Bryson Nimmer named SCJGA Player of the Year

Bryson Nimmer was named the S.C. Junior Golf Association’s 2014 Jay Haas Player of the Year. This award goes to the golfer who ends the year at the top of the Heritage Classic Foun-dation’s rankings. These rankings are based on overall finishes

in tournaments held across South Carolina and nationwide, with points compiled from more than 200 events conducted over the past 12 months. Among the highlights this season for Bryson, was his win at an Open AJGA championship held at Chechessee Creek in mid-June, several additional Junior Golf Tour Victories and his consistent play in all of the SCJGA major cham-pionships that he entered. He also qualified this year for the USGA Junior Amateur and made it to match play, which solidified his standings. He was honored at a press conference at the Thornblade Club in Greer, SC with his parents Tony and Patsy Nimmer, Jay Haas and SCJGA Staff in attendance.

Stephanie Meadows Earns Status on LGPAStephanie Meadows has earned conditional status on the LPGA for the 2015 season. Stephanie whose home course is Berkeley Hall, was a former Inter-national Junior Golf Academy student and outstand-ing student athlete from the University of Alabama.

She finished third in her professional debut at the 2014 Women’s Open in June, earning $271,373, and also finished in the top 20 at the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic in September. At the LPGA Q-School held in December, she was one of 154 players completing to finish among the top 20 to earn full status for 2015. After five qualifying, Meadows was in a tie for 18th with six other players and went into a playoff the next day for the remaining 3 spots. As luck would have it, Karlin Beck chipped in from 75 ft. on the 18th hole for a birdie to earn the final exemption. As a result, Stepha-nie will begin the 2015 LPGA season with conditional status which still assures her of entry into the majority of LPGA events. Watch for Stephanie on tour as she will be displaying a Berkeley Hall logo’d golf bag at all of the events she plays on the LPGA TOUR.

2014 People’s Choice Award WinnerThe writers of Hilton Head Monthly Magazine started a tradition every December to recognize local businesses and communities with their Readers’ Choice Awards, which is the “Best of the Best” places to shop, dine and live in the Hilton Head-Bluffton area. Over 5,600 electronic ballots were received from their subscribers.

For the 2nd year in a row, the 2014 Readers’ Choice Award for Favorite Private Golf Club in Bluffton was presented to BERKELEY HALL! Congratulations to all of our Members!

Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation Funds 14 Projects to Help Bluffton’s

Most Needy CitizensThe Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation’s Grants Committee has recently exceeded $150,000 in charitable donations in support of fourteen local “Not-for-Profit” organizations that address basic human needs of the Bluffton Commu-nity. Since 2008, this Charitable Foundation had donated nearly $350,000 to local charities, and with these new grants in 2014, the total grants that have been awarded to local charities now exceed $500,000. This is much needed support to help vulnerable and low income families, children, adults, veterans and the elderly to lead more successful, comfortable and productive lives.

The organizations that received a 2014 grant from the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation are Backpack Buddies of Bluffton, Bluffton Self Help, Bluffton-Jasper County Volun-teers in Medicine (VIM), Boys and Girls Club of Bluffton, Child Abuse Prevention Association (CAPA), Deep Well, Heroes on Horseback, Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, The Literacy Center, Lowcountry Legal Volunteers, Meals on Wheels, Memory Matters, Navy Marine Corp Relief Society and Neighborhood Outreach Connection.

Our Berkeley Hall community is honored to help these worthy organizations make important strides in improving the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors. Thank you Berkeley Hall members for your continued compassion, concern, and generosity!

Special RecognitionRear Admiral (Ret.)Phil Anselmo and his wife Diane received a special award from Adrian Morris, General Manager/COO in recog-nition for their leader-ship and direction since 2008 in creating the Berkeley Hall Charitable Foundation.

Women’s US Soccer Legends Visit Berkeley Hall Club

Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly and Tisha Venturini-Hoch and their staff were staying at the Berkeley Hall Golf Cottages while in town for their three-day Team First Soccer Academy December 12-14 at the University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB), Gateway Campus. Hilary George, daugh-ter of Berkeley Hall member Diana Haran, is the Assistant Head Women’s Soccer coach at USCB. Hilary was instrumental in bringing the soccer camp to the area.

Hamm, Lilly and Venturini-Hoch appeared in a combined five World Cups, and Hamm was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame in 2007 while Lilly was inducted this year. Their Team First Soccer Academy seeks to provide young girls and women a first class opportunity to develop as an individual play-er within the context of playing a sport that requires a disciplined unit to perform unselfishly. It is their goal to encourage players to respect the integrity of the game while we continue to nurture their love for soccer.

Before the camp started on Friday, the ladies took time to hit the North Golf Course with Jack & Diana Haran and Randy Wright. Despite a frost delay, the group was able finish 18 holes.

Monday, January 5 at 3pm, Ladies’ Locker RoomThe Secret Keeper by Kate Morton

From the New York Times, The Secret Keepera spellbinding novel filled with mystery, thievery, murder, and enduring love.

During a summer party at the family farm in the English countryside, sixteen-year-old Laurel Nicolson has escaped to her childhood

tree house and is happily dreaming of the future. She spies a stranger coming up the long road to the farm and watches as her mother speaks to him. Before the afternoon is over, Laurel will witness a shocking crime. A crime that challenges every-thing she knows about her family and especially her mother, Dorothy—her vivacious, loving, nearly perfect mother.

Dorothy’s story takes the reader from pre–WWII England through the blitz, to the ’60s and beyond. It is the secret history of three strangers from vastly different worlds— Dorothy, Vivien, and Jimmy—who meet by chance in wartime London and whose lives are forever entwined. The Secret Keeper explores longings and dreams and the unexpected consequences they sometimes bring. It is an un-forgettable story of lovers and friends, deception and passion that is told—in Morton’s signature style—against a backdrop of events that changed the world. Reviewed by Amazon.com.

How to adopt the Mediterranean Plan into your daily lifestyle? The Mediterranean diet incorporates the basics of healthy eat-ing - plus a splash of flavorful olive oil and perhaps even a glass of red wine - among other components characterizing the tra-ditional cooking style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Most healthy diets include fruits, vegetables, fish and whole grains, and limit unhealthy fats. While these parts of a healthy diet remain tried-and-true, subtle variations or differences in proportions of certain foods may make a difference in your risk of heart disease.

The Fitness Corner by Derek Lemire, MS Exercise Physiology, NSCA-CPT and TPICGFI

There are several new programs being introduced in the Spa & Fitness Center for 2015. You may have heard about our first Living Lean Program that was first introduced in November. The program was a great success for everyone involved. All of the participants not only dropped some body weight but also began living a lean and healthy lifestyle. We will be starting a new 6-week session on Monday, January 19 and are anxious to welcome new members to the program, who will also get started LIVING LEAN! Please contact one of our Fitness Trainers in the Center for more information.

In January, we will be in the clubhouse once a month hosting a complimentary informational session entitled: Functionally Fit Fridays, where we will be discussing subjects that focus on making you “functionally fit” – meaning. how you can improve your flexibility and strength and perhaps hit the ball longer, straighter, and without any pain.

And finally, for those who want to return to the Glory Days of spirited competi-tion and camaraderie with friends, watch for our announcements of upcoming events such as basketball games, tennis matches, swimming, softball, kayaking, bowling, and other such events that will soon have you reliving those glory days and creating new memories.

5K Turkey Trot The Spa & Fitness Center held the 7th Annual Berkeley Hall 5K Turkey Trot on Friday morning after Thanksgiving and we had another great turnout of nearly 100 excited rac-ers! We also had our traditional bike race and a much shorter, but exciting race for children under 12 years old. This is the first year the Turkey Trot was able to provide chip timing for all the competitors through the company named Play Hard Event Timing, which made for a better race experience for everyone!

Thank you to all the participants and congratulations to all our winners! We had a blast and look forward to next year’s 5K Turkey Trot!

There are subtle changes that mark the seasonal changes along the Okatie River in the winter. Since there are few decidu-ous trees to signal the transition from fall to winter and winter to spring in our maritime forests, we must look at the changing hues of the grasses that punctuate the coastal landscape. The perennial cordgrass for example, turns from bright green to muted shades of gray and brown and though it is rather drab in appearance, the deteriorating cordgrass is vital source of food and cover for the wildlife. Cooler temperatures and shorter days dramatically inhibit the growth of plank-

ton and with fewer particles suspended in the water there is a relative clearness in the water compared to the nutrient laden cloudiness that is seen in summer.

Clearer water provides an opportunity to visually explore the river bed, especially in the shallows and at the edge – where the grass and water meet. You’ll observe pinfish flounder, redfish, oysters, small rays and blue crab. You’ll hear the sound of the dry and brittle grasses rustling in the breeze, see the behaviors of migrating birds, watch an eagle gracefully fetch a bunch of grass to use for its nest, or a school of fish dart around beneath your boat. Remember to dress properly and have your binoculars ready. There is a lot to see! Guided 2-hour nature kayak tours are scheduled every Monday from 9 to 11am and on Fridays from 4 to 6pm that are led by a trained interpretive naturalist guide. Contact the Concierge at 843.815.8494 for reservations.

The initiative will include consistent communications from the golf professional staff prior to play along with pace of play tips and reminders posted throughout the club, in newsletters and on the website to build a culture of awareness among all players.

TIP #1: “Start Smart” ~ Be early to the practice area to warm up properly for your round and arrive at the first tee of the correct course 5 minutes prior to your start time. Remember to get all your essentials and be prepared to play “ready golf.”

Our goal is to set an expectation and create a pace of play culture that leads to rounds of golf at 4 Hours or LESS at Berkeley Hall.

I am continually growing and improving at my trade. Here are a few notes from what I’ve learned over the last few years:

STRIKE POINTWhere you strike the ball on the face plays a far bigger role in determining the flight of the shot than what was previously believed. As a result, heel and toe misses can lead people down a road of trying to fix something that isn’t broken.

Advice - Use Dr. Scholl’s Odor X foot spray to mark the face and get a better understand-ing of where you are striking the ball on the clubface.

SWING APPEARANCEThe two dimensional appearance of the swing on video is not what determines the flight of the ball (Swing direction vs 3D club path). The look of a golf swing has very little to do with the message the clubhead relays to the golf ball, and you don’t have to roll your hands to hit draws.

Advice - Don’t get too caught up on how your swing looks. It’s all about the physics at impact, so always go for function over form.

ANGLE OF ATTACKThe angle of attack is hugely important in determining the shape, distance and trajectory of any shot. Most golfers hit down too much, while many of the best golfers tend to have a shallower strike on the ball. A positive or upward angle of attack has a huge effect on tee shot distance for slower speed golfers.

Advice - Almost all golfers should be working toward a shallower more “sweep-like” strike on the ball. With the driver, you should learn to hit up as the gains are too great to ignore.

SHOT SHAPEThe clubface is primarily responsible for the launch of any shot. The loft of the face at impact (dynamic loft) will largely determine the launch angle of any shot. On full swings, the launch angle is often lower than you might expect it to be. The club path is primarily responsible for the curvature of any shot.

Advice - To hit draws (and most of us should) we need an in to out club path. To improve the launch, you either need to change the loft of the club or improve the loft delivered at impact.

THE HUMAN ELEMENTIt is all too rare to meet a man who hits the ball as far as he thinks he does, or who swings the driver as fast as he think he does. Mention club speed to any golfer, male or female, and there’s a 95% chance the next swing will be faster. While there are patterns, anything and everything is possible.

Advice - Check your ego at the door. You’ll start shooting better scores when you plan to hit the ball the distance you’re capable of hitting it.

I hope these thoughts and ideas can help you have a better year of golf in 2015!

Golf Course architects make every effort to design and constructbunkers that can be easily maintained by following routine mainte-nance procedures. However, despite their best efforts, most bunkers have been a challenge to maintain in a cost effective manner. Since we are always interested in discovering ways to minimize their main-tenance cost and improve playability, our search for an efficient de-sign prompted us to trial a new bunker that is commonly referred to as, The Better Billy Bunker Method. This is a new design has been installed at several of the highest ranked golf clubs in the country including Bethpage, Merion Golf Club and Winged Foot.

As we reported in the November, 2013 issue of the Experience, the Better Billy Method was installed in the greenside bunkers adjacent to holes #4 and #17 on the South Course. This required us to re-contour the slopes in an around the bunkers, repair and add additional drain-age lines and install new bunker liners. Since that time, these new bunkers have reduced our total labor cost by eliminating the need to replace contaminated sand and restore the face walls that previ-ously had been washed out following periods of heavy rainfall. Their resilience to poor weather conditions has exceeded our expectations.

Although the results with the Better Billy Bunker Method have been excellent, the problem we face is that the installation cannot be per-formed by our own maintenance crews. The reconstruction of our bunkers to the Billy Bunker Method would require the work of out-side contractors. That would result in closing the courses for a period of time while the work is being performed, and also would expose us to the chance that damage may be caused to some of the bunkers.

There is, however, another bunker system known as the Capillary Concrete System that is performing equally as well at the Atlanta Athletic Club, and can be installed by our own maintenance crews. Capillary Concrete has characteristics not found in any other liner product on the market. These specially engineered light-weight aggregates are mixed with a proprietary concrete admixture to replenish mois-ture to drying sand on steep bunker faces. The force of adhesion helps keep the sand in place, which makes the sand easier to maintain and improves playability. Since Capillary Concrete is pervious, water free-ly drains through it to greatly reduce or even eliminate the problem of washouts. We feel that there would be a number of benefits to installing this system including lower installation and maintenance

costs without the need to close the courses while the work is being completed.

As another trial, we recently installed the Capillary System in the greenside bunker adjacent to hole #6 on the South Course. By mid-year, we will have completed our trials and will select one of these two systems to ultimately replace all 27 greenside bunkers on the South Course.

GGOLF & Community MAINTENANCE

In Search of a Better Bunker Designby Danny Malone, Certified Golf Course Superintendent

Cool Season Flower Planting by Kayne Hoecht, Community Maintenance Supervisor

Winter is the time of year for you to review your landscape requirements to ensure a smooth transition into the growing season. Since the number of small projects can quickly get ahead of you, a simple checklist can make a big difference for the entire New Year. For

example, mulch beds and minor root pruning around the base of large trees should be performed now. Also, structural prun-ing of shade trees is important not only for the health of the tree but also to help shape the tree, while pruning branches away from your home prevents insects and other pests from entering as they are looking to escape the colder temperatures.

Rain sensors are an effective device to control your water out-put and prevent plant root problems caused by over saturation of the soil. You should remove any debris from the rain sensors to allow the device to operate properly and while you’re at it, inspect the rest of your irrigation systems and make whatever repairs are necessary. Even while plants are dormant, dry and windy conditions may require watering to prevent plant desic-cation. Soil testing is the most cost effective way to improve the health of your landscape, and the best way to determine the reason for underperforming turf. These tests will determine if a special application of nutrients is required. Finally, homeown-ers who choose to maintain their own landscapes should have their power equipment tuned up to ensure proper operation for the year ahead.

A well maintained landscape is a significant asset to home ownership but if left unchecked, can also be a terrible burden for the homeowner. This is an ideal time to prepare for the myriad of weather conditions that nature may bring our way.
