Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

Located in the southwest corner of North Carolina two hours from Charlotte, Transylvania County sweeps you away into a world of cascading wonder.

Known as the Land of Waterfalls, this destination is a perfect place to explore more than 250 waterfalls, the Pisgah National Forest, and the endless beauty of the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains. Some of our waterfalls have starred in Hollywood movies. Others offer more secluded spots to reflect and re-energize during a memorable hike. www.visitwaterfalls.com

Slide Down Nature’s Perfect Waterslide

With a 60-foot trip down a natural rock waterslide to reach the seven-foot deep pool at the bottom, Sliding Rock isn’t your average swimming hole. From Memo-

rial Day to Labor Day, visitors can enjoy the thrill of being whisked down the slide by 11,000 gallons of mountain stream water under the watchful eye of Forest Service lifeguards. Watching can be nearly as much fun as sliding, and you never know who you’ll spot from the two observation platforms – during the summer of 2014, Hollywood star Owen Wilson was seen sliding during a break from filming Loomis Fargo in the Asheville area. Located in Pisgah National Forest just north of Brevard, Sliding Rock is just one of 250 cascades waiting to be explored in Transylvania County.

Banjos And Beer

Last year ’s Banjopalooza “Tradit ions” concert was a sell-out, and we’re expecting a great crowd again this year. Plan to be part

of the fun on Saturday, August 22, at Highland Brewery in Asheville.

This is the time of year when Highland creates its famous Clawhammer Oktoberfest seasonal beer, so what better time and place to celebrate the banjo than with their newly released “Clawhammer” brew? (In case you don’t know, Clawhammer is a percussive banjo playing style common to old-time music.)

National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellow Sheila Kay Adams, and master musicians Eric Ellis and David Johnson promise a lively performance. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $17 and can be purchased in advance here, or at Highland Brewing Company the night of the concert, if space is available.

The Blue Ridge Music Trails of NC “Traditions”

concerts are part musical performance, part storytelling. They not only showcase

some of the top talent in our region, but also include time for the

musicians to share their stories and experiences

with the audience.
