AVENTURA CONSTRUCTION BOOM Foreign buyers with cash drive new luxury developmentsBy Lisa Overing - Aventura Digest

As Loehmann’s Plaza gets a complete facelift into Aventura Town Center, local private devel-opment in Aventura is booming with at least five, new high-end waterfront condos in preconstruction that are scheduled for completion between 2013 and 2015, with six new developments planned for Sunny Isles, Hallandale and Hollywood Beach.

Prices for real estate in Miami Beach, Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton are on the rise. Several 2012 studies indi-cate condo prices have increased 25% from October 2011 to October 2012. A tremendous amount of activity, nearly one of every three closings, is driven by international buyers, primarily from South America.

While market prices are still 40% lower than six years ago, prices are going up and should continue to rise in 2013.

“Now is the time to buy,” says Mindy Bloom, a realtor with Beachfront Realty. “No one’s giving property away and the market is picking up. There are a lot of foreign buyers who can close quickly with cash who are not affected by stricter bank financing regulations.”

Bloom says the average two bedroom condo in Aventura costs $500,000 - $600,000 but that prices for most of the new high-end condos being built in Aventura are over $600,000.

New glamorous condo developments in Aventura include Echo, Marina Palms, Bellini Williams Island, and Village at Island Estates. Preconstruction condos for Sunny Isles include Porche Design Tower, CHATEAU Beach Residences, Mansions at Acqualina and Regalia. Costa Hollywood and Beachwalk in Hallandale complete the remaining waterfront condos in pre-construction.

The 2013 Aventura real estate boom includes new amenities in several con-dos like robotic, valet parking, Apple-Smart Phone technology to con-trol air and water tempera-tures, and dog walkers with many units serviced by private elevator.

“There is great interest in living in Aventura,” says Mayor Susan Gottlieb. “People are looking for commercial and residen-tial properties here and that stimulates business growth.”

As the last residential site on Williams Island,

Bellini’s prices start just under $1 million and are quoted up to $3.7 million. The project is planned with 70 apartments from 2,300 to 4,980 square feet spanning 70 floors.

With 148 residences in two, eight-story Mediterranean styled buildings, The Village at Island Estates is located on a private island sur-rounded by Aventura Bay and the Intracoastal. A pri-vate bridge connects The Village (located on the North Island) with the neighboring South Island’s exclusive, single-family homes and marina, as well as to the Williams Island residential community on the mainland.

Echo plans 190 units with two, three and four bedroom luxury water-front residences located adjacent to the Aventura Community Center and Performing Arts Center. Prices start around $600,000.

Marina Palms on Biscayne Blvd. next to Houston’s Restaurant has a new developer, Plaza Group and DevStar Group. 468 residences in two tow-ers will overlook a 110-slip marina with 40-90 foot slips available for yacht owners. Prices run from $600,000 to $1.5 million, excluding penthouses.

CITY NEWSDealing with conflict in your child’s classroom

(BPT) - While adults live with the reality that some people just don’t get along, children can find such concepts more difficult to grasp. Teaching our children to deal with conflict and helping them

navigate the complexities of interpersonal relationships can be difficult - especially when it comes to conflict with a teacher. Knowing how to approach the teacher and the situation can make all the difference in resolving problems that might arise in the classroom.

“When parents are active in their child’s education, the child is likely to perform better academically in school,” says Dr. Deborah Hammond-Watts, an adjunct professor in the College of Education at Argosy University, Chicago. “A good working relationship between school and home sends the message to a child that his/her parents and the school work together for his/her educational and emotional benefit.”

When a child approaches a parent with an issue or comment related to school and/or the teacher, parents should be willing to listen and to not jump to conclusions. “Whether you believe what your child is telling you or not, it is important for your child to be and feel heard and to know that you are willing to listen,” says Dr. Dominick Ferello, professor in the College of Undergraduate Studies at Argosy University, Tampa.

The next step is for the parent to reach out to the teacher directly. Request a conference or time to discuss the matter with your child’s teacher directly (and without your child present) to gain some understanding as to what the teacher perceives the concern or issue to be. “When requesting to talk with a teacher, keep in mind that the teacher’s job is to teach the children in the classroom during the school day. Schedule an appointment to make certain that the teacher has an amount of time to speak with you. Showing up at school and

demanding to see a teacher may not always work in your favor,” says Hammond-Watts.

“Try not to make assumptions about what is going on before you have an

opportunity to meet with the teacher,” says Ferello. “The goal for the meeting is to gather information about what may be going on and make it clear that you want to partner with the teacher in helping your child to feel that the focus is on their education and helping them succeed in the classroom,” says Ferello. “Even in some of the most difficult situations, a compromise can probably be reached if both the teacher and parent keep in mind that

they are working for the benefit of the child in the educational setting,” says Hammond-Watts.

The reality is that teachers aren’t perfect and neither are parents, says Ferello. As such, the outcome may not always be what either party had hoped for. “Teachers are faced with questions and concerns from a number of parents and children on any given day,” says Ferello. “Given the number of students they teach and the demands placed on them, it’s not hard to imagine that even teachers can get frustrated. Given that parents naturally want to stand up for their children and see the best in and for them, it stands to reason that parent/teacher conversations can sometimes go in the wrong direction.”

“If that happens, it’s important to acknowledge that you got off on the wrong foot,” says Hammond-Watts. “To change the relationship or the conversation, someone needs to address the ‘bad start’ and be willing to start over. Either the parent or teacher can do this.”

If you and the teacher just cannot get along after much effort and frustration, the principal or another administrator may need to get involved. “The presence of a third party may assist both teacher and parent to try to communicate in a way that demonstrates less conflict,” says Hammond-Watts. “After the meeting the principal/administrator can meet separately with the parent and teacher to critique the meeting and try to offer solutions toward a better working relationship. While the principal can instruct the teacher to work with the parent in a professional manner, the teacher needs to be sincere in any efforts to do so.”

$499world of Thoroughbred horses. Instead of riding, how-ever, he works as a racing official at Gulfstream Park. His vision is very important to him, so when he noticed that his ability to see clearly was deteriorating, he went to see Dr. Stanley Braverman at the Braverman Eye Center.

At the time, Donald wore glasses, and he thought he needed a new prescription. “But that wasn’t the case,” says the Kentucky native who now lives full time in South Florida. “When Dr. Braverman tested my eyes, my pre-scription hadn’t changed. He told me I had cataracts.”

To eliminate the cataracts that were causing the trou-ble, Donald underwent a simple surgical procedure, and today, his vision is excellent. “It took about 10 minutes, and there was no pain whatsoever,” he says. “Dr. Braverman has done surgery on a couple of my jockey friends, too. He is very thorough”. The other jockeys were also both very famous. One won the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby riding CarryBack in 1961 and the other won over 6000 races making him the winningest jockey in the history of horse racing. Because of their jockey excellence, they have all been inducted into the Horse Racing Hall of Fame. Another thing that they all have in common, is they all have had cataract surgery by Dr. Stanley Braverman.

Since he had the procedure, Donald has been able to put away his glasses unless he is reading fine print. “My vision is very good now,” he says. “I drive without glasses, I watch TV without glasses, I do most everything without glasses. I like not having to wear them.”

He’s very pleased with the results. “I had a good expe-rience,” he says. “‘I’m glad I went to see Dr. Braverman.”WHAT ARE CATARACTS

A cataract is formed when the natural lens of the eye, responsible for focusing light and producing sharp images, becomes cloudy and hardens, resulting in a loss of visual function. The lens of the eye is clear at birth but is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of aging. A cataract is painless and usually develops gradu-ally over several months or years. The onset of a cataract in one or both eyes may cause decreased night vision, impaired depth perception, and increased color distor-tion.

Cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss among adults age 55 and older. In fact, poor vision from cata-racts affects 60 percent of all adults over age 60. However, cataracts also can result from injury, heredity, or medications, so they can affect people of all ages.

Understanding that no two conditions or patients are the same, Dr. Braverman analyzes the patient’s symp-toms, performs a comprehensive eye exam, and may test for glare disability and contrast sensitivity before making a diagnosis. The final decision to proceed with the sur-gery belongs to the patient.

Your optometrist or Dr. Braverman may prescribe glasses, medication or surgery depending on your symp-toms, complaints and age. Usually surgery will not be recommended until glasses no longer work to make you visually happy. In the case of lensectomy surgery, the patient cosmetically wants to get rid of their glasses.CATARACT SURGERY: What to expect

Cataract surgery is the removal of your cloudy natural lens, which is usually dissolved using high frequency ultrasound through a small (less than 3 millimeter) open-ing. An artificial lens is then placed inside the eye where the cloudy lens used to be. Cataract surgery continues to

improve. Recent developments include no-stitch sur-gery, topical anesthesia, surgical correction of astig-matism, and new upgraded premium lens designs. Eye drops are given to the patient to aid in the healing of the eye, which takes a few months, but the patient is able to return to normal activity almost immediately after sur-gery and usually sees well within just days.

If the eye is otherwise healthy, cataract surgery is suc-cessful in more than 98% of patients and they enjoy improved vision after the procedure.ABOUT DR. STANLEY BRAVERMAN

AVENTURA CONFIDENTIAL: Buying into the neighborhoodI remember when I first moved to Aventura in 1998.

My realtor whisked me from South Beach to Weston to Plantation to Pompano in an exhaustive search for the perfect apartment. Just as I began to lose hope of ever finding a South Florida neighborhood to call home, the majestic palm trees on Williams Island Boulevard waved in the wind, beckoning me to leave the traffic nightmare on Biscayne Blvd. to explore a narrow strip of land between the congestion of US1 and the Intracoastal, a little paradise called Aventura. I turned the corner, saw the boats on Little Maule Lake, and I became hooked on Aventura.

I rented in Lincoln Pointe and two years later, I bought a condo in the last stages of construction, around the block, in breathtaking Hidden Bay.

I’m flabbergasted at how much the prices have gone up in this excellent neighborhood since 1998. When I moved into Lincoln Pointe 15 years ago, the price of my two-bedroom loft apartment was pretty hefty at just under $1,200. That same space now costs $1,738 – 1,843 – over a 50% increase.

I got a real deal when I bought in Hidden Bay. I bought small and got a one bedroom, since I wasn’t sure if I would even like condo living. I assumed a contract from someone facing foreclosure on multiple

units and closed with the developer at a fantastic price. The two bedrooms in Hidden Bay were running about $250,000 and now you can hardly touch one for under $500,000. I kick myself for not buying more space, although there have been times that the little one bedroom was as much expense as I could handle.

Regardless of the economy, the prices in Aventura seem to have no upper limit. Eight to ten

years ago, my realtor, Mindy Bloom, says you could buy preconstruction in Turnberry on the Green or Turnberry Village for about $400,000. At that time, around 2002, I remember sitting in my favorite perch by the marina at Hidden Bay. I turned around and counted 18 cranes during Aventura’s last building boom, amazed at all of the money invested in a luxury real estate.

Today, the new Marina Palms and Echo-Aventura preconstruction prices start in the $600’s. Those are value-priced compared to Bellini and the other new luxury offerings, although you can get about 400 square feet in preconstruction for $170,000 in Costa Hollywood. These prices are just crazy. Nutso!

I am proud to be an American and I love the multi-culture ethnicity that comprises Aventura. But there’s something to be said for being born in South America. The South Americans are the ones with all the money these days. They’ve got cold, hard cash to buy a condo in Aventura, USA and keep the prices as high as the skyscrapers that we call home.About Lisa Overing:

(BPT) - Post-holiday sales aren’t the only deals to be found during the winter months. Starting in January, and running all winter-long, boat shows take place across the country. They offer some of the best pricing and incentives of the year - a major draw for the 83 million Americans who take to the water each year. For those ready to plan their summer fun, boat shows are often the place to start.

Boat shows create a unique shopping experience since hundreds of boats are under one roof to board, browse and buy, however, most people don’t know about the additional perks these events offer. Discover Boating, the national awareness program to help get people on the water, offers the following tips to make those boating

Dreaming Of Summer Fun?Why winter is one of the best times to buy a boatGet a taste of summer at local boat show

dreams a reality:• Do that nautical homework.

Before attending a local boat show, do a little research and have a plan. Spend time on DiscoverBoating.com to research different types of boats that fit your budget and lifestyle with a new boat selector tool or use the loan calculator to estimate monthly payments. There’s even a boat show finder to locate a boat show in your area.

• Warm up with hot deals. Unlike auto shows, boat shows are the place to buy. Hundreds of new-year models are available to buy right at the show often at some of the best prices of the year as exhibitors generally offer special show pricing or other incentives. Plus, it’s the perfect time to order a new boat to ensure it arrives ready to launch in spring.

• Try out the boating lifestyle.Boat shows are a great place for beginners looking to learn not only about the boat buying process, but also the boating lifestyle. Find a show with a “Welcome to the Water Center” that offers unbiased advice on finding a boat that best suits your lifestyle and budget. Many also offer boater education - from getting a captain’s license to learning how to dock a boat, as well as displays of boats that can be financed for $250 a month or less.

• Get your feet wet. Boat shows bring the great outdoors indoors, creating an environment to enjoy the sights and sounds of summer. With affordable admission prices, anyone can take advantage of an array of activities (often at no

additional cost) including: scuba diving, fishing for kids, paddle sports, seminars, antique boats, giveaways and more. Plus, it’s a great place to meet other boaters as many make their local boat show a winter rendezvous.

• Look for the seal of approval.Keep an eye out for a few key “seals of approval” when shopping the show. Marine Five Star Certified Dealers are retailers who have made a commitment to making the buying and maintenance of a

boat both pleasant experiences. Boats marked NMMA Certified have met strict industry product quality standards.

Winter boat shows are an easy way to learn how to get on the water, plus a chance to enjoy a taste of summer during the coldest months of the year. Visit DiscoverBoating.com to find a boat show near you, a list of certified dealers and manufacturers, and unbiased advice for getting started in boating.

(BPT) - In the past, giving money to a charity was considered one of the best ways to do a good deed. But thanks to modern technology, the face of phi-lanthropy is changing as people around the world become more connected.

Lending a helping hand to people has always been an inherently good thing. But new perspectives have emerged about how phi-

lanthropy really affects those it’s meant to help. As a result of these new per-spectives, the ways in which people on both ends of the equation relate to and understand each other have evolved. Philanthropy 2.0 is about making real connections, furthering understanding and building a better future with people whose faces are visible, names are knowable, and achieve-ments can be shared.

So what does philan-thropy 2.0 look like in practical terms? A few examples shed light on how doing good has changed, and where it’s headed.

• Lending: Lending may not have fit into the philanthropy category in the past, but in the age of philanthropy 2.0, lending

Join the next generation of doing good - philanthropy 2.0

lets people go beyond tra-ditional giving. The con-cept has grown dramati-cally through organi-zations like Kiva, which enables anyone with an Internet connection and $25 to make a micro-loan to one of thousands of low-income entrepreneurs in over 60 countries, including the U.S. Lenders can simply go to www.kiva.org to find a bor-

rower to lend $25 to - it might be a student in Kenya, a seamstress in India or a farmer in Guatemala. Philanthropy 2.0 means you get to connect, through your micro-loan, to an individual borrower’s efforts to build a better future for them-selves, their fam-ily and their com-munity. When a

borrower repays a loan - and it’s worth noting that Kiva’s repayment rate is 99 percent - you can choose a new recipient, so the cycle of support continues. You can also give a Kiva Card as a gift, providing your family and friends with a unique opportunity to connect with causes and places they care about as they choose borrowers they’d like to support. And like a regular Kiva loan, the funds can be used again and again.

• Giving: Dropping a few coins in a collection box is a longstanding method of gathering funds for charity, but as organi-zations try to attract new audiences and donors, they’ve developed new approaches. It’s now essential for charities to have an active, multi-

faceted Web and social media presence. The level of connection that’s so much a part of philan-thropy 2.0 is much easier to achieve with interactiv-ity on multiple platforms, from Twitter and Facebook to Tumblr and Instagram. When it comes to mobile, widely acknowledged as the next frontier in mar-keting, the philanthropic movement is ahead of the crowd. In the wake of natural disasters in recent years, there have been countless calls for people to text their donations to organizations serving affected communities.

• Volunteering:Sometimes, lending a hand is just as important as lending a dollar - but many charities have spe-cialized tasks that aren’t right for every volunteer. Today, there is new aware-ness about ways to make volunteering more effec-tive. Matching people with the right skills to the right job is an important ele-ment in increasing effi-ciency. The website VolunteerMatch has emerged as a leading way for volunteer to find posi-tions that match their expertise and skills - and for charities to recruit vol-unteers. -

The world is still a big place, but technology is making -it feel much smaller. It’s no longer a novelty to be able to inter-act with someone across the globe instantaneously. That new level of connect-edness that we all share has helped to reshape the face of doing good. To find out just how easy it is to make a difference in phi-lanthropy 2.0, visit www.kiva.org to make a loan or give a Kiva Card.

TAURUS(April 20- May 20)

You have a fantastic month ahead. Migrating planets are gathering in fellow earth sign Capricorn, creating a crown of stars that will glitter in the heavens in the broadening ninth house. This area of the chart, found at the top of your chart, is forming, along with your tenth house of career honors, what the ancients called “the mid-heaven” - a very lofty special place indeed.

GEMINI(May 21 - June 20)

January will be unusual in that during the first three weeks you will be almost entirely consumed by talks about finances. You are not normally so centered on money, so clearly something is going on in your life to cause this to happen.

CANCER(June 21 - July 22)

Your key to success this month will be collaboration. A remarkable number of planets, all in Capricorn, are in the process of moving into your seventh house of partnerships, including the Sun, Mercury, Pluto, Venus, and soon, the most important heavenly body, the new moon in Capricorn, to arrive soon this month.

LEO(July 23- August 22)

The beginning of January is remarkable in that a large, glittering cluster of planets will be meeting in your sixth house of work projects and health. Pluto and Mercury are already there and will welcome the other coming dignitaries, including the Sun, Venus, and in the middle of the month, the magnificent new moon.

VIRGO(August 23 - September 22)

You are about to enter the most romantic, tender, and bewitching month of 2013. If you are single and hoping to find love or if you are attached and hope to have more time and attention from the person you already love, this is your month.

LIBRA(September 23 - October 22)

This is the month to take a look at your living situation and make any changes you have been meaning to do. You

SCORPIO(October 23 - November 21)

In January there will be very little warm up - you’ll have to hit the ground running. Phone calls, emails, and hastily arranged meetings will keep you on your skateboard, but even so, you’ll love the flurry of activity. If you are self-employed, business will be booming.

SAGITTARIUS(November 22 - December 21)

This will be a big month for finances, and you seem to have your mind set on getting a grip on your income and outgo. I say this because in January we will have a gathering of five stars in Capricorn, a conservative, careful, disciplined sign that is wise about money. All five of the heavenly bodies will be gathering in your second house of financial income, possessions, and wealth.

CAPRICORN(December 22 - January 19)

You are about to enter the most powerful birthday month that you have seen in years. In 2013, we will have a series of remarkable events in several of the early months of the year involving what astrologers call the formation of “a crown of stars.” This happens when you see a number of planets line up in the same sign, and all crowd into one house.

AQUARIUS(January 20- February 18)

This will be a very unusual month, where the first three weeks are very quiet and the last third of the month will be very active. What we have in the heavens is a clustering of five planets in your twelfth house, considered a house of privacy. This is A LOT of energy to have in any house of the horoscope, so if you feel like spending time alone, you can attribute that yearning to those loving planets, encouraging you to muse about the future.

PISCES(February 19 - March 20)

Although all your friends seemed to have been kicking up their heels in December, last month was such a critical month for you to make a name for yourself that you likely chose to work very hard. That’s not to say you didn’t have a happy holiday - you likely did, because Mars will helping you in that department, and friends were certainly including you on their activities.

may plan a big change, like to move house or to stage a massive renovation, or you may make small improvements and repairs, like ordering a paint job, attending to windows or a roof that needs attention, or you may simply be determined to clear out clutter.

Harmful sun exposure can happen at any time of year

(BPT) - Protecting your skin from the sun is a 365 day-a-year job. Summer is officially over, but all the sun exposure from sunny days at a beach, playing outdoor sports or soaking up the rays may have damaged your skin, forming dark brown spots that make your skin look dull and lackluster. Even sun exposure during the winter months can harm your skin. UVA rays, called the rays of aging, are everywhere and can penetrate even on cloudy days and through glass windows in your home or car. These rays are responsible for damage like wrinkles, brown spots and skin cancer. Sun damage is cumulative and begins in childhood, so protecting from the early ages - babies too - with sun protection or clothing is an important step.

If you don’t routinely use sunscreen, your skin is at risk for premature aging, and also for developing skin cancer, especially melanoma, the deadliest form. The other consequences that may not be life threatening include wrinkles, an uneven complexion and discoloration and dark spots on the face, chest and hands.Be kind to your skin

“Using adequate sunscreen is vital daily component for all skin types to guard against deadly skin cancer and the ravaging effects of UVA/UVB exposure on your skin,” says Washington D.C. dermatologist Cheryl Burgess. “Everyone is susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer, even skin of color. There is no such thing as a safe tan - unless it comes out of a bottle or tube of self-tanner.” She recommends that you apply broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 that protects against UVA and UVB rays every two hours, and reapply after swimming or sweating. Make this step part of your daily morning regimen year round by applying your sunscreen under makeup.Reversing the damage

Even if you religiously protect your skin now, past damage can rear its ugly head in the form of mottled hyperpigmentation like sunspots and brown patches. Remember that the groundwork for this discoloration was laid years ago by sun exposure and environmental factors. Invasive procedures like lasers or light based treatments and deep peels can reduce the appearance of these spots, but these treatments are expensive and often require some downtime. Skin brightening

regimens available through dermatologists or plastic surgeons can often be the first line of treatment help to reduce the appearance of dull, damaged and pigmented skin. Traditionally, the active ingredient in skin lighteners has been hydroquinone, which can cause a whole host of unwanted effects such as photosensitivity and dark blue or black-pigmented lesions.

Fortunately, new formulations exist

that are effective alternatives to invasive procedures and do not contain hydroquinone. “One of the newest options is the elure Advanced Brightening System from Syneron Medical,” says Greg Nikolaidis, a dermatologist at Westlake Dermatology in Austin, Texas. “These products are clinically proven to break up discoloration in the skin. They contain a powerful ingredient called Melanozyme, a natural enzyme derived from a tree mushroom that reduces unsightly discoloration found on the surface of the skin, without irritation. Another benefit of elure is that it is safe for all skin types, without the risk of side effects that can be caused by other topical products traditionally used to treat sun damaged skin.”

The elure system includes a gentle facial cleanser that neutralizes the pH to prep the skin, a two pump, easy-to-use lotion and a rich moisturizing night cream. In several clinical studies, elure produced a brighter and more even skin tone for most subjects in as little as 28 days. Dermatologists advise their patients to always use an SPF30 during the day in addition to elure.

-”Protect your skin now to avoid unwanted dark spots on your skin later. But if you do develop areas of discoloration, elure may be an ideal therapy for you,” Burgess says.

HEALTHIS IT TIME FOR A CHANGE?How Therapy Works and How to Know When We Need It

JodiBrazlavsky, LCSWJodi Brazlavsky is a licensed psychotherapistwho has provided therapy, assessment and consul-tation services to the South Florida community for 16 years. She provides cognitive-behavioral ther-apy, supportive counseling and psychotherapy for children, adults and fami-lies who are dealing with a variety of psycho-social stressors.

By Jodi Brazlavsky, LCSW - Aventura Digest

Many of us struggle day to day with something that has knock-ed us off balance. For some, the issues are specific. For others, it may be difficult to pinpoint the cause of our distress. One thing is certain. Each of us has dealt with or will deal with uncertainty and difficult times during our lives.

The purpose of therapy is well-defined. The relationship be-tween therapist and client is dif-ferent from our relationships with family or friends. The therapeutic alliance is one that is marked with empathy and unconditional positive regard.

Even though clients present with different issues in treat-ment, ironically, I am often asked one common question, “Can you help me?” With a strong therapeutic relationship notable gains can be achieved.

Therapeutic outcomes can never be predetermined, but as a clinician I see myself as a cata-lyst for change. Therapy can be hard work. The process can help us to answer questions we have about our lives and feelings: Have we been honest with our spouse? Have we made the right decisions for our children? Have we enabled family members to manipulate or to take advantage of us? It forces us to look inward, but with the help of an objective eye and nonjudgmental support; and this process of self-exploration can be productive and enlightening.

The therapeutic process assists us in taking a closer look into our individuality, at our own self-worth. This helps us in getting our needs met. Therapy pro-motes empowerment, cultivates strengths and helps to develop better coping skills. But how

exactly does this happen? The idea of empowerment and

how it relates to the therapeutic process is important for my cli-ents to understand. It means that I encourage individuals that I work with to develop skills that help them to take on new per-spectives, thereby allowing them to manage obstacles in their lives.

Whether an individual is deal-ing with depression, anxiety, trauma, divorce, or substance abuse, one thing remains the same: We are not powerless in our relationships, feelings and/or decisions.

We all have the ability to change and therapy can be a great way to facilitate this process. In the face of the New Year we can create inner peace with the idea that our goals are possible.

Use the new year as an opportunity for a fresh start(BPT) - The flip of the calendar year is

the perfect opportunity to make personal and lifestyle changes. One of the most popular resolutions that people make is to improve their health and exercise routine so they can make a fresh start and get into better shape. Now is the time to develop fitness goals for a new you this new year. Despite your best intentions and resolutions to revamp your fitness routine each year, it’s easy to slip back into your pre-new year’s resolution bad habits. The best way to avoid this tendency is to create an active lifestyle plan that works for you and will keep you motivated. Here are a few tips to get a fresh fitness start and make sure that you stay active this new year.

Establish fitness goals and write them down. Setting manageable goals and writing down an exercise plan that is realistic and works for your lifestyle will have a positive impact on your overall quality of life and motivate you to keep going. As you check back on your plan each day, it will hold you accountable and make sure that you’re continuing to follow the road that you’ve mapped out for yourself.

Pick an app that motivates you. No matter what your fitness interests are, there’s an app for you: Pick your pleasure ... yoga, running, weights or cardio, and you can find apps that inspire and motivate you with workout ideas and tips. If you’re also looking to watch your food intake, there are a myriad of apps that can help you keep track of what you’re eating each day.

Freshen up your workout wardrobe. As you refresh your exercise routine, you’ll go through workout gear more quickly than before. Treat yourself by buying yourself some new exercise gear that will benefit your routine and make sure you maintain it. One way to provide amazing freshness for your used active wear is to wash it in Downy Unstopables, an in-wash scent booster. The scent lasts for up to 12 weeks in storage, which makes Downy Unstopables perfect for gym clothes and workout towels as it keeps them fresh no matter when they’re pulled out of storage.

Reality TV star and fitness fanatic Roberto Martinez understands the importance of incorporating freshness into his workout routine. “I live a very

active lifestyle, so I know that keeping workout gear fresh can be tough, Downy Unstopables keeps my clothes smelling so fresh and so clean,” he says. Visit www.facebook.com/Downy to learn more about how you can keep your new year’s fitness resolutions fresh with Downy Unstopables.

Join an exercise group or find a workout partner. Working out alone in a gym is not for everyone. Exercisers should

choose an activity they enjoy doing, that keeps them excited and can be sustained over a long period of time. Additionally, having a support system to motivate you will help you stick with the program and see long-term results - find a group or buddy who has similar goals to you.

With every new obstacle, find alternatives that will bring you closer to attaining your goal. Never give up. It’s a new year, and it’s time to get moving.

How to truly make your patio an extension of your home

(BPT) - If you’re like many homeowners, you consider the patio an extension of your home. So it’s fair to ask: Would you be just as comfortable nestled in with your favorite book or preparing a meal in your outdoor space as you would in your living room or your kitchen? As you contemplate ways to improve your outdoor area, think about projects that can both extend the hours you spend outside and make the time you spend there more relaxing.

Just as technology continues to make life indoors easier, more sophisticated awning systems, cooling options and lighting can make your outdoor space that much more pleasant. Here are a few areas to consider

as you plot your next round of improvements for your outdoor living space:

• Temperature control: One of the best ways to make your patio pleasant for more of the day - and more of the year - is to add simple temperature control features. If you live in a place where it gets uncomfortably hot during the summer, install misters around your favorite sitting areas to cool things down. Likewise, if you often find yourself heading inside because it gets too chilly in the spring and fall, a few strategically placed overhead heaters can extend your patio season.

• Shade matters: Awnings and umbrellas also play a huge role in

regulating the temperature and comfort of your deck or patio. And now, shading options have become more sophisticated and easier to maintain than ever before. You’ll never have to worry about damaged awnings on a windy day with Somfy’s motorized awning systems and wind sensors that work together to automatically retract your awnings when winds become too high.-Retractable awning systems powered by Somfy can also be accessorized with sun sensors that signal motorized awnings to open as soon as the sun rises, keeping your outdoor space cool from the start of the day.- If

adding a hint of warmth is needed, simply install an awning heater - All of these accessories can be managed by the same remote that controls your motorized awning. With a system like this, you can leave the days of fiddling

with fussy patio umbrellas behind.

• An outdoor kitchen: No patio is complete without a grill, but do you find yourself making frequent trips inside for other prep work? Make outdoor cooking easier by adding a prep island that can be placed near your grill. And if you really want

to go all out, look for options that feature outdoor sinks or small refrigerators hidden under the countertop.

• Entertainment connectivity: Well-placed speakers can bring the stereo sound of your indoor system out. By upgrading your system so it can be controlled from your wireless device, you can bring the conveniences of your digital music system outdoors and eliminate the need to get up to turn up the volume or flip to the next song.

• Take look at your lighting: High-powered outdoor lights on sensors might be helpful when you’re bringing in the groceries at night, but patio entertaining calls for a little more subtlety when it comes to lighting. Consider zero-energy solar-powered fixtures around the perimeter of your patio for a gentle ambiance to light up your evenings. Somfy’s motorized systems can also be connected to your lighting, allowing you to adjust brightness as needed from the comfort of your patio lounger.

Now is the perfect time to plan for next year’s patio season, and with the right improvements, you can make it the most comfortable one yet. For more ideas and products that can make your outdoor space that much more hospitable, visit www.somfysystems.com.
