his issue of in touch kicks off our 2013-2014 school year. We are excited to announce that enrollment is at 95% capacity or 340 students, pre-school through grade eight. This is the highest enrollment in over twenty-five years. Nearly all classes are full, and we have welcomed many new 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation students.

Since the Annual Report In Touch issue last spring, many changes have occurred. Our book-keeper for the last ten years, Dale Sugarman, retired; 7th grade teacher, Tori Humphrey, and Transitional Kindergarten teacher, Jen Parsons, left at the end of the school year to be full-time mothers; and our long time aide, Youth Ministry Leader and alum, Megan Claire ’03, moved on to get her masters and teaching credential.

Facility upgrades, which include new windows in 2nd grade, painting in classrooms and hallways, installation of cabinetry in some classrooms, and re-organizing of learning spaces, has made for a wonderful start. In the technology arena, all classrooms have been installed with Apple TVs, the teachers received new Mac computers, and our inventory of tablets, laptops, Chromebooks and desktops now stands at over 185 devices for children and teachers to use on a daily basis. Generous ongoing donations to the technology have helped the school to stay current in this important educational arena.

Join me in welcoming new hires Bridgette Owen, Traditional Kindergarten; Kalei Ching, 7th grade homeroom, 8th grade social studies, 6th grade English; Jade Rey ’05, teacher’s aide; and Jessica DeLeuw, Rhythm and Moves, P.E. instructor. We are blessed to have these educators in our school community. In addition, Mrs. Beth Keelan began in the business office in August and oversees tuition collection and all the accounting needs of the school and extended care program.

In May, the Class 0f 2013 received the Sacrament of Confirmation and enjoyed a wonderful graduation ceremony. Many students have moved on to Catholic high schools, including Junipero Serra, Notre Dame Belmont, Sacred Heart Preparatory, St. Francis and St. Vincent, Petaluma. We are so proud of our graduates!

We pray you had a blessed and refreshing summer, and we look forward to an exciting and productive school year. We invite you to send us news to include in future issues of In Touch, attend school events, including the auction on October 26, 2013, and visit the school.

Alumni News

Alumni Spotlight: Dennis Lucey ’54, Honors Ireland’s Prime MinisterDennis Lucey, Class of 1954, co-chaired the American Ireland Gala held on March 18, 2013 in Washington, D.C. The dinner honored Ireland’s Prime Minister, Enda Kenny. The Gala raises funds for programs of peace and reconciliation, arts and culture and education, and community development in Ireland.

Dennis Lucey graduated from Serra High School in 1958 and attended St. Joseph’s Seminary from 1958-1960, but decided that the priesthood was not his calling and entered the University of San Francisco, graduating in 1963. His career took him to Washington, D.C. where he has worked in the computer business at Burroughs Corporation and later, Xerox Corporation. He also earned an MBA and went on two sabbaticals while at Xerox. The first was serving as the Chief Administrator of the hospital ship HOPE during its year-long voyage to the northeast of Brazil in 1973. The second was serving as the Director of the Peace Corps in Liberia West Africa in 1976 and 1977. He later worked for Storage Technology until 1997 and then Sybase Corporation until 1999. He was involved with a number of start-ups from 1999-2004. Since 2005, he has been Vice President of Sales for TKC Global, offering computer services to the Federal Government.

Dennis continues to demonstrate his commitment to service by volunteering for a wide variety of non-profit organizations, including the American-Ireland Gala, which provides funds for education, health care and other social works for Ireland; the Jesuit Volunteer Corps; the Ignatian Volunteer Corps; All Hollows Seminary in Dublin; SOME (So Others Might Eat), a homeless shelter in Washington, D.C.; University of San Francisco Alumni Board; the Knights of Malta; Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.; Georgetown Visitation (the oldest Catholic girls high school in the original 13 colonies); Catholic Charities in Washington, DC; the National Peace Corps Association; Woodstock Theological Center; and the Georgetown Center for Liturgy. He was also the National President for SOAR—Support Our Aging Religious—which raises funds for our retired nuns and priests.

Dennis has been married to Pam since 1976, has two children and two grandchildren and lives in McLean, VA. He would love to hear from anyone from Mount Carmel that gets to the Washington, D.C. area. You may contact him at [email protected]. Thank you, Dennis, for all that you do in your community.

Alumni Spotlight: Paula Uccelli ’56: Our School’s Mission in ActionThe mission of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is to develop students with creative minds, a sense of purpose, compassion for others and the courage to act on their Catholic beliefs.

Paula Uccelli, Class of 1956, has been a fixture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and Parish for over 60 years. As one of the founders of the Sequoia Awards, a Redwood City organization that gives scholarships to high school seniors who give back to their communities; an active community member and parishioner; and a supporter of a multitude of Redwood City organizations, including our school, Paula exemplifies Our Lady of Mount Carmel’s mission.

Paula is also a generous donor and co-founder, along with Ted Hannig, of the Hannig Cup, a fundraising effort now in its eighth year that supports a variety of charities. Ted Hannig also runs the Danford Foundation, a generous sponsor of both our new school play structure and the new audio system installed in the church to assist the hearing-impaired. The Hannig

Cup has contributed over $1,000,000 for local charities serving youth, including the Sequoia Yacht Club youth program, Sea Scouts, the Marine Science Institute, the Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation. This year, the Hannig Cup is also supporting the Floating Doctors, a non-profit medical relief team of doctors, nurses, dentists, optometrists, other professionals and experienced sailors and boating professionals dedicated to reducing the burden of disease in developing communities and promoting improvements in health care delivery worldwide. They have their own ship, the Southern Wind, which they use to deliver aid, medical support, and relief supplies to remote locations in the Caribbean and Central America. At this year’s event on August 28, in addition to supporting youth charities, Paula and Ted Hannig presented a check to the Floating Doctors for $829,500 to fund a clinic in Panama.

Paula and her late husband Pete Uccelli, operated Pete’s Harbor, a popular Redwood City destination for over 60 years, which closed recently to prepare for its next chapter. She continues to support her late husband’s vision with the developer that Pete hand-selected, the Pauls Corporation, to build 411 homes in a beautiful waterfront community with a harbor, public access to waterfront trails, a hand-rowed boat and kayak launch, boat slips open to the public and a picnic area. She is hoping the project will be approved soon.

Thank you, Paula, for all you have done for our school, our parish and the community.

In MemoriamMichael Ferrando ’60We were saddened to learn of the passing of Michael Ferrando, Class of 1960. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

Congressman Bill Royer ’34On April 11, 2013, Our Lady of Mount Carmel graduate, William Howard Royer, Class of 1934, passed away just days before his 93rd birthday. Bill graduated from Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, then from Sequoia High School and Santa Clara University and did graduate work at Oklahoma State University. During his time at Santa Clara University, he played baseball against Jackie Robinson, coached youth sports, and golfed with

Willie Mays. Royer is a member of the Sequoia High School Sports Hall of Fame for his basketball and baseball skills and was inducted into the San Mateo County Sports Hall of Fame in June 2013. He served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945 and worked as a realtor before entering politics. He served on Redwood City Council from 1950 to 1966, including a term as mayor from 1956 to 1960. In 1972, Bill was elected to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. In 1979, Bill won a special election to succeed the late congressman Leo J. Ryan (D-San Mateo), whose life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated in the Jonestown Massacre in 1978. Royer was married to his wife Shirley for 69 years and had two sons and grandchildren, two of whom, Shawn, Class of 2021, and Kayla, Class of 2022, are students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel School. His nephew, Jim Hartnett, Class of 1964, also served as mayor of Redwood City.

Father John P. Kavanaugh, Pastor from 1988 to 1997Father John Paul Kavanaugh, retired pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, died June 28 in Daly City. A funeral Mass was celebrated July 8 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Father Kavanaugh was 88 years old and served at Our Lady of Mount Carmel from 1988 to 1997. He was the pastor who hired Principal Teresa Anthony. Remembrances may be made to the

Priests’ Retirement Fund, One Peter Yorke Way, San Francisco 94109. “Father Kavanaugh,” said Teresa Anthony, “loved and valued beyond all else Catholic education and was instrumental in establishment of the school’s Endowment Fund. His dream was to have Catholic education affordable to all.”

Father Paulinus Mangesho Returns to OLMC from Africa in June 2013

Father Paulinus Mangesho, our associate pastor from 2004 to 2011, came to us following his role as pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in San Francisco. Father Paulinus returned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel to visit in June and July 2013. The Sister Parish Committee, organized in response to the United Nations and Catholic Church Initiative, chose Kiraeni, Tanzania to be our Sister Parish. This is the parish that Father grew up in and sits near the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. Father is now the director of the St. Francis Vocational Training Center in Bomangombe. The school trains youth in mechanics, tailoring, secretarial and technology skills and driving. He was asked to assist the struggling vocational school he as has extensive previous experience in Tanzania running vocational schools for his Order. He still has close ties to our Sister Parish.

Teachers Witness the Investiture of Archbishop Cordileone in RomeSecond-grade teacher, Janice Scherba, third-grade teacher, Katrina Lyssand, retired eighth-grade teacher, Peggy Clifford and parishioner, Elaine Piparo began their summer by attending the Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone’s Pallium Pilgrimage in Italy. This nine-day pilgrimage in June and July 2013 brought them to Assisi, Orvietto and Rome. The highlight was attending the Pallium Mass said by Pope Francis on the Feast of Saint Peter and Paul on June 29 in the Vatican. The Archbishop received his pallium from the Pope, which symbolizes unity with the Pope and is worn around his shoulders when celebrating liturgy in his region. Mrs. Scherba and Ms. Lyssand look forward to sharing this experience with their students at Mount Carmel School.

We are proud to introduce our newest faculty member, Ms. Kalei Ching, the 7th grade homeroom teacher replacing Ms. Tori Humphrey, who left to be a stay-at-home mom at the end of the 2012-13 school year. Ms. Ching comes to us with a degree from Stanford

beginning with the 2013-2014 school year, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, along with all schools in the Archdiocese, is using the Common Core State

Standards for mathematics. The State of California adopted the Common Core Standards in 2010, and the schools of the Archdiocese have been preparing and training for this implementation since 2012.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort that established a single set of clear educational standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts and mathe-matics that states voluntarily adopt. The standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to enter credit bearing entry courses in two or four-year college programs or enter the workforce. The standards are clear and concise to ensure that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of the

expectations in reading, writing, speaking and listening, language and mathematics in school. Common Core Standards are also being developed for science, world languages, and the arts.

So far, 45 states, including California, the District of Columbia and the territories of Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa Islands have adopted the standards. The Archdiocese has worked to ensure that the math Common Core Standards will be interwoven into the fabric of all Catholic elementary schools. The archdiocesan schools are also renewing an implementation

time line for the Common Core Language Arts Standards.

For more information about the Common Core State Standards and to read the actual standards for each grade level, please visit www.corestandards.org.

Curriculum Changes at Mount Carmel: Common Core State Standards Adopted for 2013-14 School Year

“Our Lady of Mount Carmel School and the Archdiocese of San Francisco has mirrored the California State Standards, modifying them as

needed to continue to provide a strong academic curriculum. Therefore, we decided it was

imperative to adopt the Common Core Standards in order to provide our students with a high

quality education. Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is very excited about this initiative and the consistency it provides educators and students.”

Large Hall Renovation UnderwayAs many alumni, students, families and parishioners know, Cavanaugh Hall, our Large Hall, is in dire need of renovation. As part of the Parish’s effort to modernize and provide our students with state of the art facilities while maintaining the historic character of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish, we encourage you to participate in our Large Hall Renovation Fund. The Parish has launched a $40,000 fundraising campaign for 2013-14. The total project cost is $90,000, and we have received $50,000 in donations so far. Our goal is to create a 21st century facility that our community can be proud of and that will serve us for many decades to come. Upgrades include a sound system, stage lighting, new windows, new scoreboards, painting, window coverings, and floor renovation. These upgrades, with the new stage curtains and wall pads, will maintain the historic integrity of the space

and provide a wonderful place to play, act, sing, dance, meet, gather and socialize.

Every donor will be included on a plaque that will be placed in the renovated hall, and donations can be made in memory of students, alumni, coaches, P.E. teachers, or others. Please contact the Parish Center at 650-366-3802 or Nori Jabba, School Development Consultant at [email protected] or 650-366-6127 if you would like to donate. You may also send a check to OLMC–Large Hall Renovation Fund. Any amount is greatly appreciated, and no donation is too small.

OLMC’s Class of 2013 Receives Sacrament of ConfirmationConfirmation, one of the seven sacraments, is the rite at which a baptized member of the church affirms his or her Catholic beliefs and is admitted as a full adult member of the Catholic church. While recently occurring in 9th or 10th grade, beginning with our most recently graduated class, the Class of 2013, Our Lady of Mount Carmel School now includes the Sacrament of Confirmation as part of the 8th grade religious curriculum. While this year’s confirmation class had over 100 candidates, including 8th graders as well as high school students, future classes will be smaller since most students in the parish will now go through Confirmation in 8th grade. While the candidates will receive religious training as part of the religious curriculum at the school, they are also required to attend Confirmation preparation events outside of school day.

According to Father Ulysses D’Aquilla, “we hope that this change—the offering of the Sacrament of Confirmation to our 8th graders—will mean that they enter high school as fully initiated Catholics ready to assume new challenges and to act on these gifts of the Holy Spirit which this sacrament confers.”

Mount Carmel Receives six-Year Accreditation in 2013Congratulations are in order once

again as Our Lady of Mount Carmel

School received a full, clear six-year

accreditation, the highest given, from

WASC, the Western Association of

Schools and Colleges in March 2013,

since the inception of the accreditation

process. The accreditation process

involves a year-long series of

interviews, meetings, reviews, visits

and report. Our Five-Year Plan, which

was updated for the accreditation

process, is now used as a model plan

for other schools.

mark lambert (parent to Luci Lambert, Grade 5) has been an active parent volunteer for six years. Mark serves on the School Board, is active in the Mount Carmel Men’s Club, has been a faithful lumpia server at the Festival’s Filipino booth, and has hosted Smokin’

& Jokin’ for the last five years, an auction item that has brought in nearly $15,000 for the school to date. Mark is a partner at Cooley LLP in Palo Alto and practices business litigation. Mark is married to Kelly Ilnicki, and Mark and Kelly are also hosting the 5th grade social this fall.

In Touch: Tell us why you enjoy serving on the school board.

Mark Lambert: There are a lot of reasons. First, I love the Mount Carmel school community. It is the kind of school I wish I had been able to attend when I was in grade school. Since our first days as kindergarten parents, we have become close friends with fellow parents, and we have invested deeply in the social fabric of Mount Carmel. There is a common bond among so many parents in their love for their children that reflects recognition that the school is what we make of it. Making a difference requires time, effort and contribution. This school is great, because so many parents pitch in with their time and generosity. I see that at every school board meeting. When I was asked to serve on the school board, I thought it was a great opportunity to directly contribute to the educational mission of the school and to learn more about the opportunities and challenges we face as a school community. On top of that, I was a high school teacher and coach for about five years after I got out of college and absolutely loved it. Being on the school board has reconnected me with that interest.

IT: The Men’s Club has grown tremendously over the last few

years and does so much for the school and parish. What is

your favorite Men’s Club service activity? ML: My favorite part of Men’s Club is the regular meetings. It is a great group of guys who represent the entire parish.

Friendship and common interest is what drives both the call to service and the response to that call among the Men’s Club members. My favorite Men’s Club activity is the annual selection of the Men’s Club Scholarship recipients. The achievements of our students dignify the highest and best achievements of our school community.

IT: How have you grown in your own faith journey through

volunteering at Mount Carmel?

ML: I was not raised Catholic but started going to church with Kelly after we got married. I learn every day from Kelly and Luci what being a Catholic means and what it looks like. At Mount Carmel, there are so many examples of faith in action, in the form of selfless friendship and a commitment to others and to a whole that is so much greater than the sum of its parts. This inspires me toward faith in Christ and his example.

IT: What is your favorite OLMC event each year besides

Smokin’ & Jokin’?

ML: Festival. I work every year in the Filipino food booth. As a kindergarten parent, the Filipino parents who managed the booth were so welcoming and so much fun. Last year, we were under “new management” due to graduation, and there was new food and a new crew. We had a great time and kept the tradition alive. I think it is a small example of what keeps Mount Carmel great. New families come to the school each year, grow and graduate, and it is up to new families to learn from those ahead of them how to find a way to contribute and make a difference. In that way, cutting lumpia at Festival each year is as important as attending school board meetings and planning Smokin’ & Jokin’.

IT: Best Smokin’ & ‘Jokin’ story?

ML: Let’s just say there is lots of cigar smoking, lots of joking and the rest is privileged information.
