Dinners were held in the Stadhus where we enjoyed the 2015 Nobel banquet menu, created by Sayan Isaksson, a Michelin star chef, and in the Bellman room at Den Gyldene Freden where the Swedish Academy, who select the Nobel literature laureates, meet on a regular basis. Finally, we had Sweden’s iconic meatballs for lunch in Ulla Windbladh. IW&FS OUR FESTIVALS IWFS INTERNATIONAL NEWS JULY 2017 STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN – JULY 7-9 2017 SONOMA, USA – MAY 2-6 2017 In May members tasted their way through some of Sonoma’s top wines, experiencing first hand why the region is no longer the little brother to Napa Valley. This Americas event also set out to match the finest wines with food prepared by the best chefs in Sonoma and the 115 members in attendance enjoyed taking part. Highlights were being poured the wines from the Kosta Browne Winery in five litre bottles; the tasting of wines from the Spire Collection, led by Master Sommelier Sur Lucero; dinner in the gardens of Kendall Jackson Visitor Center at a gigantic table, long enough to provide seating for all attendees and also dinner at historic Buena Vista Winery pairing old world wines of France versus new world wines of Sonoma. To end this wonderful five-day immersion of wine and food Hartford provided wines for the Gala Dinner. 40 members, including 28 from the Baltic cruise, met for a weekend in Stockholm. The weekend combined exploration of the city with food and wine in famous venues. The tours included some history and a tour around the old city, known as Gamla Stan, visits to Nobel Prize venues, a boat trip round parts of the famous archipelago, a visit to the Royal Palace and finally a tasting of Sweden’s national beverage at the Spirit museum. BALTIC CRUISE, EUROPE – JUNE 29 - JULY 7 2017 The exploration of the Baltic Sea, aboard the Silver Whisper, began in Copenhagen and the 38 members, from around the globe, were hosted by no less than four European branches. Members enjoyed authentic Scandinavian cuisine at Restaurant Søllerød Kro in Copenhagen organised by the Malmö branch; past and present Honorary Presidents, Sid Cross and Dave Felton, held an informative wine tasting on board; some 17 members of Helsinki branch welcomed the party for an archipelago cruise and lunch at the Casino Helsinki. Then time to explore the history, beautiful palaces and culture of St Petersburg, culminating with an authentic Russian dinner at Tsentralny Restaurant and the Moscow branch team introduced the local dishes, washed down with vodka, of course. And finally the Tallinn branch members treated all to a wonderful Estonian lunch at Leib Restaurant. Members disembarked in Stockholm – and time for some to enjoy more Baltic delights. Americas – The André Simon Bronze Medal was presented to Michael Donohoe (Houston and Santa Fe) in recognition of his long and dedicated service as a member of the board of directors of IWFS Americas Inc and its predecessor, the Board of Governors of the Americas. The presentation was made by the Chairman of the board on Saturday 6 May in the presence of 120 members at the Gala Dinner in Sonoma.

Europe Africa – It was with great pleasure that Hilton Kuck (Exco member for Africa) was able to present David Swingler of the Cape Town Branch with the André Simon Bronze Medal for many years of tireless service to the branch and region. The presentation was made on May 20, at an elegant branch luncheon held at Glenelly Wine Estate where chef Christof Dehosse prepared a superb meal accompanied by wines from the estate.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR

OUR AWARDS

Sid Cross completed his second term of office, as IWFS Honorary President, at the end of last year, but the first opportunity to catch up with him, to say a personal thank you was in Copenhagen, where Sid, his wife Joan, and Dave Felton, the present Honorary President, and his wife Mitsuko, joined the EAZ Baltic Cruise event.

At the opening dinner organised by Sten Mardell, Malmö Branch President, in Søllerød Kro Restaurant, Copenhagen, we had a symbolic handover as Sid and Dave had known each other for many years, and I

was able to present Sid with a book on Barolo, as a thank you gift from the Society.

Sid has been involved with the Vancouver Branch, and the Society for many years, acting as Branch President, BGA member, Council member, and Wines Committee Member and Chair. Privately Sid has been a wine judge and continues to collect books on wine & food as well as write articles and blogs. Later on the Cruise he led a wine tasting with Dave Felton sharing his wine knowledge with all the members attending.
