Is it just me, or does the Facebook StatusFeed sometimes seem saturated with

platitudes? Life is this, life is that, lifeis grand. Oh, and my favorite, “Life

is a box of chocolates.” What doesthat mean, anyway? Is that just

something Forest Gump said?—a guywho was…uh…oh, no offense…well…

never mind. I’m just asking: Is theresomething deeply profound to this message that I’m notgetting? Sorry, that platitude has never resonated well withme—although I did enjoy the movie, don’t get me wrong! No, I’m not a complete idiot—I get the metaphor, in that younever know what you are going to get in life. However, thatmetaphor also suggests that whatever you get, it is going tobe sweet. Well, I disagree with that message—because, whereas life may be like a box of chocolates for some peopleall of the time, sweet, it certainly is not like that for everyoneany of the time. In fact, a huge percentage of humanity is infamine and disease; myriad others are victims of rape andbrutality; countless women and children have beensmuggled into America as slaves; myriad American citizensare slaves to addiction. The main struggle for mostAmericans is just to survive—to put food on their table, topay their bills, to have a roof over their head, and to staywarm over the winter. People are lucky just to have a job—even if it only pays minimum wage. Americans are notasking for much—just the basic necessities. Nothing sweetabout that, let’s be honest here. Nothing could be furtherfrom the truth than to say that Life is like a box of chocolates. You want a platitude?—How about some ocean frontproperty in Arizona, which can be yours for just $100,000.Anyone buying that too? Didn’t think so.

Seriously, we must worry for citizens who can barely affordan internet connection reading platitudes on Facebookthat life is about this or about that. Because it’s just not thatsimple. Moreover, platitudes are a perpetual reminder ofa corrupt and unjust system. Too many Americans havebeen gypped out of a decent living, and platitudes are abittersweet reminder of empty promises and false hopesfrom a democracy that’s been manipulated todisenfranchise the financially weakest citizens andsabotage even their dreams.

Platitudes purport certainty. However, there is no real certainty inlife. “Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing howto live with insecurity is the only security.”—John Allen Paulos.

One could be on Facebook bombarded by platitudestoday, tomorrow without internet; the next day, withoutelectricity; the next day without a roof over their head. So,the last thing anyone needs on Facebook or anywhere isto be bombarded with never-ending signs saying that lifeis about this, or about that, when in fact, life for most isone hellacious struggle of which one would be extremelylucky to get anything sweet at all. Just saying. Manypeople are defeated. The last thing anyone who isdefeated needs is a platitude—that’s like putting a Band-Aid on a gaping gunshot wound. Not only is it a blatantreminder to the victim that life is slowly seeping out ofhim, it insults his intelligence. People need real help, notBS. No one in their right mind would give someone on firea platitude like “Play with fire and you get burnt.” Nokidding, Sherlock! You got an eye for the obvious!

The best way to be a blessing this Christmas season isthrough actions, not platitudes. "Faith Without Works IsDead"—James 2:14-26 (KJV). If someone needs help, andyou can help, then help them. That’s the beauty of Massena.Massena is a beautiful place to live, even in these tryingtimes of tribulation, where citizens take care of one anotherthrough their hard works and efforts. Continue doingwhatever you can, whenever you can, and as often as youcan to help others in need. You must never stop being therefor one another. You have a far better chance at survivingwhen you work together as a team and help one anotherout, than as an individual looking out solely for number 1.And that’s today’s news in the Massena News: Help thosewho need help today, in that when you need helptomorrow you will get it.

THE MASSENA NEWS (pG. 3) Dec. 23, 2011 FREE CLASSIFIED ADS: 315-842-4448 http://www.TheMassenaNews.com

This January marks the one-year anniversary of theMassena News in print distribution. I take great

pride in announcing mission success! I cameinto this well aware that achieving success was

not going to be easy—but I do love a goodchallenge, tell you what. A lot! In fact, I would

rather go after the bear up in the mountains, riskingmy life to hunt him down, than to simply scrape the

road kill off the street to satisfy my hunger—ishow much I enjoy challenge, which is probably why I’ve lost morebattles than I’ve won (being facetious here, it’s okay to laugh!).

Seriously, there has been a positive change in the collective attitudesand the spirit of the community despite the worsening economicclimate. Increased suicide rates, notwithstanding. Yes, much moreimprovement is urgently required. Nonetheless, I do believe therehas been some overall improvement of which is the basis for thisclaim of Mission Success—unless I am deluding myself! Regardless,it has been YOU who has been in the trenches day in day out fightingthe good fight against ignorance, against passive aggressiveattitudes, against toxic personalities, and against all around negativeenergies, as you have continually led by example and lifted yourfallen, spiritually wounded comrades off the ground—and literallycarried them through the constant attacks. YOU, the reader, are thereal reason behind this perceived mission success. Regardless, it’smy mission, it’s what I perceive, and I don’t care what anyone saysbad about Massena—I believe you are a GREAT people; moreover, awise people, and I believe that your positive energy is impacting apositive change in the community. If I am deluding myself, well then, ignorance (as it would pertain to me) is bliss.

But let’s not be ignorant here! Although the real mission of theMassena News has not been explicitly announced in its missionstatement, there have been many citizens over the past year whohave, as sign of support, made remarks to me like “man on a mission”to let me know that they know what I’m up to. Yes, a wise peopleindeed. Besides, like the saying goes, ‘If you don’t know what you’redoing, don’t worry—in Massena, someone else always does.’

Without you figuring it out on your own, and taking the initiative tobe a positive influence on others in the community, there could beno mission success. Your example of maintaining a positive attitude, enthusiasm, and kindness towards others, despite the continualnegativity surmounting all around you, has helped to keepdefeatism from taking over Massena completely. Without yourstrength and courage, there would have been no mission success, only the continual release of toxic emissions into the air, so to speak.

The New Year presents additional challenges. In 2012, we willcounter the Passive Aggressive winds with an assertive demeanorin order to effect a change over the bad, prevailing winds, whichare spreading the toxic emissions. In 2011, it would have beencounterproductive to attempt this, since such a negative coldfront was what had been establishing the horrendous climate tobegin with, creating an atmosphere that fosters toxic energy, yousee. Now that much of that is dissipating, we can work onbecoming a more assertive culture. This challenge is different, though—and it will require more out of you. Not unlike combatingglobal warming, wherein, we must first begin by reducinggreenhouse gas emissions in order to reverse a climate change, itnonetheless relies on the personal lifestyle changes that you make.So that those around you become, eventually, like YOU, and so onand so forth. In essence, the Massena News is like a liver eliminatingtoxic waste from the body (Massena requires a very strong liver, you know!); and you, the readers, are like probiotics eradicating thetoxins from the body. Massena is the body.

My dear Reader, the change begins with you. Your community needsyou. The world needs you. I believe you will save many souls. You cando it. I know you can. Why? Because you are a force to be reckoned with!

Haven’t you ever wondered why you encounter resistance witheverything you do in life? You may find yourself wondering, Whycan’t anything ever go smoothly and without problems? Why can’tanything be easy? Why do obstacles always appear out of nowhere?Well, here is why: Because you are a force of nature and, as a result,

there is resistance in your life to make you stronger. Are you familiarwith body building? If not, Google “Resistance Exercise ReversesAging”. It is a medical scientific fact that Resistance Exercise reversesaging in the human body and promotes muscle growth. You see,Resistance is key to growth. You need to know that the resistance youhave been experiencing is a sign that life has many great plans andexpectations for you—and you need be thankful that you are beingdeveloped for a very important role in life, even if you have no cluewhat that is. Just hang in there and think like a body builder: No pain,no gain. The Resistance you encounter is a clear sign that you arebeing developed and prepared for a mission. Make no doubt aboutit. Be proud of it! And whenever you hear that inner voice sayingsomething like “Oh I hate my life” or “This is a miserable place to be”you need to respond immediately with “I love my life!” or “This is aGREAT place to be!” Fight back! Otherwise, you certainly will bedefeated—especially if you end up agreeing with the enemy.

An enemy speaks discouragement. A friend, on the other hand, shows you the way, gives you ideas, or helps you develop your ownideas to find the way yourself, and always gives you encouragement. When an enemy is telling you that your life sucks, that you suck, andthat you despise your very existence, well, he is just doing his job—tobreak your morale and your resolve. Don’t take it personal. Anddefinitely DO NOT agree with the enemy. That’s the worse thinganyone can do! For the day that one agrees with one’s enemy is theday that one begins losing his/her life.

As part of my contribution to this mission, I have heretofore donatedover $40,000 of labor that has helped promote small businesses, artists, and local events in the community, in addition to promotingan atmosphere capable of fostering positive energy. This I have done

freely, proudly, and of my own volition. So if/when you hear anyonesaying something like ‘Oh…that seeker dude is so full of himself’ todismiss my efforts, my response to you would be that you know whatI have done. Thus, the question is: What have they done?—other thanto dismiss people trying to make a difference, that is.

I do what I do because I love doing it, and because I love Massena andI love its people. That is the premise of the Massena News. I choose tocreate and disseminate news that is solely for lovers not haters, forwinners not losers. Because….we need more of it. A lot more. Moreover, I have the utmost respect and admiration for every singleperson and group of people that has been on a Front Page of theMassena News. No one has been on the Front Page by chance, orby fluke, but by careful selection and predetermination. Theseare all over-achievers, and all were there for facing incredibleodds and going at it despite personal consequences anddespite whatever negative people might say about theiraspirations. These are all winners.

I have loved, with great passion and intense energy, representing them and their efforts. And Massena shouldlove what they represent.

I love this nation. Patriotism. Courage. Freedom. Liberty.

Massena, you will prevail!—and you will make everyonewho has ever fought in military service to our nationproud of the sacrifices they made when they wentinto battle and lost their life, limb, and/or just a verysignificant part of their soul for our national securityand freedom to persevere and pursue our dreams. You cannot allow yourself to fall into a self-induced bottomless pit of misery solely becausesome toxic individual wants you to join himdown there. No, no!—instead you need to pull

him out! You do that by setting the example. If hedecides to follow your example, he will find the way out. Oncehe gets close enough to you, you can reach your arm in thereand pull him out. So, stand tall! Be strong, be proud, and, most importantly, be there for each other!

Keep the spirit alive.

Time Capsule Games I am always looking for enjoyable activities for mykids. I feel it's important to keep them active andengaged in constructive fun. Since we arerelatively new to the Massena area, I took theadvice of friends and got my daughter involvedin sports, which is what a lot of Massena parentsdo to keep their kids active. But since my son hasautism, team sports are not an option for him.Like many 11-year-olds, he is much moreproficient at playing video games and spends

most of his free time gaming alone. I'd rather get himplaying with other children, which is why I was pleasantly surprisedwhen I saw that Massena has a brand new store for gamers.

Time Capsule Games opened its doors on November 18th on EastOrvis Street right across from Jreck Subs. In addition to being a retailstore that specializes in card games, Time Capsule offers manyactivities for the community youth including game tournaments, karaoke, a DJ (complete with disco ball) with dancing, air hockey, darts, and a place to play video games with others on a 42' flat screen TV.

Owner and operator, James Roshia Jr., wanted to create a "safehaven" for the kids of the community to come and enjoythemselves with others. Originally from St. Lawrence Countyhimself, he saw a lack of places for kids in Massena to go, and feltit was important to give them tools to keep them safe and busy.

"We as a community need to have some accountability for keepingyouth active and entertained doing something positive," says Roshia.

Although Time Capsule Games has customers of all ages, Roshiasays that he will cater toward the needs of the youth in thecommunity. Every Saturday night, Time Capsule hosts a YouthActivity Night from 8pm untill midnight. Youth 17 - 13 can bedropped off by their parents for a night of gaming, karaoke andfun. Kids 12 and under need to be accompanied by an adult.

Roshia has a zero tolerance policy - no theft, contraband, drugs, fighting, weapons or smoking. If anyone is caught breaking policy, they are out. Roshia says it is important for kids and parents tofeel safe. Roshia has been working with young people for years. He hosted game tournaments at the Massena library for the past7 years, as well as tournaments at the Norfolk and Malone libraries. He has judge certification (requiring an extensive backgroundcheck), which allows him to host sanctioned tournaments inPokémon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Konami, NARUTO, and Magic the Gathering. He also worked with the special needs community in Tennessee

before moving back to St. Lawrence County.

"Every person who comes in has a specific thing that they are lookingfor," says Roshia, "and we deal with each customer as an individual. One customer at a time. If we don't have it, we will find it."

Time Capsule Games buys, sells and does trade, so if your kids have videogames they no longer play or have upgraded game systems, it's a greatplace to bring them. They do pre-releases, sanctioned card tournamentsand console tournaments with X-Box 360 Live awarding prizes to thewinners. Every 3 months, there will be an "American Idol" theme karaokecontest, and you can rent time on the game systems (X-Box, PS3 & Wii)for only $5/hour. For parents and adults, there is an Internet Cafe and aconcession stand with munchies and Keurig (K-cup) coffee.

My son wants his next birthday party to be at Time Capsule Games. Hewill be bringing in his own retro systems to do a Super Smash Brothersand Mario Brothers tournament with his friends, while his sisterentertains herself doing karaoke with her friends. Roshia said that theywill accommodate special requests. They host birthday and graduationparties, parent/child days and groups events (reservations arerequired). They also offer a DJ service for other community events.Roshia is especially interested in supporting other local businesses, andeventually working with non-profit agencies in the community.

"The Idea here at Time Capsule," says Roshia, "is without a lifetime customer, there is no Time Capsule." For information on events and parties, call TimeCapsule Games at (315) 705-2220, or visit the store at 268 E. Orvis Street.

In a very intellectually interesting discussion on Facebook Friend April Charleson’s comment box feed, ChrisBurl shared a link from Harvard University, which he had received in his graduate course at the University ofMaryland called Project Teams: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/user/pimh/index.jsp

This link is to a free test for assessing evaluations that may exist outside of conscious awareness or consciouscontrol, to measure the implicit bias, of those tested, with the benefit being that when people are aware of theirbias, they may work on becoming more tolerant. The test is free to the public since it collects the results forresearch purposes. Hence, my wife and I, individually, took several variations of the test, and discovered it to bequite astounding how studies like these illustrate that the mind instinctively clings to similarly related notions, therein forming a bias decision-making process. I imagine that the computer collecting these test results createscharts based on the answers, in which a diagram connects the dots to form the big picture of the data.

Through understanding the decision-making process ofpeople, desired outcomes in business and politics can

be achieved. Computers have been continuallycollecting data to gain understanding on what

motivates the decision-making process of people. You’ve probably heard for years that you’re just a

number, right? Well, every number counts, but it’sprobably not as simple as basic addition and subtraction.

This kind of math involves far greater complexity thantrigonometry, wherein every angle is a factor in the calculation whenconnecting the dots—which is way beyond the scope of this article, to getinto here. Besides, I’m not a mathematician; just a writer with a wildimagination. So, to entertain your thoughts with my imagination, pleaseconsider the following scenario as speculation for your sheer reading pleasure...

Billionaires, Washington DC, Intelligence Communities & PSYOPS(Psychological Operations) connect the dots that diagram the big pictureof how people make decisions. Through assessments of the schematicsfrom that data, computer scientists design applications that automateplans in which groups of people are able to be manipulated respective oftheir fears and prejudices. The next phase is in launching operations tomake malleable the protections contained in the Constitution, as apurportedly necessary response to the changing cultures. All that to fosterthe growth of a desired voter sentiment which can be manipulated by themedia to establish a desired outcome at the polls.

Now imagine mathematical computations being applied by severaldifferent organizations, each with their own agenda utilizing human bias& prejudice to pit people against one another. We Americans are all partof myriad classes and groups of people, with varying and divergingdogmas, customs, religions and other belief systems. Still, it’s all just math, albeit the complexity of this math renders precise answers indicatingwhich angle to apply pressure for a desired effect.

You were ‘just a number’ a long time ago, before the evolution ofcomputers. Computers don’t think in just numbers, but in clusters ofnumbers and polarities, from point x to y to z. Now, if you’re looking atthese charts from a trigonometry standpoint, and you would want tomanipulate the picture, you’d have to polarize the angles. In essence, apply a little pressure to an angle changes the bigger picture (adding alittle, minor polarization to one angle creates a ripple effect on the entirepicture), so to speak. Can you visualize how applying a little pressure toan angle of dogma or religion can affect a change?

You see, my friend, the picture is continually changing, which is whyAmerica’s at a point now, where people oftentimes feel as if society is goingto implode or explode—because we are culturally being stretched this way, that way, every way, continually reshaped. Actually, we’re being stretched inso many ways it’s enough to drive some people nuts. Hence all the outrage, road rage, and gun violence outbreaks happening all over the nation. Weak-minded citizens are unable to deal with all this. They have no idea the forcescontrolling their thoughts and meltdowns, which are all part of the equation.

Interestingly, there are never any motions nor signs of semantics to makemalleable the protections contained in the 1st Amendment (Freedom ofSpeech) nor the 2nd Amendment (The Right To Bear Arms) of theConstitution. Hmmmnnnn…why is that? Guess it’s just a coincidence.Yeah, right. Think again...because you really need to be able to see thesethings for yourself, not just the obvious. Anyone can see the obvious!—well, when their selective attention is not being manipulated, that is. Infact, people are often cheated and manipulated because they’re so fixated

on the obvious, that they can’t see what was really going on right infront of their face!

I recently attended a weeklong business seminar to learn to unleash mycreative potential. In one demonstration, we took a selective attentiontest. This was a very interesting test which proved to us that people haveselective attention. You can take it yourself here:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJG698U2Mvo and then can get more info on it here:http://bigthink.com/ideas/20583

The definition of a fool is not someone who can be outsmarted (orfooled); it's someone who thinks he cannot be outsmarted (or fooled). There are corporations and federal agencies that know people betterthan they know themselves. They are collecting data on everything youdo, to get to know you just a little better. Why? Because if they knowyou, they can control you. It’s always about control, isn’t it? So the nexttime you need to make a decision, wonder if there is something you’renot looking at, not considering in your decision-making process, beforedeciding--especially if it involves deciding on which political candidateto stand behind.

Has American democracy already been hijacked? I don’t know. But I amcertain that there are many who are intent on getting it under theircontrol. History always repeats itself, and as long as there’s a will, there’salways a way—just gotta figure it out. Throughout human history, evilpeople who’ve craved wealth & power over nations and empires, havemanaged to figure out how to achieve it, by outwitting and outsmartingeveryone into situations where they are deprived, and then pitting themall against one another, so that the very orchestrator of all this mayhemmay rise with solutions to all their problems.

The Massena News is Very Honored byComments made by Lauren Sommerfield at ourFacebook page: Facebook.com/MassenaNews

I am a self-proclaimed "news nerd". My friends joke with me quite oftenabout how often I am either watching it on TV or seeking out local newson-line. I like to stay informed. I am originally from Massena but, left forabout 10 years and did quite a bit of national travelling. I moved back andam now raising my family here. I feel it's important to know what's goingon in the world around me. My point in writing this is that I recently pickedup a copy of your paper for the first time after my Dad recommended Itake a look at it. The article that I found most interesting to me was "ThePower You Choose to Exude". While I was away from the area for 10 years, others could certainly have called me a "defeatist", especially in referringto my hometown of Massena. I have to admit, I didn't return here becauseI necessarily wanted to. Life circumstances brought me back to a place Ithought very negatively and was less than thrilled to be "back in Massena".A lot has changed in the 5 years since my return. I have been clean andsober for almost 4 years and look at life MUCH differently. And guesswhat? Massena is actually a pretty amazing place if you are looking in theright places. People always claim that there is nothing to do here. I feelthat I can easily find things to keep my children entertained and involvedif I just put forth some effort to find it. And even myself. I am in avolleyball league, started a book club, active in PTO and even recentlystarted my own business Helpmate Errand Services. The bottom line isthat I 100% agree with your article. Massena is what you make it. WhenI was in a bad place and full of negativity, I found Massena to be a horriblyboring place. Now that I choose to see life differently, Massena haveprovided my husband and I a wonderful place to raise our family. I tryand involve myself into something new all the time. So congratulations ona great little paper. You've got a reader in me. =)

on the global network, so that the images may melt intheir minds to stimulate their ravenousness appetites withenvy. (heh heh…oh yeah, family can be bad that way!)Achieving success in the restaurant industry is extremelydiRcult. We all know that, right? Most restaurants fail—that’sa cold, hard fact. According to Cornell University, and theNational Restaurant Association, 60% of restaurants fail withinthe Srst 3 years of operation; after 5 years that numberincreases to as high as 75%. Goodness gracious, those aretough odds. Yet, T & T’s Famiglia has grown stronger in its 2ndyear of operation. Last year, T & T’s Famiglia was voted one ofthe ‘Best New Restaurants’ in the North Country by Watertown.T & T’s Famiglia has achieved success despite what odds wouldotherwise suggest. This is a great local success story about adeeply-rooted local family and a young rambunctious manwho had left Massena back in 1983 to explore the world, andreturned a responsible, successful man to help out mom anddad. It is with great pride & honor that I met with Sam Portoleseabout T & T’s Famiglia Restaurant, and its growing success.

One of my favorite family dining places in town is T & T’s FamigliaRestaurant located in the heart of Massena at 20 Water Streetoverlooking the Grasse River, owned by Tom Portolese and ToddTrippany. Now this is a restaurant one enjoys taking his wife and childrento! Famiglia is the Italian word for family, and that’s the operative wordhere—where you get a nice range of food & drink to select (they have afull liquor license), while enjoying the love & company of your family. It’sabout family here, because that’s important. Famiglia is important. Theconviviality of family over a meal is important to growth and unity. Infact, conviviality over meals was a social ritual of public and domestic lifeback in the Roman empire where people took great pleasure in bondingover food & drink. Much has been derived from Roman culture andweaved into the fabric of western civilization personality.T & T’s Famiglia Restaurant is gorgeous. The ambience, setting, andservice envelopes a largesse dining experience creating a completefamily-sized indulgence. The restaurant has a very welcomingatmosphere, and the wait staQ is very friendly, lovely. Service is quickand there are lots of options to choose from on the menu. The food isabsolutely delicious, and the portions are larger than prices wouldsuggest. This is the kind of restaurant where I take my Smartphone outto take snapshots of our meals and proudly share with friends & family

Today, my 18 year oldniece's facebook statusread "♥ broke my phoneagain -_- # 7 in less thana year, God just does notwant me to have the htcevo, fine God ill settlefor the iphone 4s ;)". AsI read it, it hit me! Wereally did create a

generation of wastefull, careless, totallyoblivious individuals.

I grew up being taught the value of a dollar. My parents did have money, but my father, coming from a poor hard working, partlyItalian family, was very cautious with it. Hepiled it. Every penny was wisely spent andnot a dime was wasted.

My mother was the complete opposite. Shetoo, had come from a poor family, but she hada different reaction when put in front of someof her own: she wanted to enjoy it. And shewanted to give me all she didn't have. Thiscreated a very tense situation everyChristmas as my mom wanted to buy, buy,buy and my dad wanted to limit, limit, limit.Christmas to my mom was about giving andto my dad, it was about damage control.

I am my father's daughter and everyChristmas, the issue of money gets inbetween my husband and I. He is like my

mother. He wants to give all he canto the kids, no matter what the priceis. I want to be more, shall we say, conservative, especially when I seethings like my what my niece postedon her facebook status today. Overthe years, my husband and I havewasted thousands of dollars intrying to make the kids happy. Andthe fact of the matter is: materialthings do not make them happy.

I know, it's cliché, but kids today do not payattention to their things. They do not care fortheir toys. They grew up in a world who tellsthem that everything is replaceable and that ifit brakes, they will just get another one. Andparents are partly the cause of this. If theybrake their game boy, we buy them anotherone. If they brake their cell phone, we replaceit. We do it because we do not want them tobe singled out at school and not to have whatevery single one of their friends have. But Ithink we also do it to make up for all the timewe do not spend with them.

Parents spoil their kids. I see it all around. It'snot just my family. Every Christmas, the creditcard companies make a killing. A lot of us getinto debt to buy our kids toys that end upbroken or discarded. And I'm not talking smallfive dollar gifts here. I'm talking big money. This is not only teaching them the wrongvalues, but also setting them up for failure.

We have to think about what's going to happenwhen they are out on their own and can't affordwhat they set their eyes on. Do we really wantthem to start their adult life with thousands ofdollars in debt because we taught them that theyneed to have everything they want, the momentthey want it?

I’m no expert, but here’s what I think. We needto teach them that they will not get an iphone 4if they break their HTC phone. And we need todo it after one time, not 7. We also need to givethem what they really want: our time. How toyou spell LOVE to a child? Like this: T-I-M-E.
