Daniel Valjevac has always admired clean and classic

hot rods, so at the young age of 26, he opened Retro Designs in 2010 to build the types of hot rods he would want for himself. With a background in both automotive design and metal fabrication, he established a 6,000 square foot facility in Concord, NC that includes a full paint and body shop, fabrication shop and an assembly/mechanic shop. From full builds to servicing classic rides, the staff of Retro Designs provide experience in chassis, suspension, custom sheet metal, paint and body.

The shop has been featured in multiple hot rod magazines over the past several years, and has won several national awards for hot rod building. The shops signature vehicle, a 1932 Plymouth Coupe, showcases their ability to create a classic design with modern conveniences. Finding weatherstripping for the classicly chopped coupe led to a friendship between Steele Rubber Products and Retro Designs. Once sealed tightly to protect the value of the Plymouth, Daniel showcased the hot rod across the country with Steele.

Currently, they have 15 full restoration projects, including a 1934 Ford Roadster being prepared for this summer’s GoodGuys Nationals and a 1941 International Cab Over to be unveiled at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. If you visit the garage, you’ll also find an awesome 1966 Chevy C10 and a cool retro 1971 K5 Blazer for team members of Hendricks Motorsports. For every project, the Retro Design difference can be seen in the attention to detail – clean lines, subtle body modifications and reliable performance. From traditional hot rods to muscle cars and trucks, the guys at Retro Designs may not have as many gray hairs as other shops, but their passion for classic vehicles is showcased in all of the rides they produce.

Ride & Shine: Elkin’s Monthly Summer Cruise-ins ReturnIt’s time to wax the fenders and polish

the chrome. Cruise Downtown Elkin returns for its third season.

These popular summer cruise-ins at-tract upwards of a thousand vehicles on the fourth Saturday of every month from May through September.

Cruise Downtown Elkin celebrates the town’s cruising heritage by converting Main Street and adjacent streets into a cruiser’s paradise. Car enthusiasts have the option of parking or driving loops in the downtown area.

The events are coordinated by Down-town Elkin Inc. Unique vehicles are brought in for display, businesses offer extended hours, and music is played via a public address system.

“Elkin has a rich history of drivers cruis-ing the main strip downtown and these events honor that,” says Vicki Roberts of Downtown Elkin Inc. “Folks can cruise, ride and reminisce. They can also park on all the streets and walk around and check out other cars.”

Roberts says the vehicles range from vintage Model A Fords to modern muscle cars and trucks, with most everything in between.

Hours for Cruise Elkin are 4:00pm. to 9:00pm the following five Saturdays: May 24, June 28, July 26, Aug. 23 and Sept. 27. There is no charge for admission.

September’s cruise-in is held in conjunction with the Yadkin Valley Pumpkin Festival.

Find the spot where Junior Johnson Brews his MoonshineNASCAR legend Junior Johnson is almost as well known for moonshine

as he is for racing. For years Johnson “ran” his family moonshine in fast cars, which eventually led to a career in racing and NASCAR. Johnson was so skilled at racing that he became an inaugural member of the NASCAR Hall of Fame, which pays tribute to its own moonshine history. Johnson found a legal way to distribute his moonshine when he partnered with Piedmont Distillers, North Carolina’s first legal distillery, which focuses on superior quality spirits made one small batch at a time. Based in the town of Madison in Rockingham County, Piedmont Distillers is a small operation with only a few employees. The moonshine made here is perfectly legal and can be purchased throughout the state. The brew may be legal now, but the family recipe is still hand-crafted from corn and born in a copper still at the distillery. Johnson remains involved in moonshine production but doesn’t have to “run” it in his car anymore. Piedmont Distillers offers Junior Johnson’s Midnight Moon, Midnight Moon aged with fruit (including Apple Pie, Cherry, Strawberry, Blueberry and Cranberry) as well as Catdaddy Spiced Moonshine.

In 1992, Larry Kehoe had a vision to grow European varietals in the moun-tains of Western NC. He was among one of the first vinifera grape growers in North Carolina. From there, a bud-ding vineyard grew to 3.5 acres and 7 varietals; Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petite Ver-dot, Chambourcin, Tourega Nacional.

In 2010, Ed and Jennifer (the owners of Silver Fork) became apprentices of v it iculture (grape growing) and enology (winemaking) under Larry’s mentorship. They planted an additional 1.5 acres of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petite Verdot and 2 new varietals; Malbec and Tempranillo.

In September, construction of the Winery was completed to welcome the first 2012 harvest. The property spans 32 total acres - 5 acres of grape vines, rolling hills, wooded trees and 2 winding creeks.

In April of 2013 the tasting room was completed. The rustic airy elegance of the tasting room melts into the open patio providing ample room indoors or out, for guests to enjoy a bottle with friends or a moment of relaxation.

Walk on the Waldensian SideThe 39th Annual Waldensian

Festival will be held on August 8th and 9th, 2014 in Valdese. Each August, Valdese commemorates the return of the Waldenses from exile in Switzerland to their native valleys in the Cottian Alps of Italy in 1689. This event, known as the Glorious Return, is celebrated all around the world by other Waldensian communities. Now, as with the first Valdese celebration held in 1976, we invite you to enjoy the r ich her itage and magic of the 39th Annual Historic Valdese Waldensian Festival.

The Waldensian Festival kicks off on Friday evening at approximately 5:30pm and promises a great time for everyone. If you love antique and classic cars, stop by Myra’s and check out over 150 beautiful refurbished vehicles or go to the Main Stage area and listen to the sounds of Too Much Sylvia. This group will keep you on your feet dancing all night. For the kids…amusement rides just off the main street with plenty of things for them to enjoy.

Saturday morning events begin at 9am with over 170 craft and food vendors. Walk up and down the main street and find that perfect gift you have been look-ing for or try some of the yummy festival food. The Main Stage will feature The Little Miss and Master Pageant, local musicians such as Mama’s Remedy, Pan Jive Steel Drum Band, Michelle Leigh and this year we will host a Songwrit-ers’ Showcase The showcase provides an opportunity for local song writers to perform their original music. For those that are sports minded…check out the Waldensian Footrace or the Bocce Tournaments.

The outdoor drama “From This Day Forward” will present their final per-formance for the season. The evening will conclude with Jim Quick and Coastline providing the ultimate in dance music.
