TAKING THE BAD WITH THE GOOD
The Beast is aproven winner
6-foot-3 frame. But it clearlyhasnt stopped Abueva fromhoning his skills.
Most of the attention hasbeen on Abuevas gutsy scoringabilities that powered the Stagsto successful seasons, includingthe 2009 NCAA mens basket-ball championship romp. Butthis year, theres more consis-tency to his all-around game.
He sometimes brings theball down the court, thats onereason hes been having lots ofassists, said Robinson. Its alsoa good thing for him, to have
that kind of repertoire in hisgame. Its going to add up to hisarsenal.
Ive adjusted, admittedAbueva. If I cant shoot, Illplay defense or give an assist. But if I want to take a shot, Illfind a way).
True enough, Abueva oftenwants to get his way. But theStags see no problem with that.
Theyre saying he has thiscertain attitude, but hes such a
winner, said Robinson. Hestrying to prove to everyone thathes a winner. You have to re-spect that also.
By Jasmine W. Payo
TO THOSE dissing Calvin Abueva as an arrogantball hog only need to look at the stat sheetsthis season to realize how wrong they are.
As much as he still plays likea raging pit bull on court, domi-nating almost every possession, the San Sebastian star has actu-ally added dimension to hisgame.
For Abueva to lead the NCAAboth in scoring and rebound-ing(23 points and 12 rebounds
average) is a given. But to leadhis team in assists norming atfive dishes per game, is onething that has taken the leagueby surprise.
Calvin is one spectacularplayer, said San Sebastiancoach Topex Robinson. He re-ally earned his spot here in theleague.
So much so that its easy forRobinson to shrug off that badboy, get-out-of-my-way strut
Abueva still flashes. You have to take most of
the bad from the good, thatsCalvin, said Robinson.
Abueva has been tagged asThe Beast not only for hismonstrous double-double (andnear triple-double) outings butalso for his boundless energyand innate fierceness.
Im just really aggressive,
said Abueva.His scrappiness, in fact,

The Brothers Alas of Letran
Afterall, their fa-ther Louie, a hard-nosed defender dur-ing his prime beforebecoming a multi-ti-tled mentor, hadtaught them the ba-sics of the game.
The brothers Alasare playing togetherunder the banner of16-time NCAA cham-pions Letran Knightsin the current NCAAmens basketball
wars.Though they poss-
es the fighting hearts, they are poles apart
when it comes to sizeand playing positions.
Junjun is 6-foot-3,while Kevin stands 5-foot-9. Naturally, Jun-
jun likes to play inthe perimeter andbang bodies with the
big men of opposingteams, while Kevin di-rects the Knights play
while attacking thehoops and sinkingthose threes.
Kevin is Letransleader in scoring (14.3ppg). He leads theleague in steals (2.3spg) while posting 5.3assists per game.
"Our teams betterthan last year, saidJunjun. Junjun notedthat Letran has devel-oped into a more sta-ble team because hisfather stresses the im-portance of defense inits game.
The league is un-predictable and wemust be ready to re-spond, said Kevin.Everybodys hard-

DESPITE SLOW START
Bulldogs shedunderdogs tagsBy Lorenzo Z. Manguiat
THERE was a time not so long ago when play-ing against National University almost guar-anteed victory for the rest of the squads play-
ing in th e UAAP.
After all, since the Final Fourformat was implemented in1994, National U finished eitherin seventh or last place 14 outof 17 times and reached the Fi-nal Four only once back in2001.
The Sampaloc-based squadalso holds the dubious distinc-tion of the school with thelongest current championshipdrought in the league as it wonits lone mens seniors basketball
title in 1954, when the squad was led by former OlympianNarcisco Bernardo.
However, times are changingand the Bulldogs are deter-mined to shed the label as theUAAPs whipping boys.
With the support and back-
ing of the SM Group, NationalU managed to tie its best elimi-nation round finish in the FinalFour era with a 7-7 record last
year, just barely missing out thesemifinal round with its fifthplace finish.
So just how serious is Na-tional U about becoming a con-tender? One has to look no fur-ther than to see who the Bull-dogs have enlisted to turnthings around.
Junel Baculi, a multi-titledcoach in the Philippine Basket-ball League, was signed as theschools athletic director.
Eric Altamirano, a memberof the 1986 UAAP championUniversity of the Philippinessquad and a former head coachof the RP Youth Squad, wastasked to call the shots for theBulldogs starting this campaign.
With successful men leadingthe way, the culture of winningis slowly being instilled in theBulldogs.
Nevertheless, National U re-alized that it has to have the
manpower and talent to reachthe upper echelon of the
UAAP and thus, it hasalso now turned its at-tention to recruiting thebest players available.
The Bulldogsscored a recruitingcoup when they wereable to sign 6 foot 4
Bobby Ray Parks aswell as get formerhigh school stars KyleNeypes and CedricLabing-isa from theUST Tiger Cubs andGlenn Khobuntinfrom the LetranSquires.
Watch out forthe Bulldogs.Theyre not goingto roll over and
play dead anymore.
The son soon shall riseBy Denison Rey A. Dalupang
BOBBY RAY Parks Jr., the prizedrookie of National U, may havebeen the victim of his own bril-liance during a summer tourna-ment, where he averaged a sol-id 22.7 ppg.
After being penciled as oneof the elite rookies in the UAAP,the son of a PBA hoop legendhas struggled to fit the hype.
In his baptismal-of-fire colli-sion with the revamped USTGrowling Tigers, Parks failed torescue NU, but almost unnotice-ably, he did chalk up numbersacross several departments: A16-point outing alongside ninerebounds, three blocks and
three assists. In the first game I couldnt
breathe, said Parks. And then, against the UP
Fighting Maroons, the guy final-ly learned to exhale.
The 6-foot-4 southpaw her-alded his future as a UAAP su-perstar by draining 30 markers
while adding nine boards, threedimes and a couple of steals ina 35minute spectacle
that looked like a solo hoopclinic to help the Bulldogs se-
cure their first win.I definitely took on the pres-
sure, but the team succeeded. We played as a team.
There were struggles in thefirst game, but we got the jittersout, noted Parks.
Still, the young baller hasbeen given a taste of how hardhis freshman year will be. Peo-ple will always speak of himand superlatives and any per-formance that fails to match ex-pectations will be labeled a let-down.
And the next two gamesproved that.
The Bulldogs momentumwore off when they tangledwith the threetime defending
champs, Ateneo Blue Eagles.Parks was clamped down on bya fellow rookie, the
equally highly-touted KieferRavena, and labored for his 20points.
Following that loss to Ate-neo, Far Eastern U handed toParks and company their 2ndstraight lossand 3rd in fouroutings. The rookie sensation
was held down to a measley11 points.Clearly, though, the talent is
there. And the pedigree too.Parks was acquired by the
National U after his dad, ParksSr., a 7time PBA best import, took the cudgels of being asports consultant for the school. He decided to play for the Bull-dogs in hopes to render serviceto Smart Gilas Pilipinas and totake a shot into turning his NBAdream into reality.
Parks full potential was firstsighted in a Nike Global Chal-lenge hoops camp in Hillsboro,Oregon where he averaged 22points and 44.4 percent shoot-ing from beyond the arc wherehe played against squads thatincluded top recruits for the
American NCAA.
Despite the losses, spectatorsstill believe that Parks has yet toformalize his transition into theleagues game pace in order forthe Bulldogs to actually utilizehis game style to fuel a finalfour run.
National U also has to drawsolid performances from their oth-er cagers who have been reliablescorers during the preseasonskipper Joseph Terso andCameroonian Emmanuel Mbe. Af-ter all, basketball is a team game.

ADAMSON FALCONS COACH TALKS ABOUT HIS EAGLE SON
Austria on AustriaL
EO Austria, now onhis fifth year ascoach of the Adam-
son Falcons, is a happyman, nowadays.
Rightly so. The Falcons, whose last championship cameduring the 1977 cage wars, areinstalled one of the favorites in
the ongoing UAAP basketballchampionship.
Its safe to say that the Adamson community is thinkingbig this season. And we under-stand that, said Austria.
Austria, former PBA rookieof the year, is also happy andproud to see his eldest son Ray-mond Bacon Austria play top-level basketball with champions
Ateneo Blue Eagles. Were both professionals. I
have no problem telling mymen to play defense on Bacon. He should not be given openlayups, said the elder Austria.I believe that Bacon plays hisrole with the Eagle to the hilt
whenever he plays against us.Austria said the Falcons (2-1
win-loss record) are well-orga-nized this year. Though, welack playoff experience, there iscohesiveness among the players.I guess we dont want to beovershadowed anymore.
Adamson stretched Ateneo tothe limit before losing at thestart of the tournament. TheFalcons bounced back by dump-ing another pre-season tourna-ment FEU Tamaraws, 78-59 be-
fore halting the two-game win-ning streak of the UST Tigers,81-71.
I think teams are nowpreparing hard for us, noted
Austria.Despite limited playing min-
utes, Austria said his 6-foot-1Blue Eagle son has proven to be

UST Tigers pin theirfortunes on Fortuna
Small as he is, Fortuna is thecornerstone of the GrowlingTigers sound 2-1 start in the74th season of the UAAP, norm-ing 14.3 points and a handful of
assists.But the truth is, Fortuna
wasnt always the hometownhero all of the Thomasians lookup to today.
Filling in for the veteranplaymaker Japs Cuan, Fortuna,a converted point-guard, wasonce the trigger happy rookie
who loses the ball more than heactually makes a shot.
In several occasions, his oncequestionable shot selectiondown the stretch cost the then-rebuilding Tigers some crucialgames and left some hopefuls
wishing he hadnt touched theball.
"He (Fortuna) just had rookie jitters, said the wisecrackerhead coach of the Tigers, PidoJarencio.
"But it was good that he wasgiven a break because of Cuansinjury, Jarencio added.
Indeed, the dependable skip-per of the hungry UST squad
has come a long, fruitful way."Hes already made, said
Jarencio of Fortuna, who hasblossomed into an even deadliershooter with a real vision of aplaymaker.
The 19-year-old Fortunathinks of the hard court as hissafe haven. But not everyonegets to translate this familiarityof the game to a solid, overallperformance.
To announce his coming of
age, Fortuna fired eight threepointers to notch a personalrecord of 29 points in the 87-81
win over University of thePhilippines last season.
A year after, he did it again, powering the Tigers to a maid-en 73-72 victory against the NUBulldogs highlighted by a clutchthree pointer, six points in over-time for a stunning 23-point ex-plosion.
Which, actually, only provesone thing in the rivalrous worldof college basketball:
"Hes one of the best pointguards in the UAAP right now, stressed Jarencio.
But heres the catch. Fortunais not yet done improving andthis season, hes hoping to takethe Growling Tigers along withhim to the top.
