The New Year begins in abuoyant mood

January tends to be commercially quiet in Cyprus inthe aftermath of Christmas; the Cypriots start theirfestivities early on December 6th, St Nicholas Day– and continue for a month until the Feast ofEpiphany on January 6th. It’s traditionally a solemn, religious holiday period; beautiful carols called“kalanda” have been handed down from Byzantinetimes and add to the reverent quality of thecelebration. After Midnight Mass, families gathertogether to share a meal, marking the end of theChristmas fasting period.

While other cultures have Christmas elves, the Cypriot equivalent is not so benign.

According to myth, mischievous andsometimes even dangerous sprites called“Kalikantzari” prey upon people, but onlyduring the 12 days of Christmas, from Christmas Eve to Epiphany Day, on January,6th.

In the olden days, the children used toget their presents on New Year's Dayand not on Christmas Day, as their“Santa” is Ayios Vasilis, whom theycelebrate on January 1st. Ayios Vasilisis every Cypriot child’s favourite saintas he ALWAYS arrives with presents.

Days later, the older generation used to“ploumizoun” (give money) to their

grandchildren on the morning of Epiphany Day, on 6th January. The children, would go early in the morning to their grandparents, chanting the following verse:“Kalimera ke ta phota ke tin ploumistira prota” (Good morning on this day of lightand let us have our gift first). Needless to say, the grandparents were delighted tosee them and handed over their festive pocket money.

This year Epiphany – a public holiday falls on a Monday, so it may be as late asthe following week before businesses get fully back in gear and the month starts togain momentum with the number of listings coming on the market. Now is the time

to expect house prices to be competitive as owners of properties that have been onthe market throughout the winter are settling theirplans for 2014 and wanting to release their equity. And then, before you know it, Chinese New Yearwill be upon us at the end of the month!

The regulations governing Chinese buyers inCyprus are changing by the month, but we expect towelcome some buyers from the east ‘Gong Xi FaCai!’ after their important holiday.

Property continues to consolidate at low openmarket values. Pricing is moreconfident though as more keen buyers enter the market and, if the Halifax HousingSurvey in UK is to be believed, the British property market shows no sign ofslowing down. There’s no doubt that the British are still the largest group ofprospective buyers and that our climate is one of the reasons they consider Cyprus.

At Fitzgeralds we are looking forward to a bright and busy 2014 concentrating, aswe always do, on 'Quality Property at Realistic Prices with Title Deeds'. After thefinancial mayhem of 2013, we hope that 2014 will improve because the bankingsituation appears to be stabilised, buyers from overseas (particularly Britain) aredoing better and want to buy in Cyprus. And we guarantee we’ll have someexcellent properties to choose from!

From another perspective the prospects of the Cyprus Gas Fields now beingexplored by America’s Noble Oil, are enormous. This development will bring a different type ofbuyer to the marketplace and there will be ascramble for excellent properties of all types andprices. To this end, Fitzgeralds are starting totake on properties in the Limassol area, to add tothose we already have in Pissouri and Prastio, east of Paphos. This element of our businesswill be managed by Lisa Sofocleous whooperates for us out of Pissouri

The Fitzgerald offices will be closed on January1st and January 6th 2014

With the exception of the Christmas holiday period, www.fitzgeraldcyprus.comachieves results all year round. So if you have a quality property with Title Deedsand you are happy to sell at the open market value, the site to advertise iswww.fitzgeraldcyprus.com

What traditions to expect in Cyprus thisJanuary

01 January, New Year. Welcome tothe New Year: 'Protochronia'. As theclock strikes midnight, the arrival ofthe New Year is marked withfireworks filling the night sky. Aswell as celebrating the arrival of anew year, traditionally it is AyiosVasilis (Saint Basil) who bringseveryone’s gifts when he arrives onthe night of New Year’s Eve in timefor his Name Day on 1 January.

Soon after midnight, families gather together to share their Vasilopitta: ‘Basil’s Pie’,is a delicious sponge cake flavoured with localoranges and brandy, with the New Year writtenin almonds on the top. There’s great ceremonyas the head of the family 'crosses' the cake tobless it and then cuts into it, putting the firsttwo slices aside to be given to the church andChrist and thepoor. He thenserves himself thethird slice, his wife

the next and all the family and friends are given theirslice served in descending age order. One person willfind a silver or sometimes gold coin hidden in theirslice and this ensures good luck for the whole yearahead.

06 January, Epiphany:The 12th day ofChristmas. The festivalof Epiphany is known inCyprus as ‘Ta Fota’which means ‘the light’.It’s is a big festival thatcelebrates the baptism ofChrist and revelry takesplace at all the harbours.

"The Office"

Being a family business we have one officecentrally situated in Paphos close to and inwalking distance of both the Paphos Harbourand the Tomb of the kings Road.

From the harbour walk up towards theBegonia Garden centre at the traffic lights andwe are on the left just before the “WishingTree”.Coming from the Tomb of the kings turn rightat the traffic lights (or cut through by the

Roman Hotel) and we are a short way downon the right just after the “Wishing Tree”.

Office hours are 9am to 5.30pm 6 days aweek with no break for lunch.

So if you are working and only have yourlunch break to come and see us, you arewelcome!

In Paphos, the Bishop leads a procession of school children and members of youthorganisations along to the harbour accompanied by the local band. During thisservice, the Bishop dramatically tosses his processional cross into the sea to blessthe waters and scores of local lads dive in quickly to retrieve it: he who does isensured of good luck for the year.

Everyone spends time around the harbour area andeveryone wanders around dressed in their bestclothes and enjoying lokoumades tiny honeysoaked doughnuts – often bought from specialistroadside stalls.

Away from the bustle of the festivities, some of ourolder Cypriots may quietly wash their fruit andvegetables in the blessed seawater to ensure thatthey have a bountiful harvest in the autumn.

Years of the Horse

02/11/191801/31/191901/30/193002/16/193102/15/194202/04/194302/03/195401/23/195501/21/196602/08/196702/07/197801/27/197901/27/199002/14/199102/12/200201/31/200301/31/201402/18/201502/17/202602/05/202702/04/203801/23/203901/23/205002/10/2051

The spirit of the horse is recognized to be the Chinese people's ethos – makingunremitting efforts to improve themselves. It is energetic, bright, warmhearted, intelligent and able. Ancient people liked to designate an able person as 'Qianli Ma',a horse that covers a thousand li a day (one li equals 500 meters).

StrengthsPeople born in the year of the horse have ingenious communicating techniques andin their community they always want to be in the limelight. They are clever, kind toothers, and like to join in a venture career. Although they sometimes talk too much, they are cheerful, perceptive, talented, earthy but stubborn. They like entertainmentand large crowds. They are popular among friends, active at work and refuse to bereconciled to failure, although their endeavor cannot last indefinitely.

WeaknessesThey cannot bear too much constraint. However their interest may be onlysuperficial and lacking real substance. They are usually impatient and hot bloodedabout everything other than their daily work. They are independent and rarely listento advice. Failure may result in pessimism. They usually have strong endurance butwith bad temper. Flamboyant by nature, they are wasteful since they are not goodwith matters of finance due to a lack of budgetary efficiency. Some of those whoare born in the horse like to move in glamorous circles while pursuing high profilecareers. They tend to interfere in many things and frequently fail to finish projectsof their own.
