UE EYES TO EXTEND UAAP REIGN

Fencers ofinterest

By Denison Rey Dalupang

W ITH THE UAAP second semester hostilitiesjust around the corner, one school is eye-ing to reaffirm its mastery of the craft of

swordplay.The University of the East

Lady fencers squad currentlyhas a firm grasp of the wom-en’s fencing crown followingimpeccable showings in thelast five years.

But staying on top isn’t easyin the coming season.

With the exit of last year’sMVP Patricia Melendres, UEpins its hopes on national teammember Elaine Kea Gonzalesand up and coming KerenPangilinan.

‘‘It’s pretty hard to notch thetitle every year. It’s more

mentally tiring than it isphysical,” said Gonzales.

Gonzales and Pangili-nan believe Ateneo is

UE’s main stumbling block thisseason.

‘‘One player from Ateneohas the handworks for doubleweapon—epee and foil. She’squick, agile and has this veryintimidating presence,” saidGonzales.

Pangilinan also noted thecalm demeanor of the Ate-neans.

UE, which is handled byhead coach Amat Canlas andassistants Rufel Endriano andChester Uy, will ride on themomentum of the Lady War-riors’ victories in the Espadaunder-23 and POC-PSC Nation-als early this year.

‘‘We’re ready,’’ said Gonzales.

UST’s Zafra: Sports writing in her mindBy Cam Arcilla

W HEN most people thoughtthat this 5’10” standout canwear a beauty pageant

crown or walk on a runway, Jade Zafra,a lady jin from University of SantoTomas and the national team, can chal-lenge anyone with a sparring and ashin-to-shin.

Jade first learnedtaekwondo at a sportsclinic in Tagaytay, where her friendasked her if she stillwants to go after herchildhood dream. Shewas only 14 by then.

‘‘Sabi ko late nakasi nung 10 [yearsold] pa lang ako gus-to na namin [ngkaibigan ko] mag-taekwondo,” she said.

But after Jade’sparents convinced herto join the trainingfor self-defense pur-poses, she got hookedand continued thesport until she wascompeting for various

competitions.‘‘Pumasok ako sa

UST, red-belter palang ako,” Jade said. However, with herconstant one-on-onetraining with coachDindo Simpao, shewas finally includedin the competing USTteam. In 2009, sheentered the Philippineteam.

‘‘Ako pinaka-matangkad sa division(featherweight)namin,” she said. ‘‘I’monly 57 kilos for myheight, which is anadvantage.”

Aside from taek-wondo, Jade also fo-cuses on her studies. She is currently tak-ing up journalism asher course. Her forte,

of course, is sportswriting.

‘‘Writer.Ayoko ngbroadcaster,or reporter.

‘‘Yung mgahuma-

sa TV,’’ Jade said.Even with the po-

tential in height and

beauty (which was, according to her, tak-en from her family’s

genes), Jade has noplans in joining beau-ty contests or even

show biz. She admit-ted that she will pur-sue taekwondo even

after graduation.When Jade’s not in

training or competing, she takes her time offby staying at home, taking a rest, or focus-ing on her studies.

DEFENSE is the name of thegame for Gumabao.

KEN KOO THE LASALLIAN

Michelle Gumabao is ‘G-Force’By Patrick Leonard Mayo

IT HAS BEEN said that insports, defense wins champi-onships. And in the UAAPwomen’s volleyball wars, thetwo-time defending championDe La Salle Lady Archers em-body that cliché, thanks to asolid defensive anchor in theperson of back-to-back UAAPBest Blocker, Michele Gum-abao.

Dubbed “G-Force” by herfans, the 20-year-old Gumabaogot introduced to volleyballway back her elementary dayswhich served as a solid founda-tion for her continuously-evolv-ing game.

‘‘My two older sisters, Kat-rina and Marielle, used toplay back in high school and I

used to watch them play andtrain for varsity at the School ofthe Holy Spirit in QC and theytaught me the game when I wasstill in grade school,’’said the5’9” utility spiker of the LadyArchers.

‘‘I never really watched vol-leyball on TV and I didn’t haveany specific volleyball idols as Iwas growing up,’’ said Gum-abao, but says she admires thevolleyball teams of the USA andBrazil.

Being the back-to-back titlistsin the UAAP, Michele knowsthat the rest of the league is outto get them and would want tosnatch the championship away, especially the Ateneo Lady Ea-gles, which she considers astheir number one contender thisseason. But she believes that

defending the crown beginswith having the right attitude.

‘‘We are all determined touse our talents and skills and Inever doubted my teammates. We have a good chance of win-ning again this year and we justhave to work together, strength-en our faith, our trust and ourrelationship on and off thecourt.’’

Aside from taking the defen-sive cudgels for the team, shesees herself as someone whobrings extra energy to the team.

‘‘I am very noisy, hyper andintense inside the court. My en-ergy levels are usually high andthat’s my way of boosting ourmorale and confidence.’’

But her passion and disci-pline are not only limited insidethe volleyball court. Being a

student always comes firstand balancing her academicand athletic commitments is amust.

‘‘The key is time manage-ment and knowing your pri-orities. During training, Ithink of nothing but playingvolleyball. At school, I thinkof nothing but academics. Ijust focus on one thing at atime and try to balance every-thing,’’said the 4th year BSMarketing Management ma-jor.

In between school andsports, she allows herself re-laxing moments.

‘‘When we are not practic-ing and we have no classes, Ijust go to the mall and shopor just sleep at home,’’ shesaid.

LOVABLE JHECK DIONELA

Sky is the limitBy Alexx Esponga

D ESPITE her numerous awards, well-lovedJheck Dionela of NCAA champion Universityof Perpetual Help System University remains

hungry for more. The top libero in the high-oc-

tane Shakey’s V-League justcouldn’t get enough.

And this is welcome news forher fans, who never fail to floodher Facebook and Twitter ac-counts with messages of undy-

ing love and support. After an unforgettable

year where she rose among thegiants, the 5-foot-3 stunner iscalling it quits.

For this Lady Altas, the realfight has just begun and her listof dreams is limitless.

‘‘Siyempre, masaya ako ngay-on,’’ said Dionela. “Pero hindidito lahat matatapos. Hangga’tpwede pa ako maglaro, maglalaro ako.’’

The Lady Altas hope to takeher volleyball career to the nextlevel as soon as she graduatesthis March and is aiming to jointhe country’s first professionalwomen’s league, the PremiereVolleyball League which willunwrap next year.

‘‘Maglalaro ako sa PVL atdoon ko makikita kung hang-gang saan ba yang mga digsko,’’ said Dionela in an exclu-sive interview. “First love kokasi ang volleyball kaya hindiko kaya iwan.”

‘‘Dati pangarap ko lang rin

maglaro sa NCAA at Shakey’s V-League,” said Dionela. “Kayana-realize ko talaga na walangimposible, kung kaya ko, kayarin nila.”

Dionela’s fascination withvolleyball started in 2005. Shecheered for the De La Salle Uni-versity Lady Archers.

Inspired by her family,Dionela bucked her smallframe to sizzle in the NCAA.

‘‘Malaki rin talaga angpangarap ko sa pamilya ko,’’said Dionela. “Tsaka gustoko rin ipakita sa mga gustomaglaro na dapat may pusolang sila at determinasyon.”

Petite and fragile-look-ing, Dionela cannot becounted out because ofher fighting heart.

MARU’S attacking prowess will lift the Tigresses. AUGUST DELA CRUZ

NOVEMBER 29-DECEMBER 6, 2012

Big dreams for Maru

A grade five student repre-senting her elementary schoolthen, the lone girl in theirclan who can play volleyballpoured her heart out on thatcourt, enough to impresssomebody who would changeher life.

‘‘Maliit ako eh,” she said.‘‘Maswerte na lang siguro

at maraming na-impress salaro ko.”

Now standing 5-foot-7, Ba-naticla has translated her po-tential into an actual weaponfor her school. And nine yearsdeparted from that regionalmeet, the now-19-year-old Ba-naticla is looking to lead the

perennial contender UST LadyTigresses back to the UAAPwomen’s volleyball glory.

Intimidating at first, thefourth year human resourcemanagement major is ascharming as she gets, recount-ing back when Francis Vi-cente, then-head coach of theUST High School girls’ volley-ball team, discovered her andoffered a spot in the team, where she teamed up withAlyssa Valdez, now with theAteneo Lady Eagles, andDindin Santiago, who is withthe NU Lady Bulldogs.

‘‘Malaking blessing talagasa akin iyon,” Banaticla said.

‘‘Maraming may gusto, pero konti lang yung nabibi-gyan ng pagkakataon.”

After a successful run withthe UST High School team, she was one of the highlytouted rookies to go up theranks to the seniors’ divisionin 2009.UST won the UAAP ti-tle during her rookie season.

But it has been two yearssince UST struck gold in wom-en’s volleyball. The big gunsof the 2010 championshipteam have also graduated.

The task is now left for Ba-naticla, team captain Caballe-jo, and Ortiz to lead UST backto its rightful place in theUAAP volleyball food chain--atthe top. ‘‘Aim high. Wala na-man kaming pupuntahan kun-di pataas,” Banaticla said, af-ter a fourth-place finish at theUnigames in Bacolod City.

By Randolph B. Leongson

P LAYING in a regional meet in Laguna, MarujaBanaticla had little inkling of the bigger thingsthat awaited her in the sport of volleyball.

DLSU LADY TENNISTERS

Out for revengeBy Alexx Esponga

N O MERCY. After leaving Bacolod City withgold medals around their necks, the De LaSalle University Lady Tennisters are ready to

reclaim what slipped from their hands last season inthe UAAP women’s tennis competition and add anoth-er grand championship trophy to their collection.

The girls used the 2012 Uni-versity Games to send a mes-sage to their UAAP foes.

‘‘We were too confident lastseason,’’ said captain MartinaGuba. ‘‘But we will not commit

the same mistakes again. We area better and much wiser teamthis year.’’

The Lady Tennisters of coachPereme Alina are definitely on amission. And they hope to causethe same kind of pain as they

felt last year.It was a devastating and un-

forgettable UAAP Season 75 forthe Lady Tennisters as theywere hoping to grab their thirdconsecutive championship title. But though they had a twice tobeat advantage, they ended upsecond behind long-time rivalUniversity of Santo Tomas Ti-gresses.

‘‘It was really hard for us be-cause since 2009, we werechampions, it was really bad,’’the Bacolod-native Guba added.

‘‘All of us expected to winthen we lost that’s why now, weare really improving ourselves,

line-up and help the players re-cover from their injuries.’’

Senior and Most ValuablePlayer Regina Santiago alsoshared that the team doesn’tthink about the pressure oncethey enter the court. Come thisJanuary, when the competition

starts, they will only thinkabout one thing and that isto win every single game.

‘‘Kabado kami beforethe tournament pero ka-pag nandoon na, iniisiplang namin na mana-lo,’’ said co-cap-tain Santiago.

‘‘Namo-moti-vate rin kami ngmga tao na sumusupor-ta sa amin kaya mas lalok a m i n g g i n a g a h a nmaglaro,’’ said Santiago,who is being supportedby Accel, Johnny Air

Cargo and Dunlop.‘‘Dapat may sarili rin

Exposure to differentleagues also toughen theteam as the Green Ten-nisters gain much-need-ed experience.

‘ ‘Unigames noongOctober, tapos th i smonth naman, meron

pang isang tournamentwhich is ’yung Phil ippine

Colombian Association Open,’’Guba said.

Even if the Lady Tennistershave their individual routines, they still make sure that theirbond as a team is solid and thateveryone is united. One impor-tant characteristic that a DLSUtennis player should have, ac-cording to Anne Rene Castillo,is hard work. They believe thatevery ounce of sweat is strongerand more capable of winningthan a gallon of talent.

And of course, as much asthey don’t take their eyes offthe ball, that’s also how itworks when it comes to theiracademics.

‘‘Kapag mababa ang gradesmo, mapapatalsik ka sa LaSalle,” said Arandia. “Kaya dap-at balanse ang academics atsports, habang gumaling sacourt, dapat nag-e-excel rin saclassroom.’’

THE ATENEO Lady Eagles have yet to win their first championship in the UAAP. Theycame close last year after handing the De La Salle Lady Spikers their first loss inGame 1 of the finals. This season could easily be their year because they still have a solid lineup that in-cludes powerhouses Gretchen Ho (@gretchenho) and Dzi Gervacio (@dzigervacio).They are still a favorite but they are not taking any team for granted.‘‘Every team is a threat. My high school coach would always say, ‘bilog ang bola.’Coach Roger (Gorayeb) always reminds us that all teams are aspiring to be champi-ons. Everyone goes to practice and would want to win in every game,” said Gervacio.Ho lays it down more simply, she wants that championship badly because she wants tobe remembered as a member of the very first champion volleyball team of Ateneo.
