Glorious Gentle Giants!Gather family and friends to meet

up and experience the gentle giants of Carolina BalloonFest at the 41st annual weekend festival set against the panoramic autumn skies in Statesville, NC.

Plan to attend Carolina BalloonFest October 17-19, 2014 at Statesville Regional Airport for all the fun!

Over 50 magnificent hot air balloons, sanctioned competitions, Saturday evening balloon glow and a Sunday morning 5k & kids fun run.

Enjoy the hot air balloon flights & tethered balloon rides along with music, food, N.C. wines & craft beer tasting and a kids zone.

Why do flights take place only in the morning and the late afternoon? Balloons need stable winds to operate effectively and the hours just following sunrise and approximately 2 hours before sunset are the best for finding these winds. Since balloons move with the air, the weather is very important

in deciding whether or not to fly. Pilots choose a launch site to use the wind currents to fly towards a suitable landing site. A balloon flies better in cooler weather, as the hot air gets a better ‘lift’.

Guests are encouraged to use free Satellite Parking Services and arrive by 2pm to ensure on-time entry for launch times. Visit CarolinaBalloonFest.com for event information and discounted advance ticket purchases. National Balloon Rally Charities dba Carolina BalloonFest is incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. A portion of proceeds raised is distributed to local charities, such as American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Statesville.

SHOP OF THE MONTH

Just as the name implies, Our Dream Auto Restorations in

Mooresville, NC was the com-bined dream of owner Jeff Arnold and shop manager Dave Cham-berlain. For years, Jeff and Dave had collaborated on multiple winning classic Mopar muscle cars. As Jeff’s collection of clas-sic and exotic cars grew beyond just muscle cars, they needed a larger facil-ity to showcase the unique collection. At the same time, word spread among car collec-tors about the quality of work being done by the team Dave had assembled. Locating a large enough facility for all the services the all-star staff could offer would prove to be a challenge. Finally, in the spring of 2014, the team moved into a 14,000 square foot facility in the Lakeside Business Park.

Our Dream Auto Restorations is a family owned custom car fabrication, restoration and performance shop dedicated to being unique, reliable and complete in every project they take on (regardless of size). While the team concentrates primarily on American-made classics, muscle cars and sports cars, their skills in paint, body work and suspension apply to all varieties of collector vehicles. Our Dream is a full custom shop, specializing in turn key car builds, custom restoration work, body and rust repair, custom car fabrication, and custom paint jobs. From complete and authentic restorations to simply adding some horsepower and performance to your ride, the Our Dream experts have years of experience to create the car of your dreams.

The new shop offers everything under one roof, providing customers with cutting edge vehicles at the highest levels of quality and performance. The facility includes a complete body and chassis department, suspension and brakes department and large scale paint booth. The owner and staff of Our Dream aren’t afraid to show off their hard work. Customers can stop by the shop to see some of Jeff’s favorite cars under one roof. The shop’s museum area includes classic muscle cars, exotic sports cars, rare classic vehicles and even a hot rod or two.

Currently, Our Dream Auto Restorations has been commissioned to restore the 1950 Studebaker Pickup Truck of racing Hall of Famer Bobby Allison. Representing dozens of the best manufacturers in the hot rod industry, the team will debut this iconic truck at the 2014 SEMA Trade Show in Las Vegas, NV. From concept -to-completion, Dave and his staff are handling every details of the build – from body & chassis work to final paint & trim. Fortunately, the Our Dream staff provides the same attention to detail on every project - regardless of your Hall of Fame status.

Kayak Among The World’s Oldest Bald Cypress TreesThe Black River in eastern North Carolina is one of

the few waterways left that hasn’t been cut by man. Nestled deep in this pristine river is Three Sisters Swamp, home to hundreds of ancient bald cypress trees, many more than 1,000 years old. A tree called Methuselah, or BLK69 by its official name, dates back to at least 364 AD and has been verified to be the oldest tree in eastern America. Scientists believe it isn’t even the oldest tree in Three Sisters, it’s just one of the few that has a solid core that allows for accurate age analysis. The trees here are so old that many are flat-topped from storms and hollow from rot. They have survived because of the undisturbed nature of the river system and the pristine water conditions. The Black River has been designated as Outstanding Resource Waters by the North Carolina Division of Water Quality, and the Nature Conservancy has been protecting important tracts along the Black River since the ancient trees were discovered some two decades ago. The river flows nearly 70 miles through Sampson, Pender and Bladen counties before emptying into the Cape Fear River near Wilmington. The area is remote and water levels provide a challenge for kayakers. Guided t r ips are offered by Watersmyth Kayaking based in Wilmington and also through Sampson County.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to fi nd inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.

Bask In A Coastal SunriseWelcome your day with a scenic start over one of our barrier island beaches. From the Outer Banks to the Brunswick Islands, the view will set the standard for your vacation, whether your day includes fishing, golf or historic sites.

Float Down The Dan RiverMore than 100 miles of refreshing water await you on the Dan River, making it perfect for tubing, kayaking and canoeing. It’s also a good place to fish, or just enjoy the natural surroundings. Go for the day, or make it an overnight at a campground nearby.

Taste Wine From The Yadkin ValleyAn ideal blend of sun and soil make the Yadkin Valley a perfect place to experience wines crafted by vintners who welcome guests as if they’re family.

Enhancing the wine experience are the local cuisine, charming B&Bs, local arts and plenty of outdoor activities.

Pick A Barbecue Team – Eastern Or Western StyleBarbecue fanatics argue passionately over the styles prevalent here – Western (or Lexington) versus Eastern. It’s all about smoking choice cuts of homegrown pork crowned with imaginative sauces, so take your palate on a statewide taste test (and don’t forget the hushpuppies).

Explore One Of 27 Historic SitesVisit one or all of these 27 sites to reimagine our Native American heritage and the first English colony in the New World, traverse battlefields and plantations, learn about North Carolina’s historic figures and famous personalities, pan for gold and much more.

Marvel At One Of 350+ WaterfallsDiscover hundreds of waterfalls around every bend in the North Carolina mountains. In Transylvania County alone, more than 250 falls welcome you to drive by, hike to or walk under them, giving the county its nickname, “The Land of Waterfalls.” There ’s even a 60-foot natura l waterslide known as Sliding Rock.

British Invasion In The Yadkin Valley

The national convention of the Vintage Triumph Registry comes

to the Yadkin Valley this September, giving auto fans a chance to see North America’s largest gathering of Triumph cars in two decades.

Shelton Vineyards and the town of Dobson are hosting the 2014 VTR National Convention over several days, but gearheads and Triumph aficionados should circle Friday, Sept. 12, on their calendars. That’s the day when all cars will be on display at the Shelton Vineyards estate.

“They’ll all be lined up by model,” says Charlotte’s Steve Ward, president of the Triumph Club of the Carolinas. “You’ll really get an appreciation of comparing one versus another, restored models versus driven every day. Some of them are real works of art.”

Ward encourages folks from all walks of life to visit Shelton Vineyards on Sept. 12. The cars will be on display from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and there’s no admission charge to the car show. In addition to the show, there will be food vendors on

property and Shelton Vineyards has an on-site restaurant. Winery tours and tastings will also be available.

True fans of this classic British roadster might even bump into Harris Mann. Mann designed the final line of Triumphs ever produced – the TR7 model in 1977 and ‘78.

“This will be the first time Harris has appeared at a Triumph event in North America,” Ward says. “Also in attendance will be several guys who raced the cars professionally. We will have more Triumph royalty than has ever been together at one place at the same time.”
