ALBUQUERQUE ? On Mar. 12, the Democratic Party of New Mexico hosted the Pre-Primary Convention, packing Isleta Resort and Casino with party delegates and activists. The showroom was buzzing with excitement as it was filled with Sanders and Clinton supporters, advocating for their candidate. Local supporters gathered as well, showing support for Secretary of State candidate Maggie Toulouse Oliver and Congressional candidates Ben Ray Lujan and Michelle Lujan Grisham. As a first-timer at an event like this, it was very exciting to see very like-minded people come together to support the party as a whole. The energy at the convention was contagious as the Democratic Party Chairwoman, Deborah Haaland, gave her introductory speech. Haaland expressed her gratitude to the delegates and activists for all of their hard work that has benefited the party. However, Haaland?s message was clear: whether you support Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton, our main mission is to get a Democrat in the White House. Additionally, Haaland expressed the need for Democrats in state-level positions as well. Seeing Democrats from various counties around New Mexico was evidence of the importance in our work. With this many supporters, it is vital that we stick together and vote for Democrats across the board. This week we celebrate the sixth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). As Democrats, we believe that affordable health care should be available to all New Mexicans. The ACA is a prime example of how our values benefit families in our state every day.

Since the ACA was signed into law on March 23, 2010, the uninsured rate in New Mexico has dropped by 8.4 percent. In addition, ACA protects New Mexicans with preexisting conditions from being denied coverage and allows young people under the age of 26 to remain on their parents? health plans. And now, more New Mexicans are covered by Medicaid, another program championed by Democrats.

As we mark this milestone, Democrats continue to f ight for the things that matter most to New Mexicans like job creation, access to health care, and education. Let?s keep the ball moving and work to elect candidates that share our ideals.
