Memorial Day Service A rainy Memorial Sunday morning on May 26 forcedworshippers to continue the memorial service in the sanctuaryinstead of Chapel Hill cemetery. The nurturing committeehonored our veterans with a very appropriate service. Dee Burt read "No Freedom Isn't Free" and a poem titled"Their Sacrifices" was read by Siera Richter. The group sangBattle Hymn of the Republic. The reading of the deceasedveterans buried in Chapel Hill Cemetery was read by VaugnKloster supported by an honor guard of veterans present, whilefamily members were asked to rise to be recognized. Youthvolunteers distributed the flowers to those present. A thirdreading about the origin of Taps was shared by Cheri Richter.Marvalyn Kelly and Cindy Krull then played Taps. UMWChapel UMW sponsored a day trip to Grinnell on June 6, 2013. Karen Handorf andKaren Collins coordinated the day for Marcia Wiese, Connie Appelgate, Shirley Svendsen,Marvalyn Kelly, Myrene Appelgate, Edie Hodges, Sue Koster, Lois Groth, Patti Cornwell,JoSvendsen, Connie Buchman and Kathryn Burt. Lynda and Journey Miell, who live inGrinnell, joined the women, too. We stopped at a local caf for drinks and pastriesbefore touring the original Merchants National Bank, which had been designed by LouisSullivan in the early 1900s. It is now Grinnells Chamber of Commerce. We ate lunchat the Prairie Canary, and then we looked at the unique and impressive wall mosaics at theUnited Methodist Church. We then shopped in the downtown shops before headinghome. It was a fun way to spend a cool summer day. UMW will meet Thursday July 11, 2013, 1:30 pm at the church.Secretary pro-tem,Sue Koster

Chapel ladies enjoyed a day trip to Grinnell on June 6.

LCA! The Ladies Cemetery Aid met 12:30 pm Wednesday June 12, 2013 at the TremontGrille for lunch. President Kathryn Burt called the meeting to order. Vivian LeVier leddevotions with a poem What makes a Dad? Eight members answered roll call by naminga famous person they would like to have as a dinner quest. The minutes of the Maymeeting were read and approved. There was no correspondence. The treasurers report

was presented and placed on file. Vivian LeVier made and Connie Appelgate secondedthe motion we pay Ann Proffitt $100 for name boards for the avenue of the flags. Motioncarried.

! In old business, Shirley Svendsen reported we had 35 veterans flags flown and 43total flown on Memorial Day weekend. We have two new flags. We will need to reviewthe flag situation with respect to what can be repaired and which ones will need to bedestroyed.! Regarding new business, discussion was held on how to store our flagpoles andthe veterans name boards. Other cemeteries in the area use hayracks or a running gearto transport and store their flag poles. It was determined we would spread the word onour needs. Carolyn Kloster will put an item in the church newsletter to that effect.! Committee Reports: There were two cards sent. Funomics was $.50 if you donot have your ground chicken ready for the ice cream social and $.25 if you have it done.! Kathryn closed the meeting with readings from Lifes Little Instruction Book.Respectfully submitted,Carolyn Kloster, Secretary

South Dakota Trooper Earns National Honor for Bravery on Dutyby South Dakota Highway Patrol (Notes) on Tuesday, June 11, 2013 at 9:32am

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. Trooper Andrew Steen of the South Dakota Highway Patrol has been named the AmericanAssociation of State Troopers 2013 Trooper of the Year following an incident with a suspected drunk driver in which hereceived critical injuries.

Steen, 34, is assigned to the Sioux Falls District of the Highway Patrol.

The incident for which he received the honor started when Steen attempted to stop a vehicle for erratic driving inSioux Falls in the early morning hours of Oct. 17, 2012. The driver fled in her vehicle. Other Highway Patrol troopersand Lincoln County Sheriffs deputies joined to assist in the pursuit.

The driver entered a parking lot, where she rammed into Steens vehicle before driving into a storefront. Steenwas then on foot and attempted to immobilize her vehicle while commanding her to stop. When he realized the driverwas headed straight for him, he fired his duty weapon. She drove into Steen, forcing him onto the hood of her vehicle, and then he fell to the ground.

Realizing that lives were in danger and an officer was down, deputies also fired upon the driver. She fled thescene and was apprehended nearby. She received two gunshot wounds but survived.

Steen suffered a fractured skull, a life-threatening traumatic brain injury, and a severely broken ankle. He doesnot remember much of what happened that day. Doctors said his life was in jeopardy, and he was told recovery could takeseveral years.

Following a medically induced coma, surgery on his ankle, and surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, Steenwas released from the hospital on Dec. 14, 2012, just eight weeks and two days after the incident. He left the hospital oncrutches, wearing his full South Dakota Highway Patrol uniform and had a police escort to his home.

Steen and the deputies were found to be justified in firing their weapons and using lethal force.Steen was nominated for the AAST award by Col. Craig Price, Superintendent of the South Dakota Highway Patrol, forextreme courage in a life-threatening situation and for his resiliency and dedication during his hospital stay. Steen alsoshowed great compassion by donating several thousand dollars to another police family in need from the donations hehad received. He was among 25 troopers from 18 states nominated for the AAST award.

AAST representatives will present Steen with a crystal trophy and a Smith & Wesson M&P 9 mm handgun at ajoint event of the SDHP and the Minnesota State Patrol on June 13 in Sioux Falls. The event will take place at 11:45 a.m.CDT at the Port of Entry on the South Dakota side of the South Dakota-Minnesota border on Interstate 90. The media isinvited to attend.

The AAST Trooper of the Year award is presented annually to a state trooper who exemplified traits of an

outstanding law enforcement officer in the previous year.Andrew is the son of Dan and Tricia Steen, Gladbrook, and is married to Kristen Steen.
