Hot to TroutTrout fishing in western North

Carolina right now is HOT, HOT, HOT. And it’s only going to get better as spring prevails and days turn long and sunny through May and early June. Upon arriving in the quaint little town of Morganton, North Carolina where fly fishing guides and crafts-man rod builders and fly tiers John Zimmerman and Taylor Sharp of Upper Creek Angler are located, the would-be fly slinger is within an hour’s drive of thousands of miles of public mountain trout water. “It’s time,” John said. “It’s really time. The best fishing of the year is upon us, and it’ll stay this way through mid to late June until the water warms up enough to make the fish uncomfortable.” But, Taylor, coun-tered, “then we go to Elizabethton and Bristol, Tennessee and fish the Watauga and South Holston Rivers.” “He’s right,” said John, “from late March through November, the fishing located and in out of western North Carolina is almost impossible to beat.”

With over 4,000 miles of public moun-tain trout water in North Carolina and

miles upon miles of private water ac-cess, and a custom designed Hyde drift boat, there’s basically no style of trout fishing in western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee that the UCA boys can’t provide for anglers looking to catch their first fish on a fly rod or looking to perfect their craft.

John and Taylor operate a full-service guide and custom tackle service located in Morganton, North Carolina. Their business, Upper Creek Angler, runs guided excursions throughout the year.

The Defiant way is not bound by barrels or recipes or tradition. The best ingredients, Mother Nature and our intuition, guide the distilling crew.

Only four parts and nothing more, create the Defiant experience – Premium American white oak, toasted to perfection; specially cultured yeast, selected by Ferris; two-row, premium brewer’s barley; and pure water from the aquifer under the distillery. At the core of the evolution are oak spirals. The American white oak spirals used are made from premium cuts of wood. They are more efficient than barrels, and create a much smoother finish.

How long is it aged? Take a sip, and then take a guess.

Enjoy a guided tour and culminate your visit with a sampling of Defiant Whisky; bring a camera to capture photos of the distillery and our breathtaking surroundings.

Drive On The Most Complicated Segmental Bridge Ever BuiltThe Linn Cove Viaduct is a bridge built off the side of a mountain located

near Boone. Skirting the slopes of Grandfather Mountain as you drive along the Linn Cove Viaduct is a breathtaking experience. But the Linn Cove Viaduct was not constructed in such a complicated way to be beautiful, it was designed to protect the fragile environment of Grandfather Mountain, an International Biosphere Reserve. Completed in 1983 at a cost of $10 million, the Linn Cove Viaduct was the last section of the Blue Ridge Parkway to be finished. It was the first bridge in America to be built from the top down to protect the environment. At 4,400 feet above sea level, the S-shaped bridge has 180-foot spans and contains every type of alignment geometry used in highway construction, including reverse curvature. It has won 11 design awards including the Presidential Award for Design Excellence from the National Endowment for the Arts. It is one of the most popular spots along the Blue Ridge Parkway and travelers can stop at the Linn Cove Visitor Center to view a model and learn about the construction techniques used in developing the viaduct.

Project 543 tells the story of unique spots across North Carolina we hope will become some of your favorite places. Why 543? Because that’s the number of miles from Manteo, on the coast, to Murphy, in the mountains, and is traditionally considered to be the width of our state. The entries in this project are in no particular order, and we’ll add to them each week. Check in often to find inspiration for your next trip, or start planning today at VisitNC.com.
