The poetry provides a rich palette of musical moods evoked by the sea. In Songs of the Fleet, Charles Villiers Stanford deploys his harmonic inventiveness and folk-like melodies to depict the fleet ‘waking’ at sunrise, ready to set sail, and motionless at dusk.

INSPIRED BY THE GRANDEUR OF THE SEA

American composer Frank Ticheli’s The Shore weaves a commanding score set to David St. John’s poetry in which the sea is a metaphor for life’s journey.
