Tayabas High School Memories!
Reminiscences of Tayabas High School student life from Mr. Gregorio Idea of
Sariaya, Quezon from an interview I did on him dated September 25, 2002. He
was born November 1909 and belonged to Class 1931. He remembered some of
his subjects like Algebra, Geometry, Literature, English, Physics and his favorite sub-
ject was History. From his elementary studies, he learned to draw the map of Lu-
zon, the different provinces and they pitted their skills in these. His allowance was
only P5 a week, a rather huge sum accordingly during that time, so he was able
to save money. For only P19.59, he can already buy a coat and pants of white
Amerikana from "de Ilo" type of clothing which was shiny most especially when
ironed. Those were the days when ball room dancing was the norm held at the
tennis court now the grounds wherethe Alumni Building stands. They danced the
Rigodon, Waltz, Tango, and the Fox Trot during Christmas Parties though there
were no Cha-Cha and Boogie Woogie yet. Then they ate Pancit, Ice Cream and
Cake with water as drink. Their female partners came from Barrio Morong, Sariaya
where they all hailed from, They rode the train from their place to Lucena for 10
centavos, and a calesa ride for THS spending another 10 centavos. This was much
more cheaper than riding the LTB for P0.50 centavos. He was also into sports
chiefly baseball when not dancing..***
More truly classic Tayabas High School reminiscences from my 85 year old
"Tatay" Mr. Ernesto O. Dedace Class 1944 . . .
Daleon (Physics) ay sina Mr. Marasigan (4th year class adviser), Mrs. Rosario
Atienza (3rd year English - Literature), Basilisa Manhit (2nd year English), Miss Bue-
naventura (English and a good pianist), Timoshenko Heno (Japanese-Nippongo),
at Diego Manza (Pre Military Training)
Noon daw eh may convo-
May
Hahaha!

Tayabas High School Memories!
An even earlier reminiscence about Tayabas High School from my almost 92
year old paternal aunt, Esther Dedace Alcala Class 1939 - She was the Literary Edi-
tor of The Coconut in 1938-1939. Their Editor In Chief to her recollection was her
Sariayahin classmate and Class Valedictorian (she was the first honorable men-
tion) Joaquin Guttierez, accordingly still residing in the US. Among her other class-
mates still living are Dean Cesar Villariba, Praxides de Castro, Ernesto Rondollo and
Lucenahin dentist Dr. Hernando Gabatin. Their adviser was Mr. Bardos (she forgot
his name), likewise their English 4 teacher. Aside from Miss Paciencia A. Daleon, she
remembers a Mr. Batuon (English), Miss Albano (Math) and Miss Buenaventura as
her teachers.
One of her memorable articles was "Thanks To The Bed Bug", the story about
how her then fiancé and later husband Atty. Francisco Alcala passed the Bar Ex-
ams after graduating from the Philippine Law School of the National University in
1931. According to the story, he fell asleep while doing his review and he was
awakened by the bite from a bed bug. He resumed his reviews and come the bar
exams, the subject matter he read upon waking up was the one asked, so . . .
"Thanks To The Bed Bug"! When she competed in the 1939 NSSPC (she's not sure if
this was the name of the competitions) in Pampanga, she and her chaperone, her
mother rode an ET Bus for Manila and then transferred by train to Pampanga. She
did not win a prize but she remembered interviewing the Pampanga Governor
and wrote an article which was her contest piece.
patid na si Domingo (Class of Automatic Graduates because of the Japanese in-
vasion)***

Tayabas High School Memories!
The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor
Naval base in Hawaii on December 7, 1941,
a Sunday. As such, how was it when the
winds of war blew into town?
According to Tatay, Ernesto Dedace (Class
1944), they heard the news from radio sta-
tions like KZRH... and KZRM broadcasting
from Manila in the early hours of Monday,
December 8th. As such, they were not al-
lowed to go to class at the nearby Tayabas
High School anymore, accordingly, upon the instructions of the school Principal to
their teachers.
He was then in third year while his elder brothers Domingo and Arturo were
both fourth year students. It was a very frightening situation most especially when
later in the day, they heard of the bombings in Manila as well as the American air
and naval bases. Some people were even apprehensive about the idea that the
small Lucena air strip would be bombed as well.
Whatever, Tatay and his family began packing their things at their rented
room of the Lopez Apartment in Iyam to return home to Sariaya, like their fellow
students from other towns. With that, and nearing Christmas time, the whole Taya-
bas High School student populace became automatically promoted to the next
level without completing the rest of their schooling, like his elder brothers and their
classmates who became the automatic high school
graduates of December 1941. Not very long after
that, the bombings of Atimonan by the Japanese
naval force entering Lamon Bay from the Pacific
Ocean, which was clearly heard for miles around
began but by then, they had already retreated to
the foothills of Mount Banahaw at the house of their
maternal relations.

Tayabas High School Memories!
absent. Noong first year siya, SY 1939-1940, nagkameron daw ng "Speak English"
Highers . . .***
More truly classic Tayabas High School reminiscences from my 85 year old

. . . from my 84 year old Tatay, Ernesto O. Dedace Batch 1944 of Sariaya, Qu-
ezon. . .
klase na naka graduate ng 4th year noong World War II, school year 1943 - 1944.
They held classes at the Old Trade Building and their lady batch mates used the
West 1 Elementary School, bale 2 sections lang daw sila. Ang guro nila sa Physics
was none other than Miss Paciencia A. Daleon. He remembered biking and skat-
ing in and around the campus. Also, ang mode of transportation nila mula Iyam
information nina Mr. Alfredo Parungao at Mr. Arturo Dedace Sr. both belonging to
that batch.

Tayabas High School Memories!
More interesting tidbits from Class 1943 - 1944 : My Tatay and his other
Sariayahin classmates used to bike to Iyam during Mondays bringing along their
provisions for a week's stay because they rented for their lodging rather than com-
mute everyday, then they go back home on Fridays.
at pinaikling "Its-Ne-San-Se-Go-Rok-Hits-Hats!"
ayaw mong masampiga o maparusahan pagkatapos.
lasa. Indeed, we are truly so lucky, so pampered and so sheltered unlike our oldies
who truly experienced the ravages and hardships of World War lI. We should give
them honor and appreciation for everything. Kundi dahil sa kanila eh ewala
tayong lahat sa ating kinalalagyan ngayon! As for me, the most that I can do is to
share these one-of-a-kind reminiscences with everyone.

Tayabas High School Memories!
gerilya..***
Ang klase nina Tatay, Ernesto Dedace, Class 1943-1944 had the distinction of
being the only graduates during the war. Ang mga classmates niya eh mga tatay-
tatay ng mga ka generation natin- Atty. Cesar Cabral (Girlie is my classmate),
Engr. Glicerio Canela (Dra. Delta's father), Mr. Milberto Zurbano (Dra. Ofie is my
classmate also), and others.
West I ang pasok.
at Shake Your Booty and Boogie Shoes naman sa amin! Hahaha!***
Three more old Tayabas High School graduates from Sariaya ... Dr. Joaquin
Guttierez Class 1939 together with Mr. Alfredo Parungao and Mr. Damaso Ca-
dorna, both belonging to the class of automatic graduates - December 8, 1941-
when the Japanese invaded the Philippines.***
Tayabas High School reminiscences of the late Miss Juliana Rama (born Au-
gust 1904) from an interview dated April 14, 2002 : She used to go to Tayabas High
School from Sariaya, riding a calesa every Monday to live in a house near the Lu-
cena ...Municipio now a bank. In school year 1922 - 1923 as a second year high
school student, she had an American teacher, Mr. James Paully. She did not finish
high school because due to lack of teachers, she was hired by the Superintendent
in 1923 as an elementary school teacher, thereafter studying "Methods of teach-
ing" every summer either in Manila or in Baguio in 1928.

High School Trivia!
Let's remember anything about Quezon High . . . . .
Monday Morning Program bawa't section ...first at second year sa Alumni Build-
ing at third and fourth year sa makaakyat ng Main Building, tapos may kaunt-
ing exercise na folk dance ang tugtog. Noong una sa Quezon high, ano ang
naaalala ninyo?***
Nung closing ceremonies, kami
mga third year eh nag perform ng isang Arnis-inspired number. Naka white T

I feel at home here! Asan

pool ng isang school year 1973-74! Also, we were the last batch to do garden-
ing near the small wooden grandstand at ang mga teachers noon eh dalawa,
sina Mr. Emmanuel Cena at Mr. Fernando Habito. Malamang, mas senior ang
teachers ninyo noon.***
So may dalawa palang tennis courts noon!
wak ng pinagsasayawan daw nila ng Fox Trot, Waltz, Tango and the like!

man eh pantalong may tirintas sa paligid! Yung iba kong classmates at
Hahaha!
mo'y matangkad! Maabilidad ano? O di baga?

High School Trivia!
Yun pong mga sinusundang batch namin from 1976, 1975, at earlier
man ang Evening Classes, first and second year . . . kaya batch '79 ang
unang graduates nila. Tama po baga***
Kami nung 1977 eh 21 sections lang. May mga sections na exclusive
pambabae at pang lalaki! Awan nga baga at nagka gay-on? Anyway,
Ang iba pang sections in that order eh
BA (Mrs. Belen Agapay),
RA (Mr. Romeo Alcala),
LMB (Miss Leticia M. Buzar),
TD (Mrs. Teresita Dimayuga),
ZJ (Mrs. Zenaida Joyas),
JPM (Miss Juanita P. Manalo),
BM (Mrs.Belen Manila-all girls),
EM (Mrs. Elvira Mitra- my section),
APP (Mrs. Adelita P. Paglinawan),
TP (Mrs. Teresita Parafina),
ZP (Mrs. Zayda Pobeda),
MR (Mr. Marcelo Rama),
RR (Mr. Redentor Resuma),
MHR (Mrs. Milagros H. Rosales),
FT (Miss Fidelia Tinamisan - all boys),
LV (Mrs. Luzviminda Verayin - all boys),
MV (Miss Miriam Verora-dating TAA, naging LRB, naging JV pa!
Palit- palit ng advisers),
GV (Mrs. Gilda Villabona-Arnis Section), at
RRV (Miss Remedios R. Villanueva).

(Taaan...tan-tan-tan-tan-tan -tan-tan... tan ...
talagang pinalakpakan with standing ovation and band playing! Nakaka
We
were in second year .***
batch '74. After that until maka graduate kami eh wala na pero may sumu-
nod yata after noon, mga younger batch!***

High School Trivia!
A declamation piece care of Miss Normita Atienza when we were freshmen
(1973-1974)
I have eaten!
I have eaten too much!
I have eaten because others did!
Because I was in the world, and the world could not have understood!
And each mouthful, each swallow was hard to get down!
I have eaten much Lord!
While at that very moment, in Azcarraga and Tutuban,
beggars in rags begged for ten cents or a bowl of rice!
While in her barong-barong,
an old woman ate what she had just salvaged from the garbage can!
While bone thin boys,
fought for bits of lumpia and pancit left over from a restaurant plate!
While ten, a hundred, a thousand unfortunates throughout the world,
at this very moment twisted in pain and died of hunger before their
despairing families!
Lord I have eaten!
Lord I can't sleep!
I have gotten out of bed, to pray...

High School Trivia!
"The Despair Of Judas" delivered by I-AC and I-NA classes of
Miss Normita Atienza for the King's Language Triangle "Kawayan
Awards" of 1974 at the Old QPHS Gym:
They have condemned him to die!
And I, I drove that shameful bargain! I am a traitor!
I sold him! Ah, I have sinned!
Have I not chosen you twelve and one of you is a devil? Devil...?
What have I to do with thee Jesus thou son of God?
What has Judas to do with Jesus? Traitor!
Not endless years in hell, will pay the crime of murdering the son of
God!
Where? Where can I hide my head?
No, I will not live! I also shall die! Ahhh, that kiss!
It sears my lips! It scorches my very soul!
Ah Judas, what have you done?
Why did you allow the greed for money to take possession of your
soul?
Ah, how can I bear it?
Why did not the mountains fall on me?
Why did not the earth gape and swallow me up?
Why did not the sea overwhelm me?
Friend? Friend? Hahahahaha! The world will know Judas the friend!
The world will point to Judas, as the by word and pledge of broken
faith!
What hope for thee Judas?
Not in the grave for earth will spurn your very corpse!
Not in hell for he called you devil!
And the devils cried out, torment us not Jesus!
Judas faithless friend! Devil!
One for whom it would be better not to have been born!
Judas, there is no hope for thee!
No hope! No hope! No hope!" ...***
