Preface Throughout my life I have been very passionate about making music. I have not only just composed music but I have performed as a guitarist for 10 years and I have also learned to play different instruments mainly to learn how to write for them better. As a child I have tried different sports and after school activities and I have quit most of them too. Music making was the only thing that I could never drop. It was my tool for self-expression and social identity. As I grew older I started to write and take lessons and my interests for writing more complex music slowly started to make me analyze other music and take interest in music theory. When I was still in grade school my mother told me that in Holland they have a music school called a conservatory where I can study music on a high level and become a professional musician but I could only get in after graduating from high school. After I heard this I made it my life mission to finish high school just so that I can study music after that. And of course I had to take different music lessons at our local music school too in order to get there. It took a long time before I finally got accepted at the conservatory but I have done so many things in between and I have learned so much, that I think that it was for the best that it happened in this chronology. I am very grateful to have studied at the FHK because of all of the possibilities that I have made use of here in the last 4 years. Now I look forwards towards the future knowing that I will do all that I can to become the best artist that I can be and I hope that I can inspire others to do the same.

Introduction In this portfolio you will get to know me as an artist. I will share with you what I consider my best works so far and I will share with you my music biography. You will learn how I came into contact with music and how I developed as an artist throughout my whole life up two March of 2018. I will share with you my experience at the Fonty’s academy of music and performing arts and my plans for the future. Finally I will share with you the platforms that I use to share my music. This document seems a bit long but my history is also very long seeing as how I am a bit older than most of the other nominees. I hope you enjoy the journey through my written life experience and thoughts about the future just as much as I have enjoyed living it.

Composing experience The following is a list of the Highlights in my composing career. I have composed many more music but I have narrowed the list down to these compositions to keep the document short. “Het spel” (the game) March-17-2018 I worked together with a composer colleague Loes Reiling on an opera for the Opera Forward Festival of Amsterdam. It was a 20 minute mini-opera that was based on the painting of Théodore Géricault called “Le Radeau de la Méduse” (the raft of Medusa). The main theme of the opera was Faith which was also the theme of the festival of that year. The opera went into premiere on March 17th of 2018 in the Odeonzaal of the National opera & Ballet in Amsterdam and it was performed by the students of Fonty’s academy of music and performing arts. The video is available at: https://www.xg-music.com/opera

Bonus: Our opera was attended by director Pierre Audi during the final performance and he told us that our opera was the most progressive opera that he had seen so far during the Opera Forward Festivals. Our innovative direction combined with modern music and progressive scenography while still using the traditional opera voice was something that he found very interesting. Project Ruins: Mother’s Home March-11-2018 Project Ruins is a project where I compose music for the Ruins of Aruba based on what they look like and what their history was. Mother’s home was the first ruin in this project. It was the house of the parents of Juan “Chabaya” Lampe a.k.a. Padu Del Caribe, one of the most known composers of Aruba. I composed a 5 movement piece for guitar solo for this ruin. Later I decided to add dance to it since the 5 movements are based on the traditional dance music of Aruba. The dance was choreographed and performed by Sarah Prescimone. The premiere took place at “de Kring” in Roosendaal on March-11-2018. The video is available: https://www.xg-music.com/dance-projects “Het is waar”(it is real) December-22-2017 This was one of the best colaborations that I have had so far. I worked very closely with choreographer Hanna-Lina Hutzfeldt for 3 months and we created a performance that blended the world of music and dance very well together. It was performed on December-22-2017 during the night of the arts festival at Fonty’s academy of music and performing arts by the Bron Quartet. The performance has a total length of 13 minutes. The video is available at: https://www.xg-music.com/dance-projects Juxtaposition November-09-2017 This was a composition for the Fiumaraton event that took place during the November music festival in s’Hertogenbosch. It was a 3 minute minimal music composition that had 3 different processes happening at the same time.

It was performed on November-09-2017 in the “Willem Twee Concertzaal” in s’Hertogenbosch and on November-26-2017 in the “cenakel” in Tilburg by the FC Jongebloed ensemble. The Video is available at: https://www.xg-music.com/classical-music Mil esperanza October-07-2017 I was asked by “De link” to be a part of “de nachtkroeg”, an event that was celebrating 100 years of “de stijl” magazine. I composed a piece in a similar way to the poetry of Anthony Kok, a famous Dutch writer and co-founder of “de stijl” magazine, and I also took inspiration from Cabaret Voltaire by Hugo ball and the DADA movement which was the Avant-garde art of that time. It was performed by Rianne Wilbers and a player piano (a self-playing piano “pianola”) in the salon at the Nwe Vorst in Tilburg on October-07-2017. There are no video’s available. Ashes to Ashes January-11-2017 I was asked to compose a piece for the saxophone ensemble of Fonty’s academy of music and performing arts by Andreas van Zoelen (a member of the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet, this quartet is considered to be the best saxophone quartet in the world). He then told me it has to be the best piece that I have ever written and if he approves it they will perform it at the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. I composed this peace based on the circle of life concept, and I took my inspiration from the Pink Floyd album “Dark side of the moon”. It went into premiere on January-11-2017 in the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. It was performed by the saxophone ensemble of Fonty’s academy of music and performing arts and it was directed by Andreas van Zoelen. This piece is 13 minutes long. The video is available at: https://www.xg-music.com/classical-music/

Bonus: We had a special guest. I was able to get the Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba to attend the performance. Andreas, the minister and I socialized after the show and I was allowed to ride with the minister back to Den Haag during which I told him my history with music and my future plans. He was very interested in my music career. He later insisted that we perform the piece again for his farewell party in October of 2017, but due to technical difficulties it wasn’t possible to organize the saxophone ensemble to perform in Den Haag. But I did manage to perform there myself instead and he and his colleagues were happy to have us there. The audience at the farewell party consisted of colleagues of the Minister, workers from the “Arubahuis”, the Minister Plenipotentiary of curacao Anthony Begina, president of the first chamber Ankie Broekers-Knol, Leader of CDA Sybrand van Haersma Buma, the diplomatic representative of America Shawn Patrick Crowley, Minister Plenipotentiary of Sint Maartin Henrietta Doran-York and a few other guests from the High class.

Biography I was born on the 2nd of august 1987 on a tropical Island called Aruba. As a child I was often encouraged to play small percussions (like maracas) by my parents at family parties. My family was a musical family and it was their tradition to make music during birthday parties or other special occasion parties. It was normal to switch music instruments in between songs. This was done because not everyone could play all of the songs on the guitar, but everyone could play a percussion instrument so they would exchange instruments in between the songs. I wanted to play the guitar too but I was not allowed to play it at the time because I was too small to hold something so expensive and fragile, and I did not know how to play it yet. At 5 years old my mother thought me to play 3 basic chords on the Venezuelan cuatro, and at the age of 6 I met a friend who thought me to play more chords. At the age of 7 my mother started teaching me a few chords on the classical guitar and at the age of 10 I started taking classical guitar lessons at the Rufo Wever’s music school of Aruba. I have also joined my family’s children choir and during my voice changing years I stopped singing with them but I continue to play for them on my Venezuelan cuatro. I also joined a children folklore band and I started performing at various folklore events during holidays. I also competed in various cultural song festivals including the National Flag day festivals and the “Dande” festival.

Image 1: me singing dande with

“Tipico Hubenil Santa Cruz” (tipical, youth of Santa Cruz) On December 1999 at the age of 12 I bought my first electric guitar and joined my first band. This is when I started writing songs for the first time. I also joined a local scout group (“verkenners”) which had a brass band and I have performed with them on a few occasions on the snare drum, tenor and trumpet. At the age of 13 I stopped taking classical guitar lessons and I started taking jazz improvisation lessons on my electric guitar. I was also writing and arranging complete songs for my band. A year later I started taking lessons in sight reading and ear training. At the age of 15 I joined the music school’s jazz ensemble and started taking lessons in jazz harmony. I then received a certificate as a supreme advanced Cuatro performer, and the certificate was given to me by the famous Aruban composer “Padu del Caribe”.

I also performed for Queen Beatrix and her family at a farm in the National Park in Aruba with the Folklore band.

In 2006 (at 18 years old) I graduated from high school. A year later I went to the Netherlands to continue my music career. In 2008 I was accepted in the preparation year of Fonty’s conservatory but I failed to enter first year after that due to getting distracted from my studies by the recording sessions and live performances that I was doing with my band at that time (everyone in the band from Aruba came to the Netherland to study and continue with our music career). Between the years 2008 and 2012 I had spent most of my time studying and experimenting with different music genres. I also started buying different musical instruments initially to record their parts myself since I couldn’t afford musicians. Later this turned into a learning tool, teaching myself how to write better for those instruments by learning and getting a feel for how these instrument are being played by the musicians. I also played with 2 different bands (“Unwanted by Neighbours” and “Genjam”) and I accompanied different artists like Andre Hazel, Shamira van Ilha, Talitha (Helena) Holl, Groove embassy and many more. At that time I was playing live shows every 2 weeks in various clubs and concert halls including Paard van Troj(den Haag), Baroeg(Rotterdam), the Waterhole(Amsterdam), Winston Kingdom(Amsterdam) and many more. I was also writing and co-writing songs and recording them with various artists.

On January 14th 2012 I started taking my first lessons in orchestration for film and tv using the berklee online certificate programs. By the end of September I received a specialist certificate from

this course. By then I was orchestrating my own compositions and arrangements. Some of these are available on youtube. I wrote a few concertos for string ensemble, one of which is still being performed by the “Jeugd strijk ensemble” in Apeldoorn. 2013 was a year of study and progress. I expanded the online courses to a Master’s program (which includes 8 different courses) and I was also studying classical music in my free time. In October I started working with Tamara “Claymara” Tanger (a clay animation artist). I was composing background music for her clay animations. I have also been studying to become a piano technician since 2012. I have successfully graduated from this school in 2014 with one of the highest grades in the class of 2014.

Image 6: me tuning my Parent’s piano

In 2014 I was accepted at the Forty’s academy of music and performing arts in Tilburg, and I started my bachelors study in classical music composition. I also finished my certificate program and received a master’s certificate in orchestration for film and tv. I also participated in the composition meets choreography event that takes place during the night of the arts festival at the Fonty’s academy of music and performing arts. I also participated in a “dande” Festival of that year in Rotterdam and I came in second place.

In 2015 I earned my propaedeutic diploma and I co-organized my first classical music event. Later that year I was invited to be a part of the composition meets choreography event again. I also composed a piece called “Tumbacali” for the FC jongebloed ensemble. This piece has become a source of inspiration for me, because of the use of Aruban Rhythms in combination with European music composition techniques.

    Image 8: me composing music

on a grand piano at school Early in 2016 I started researching the music history of Aruba. I wanted to use this knowledge in my upcoming compositions. During this year I visited Aruba 2 times to continue this research. Next to this research I started experimenting a lot more with the Aruban rhythms and mixing them with European classical music. In March of that same year I participated in an “aftertalk” (a discussion between student- and professional artists about the current and future direction of the opera) during the opera forward festival in Amsterdam. I also composed a piece for the carillon of the “Heikese Kerk” (a church) in Tilburg. The composition was named “Philomena”. This piece went into premiere during the celebration of the 50 years anniversary of this carillon. I also composed a piece for a soprano, guitar and cello. This one was titled “Guardian angle’s plea and was inspired by the terrorist attacks in Paris. Next to this I also composed a piece for Soprano, alto and harpsichord. This was a modern kyrie eleison. In September 2016 I was asked by Andreas van Zoelen to compose a piece for his saxophone ensemble. I was also instructed that it would go into premiere in the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam. Next to this project I also participated again in the Composition meets choreography event. This year I composed a piece that was called “False awakening”. This was a 10 minute piece that was composed together with another composer called Loes Reiling. We both composed half of the piece and met in the middle. On the 11th of January of 2017 my new composition titled “Ashes to Ashes” made its premiere at the Royal Concertgebouw of Amsterdam.

In February 2017 I participated again in an after talk during the Opera forward festival of Amsterdam. From March till May I worked closely with choreographer Sarah Prescimone on a composition for her Bachelor final exam. This piece was called “Ospiti” and it went into premiere on the 31th of May 2017. It was well received and it had a few follow up performances during the summer vacation up until the end of October. Next to these two projects, I was also asked to compose a piece for the saxophonist Kinga Szilágyi. It was for her final exam for her Master of music degree and it went in premiere in the Concert hall of Tilburg on the 26th of June in 2017. I also composed 2 other pieces on the side, one for a flute quartet and another for two singers and an organ. But these last two haven’t been performed yet. In the summer vacation I traveled to Aruba and I attended the “Aruba symphony festival”. I met oboe-ist Courtney Miller from Iowa there and I am currently composing a piece for her. I also met Flutist and the director of the national flute orchestra of Venezuela Maria Gabriela Rodriguez at the festival. I have sent her a piece composed for flute quartet and she said she is very interested in the piece and that they will perform it this year. I am currently waiting to hear about the performance. In June (just before I left for the vacation) I was asked to write a piece in the style of “De stijl” for the Anthony kok festival in Tilburg. This piece was performed in the “New Vorst” on October 7 2017. After that I also composed a piece for the event called Fiomarathon. It was an event that took place during the November music festival in s’Hertogenbosch. The piece was performed by “FC Jongebloed” in the “Willem twee concert hall in s’Hertogenbosch on the 9th of November 2017, and in the Cenakel in Tilburg on the 21st of November 2017. I was also asked by Aart strootman to be a part of the James Tenney’s “In a large open space” performance on Sunday. We performed this piece for 30 minutes and it was a very interesting performance.

I met choreographer Hanna-Lina Hutzfeldt during an interdisciplinary speed date in September of 2017. We started working closely together on a performance that was called “Het is waar”. This performance went into premiere on the 22nd of December of 2017 during the night of the arts festival at the Fonty’s academy of music and performing arts. I also participated at the “Dande” festival of this year and I won second place again.

In January of 2018 I composed a piece for solo guitar that was called mother’s home. It was the first composition the series in a project called “Project Ruins”. It is a project that focuses on the ruins of Aruba and the idea is to compose music that matches these old buildings and their history through

the eyes of modern society. Mother’s home was performed by Jaderick Croes on the guitar and it was mixed with an abstract dance that was performed by choreographer/dancer Sarah Prescimone. This piece went into premiere on the 11th of March 2018 in “de Kring” in Roosendaal.

In April 2017 Xavier was asked by the artistic director Anthony Heidweiller to be a part of the Opera Forward Festival in Amsteram. He was asked to compose a mini-opera for this festival. He then worked for almost a year within a creative team to realize this opera. This opera project was different from the other ones of the festivel, because it was allowed to be longer (20 minutes instead of 10 minutes) and it was a “jeugd opera” (an opera for the youth). We were also the only group that started working with a director at the beginning of the writing process. I composed a 20 minute mini-opera together with my composer colleague Loes Reiling under the direction of Elena van Leuven. This opera went into premiere on the 17th of March 2018. On the last performance they were visited by Director Pierre Audi who was interested in this project. His reaction was that it was the most progressive opera that he had yet seen during the whole Festival. We were combining innovative direction techniques with modern music and modern scenery while still using the traditional opera voice. He hopes to see more from us in the future.

Reflection on my education When I started in the first year I was very eager to learn. I had been waiting for this opportunity for a long time and now that I was finally officially in the conservatory I didn´t want to waste any time. After 2 weeks I started feeling like I wasn´t getting enough homework, so I decided to give myself some extra homework by taking the assignments that I received and trying different things with them. When I found out that we were only going to learn counterpoint for a few months and we would only cover the basics, I decided to continue studying counterpoint in my free time with the books that I was recommended and by watching videos on youtube while studying scores from Baroque composers. Because of this urge to learn a lot and the feeling that I didn´t have enough subjects to fulfill my learning desire, I decided to take 6 extra modules in the 3rd year next to the Minor in sound engineering that I was doing. I have quickly realized that I had underestimated how much work and study time it is needed to complete this Minor in sound engineering that I was doing. So I had to drop a few of those modules in order to survive the third year. This was also when I started to learn how to work under pressure and how to deal with stress (which I am still learning today). The fourth year up until now has been very similar to the third year because of the amount of big projects that I was working on. But it is going great so far and I have learned a lot at this school. I am very happy that I have taken on the challenge to follow all of these courses and modules because I always seem to end up using them to my advantage in real world scenarios. After I started following the modules of music directing, I have ended up directing my own compositions in many occasions (for example I helped directing the musicians of our opera team during the Opera Forward Festival rehearsals when our director needed more rehearsal time with the choir) and it has taught me much about articulations and music interpretations and I feel that I am composing better now because of that. The cultural history lessons have broadened my understanding of art and culture and I have used all that I have learned to study the cultural history of my own country. I am still using this as an inspiration for my music compositions. The minor in sound engineering is the most useful course so far (next to my main subject) because I was used to make recordings of my music to share it with my friends and family (who are in another country and cannot attend the concerts) on the internet and now I can do it in higher quality with means that I can start putting the recordings of my music on the online music platforms to start earning money with them. I have also taken advantage of the special building of FHK, meeting with different artists from different art departments. I have collaborated with different choreographers, students from the rock academy, students from artcode and I have learned a lot of things from them while gaining experience in multi- and interdisciplinary projects. In general most of the courses and modules (if not all) that I have done during the 4 years of my study at the FHK has helped me become a better and a more refined composer. And I am confident that the networks that I have built here will help me with future projects in the professional world.

    Future plans (short term)

Final exam I am currently working on my final exam which is an opera. In this opera I will be using the story of how the Natives of Aruba were massacred by the conquistador Alonso de Ojeda and his Spanish fleet. I choose this story because it is one of the most important historical events of Aruba and because we don’t learn a lot about it in our schools on Aruba. So I am using Theater and music as an educational tool for my audience. I am also doing an opera because of the chance to learn to work on a big project. Here I can learn how to manage and organize a group of people, and gain experience with collaborative work.

Opera projects The previously mentioned story of the Natives is just one chapter in a series of opera’s that I plan on making in the upcoming years. There will be a total of three stories that tell the complete history of Aruba from the day that the first Europeans arrived in 1499 to the day when Aruba became an autonomous country in 1986. The second story will be about the colonization of Aruba and about slavery. The third one will be about the fight for independence which resulted in Aruba becoming an autonomous country. I am currently working out the possibility of taking these opera’s on tour in the Netherlands to generate an income from it.

Theater Project I am currently working with a colleague on a theater piece to be performed by her in the “Tinnenpot” theater in Gent. It is still a fresh idea and we will be sitting together to create it in the near future after graduation. She has recently been accepted in one of the music and performance academy in London so I suspect that we will be putting this project on hold for a few years.

Koninklijke Harmonie Orpheus Tilburg I am currently composing a piece for the Koninklijke Harmonie Orpheus of Tilburg. I received this assignment from Hardy Mertens the director and I have been givin’ the chance to conduct it myself during the performance at the end of the school year.

The choreographers I am currently meeting regularly with the choreographers that I have worked with and we are currently discussing how we can start earning an income with the projects that we have made. So I am expecting to be working a lot more in the theaters.

International work I am currently also composing music for different artists around the world including oboe-ist Courtney Miller from Iowa, the National Flute orchestra of Venezuela, “Koninklijke harmonie de Wijngaard” in Belgium, the student clarinet ensemble of the conservatory in Puerto Rico, Dolomiti Saxophone quartet in Italy and a few more. The idea is to get my name out there. I am trying to create an international market for my music through networking with musicians and ensembles. Through this I hope to create interest in my

  • 23 | P a g e

music in the general public and musicians both professional and amateurs. I also want to gain the interests of the music schools in order to sell my sheet music and performance books with them.

Composition competitions I plan on entering these competitions both for exposure and for the chance to win the prize. Since a lot of important people attend these competitions it is a great place to let your name and music be heard.

Master’s degree I would like to do a masters in the near future but since I will have no more income (from studie financiering) in august it will be difficult to start a masters during the next school year. My current plan is to start working and generate enough income so that I can come back in a year or two to do the masters.

Foundation I am also thinking about the possibly of starting a musician foundation that is dedicated towards performing my compositions on a regular basis. It will be a foundation where musicians can register for and I would book them in different venues so that they have regular performances for an income while constantly be performing new music. If it grows then in a few years I could theoretically have enough musicians to start an orchestra of my choosing, meaning I could choose to compose for a traditional orchestra but I could also costume make my own un-orthodox orchestra which I find more interesting. But I will have to see how things will work out in the future.

The next two years I am working hard for the previously mentioned projects and I suspect that I will have to do some work on the side to stay financially stable for the time being but I am very ambitiously trying to become a full time artist within two years. I am also trying to establish good connections with international artists in order to have them perform my music in their own countries. The plan is to go visit them in their countries and attend their performances and get to know their audience and let their audience get to know me. This way I could build up a network that will allow me to go back to that country to present a new composition to them. I am currently doing this with Aruba and the Netherlands, and I already have plans for the upcoming year for Belgium and Hamburg. I also have a professor in Puerto Rico that is looking forward to my visit to his country and his conservatory. I also have a saxophone quartet in Italy who is waiting for my new composition for them, and they would like it if I could be there for the premiere. I would say that I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Vision into the long term future My current vision is that in 10 years I will be living from my work. I will have made enough connections in the world to be able to travel to different countries to work with the ensembles that will perform my music. I will also be giving lectures and workshops over my composition work to different music schools around the world. I also believe that I would have composed music for at least one Hollywood movie by then. I will also have sold different music books to different music schools and through that I would have more videos online of students performing my music. I also would have had most of my opera projects performed at least once and I would have some

choreography collaborations that are being performed regularly.

I hope to share my mixed culture music with the rest of the world, bringing a different (the Aruban)

atmosphere in the concert halls as well as theaters while educating my own fellow islanders (and the

rest of the world) about our history and current culture.

Impressions of my work Most of my works are available on my website:

www.xg-music.com This website is dedicated to promoting me as a composer in different fields. It started out as just film music but the website has branched out to include classical music and theater works too, just as I have progressed and branched out into different fields of music composition. There are a few tabs on my website, and each tab leads to a page with a few demo video’s with the music that I have composed. The tabs are:

    - Classical music - Film music - Dance projects - Opera

This website only shows the selected few video’s that I deem proper for the marketing purpose, but I also make more videos of many other (often very different) projects. These are usually my experiments with the mixing of the Aruban folklore music with classical and modern composition techniques. These videos can be found on my other youtube page. Feel free to look around and check them out:
