His energy, personality and flair would have certainly been a challenging combination in a classroom as his teachers worked to try and harness, direct and mould his exuberance. Schools offer many things for many different types of people and although it was not for example the Maths or the Science that he learned whilst at school that led to his overwhelming success in life, the complex and complicated environment of a school did allow him access to learn valuable lessons that contributed to his success. Schools provide students with a miniature version of society, full of different personalities and social constructs that give students an opportunity to make sense of the world and their place in it with the fall-back safety of teachers who will help guide them and provide support. It was within this context that Robin Williams would have begun learning about people and what made them happy and how he could receive positive feedback from them in response to his behaviour; what worked and didn’t work in terms of eliciting the response he was after. I imagine that school for him provided the opportunity to ‘study people’ as an added extra to being able to study the more traditional subject areas like learning to read, write and be numerate that are all important for everyday life. The opportunity and importance of schools providing this context for learning is formalised at Blackburn Lake Primary through the daily interactions between students, our staff and families as we continue to “learn together” to create the next generation of solid citizens for our community both locally and globally. JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

The passing of entertainer Robin Williams last week has caused many people to pause and reflect on the challenges of mental illness and addiction. The opportunity and importance of schools providing this context for learning is formalised at Blackburn Lake Primary through the daily interactions between students, our staff and families as we continue to “learn together” to create the next generation of solid citizens for our community – both locally and globally. GRADE 4 CAMP – MOUNT MORTON

Camps, excursions and incursions are very important as they provide experiences for the children that would not normally be possible in a school environment. They also help connect their learning to the ‘real world’ and give a context and focus that makes their learning more effective. The children of Grade 4 enjoyed many outdoor adventure activities. Visiting Mount Morton I saw the main benefits of attending school camp being the development of independence and self-confidence as the children had opportunities to broaden relationships beyond their immediate friendship group.

I sincerely appreciate the work and time of staff who attended and made these experiences possible for the children. Thanks to Shari Lo Presti (Coordinator), Allison Duffy, Ewan McAllister, Natasha Rodrigues, Phil Lumsden (teachers); Anita Andic, Duncan Wise, Nicole Pietersen, Ros Lean (ES staff) and Josh Cram (student teacher). Earlier this week I joined 1L for their Reading Hour and the WALT on the classroom task board (pictured) tuned everybody in to the focus of “use interesting voices”. This was particularly relevant to the rotational task I was assigned, with the children reading a script in readiness to perform a play about the big book ‘Suzee Sing Special Spy’. Along with another shared big book ‘My Wonderful Aunt, Suzee Sing’ provided the context for the morning’s activities, with class teacher Lesley Munro expertly and explicitly focusing the whole class onto grammatical features of the big book, which the students were able to explore individually or cooperatively via the carefully planned rotational activities, including Guided Reading with the teacher. The Literacy Block concluded with daily ‘Word Study’. Word Study is different to traditional Spelling in that it provides students with opportunities to investigate and understand the patterns in words as well as explore the word definitions. Knowledge of these patterns means that students needn't learn to spell one word at a time. Whilst we still teach spelling rules such as “i before e except after c,” an engaging rule that 1L explored this week on the interactive whiteboard was “silent e is a ninja”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWDOg0Y9f2E (a long e sound)! Each week when I have the pleasure of visiting your children in their classrooms I am reminded of the school’s TRRAC values – thinking, respect, responsibility, attitude and care. I could not be more pleased with the atmosphere of calm and productive endeavour evident throughout the school. INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM Our Instrumental Music provision is highly valued within our school community and is very much part of the culture of our school. It is a program that is widely acknowledged to be exceptional at the primary level, with

the expertise of our tutors seeing this program now cover over a third of our school’s children (with an

additional group rehearsing Wednesdays before school - the String Ensemble doing their first external performance this Saturday at Huntingtower School, 77 Waimarie Drive, Mt Waverley). I thank Music teacher Sam Collins for her exceptional organisational skills in ensuring this program operates effectively and of course thank the talented tutors: Adam Carson – Brass, Erin Reilly – Violin, Bianca Goldberg – Violin, Joshua Dema – Cello, Jess Farrell – Flute/Piano, Kate Honeybun – Piano, Paul Carter – Saxophone/Piano, Chris Gassin – Guitar, Sanja – Clarinet, Scott Ingram – Drums, and Jason Tucker – Guitar. The growth and demand of our instrumental program has created some logistical problems with our classroom spaces as we aim to meet the community’s needs. Next week (Wednesday @ 7:30pm) the instrumental tutors are performing ‘A Musical Celebration’, with ticket sales funding minor improvements to the instrumental teaching spaces in the school (as a state school we do not receive government funds for extra-curricula activity spaces). I hope you can attend. STUDENT TEACHERS

Teachers fondly remember their years at university and the importance of their teaching rounds in schools and how much they learnt about the craft of teaching and student management during these weeks. Our school supports student-teachers and we welcome from Deakin University Tanya Dennis – completing her Masters and working with Prep L, as well as 3rd year students Claire Mitchell (working in 2S) and Josh Cram (working alongside Philip Lumsden). I hope to see you at tomorrow’s whole school Assembly @ 3pm to again welcome our ‘Launch Pad’ (Prep 2015) parents, acknowledge our ‘Students of the Week’ and hear a report from our Grade 4 campers.

Thursday morning 4 September Come along on the morning of Thursday 4th September to select a special gift for your Dad or Grandpa/Pa/Pop. Items will be priced from $1 to $10. Please bring your shopping bag, so that we can get the treasures home safely. We are doing things a bit differently this time….the stall is migrating to the DJ Centre so that

we have more room for older children to shop with their younger brothers and sisters…so that gift selection can be a team effort, funds can be pooled and Dad avoids getting a duplicate present. We need some parents to help to set the stall up on Wednesday afternoon from 3.30-5.30pm and help run the stall and pack up on Thursday morning from 9-12pm.
