She’s doing a fabulous job,” Serio said ofHardy.

While the Little Women of Lutz boast just17 members — with nearly half of them setto leave because of age limits — the groupbeat larger chapters, including some withmultiple sponsoring clubs to support them.Hanson attributes their success to workingas a group and finding ways to accomplishtheir tasks on their own, allowing them togrow and succeed together.

“I think our chapter is different becauseeven though we’re small, we do a lot,” shesaid. “Unlike many of the large chapters, themembers do the work themselves and theadvisors don’t. The secret to being success-ful is jut working together, as a team.”

For more information about the LittleWomen of Lutz, call Hardy at (813) 758-0979.

After years of hard work and lobbying, the Pasco County Commission has takenthe final step to expand and improve theLand O’ Lakes Community Center.

In a unanimous vote last week, commis-sioners agreed to find an additional$500,000 for the project after bids came inhigher than expected. The $2.4 million up-grades include expanding the existingbuilding on the site to include the con-struction of a restroom, concession areaand meeting room, as well as a picnic shel-ter, a small outdoor amphitheater, twosoftball fields, a hybrid football and soccerfield, a basketball court, a mile-long trailand parking for 250 vehicles.

“Our park has waited a long time forthis facelift,” said Sandy Graves, one of thecommunity leaders who have championedimprovements at the park, located at 5401Land O’ Lakes Blvd. “Thanks for makingthat dream become a reality today.”

Last year, commissioners put aside $1.9 million to make the improvements, and put the project out to bid in February. When the bids came back, however,Construction Technology Group Inc. ofPlant City had the lowest bid at $2.24 mil-lion. Trias Construction LLC of Lutz wasnot far behind with a bid of $2.27 million, while the highest bid came from ClevelandConstruction Inc., of Naples at $2.6 mil-lion.

Impact fees collected from parks in thecentral part of the county were funding

the improvements, and commissionerswere told no more funds were available tomeet the $519,000 shortfall.

Assistant county administrator HeatherGrimes recommended through her depart-ment that commissioners borrow from thecapital improvement fund reserves, andthen pay it back with park impact feesover the next two years.

Graves, however, had a different idea. The county is sitting on $3.7 million of

impact fees dedicated to a proposed proj-ect for Raymond James Financial. Sincethat project has yet to move forward, someof those dollars could be directed to theLand O’ Lakes project, Graves said.

Commissioners, however, disagreed.“I would hate to see us start changing

an agreement that we have with RaymondJames,” Commissioner Ted Schrader said.

The St. Petersburg financial companyannounced in 2011 that it planned to buildtwo 100,000-square-foot buildings onWiregrass Ranch property, bringing 750jobs to the county by 2024. Although someof those jobs were expected to come asearly as this year, no work has begun at thesite yet.

In the end, commissioners stuck withtheir original plan to borrow from re-serves, giving the thumbs up to let thework finally begin.

Commissioner Pat Mulieri is grateful forthe final vote, as she said it will free upsome of her phone time now.

“That Land O’ Lakes group is tenacious,”the retiring commissioner said. “And Sandy, you don’t have to call me anymore.”

COURTESY OF SANDY GRAVESThis stage could someday be a part of the Land O’ Lakes Community Center, which is thecenter of a $2.4 million expansion finalized by the Pasco County Commission.

Connecting Overpass Road to I-75 now up to countyBy Michael [email protected]

Seven months might seem like a longtime to await a decision. But when it comesto building major roads, time isn’t always onyour side.

Florida Department of TransportationDistrict 7 secretary Paul Steinman an-nounced to Pasco County commissioners lastweek that the Federal HighwayAdministration has approved a new inter-change that will connect Interstate 75 withOverpass Road.

The project will add yet another entryinto the county in an area where WesleyChapel District Park already exists and a newhigh school is planned, and could even allevi-ate current and future congestion on StateRoad 52 to the north, and State Road 54 tothe south.

“The exciting part of that is that it doesopen up the east side of the county for youonce it gets developed,” Steinman said at themeeting.

The Overpass Road interchange will pro-vide additional access in the Wesley Chapelarea as well as East Pasco County, where sev-eral developments have been approved, or

are in various stages of planningor construction, such asPasadena Hills.

That is a 22,000-acre projectthat will create more than adozen high-density villages thatcould help the area managegrowth for that region over thenext few decades.

To build the interchange, that portion of Overpass Roadnear I-75 will be expanded tofour lanes with the possibility ofexpanding into six in the future.Eventually, the plans are to ex-tend Overpass to connect OldPasco Road and U.S. 301 inZephyrhills.

The cost for the project will be more than$55 million, and while federal money willeventually be available to the county, officialshave to show initially they’re able to fund theoverall work on their own. Funds couldcome from an expanded gas tax, Penny forPasco funds, and even mobility fees.

“Whether the state or federal governmentwill put in any money, you can’t depend onthat,” county transportation planning manag-er James Edwards told The Laker last January.

But the clock is ticking, county planningand development director Richard Gehringtold commissioners.

“Whenever you get this finally inked andapproved, you have eight years to construct,”he said. If the county fails to do that, federalapproval of the project is withdrawn, andboth the county and the state would have toapply all over again.

Population studies have shown the num-ber of people who live in the area Overpasswould serve will explode 400 percent to

218,000 people by 2035. Right now, justfewer than 60,000 people live in the area.

Capacity on I-75 also will increasethrough that area from the current 51,000vehicles daily between State Roads 52 and54, to 165,800 in 2040. That kind of volumewould create traffic nightmares for existinginterchanges in San Antonio to the north andWesley Chapel to the south. It could evenback up State Road 56 just north of theHillsborough County line.

The county may have been waiting formonths to hear back from Washington, D.C.,but plans to improve Overpass Road havebeen afoot for more than a decade.

In 2003, county officials first looked athow the road could be improved betweenOld Pasco and Fort King roads, without look-ing at any potential connection with I-75.That changed with a new study in 2006 thatgained favorable reviews from FDOT and fed-eral highway officials.

Because the interstate is a federal road, any connections to it would have to be ap-proved by the federal government. To showthe viability of such a plan, the county pro-duced a project development andenvironment study and a preliminary inter-change justification report, officials said.

FILE PHOTOOverpass Road will finally get its connection withInterstate 75, the first step toward what could be PascoCounty’s new hot spot with sports fields, schools and amassive community that could help fuel growth over thenext 50 years.

Seniors might live a less-active lifestylethan they did when they were younger, butWalt Bockmiller thinks they still have timefor softball, golf, tennis, bowling and maybevolleyball.

If not all of those activities, maybe one ortwo of them.

Bockmiller, a Land O’ Lakesresident, started Senior Sports in 2011, andhe organizes regular events for older resi-dents that include a wide variety ofactivities. Whatever people choose to do,there are plenty of benefits in getting outand being active, he said.

“It’s an opportunity for them to get outand start doing something rather than justbeing home shopping or watching TV,”Bockmiller said. ”It gives them an opportuni-ty to meet people in a different kind ofenvironment.”

Bockmiller began Senior Sports by set-ting up softball leagues, since many peoplehave some experience with baseball or soft-ball in their youth. That starting pointproved extremely popular, and he now hasaround 90 participants for those games.Counting tennis, bowling and golf, SeniorSports boasts more than 150 participants, and he said that tennis could prove to bethe most popular of them all.

While softball is designed for men andwomen ages 60 and older, the other sportsdon’t have an age limit. He said playerscould be in their 40s through their 80s. Theoldest softball player turned 90-years-old lastmonth.

At 71 years old himself, Bockmiller mightbe expected to ease up on his schedule, butit’s simply not in his nature. He worked inrecreation and leisure services management, and over his 47-year career, Bockmiller or-ganized several activities, both with andwithout sports themes.

While he expected the participants toenjoy Senior Sports, he didn’t expect themto have quite as much fun as they’re having. He said people are “finding their smile,” andarea residents who normally didn’t get outmuch are making friends and planning get-togethers off the field or court. Participantsoften go out to dinner, plan outings to seethe Tampa Bay Rays, and even go on cruisestogether, Bockmiller said.

Senior Sports is about sports, naturally, but without a focus on the competitive side.Instead, Bockmiller keeps the focus on hav-ing fun, giving out awards that are earned bygood sportsmanship instead of athleticskill. Softball might appeal to more physical-ly fit participants, while bowling is availablefor those who might not have that level ofability. Or, people can simply sign up to playwhatever appeals to them.

The activities are designed to be inex-pensive and occur during various dates andtimes, allowing more seniors to participate. But whether a person plays every availableactivity or selects their favorite, or simplywants to meet new people, Bockmiller saidthey’ll come away with some fun memoriesand good people to share them.

“There are a lot of friends that come outof this stuff. Some of my friends in tennisand golf, especially tennis, are friends forlife,” he said. ”There’s a commonality thatyou have, and because of that you have alot of laughs over the years. It’s just a lot offun.”

Co-ed slow-pitch softball is played fromSeptember through December, and againfrom mid-January through mid-April. Golf isplayed on a variety of courses year-round onWednesdays. Bowling is played year-roundin Lutz on Thursdays. Tennis and volleyballare new to the schedule.
