Dear Greystone Members and Families,

Happy New Year! If you thought 2014 was an exciting time, it will only get better in the coming months. A tremendous amount of volunteer effort by our membership, committees in cooperation with dedicated management and staff has positioned Greystone

for a strong and exciting future in 2015 and beyond.

Before we look forward, I would like to recognize individuals who have contributed to Greystone’s success during 2014. Dr. Jeff Clifton led the initiative to bring the Regions Tradition to Greystone while also working with the committees to create a building plan that met with overwhelming membership approval. Dr. Bhrett McCabe and Mr. Steve Vanderburg created and finalized a long term strategic plan that has GGCC pointed in the right direction for future growth and excellence. Additionally, Mr. Jason Miller led his team in creating a perfect Legacy golf course for members to enjoy during the Founders course renovation. All of this occurred under the direction of Mr. Calvin Bolling who personally supported every group at every meeting through-out the year thus ensuring Greystone continues on the path to a Club of Excellence.

During 2014, the future plan for Greystone Golf & Country Club was articulated via a membership survey and other means and now we are fully engaged in the creation of this dream. As you can see, the Legacy Golf Performance Center and the Founders Golf Operations Building & Plaza are moving forward; construction of the new fitness facility should begin early in the new year, and if that does not get you excited, the renovation of the Founders lower level will begin later in 2015 with plans for a new restaurant, ladies locker rooms and a childcare center. While these activities have been taking place, communication and planning has begun with the Bruno Event Team to prepare for a successful Regions Tradition in 2016.

The committees at Greystone will be key to the success of these initiatives and I want to ask each of you to seriously consider serving on a committee to help us reach our goals in 2015. It is your club….. VOLUNTEER!

Utilization of the club increased in many areas (despite the closure of the Founders course) during 2014 with strong growth in utilization of the club’s dining areas. No doubt a tribute to Executive Chef Daniel Mitchell and Front of House Manager Andrew Nevins.

With all of the exciting news of things to come in 2015, I want to remind each of you that the continued success of our club will require that we grow our membership. With memberships simplified, renovations on the way, and a new championship golf course in place, there has never been a better time to join. I encourage and challenge you to bring new members to Greystone.

In closing, it is my honor to serve as your President in 2015 and I look forward to a

successful year in which we take GGCC to new levels.

2 Greystone Golf & Country Club | January-February 2015 2

Dear Members,

2015... A Time of Change, Transition, Growth!

This year will be filled with amazing and exciting changes including the opening of the Golf Performance Center in January 2015 which will revolutionize Greystone’s approach to golf teaching and instructional programs. In March, Greystone will reopen the Founders Course with all

of the amazing course changes that have been done as well as open the Golf Operations Building & Plaza. This new building at Founders will streamline our golf services department while leaving a new amazing Plaza for a variety of activities.

In January, construction will begin on the Founders Clubhouse lower level. This two phase project will result in a new Fitness Center that can be accessed 24/7, a childcare area, women’s locker room and lounges, a new casual dining room with a gathering bar & kitchen. The entire project should be completed by February 2016.

With all of these exciting changes, we will face some transitional issues, some foreseen and some unforeseen. Greystone will do everything possible to communicate transitional issues that arise. Everyone will have to be patient with these changes as Greystone grows!

These renovations and periods of transition create growth opportunities! There is no better time than now to grow Greystone! How can Greystone help you, your family, your business? Enjoy a round of golf, host a meeting, have a private specialty event, and invite your friends & associates to join your Club. Make 2015 the best year ever at your Club... Greystone!

Wishing each of you continued great health, prosperity, and happiness!

Dear Members,

Welcome to 2015! That has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? I am excited to think about the year ahead especially since in the

spring we will be able to experience our Founders Course healed and ready for play in great condition. Throw in a new Golf Operations Facility & Plaza and our new Golf Performance Center and 2015 is going to be a special year indeed. The Legacy Golf Performance Center should be ready to go sometime in late January to early February while the Golf Operations Facility should be ready when we re-open in March. We will begin phase two of the construction plan (fitness area) in the beginning of January and look forward to the renovation!

PGA Merchandise Show

Each year in January, the center of the golf universe revolves around the PGA Show in Orlando. Some of the golf staff will make the trek to see the latest in golf as well as to attend seminars ranging from Merchandising to Club Fitting and everything in between. The main goal of the trip is to bring back ideas to help set our Club apart from the rest. If you have any special requests or know of anything that you feel we should look into while at the Show, please don’t hesitate to drop me a note.

Golf Outings Looking for a way to help out the Club as well as your favorite charity? As I am sure that you know, we host golf outings throughout the year. Outings serve a huge role in the financial stability of the Club and have grown exponentially over the past few years. Please let us know of any events that you feel would be a good fit for us here at The Stone. If the event includes only 16 players we would still like to host the group. Please contact me via phone (205) 986-5151 or email [email protected] and I will answer your questions regarding Golf Outings at Greystone. Thanks for doing what you do for Greystone; we are better because you’re a member!

See ya on the Tee!

Dear Members,

Happy 2015!

Blackburn Golf is excited to begin the New Year by transitioning into the recently completed Greystone Performance Center (GPC). This state of the art learning

center brings Greystone’s instructional program to the forefront of modern golf coaching.

The GPC will provide a year round solution for improving golf performance. Our facility will feature the latest teaching technologies designed to expedite the student’s learning curve. The three studio style bays will each feature multi camera V1 motion analysis, allowing students to view their swings not only live as they move but also post lesson in high speed slow motion playback via the Blackburn Golf V1 web based academy. We will offer the serious golfer a complete “mayo clinic” style comprehensive game evaluation. Golfers can elect for physical screening, power testing, functional movement correction, golf specific conditioning, neuro mechanics training, video analysis, Trackman combine, ground reaction force analysis via force plates, 3D motion capture, Focus Band training, Sam Puttlab analysis or Aimpoint green reading.

Members will also be able to join the GPC Practice Lab where hours will be available for working with the new technologies on your own game away from the weather indoors. More details about availability and structure of the Lab will be coming soon.

The GPC will also be the home base for all of our monthly coaching programs beginning January 2015. We will be offering both monthly and drop in rates for our coaching sessions. The Junior programs will offer free clinics for new students wishing to experience the programs, while full enrolled juniors will enjoy more on course playing opportunities in 2015. Our mission is to grow the junior development program to provide a fun and effective learning environment for the local youth to build a love for the game.

Lastly, I would like to congratulate Donnie Brewer who was crowned the Men’s Biggest Loser for 2014 dropping his handicap 40% in one year. Congratulations to Donnie and coaches Mason Dennis and Brian Speakman!

I look forward to seeing you guys in the GPC soon.

Dear Members,

Winter Golf? How do you adapt? For those of us who play through the winter months, the game just isn’t the same as in the summer. The fairways have gone dormant and tend to retain

water, the greens seem to become more firm, and the golf ball simply doesn’t go as far. If we want to continue having fun while playing, we need to either lower our expectations, or adapt to the conditions. Believe it or not, there are some things we can do with our equipment that may help us from December to March.

Golf Ball Our partners at Adidas Golf completed some fascinating research last year on temperature and its effects on how we play. Can you believe that Jason Day’s clubhead speed dropped 13MPH from 116 to 103 with an equivalent of one hours exposure to 40 degree weather? Have you ever noticed that the ball doesn’t go as high, doesn’t fly as far, or stop as fast in the winter? We believe that to be the denser air or colder temps, but reality is, we simply don’t swing as fast, which means less distance and spin. Consider playing a softer ball if you can’t keep the ball airborne. If the ball is staying airborne but isn’t carrying as far, perhaps try a harder ball that will allow the face to come of the face of the club faster. Food for thought as well… you can always move up a set of tees.

Wedges Most players have difficulty in the winter with wedge play. The issue is the playing surface. This time of year, the grass goes dormant, meaning the roots no longer need to draw as much moisture from the ground. The result is softer turf conditions. This means that any swing made where the club strikes the ground first will usually result in a “fat” shot with mud flying in your face. Try using a set of wedges or irons that have a more cambered or blunted leading edge, or more “bounce,” as that may help reduce the amount the club digs into the ground.

Driver Some players, especially low ball strikers, may find they hit their 3 wood off the tee further than their driver this time of year. Most players don’t really know how far they carry a 3 wood versus a driver. Some low ball hitters may actually carry a 3 wood farther than a driver, which means in soft conditions where the ball doesn’t roll anyways, the 3 wood will go farther because the driver can’t run out. Swallow your pride and your ego if this is the case and use the 3 wood.

The bottom line is, there are all sorts of little tricks that may help you play better in any condition. So remember, the equipment can help you adjust to your surroundings and enjoy the game more. If you have any questions on how to “winterize” your set, or would like help planning for an upcoming golf trip where the climate is quite different than here, feel free to call or email us—(205) 986-5129, [email protected].

Go Ahead, Snooze! Sleep makes you feel better, but its importance goes way beyond just boosting your mood or banishing under-eye circles. Adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more. "Sleep used to be kind of ignored, like parking our car in a garage and picking it up in the morning," says David Rapoport, MD, director of the NYU Sleep Disorders Program. Not anymore.

Fun Facts about Adequate Sleep

Improved Memory: During sleep you can strengthen memories or "practice" skills learned while you were awake (it’s a process called consolidation).

Live Longer: "Many things that we take for granted are affected by sleep," says Raymonde Jean, MD, director of sleep medicine and associate director of critical care at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City. "If you sleep better, you can certainly live better. It’s pretty clear."

Curb Inflammation: Inflammation is linked to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and premature aging. Research indicates that people who get less sleep—six or fewer hours a night—have higher blood levels of inflammatory proteins than those who get more.

Spur Creativity: Researchers at Harvard University and Boston College found that people seem to strengthen the emotional components of a memory during sleep, which may help spur the creative process.

Healthy Weight: Researchers at the University of Chicago found that dieters who were well rested lost more fat—56% of their weight loss—than those who were sleep deprived, who lost more muscle mass. Dieters in the study also felt hungrier when they got less sleep.

Lower Stress: Sleep can reduce levels of stress, and with that people can have better control of their blood pressure. It’s also believed that sleep affects cholesterol levels, which plays a significant role in heart disease.

of my regular routine and get more accomplished in the weight room than ever before. In the past year working with Todd,

I have gained strength and put on 15 pounds of muscle! I wouldn’t be in the best shape of my life now if it wasn’t for the professional training I receive in the Fitness Center.”

-Drew DuBose, 18 years old, Lacrosse Player
