trend this year. If you are interested in hosting a monthly meeting at your club, please contact Sam Leatherberry, his information is on the Membership tab on the website. Sam has done a great job with finding speakers, and with finding meeting sites since his arrival back to Northeast Ohio. There are dates still available for the 2016 season.

As most of you know, my father, Bob Figurella, was a long-time Golf Course Superintendent and a member of this chapter his whole life. Well, my Dad liked to keep all sorts of old literature, like equipment brochures, and superintendent magazines. I recently inherited all of the Northern Ohio Newsletters from 1960 up to 1990.you know, back when they were printed on paper and snail mailed. That being said, I would like to announce a new section that I will add to our newsletter this year.

Hopefully everyone had a great holiday season! It seems as though I just joined the Northern Ohio Board of Directors just yesterday, but it has been over three years now. As I take the position of president for 2015, I would like to thank Scott Brickley for all of his efforts in 2014. . I think it was one of the best years I can remember, filled with fun and educational meetings. I hope to continue that

  • 4It is going to be called Back in the Day. I will summarize some of the articles, or re-print them as they first appeared. Believe me, there are some great old photos, stories, and tips in them! Some are so good that I will have to delete the names to protect the innocent. Plan on reading Back in the Day in next months newsletter.

I would like to give a warm welcome to our newest Board members: Brad Vecchio, Jim Robinson, and Brian Bates. Thanks to Eric Snodgrass, Sean McHugh, and Dave Kilpeck, who have left the Board. This promises to be a great year, with many exciting meetings coming up,

including the January 21st educational meeting at Silver Lake C. C., and the always fun Reverse Raffle on March 7th at Raintree Country Club. We even have a meeting coming up for assistants and superintendents that will teach etiquette, taught by a professional etiquette instructor. Stay tuned for more details.

    Sincerely,

    Mark FigurellaNOGCSA [email protected]

  • 8START THE YEAR OFF RIGHT BY DEVELOPING A WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN

By John Daniels, agronomist, Central RegionJanuary 6, 2015

Water conservation plays an integral role in the sustainability of golf facilities. The economic and environmental benefits of efficient water use are nothing new. However, every day it seems like golf courses are being asked to do more with less. Greater awareness of golf course water use, stringent water use regulations, recent droughts and greater demand on a limited water supply are making it difficult for many courses to secure the water they have been accustomed to in the past. Even courses fortunate to have sufficient water need to take steps to irrigate judiciously.

If you havent already done so, I urge you to make a New Years resolution to develop and initiate a water management plan in 2015. A water management plan will allow you to assess current water use practices at your course and help pinpoint areas of improvement. The ultimate goal is to reduce water loss and increase water reuse, thereby reducing overall water consumption.

Begin with a thorough site assessment that provides information on all areas of maintained turf and water bodies throughout the property. Take into account current and future water needs. Then, best management practices (BMPs) can be incorporated to help meet water-conservation goals. Since droughts are inevitable in much of the country, a drought-contingency plan should be included as part of the water management plan. Specific, quantifiable targets for required water-use reductions during drought should be outlined. For example, ask how you could reduce water use by 10, 20 or even 30 percent if mandated. Consider how the irrigation system and course setup would be altered to accommodate a water reduction.

It is important to remember that a water management plan is a living document and should be reevaluated and revised every few years. Use the plan to help guide turf-management decisions and identify what areas of the irrigation system should be updated. Water management plans can also be used as a communication tool to the membership, local water authority and other regulatory agencies to demonstrate your golf courses commitment to water conservation. Lead by example and have a document that clearly defines your commitment to responsible water use. It will help ensure the needs of your facility receive full consideration.

For more information on how to develop a Water Management Plan and BMPs relating to water, please visit the Golfs Use Of Water Resource Center.

Developing a water management plan will show your golf facilities commitment to water conservation and may help avoid overly harsh water restrictions in the unfortunate event of prolonged drought.

  • 9As we start a new year there is a lot going on with GCSAA. Probably the most pressing issue is the member standards survey. You should have received an email from President Keith Ihms, CGCS, that included a link to the survey. It is very important that you fill this out and let GCSAA know your thoughts on any potential changes to your membership. Right now, the board of directors is looking for feedback from the members so they know how to proceed. Once the surveys are tabulated and the comments read, the board will make a decision as to the proposal to bring forward at the chapter delegates meeting in the fall. The changes could then be voted on at the 2016 annual meeting.

On the government relations front, Chava McKeel and her team continue to work for you to make sure your voice is heard in Washington D.C. In the Great Lakes region, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is in full swing with numerous projects going on around the Great Lakes. If you would like to see what is going on around you, google Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and click on the link to the home page. There you will find an interactive map with all of the projects that are taking place.

The pollinator issue is also looming large, especially on the

east and west coasts. It seems to be gaining some traction and we as an industry need to make sure the facts are correct. Please let GCSAA know if you hear of any government relations issues that come up on a local level; the earlier the experts can get involved, the easier it is to make sure the right people get the information they need to make the proper decisions.

I wanted to let everyone know that I have resigned my position at GCSAA to become the agronomist for the LPGA Tour. I have enjoyed my time with GCSAA very much. GCSAA is a great organization that is doing a lot of positive things for the game of golf, and in particular for the golf course superintendent. Encourage everyone you know to become a member, it is very rewarding, especially if you put a little time into it. I would like to thank all of the chapter leaders that I have had the opportunity to work with and all the members for making the field staff position so rewarding. I would also like to thank GCSAA staff and the Board of Directors for giving me the opportunity to work for such a great organization. I look forward to seeing everyone in my travels!
