Executive Assistant of Division 4

Hello Division 4! My name is Amanda Madenberg, and I will be your Lieutenant Governor for Division 4N for the 2014-2015 Key Club year. I am from Great Neck South High School.

I am really excited about this opportunity. Key Club runs in my blood: my parents met at a Key Club convention when my dad was the International President of Key Club and my mom was the Lieutenant Governor of this very division! Like my parents, I love community service and I’m looking forward to this year because I will get to meet other people who share this same interest.

I am qualified for this position because I am very organized. I’m able to manage several AP and honors classes, leadership positions in three clubs, a babysitting job, and teaching at Hebrew School. I’ve also had many leadership opportunities in the past such as leading a color war team as a CIT in summer camp and working with children.

As far as Key Club experience, I’ve been involved since the first day of high school. I was elected as one of two sophomore board members for Key Club, and that year I served as the club’s Event Coordinator. During junior year I have led most of the weekly meetings as my club’s Vice President. Additionally, I have served as division 4’s Executive Assistant since November. I was able to work alongside the previous Lieutenant Governor, so I really got to see a lot of the responsibilities first hand. I helped him contact clubs for dues and organized some articles for the newsletter. I know what I have to do to be a great Lieutenant Governor.

One of my major goals for this year is to make sure that every single club in our division is actively participating in community service events. I want to have more clubs represented at divisional meetings and I will look to strengthen my relationships with all club presidents. I am so excited for this year, and I hope you are too! I am very approachable—please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have ideas, suggestions, questions, or concerns. My email is [email protected] and my phone number is 516-606-6499. I can’t wait for an amazing year!

A Message from our International Trustee, Shane Meyers

(From Last Newsletter)

Hello, Division 4 Key Clubbers,

I’m Shane Meyers and I’m ecstatic to serve as your International Trustee this Key Club

year! I can’t wait to work alongside all of you in order to improve your homes, schools,

and communities.

Don’t let my officer title intimidate you. I’m just like any other high school student

in Key Club: I love naps, binge watching Netflix, and serving my community. I currently

attend Dreyfoos School of the Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida where I major in

communications.

The job of an International Trustee is ultimately to link the districts to Key Club

International, but during my term, I’d like to go one step further and work alongside all

of my assigned districts in order to facilitate as much community service as possible.

When it really comes down to it, our organization revolves around service and if I’m not

encouraging this service in some way, shape, or form, then I don’t deserve the position

of International Trustee. For this reason, I’m completely open to communicating with

anyone in Key Club. If you ever need to talk to someone about anything Key Club,

don’t hesitate to send me an email, a Facebook message, or even a text. By reaching

out to me, you allow me to aid your district to the best of my ability!

Although I’d like to help facilitate as much service as possible, people like Rohit

actually have the most influence over the amount of service that members of Key Club

complete each year. When all the levels of Key Club International work together,

something beautiful happens. When International creates initiatives like the Eliminate

Project, District Governor Jacob guides the district effectively, and your Lieutenant

Governor cares as much as all the New York Lieutenant Governors do, you have the

opportunity to make that ‘something beautiful’

happen. You have the perfect storm for an

effective year of service in your division; you, the

club member, have the power to inspire more

service than ever before. Harness this power and

let it guide you in a year full of service.

Even though I won’t get to meet a lot of you

in person this year, you should know that the

difference you make in your communities inspires

me every day. Thank you for all you do! Here’s to a

productive, service-filled year!

International and District Projects

Each year, the New York district board endorses a set amount of charities and

organizations that they believe are important and represent our values. All district

projects make up the fundraising component of our district’s set of projects for

the service year.

The Eliminate Project: Kiwanis and Key

Club have partnered up with UNICEF to

ELIMINATE maternal and neonatal

tetanus. This disease takes up the lives

of nearly 60,000 babies and mothers

EVERY YEAR. By 2015, Kiwanis and Key

Club hopes to raise $110 Million for the

ELMINATE Project. All for one and one

for all, we can fight this disease and wipe it away from this earth!

Make-A-Wish Foundation: This

foundation gives those children,

who are diagnosed with life-

threatening illnesses, a wish come

true. This organization helps in

changing the lives of children all

over the globe.

Kamp Kiwanis: Kamp Kiwanis is aimed at

providing fun, physical exercise and

adventure. It strives to afford opportunities

to participate in a creative outdoor group

experience in a democratic setting and

develop characteristics of leadership and

fair play.

7

Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center: The Kiwanis

Pediatric Trauma Center is intended to help treat

youngsters. It is a Kiwanis-Hospital affiliation that was

made to give the funds and staff important to make

an injury focus with broad medicinal aid and

security. Kiwanis serves to give treatment and helps

to meet the needs of families with children suffering

from injury and/or trauma.

Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation:

Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria usually transmitted by

the deer tick. It is a scary possibility to consider for New York

State residents who enjoy spending time outside during the

summer months. Lyme Disease may affect the brain in many

ways. The most common is a disturbance in thinking. Other

symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood

swings, irritability, depression and marked fatigue. This

foundation helps to pay for medical treatment for children

with this disease.

St. Jude Children’s Hospital: The mission of St. Jude

Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures,

and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic

diseases through research and treatment.

Consistent with the vision of our founder Danny

Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on

race, religion or a family's ability to pay. St. Jude is

unlike any other pediatric treatment and research

facility. Discoveries made here have completely changed how the world treats

children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases. With research and patient

care under one roof, St. Jude is where some of today's most gifted researchers

are able to do science more quickly.

Salvation Army

Beginning at the end of November, the Key Club would

make a weekly appearance at Stop & Shop in Glen

Cove to raise money for the Salvation Army. The

Salvation Army is an association that was created to

help raise money to provide the less fortunate people

something to cheer about during the holidays. Every

Saturday and Sunday until Christmas Eve, Key Club

students braved the cold and stood outside of the food

market ringing bells, singing songs and giving out candy canes while trying to raise money for

this wonderful organization. Members tended to work at the store in between two shifts: 9:30

AM-12:30 PM and 12:30-3:30 PM. This was a very fun event for all of the members as they

could stand outside with their friends and bring joy to people while making money for the

poor to have a great holiday season. In all, our club was able to raise a total amount of

$3,613! This is the highest total that our club has ever raised for the Salvation Army! This is a

huge accomplishment and our members should be very proud of this achievement and

continue to strive to gain more money each year. As a result, this year was a historic year for

our club as we were able to raise the most money for this association in an easy and fun way!

Cohen’s Children Hospital Visit

The holiday season brought great cheer

to many throughout the community

here at North Shore. Many gathered

with their families to celebrate the

holiday season. The North Shore Key

Club decided to spread the holiday joy

by going to the Cohen's Children's

Hospital in New Hyde Park to deliver

presents to the children. Key Club

teamed up with the North Shore

Chamber Orchestra to deliver presents,

holiday cheer, and elegant music to the

children of this hospital. The Chamber

Orchestra played many holiday favorites, such as "Jingle Bells," "Sleigh Ride," and even some

Hanukkah songs including "Dreidel." Prior to the delivery, the Key Club wrapped the presents

that the children received as well. The children have been through a lot of adversity and

sufferage, and this visit definitely relieved the stress that they have experienced, and brought

joy to their holidays.

Cohen’s Children Hospital Visit

On Thursday December 11th 2014, the

North Shore High School Key Club

visited St. Christopher Ottilie for the

annual holiday party. The key clubbers

who participated were all given festive

hats, which really added more

Christmas spirit to the event. Each

member was paired with a child who

requires special needs, and helped

them with holiday themed arts and

crafts. The children we worked with

approximately ranged from ages six to

eighteen. Along to some festive

Christmas tunes, the children

decorated stockings, as well as foam

Christmas trees, snowmen, and snowflakes. Later on, Kiwanian Gary Craner arrived dressed as

Santa. He was accompanied by executive board member Fallon Blacharski, who was

dressed up as an elf. Mr. Craner then handed out gifts for all of the children. The entire room

was lit up with Christmas spirit throughout the entire event! We already look forward to this

wonderful event for this years Christmas.

Carle Place High School Vincent Basso, Carle Place KC Secretary

On February 27, 2015 Carle Place High School

students grades 9-12 attended the 8th annual Battle

of the Classes, Battling for a Cause co-run by the

Carle Place Key Club. $25,558 dollars was raised for the "SuperTy Foundation" which aims to

fund research for cancer treatments specific towards pediatrics. Cindy Louis Campbell is the

founder of the organization and created it in memory of her son Tyler Louis Campbell. Ty had

a love for life that defined him. The organization aims to find pediatric cancer treatments that

work without robbing children of their childhood. The Ty Louis Campbell Foundation

encourages kids to have fun and enjoy the simple things in life. The life of "SuperTy" was

honored and celebrated at Carle Place High School. High school students competed in tug

o'war, relay races, basketball, ultimate frisbee, a skit competition and in the area of

fundraising. In the end the Senior Class took home the win in fundraising and for the

event. The Carle Place Key Club thanks and congratulates Key Club member, Augie

Cavallaro who fundraised $5,000 for SuperTy. Augie has been the top fundraiser for Battle of

the Classes, Battling for a Cause for the past 4 years and has fundraised over $18,000 in total.

MORE SCHOOLS SHOULD WRITE A SERVICE SPOTLIGHT AS IT IS A

GREAT WAY FOR RECOGNITION AND TO LEARN ABOUT WHAT

OTHER KEY CLUBS HAVE BEEN DOING!!!

To those who do not know what a service spotlight is, it is just a

brief article about an event or project written by any member of

the club.

Major Emphasis Program

What is the Pediatric Lyme Dis-

ease Foundation?

The Lyme Disease Project was set up to

help pay for medical treatment for chil-

dren with this disease. Unfortunately most

insurance companies do not pay for its

treatment, which is very expensive.

What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme Disease is caused by bacteria usually

transmitted by the deer tick. It is a scary

possibility to consider for New York State

residents who enjoy spending time outside

during the summer months. Lyme Disease

may affect the brain in many ways. The

most common is a disturbance in thinking.

Other symptoms that occur frequently include headache, mood swings, irrita-

bility, depression and marked fatigue. The spirochete which causes Lyme Dis-

ease can invade the central nervous system within days to a week of initial

skin infection. the majority of people who are treated early with antibiotics do

well and incur no long-term problems. People who are not treated until later

may have a more complicated outcome.

How can you help?

Well, there are many things you can do such as host fundraisers such as a

bake sale, hot chocolate sale, or even a movie night!
