JCF-ISRAEL GVANIM SOCIAL ACTION NETWORK

Building aPLURALISTIC, JEWISH AND DEMOCRATIC ISRAEL

In Hebrew, Gvanim means hues of color. The JCF founded Gvanim to promote Jewish pluralism in 2000 in response to the deep division in Israel symbolized by the assassination of Prime Minister Yizhak Rabin by a Jewish religious extremist.

THE NEEDIn Israel, schools and communities are divided into religious and secular sectors, creating social divisions and religious tensions that can present obstacles to democracy. The framework is often seen as a struggle between the ultra-orthodox and ultra-secular, but this polarization is only a partial view of the complex socioeconomic trends within Israeli society. Our work in Israel aims to promote the full expression of Jewish identity in all its variegated forms.

THE PROGRAM

THE OUTCOMESIgniting innovation in Jewish Pluralism: In the last decade, Gvanim has blossomed into a network of programs stemming from fellows’ social action projects that stimulate a new shared discourse – the very bulwarks of democracy.

150 ALUMNIMembers initiated 80 Social Action projects.

350 SECONDARY PARTICIPANTSGvanim spin-off programs have been implemented in the IDF, in local government, in the Knesset, and local businesses.

THOUSANDS OF ISRAELIS ARE TOUCHED BY THE PROGRAMSBy developing leaders that promote acceptance for different forms of religious expression, the ripple effect has been members of newly created congregations have participated in conferences, and celebrated high holidays together.

Gvanim redefines pluralism for modern Israel through a 1-year action-oriented fellowship program (similar to the Wexner Heritage Program) that:> Engages key Israeli leaders from across the religious and social spectrum in a deep examination of personal Jewish identity-related challenges, together> Empowers Gvanim participants to initiate, plan and implement social action programs to promote Jewish pluralism in Israeli society> Provides thought leadership and funding for the fellows’ social action projects

All core program fellows visit San Francisco and NY for hands-on experience in Jewish pluralism and then participate in an alumni network for further their learning and collaboration.

THE POWER OF PJ LIBRARY

Research has shown that experiences in the first five years establish the basis of a child's Jewish sense of self. PJ Library’s vision is to inspire family engagement in Jewish life, stronger Jewish identity and deeper connection to the Jewish community through simple bedtime stories. Through PJ Library®, parents can create a shared family experience to learn about and appreciate their heritage.

In addition the Federation was just selected as one of only six PJ Library® communities to participate in PJ Promise, a campaign to permanently endow PJ Library® in our community, with the Harold Grinspoon Foundation providing cash incentives.

The total budget to continue to grow this valuable identity building experience is $406,206.

PJ Library is an award winning national program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, currently serving over 185 U.S. communities. In 2008, with generous local funding from the Jim Joseph Foundation, the Federation launched PJ Library in the San Francisco community.

PJ Library serves as teaching tools that nourish the roots of Judaism through a shared family experience.

JCF applies a continuum of meaningful ways to channel young adults on a pathway from initial engagement into deeper philanthropic and leadership involvement. By providing different strategies for participation on all levels, we create a comprehensive system to serve our wide ranging population.

Our programs inspire hundreds of dynamic individuals to become committed to building a stronger Jewish community in the Bay Area, Israel and throughout the world. Through experiences including: Taglit-Birthright, Young Adult Division (YAD), Young Funders Impact Grants Initiatives and Young Funders Network.

THE NEEDFor many, the period of young adulthood lasts between 10-15 years beginning with college graduation and ending with other seminal life moments such as starting a family. It’s a time of continued personal exploration and identity building. To this end Federation provides a wide variety of educational, leadership, volunteer, and social activities that allow for meaningful involvement while benefitting the local and global Jewish community.

The itemized cost of our office of young adult engagement and philantrophy includes:

• Birthright Experience: $500 birthright participant follow up at home with 3,000 Bay Area alumni

• YAD: $35,000 provides about 25 events per year to engage participants on many levels with leadership opportunities, philanthropic education, volunteer experiences and networking

• National leadership experiences and the National JFNA Mission to Israel: JCF provides $25,000 in subsidies for young adults

The total budget to continue to grow these vital engagement programs is $585,643.

Join us in ensuring the engagement and development of the current and future leaders of our Jewish community.
