Dear Members,
I would like to wish everyone a belated Lunar New Year and great success for the year of the Horse. The month of March marks the club’s 20 years of service to all NS men. Most of you would have read the changes affecting our club in the media. Everyone in our organisation’s hierarchy is committed to working towards developing the club into a more family-centric place. We will use our resources to redevelop NSRCC, making it amongst one of the top Country Clubs for NS Men and their families.
NSRCC has gone through many changes over the years as we try our best to improve our service to all our members.
In ‘Seen & Heard’, we will be taking you back to our Year-End Party which was held in Stella at our very own Sea Sports Centre. Dining by the sea was truly one of the highlights, along with the sumptuous food and entertainment which lasted the entire night. Read all about it on page 6.
Staff of NSRCC recently took part in the Staff Interclub Bowling which was held at Singapore Swimming Club. The team emerged as the 1st Runner-Up. Read more about this on page 7.
Family Fun Golf is an enriching event that helps to strengthen family ties through a game of golf. Last December, we decided to have another go at it. The event had more participants this time round and it
was definitely a success! In Golf 101, focus on how a golfer should not improve the lie, area of intended stance or swing, or build a stance. An interesting read indeed for golfers who are looking to avoid penalties during your game.
We also have an interesting member’s article on his golf trip visit to St Andrews, Scotland, the birthplace of golf. Read all about the do’s and dont’s should you decide to make this historical trip!
The March holidays are here again and we have plenty of events lined up for you and your family!
It is perfect timing to take up a class and learn something new, especially if it is part of your New Year’s resolutions. Take up some vocal lessons or learn the basic techniques, tactics and rules of tennis. Why not let your child learn the logic and science behind magic in “The Disappearance of Little Ozzi Magician” or join in the ”Battle Robots” where you get to make your own! Not forgetting about our 17th Annual Swimming Carnival. If you are a swimming enthusiast or simply love to test your speed and skills, then you will be thrilled to take part in our forthcoming 17th Annual Swimming Carnival!
Till the next issue, keep well and stay healthy!

National Snooker League
NSRCC Flea MarketT he year-end flea market held on 1 December
turned out to be a success yet again!
Pre-loved, new and unused items such as clothing, sports apparel, children’s toys, costume jewellery, decorations, beddings and many more were sold at the flea.
Mr & Mrs Chee who were part of the day’s activities, rented two tables for their kids to allow them to feel and learn the art of “running their own” business for a few hours!
Isaac & Caleb practiced their mathematical skills and selling techniques without touting or forcing.
Well done kids!

T he National Snooker League 2013/14 kicked off in late November 2013. 10 NSRCC players
were selected to represent the club in Division 3.
Our players were all very competitive and had their eyes set on winning, but they still had fun at the same time with other participants.
The final match will be held on 12 March 2014 at NSRCC. We would like to wish all our players the best of luck for the game!

NSRCC Lends a Hand to the Visually HandicappedI n 2012, NSRCC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)
project reached out to the children from Chen Su Lan Methodist Home by giving them a memorable Christmas experience. Last year, the Club engaged the Mobile Massage Team of Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH) for a session of in-house massage. In addition, the Club also raised a sum of $1,500 from the sales of intricate handmade glass coasters amongst the staff.
The Mobile Massage Team is a crew of qualified and skillful visually-handicapped masseurs who provide massage services such as head and shoulder massage, foot reflexology and full body non-oil massage. They are actively deployed either at the in-house massage centre or outdoors for corporate, school or even community events.
On 18 and 19 December 2013, our staff at Kranji and Changi were treated to a relaxing shoulder massage. It was a refreshing experience for some who were first-timers at shoulder massages, but everyone also gained a pointer or two on ways to loosen the body’s tension from the knowledgeable masseurs.
The Club actively looks for opportunities to give back to society and through this experience, we gained extra insight that despite being visually handicapped, these inspiring individuals impressed us so much with their talents. We look forward to plan another successful project next year.

Welcoming the New Year!
seen&heard
L ast years’ end of year party was held at Stella in NSRCC Sea Sports Centre. The party was celebrated away
from the bustling sounds of the city. It is definitely a scenic evening as you dine by the harbour which is accompanied by a gorgeous skyline.
A night of family bonding it was, as everyone who came managed to bring down the whole family for some fun time.
The event started off with dinner and there was even a magic show for the little ones, kid’s game show, parent and child pairing game and not forgetting the dance aerobics. It was definitely a nice way to end the year.
We would like to thank our members and guests who made the year end party another successful and memorable event.
Wishing everyone a great year ahead!

NSRCC Nabbed Second Place at Staff Inter-Club Bowling
I t was a close competition between Team NSRCC and Team SSC (Singapore Swimming Club) as the scores
for both teams were neck and neck. Eventually, Team SSC broke through and came in victorious. Despite coming in second, our staff put up a tough fight and did well maintaining their scores, giving Team Singapore Recreation Club (SRC) no chance to catch up.
The Staff Inter-Club Bowling Competition is an opportunity for interaction and bonding between the staff of recreation clubs in Singapore.
We would like to congratulate all winners and look forward to another great game next time round.
We’re so proud of you, Team NSRCC!
Go Team!

2014 Asian Windsurfing Championship Return to Singapore
seen&heard
T he 2014 Asian Windsurfing Championship returns to Singapore and took place from 22 to
26 January 2014 from the National Sailing Centre.
Constant Wind played the part of supporting roll by renting the windsurfing equipment, providing the power boat for the race course, as well as manpower to help out during the event.
The 2014 Asian Windsurfing Championship returned
to Singapore and took place from 22 to 26 January from the National Sailing Centre.
It was a new venue for this championship, but the National Sailing Centre has seen its fair share of events such as hosting many international sailing events, including the 2010 inaugural Youth Olympic Games sailing regatta. Three classes were awarded their Asian titles at the SIM 33rd Singapore Open Windsurfing Championships.
resort view 8
seen&heard
For sailors in the Techno 293 Class it was their continental qualifier for the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, with 3 places available in both the boys and girls windsurfing events. Sailors competed to qualify their countries, and from there, they could then engage in their own national selection process to choose competitors before the Games commence in August 2014.
The Olympic class, RS:X, and the ex-Olympic class, Mistral One Design were also awarded Asian titles. These two classes have extra significance in Asia as they are events catered for both for women and men in the Asian Games.
The championship would like to once again thank its title sponsor Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) for its continued support and participation. Every year the regatta includes an event specifically for SIM students and it attracts entries from talented people where skill is secondary to effort and enthusiasm!
The SIM Group provides its core services through three educational brands: SIM University, SIM Global Education and SIM Professional Development.

T he Year of the Horse was ushered in at NSRCC during two special days filled with sumptuous food and happy people!
To kick-start the very first “Lo Hei” party, our Club President and Chief of Defence Force, LG Ng Chee Meng and members of our General Committee graced the event on 5 February.
The following day saw the next round of celebration held for all staff who tossed up and high for good fortune, luck, prosperity and a thriving business for this year!

Golfing at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews
memberfeature
M any of us dream of playing the ultimate golf game at no less than St Andrews Scotland, the Home of Golf. I had the
pleasure of doing exactly that with some kakis recently. Teeing off at the historic Old Course was truly awesome! I could really feel the spirit and history of golf as I stood at the first tee with my buddies.
We played 4 rounds at 4 different courses and greatly enjoyed the experience. The courses were tough and challenging and the weather mercurial. It could be fine and sunny one day and foggy with low visibility the next. However, that made completing the games with decent scores all the more satisfying at the end of the day.
If you are planning a trip to St Andrews, I have put together a few tips here that should help you enjoy a wonderful golfing holiday.
When to go?The best time to enjoy golf in St Andrews is in spring or summer; that is between March and October. Do note that it can still be chilly in summer due to the wind factor as St Andrews is near the coast. Make sure you bring enough warm wear.
Who can help organise?Go to the experts. We used the guys from the Old Course Experience (www.oldcourse-experience.com). They offer a variety of packages from 3 to 5 nights and will guarantee tee-times at the Old Course. Since you are travelling all the way to Scotland, I would recommend the 4-night package as a minimum. They also have packages for non-golfers.
How to get there? You will have to make your own way to Edinburgh as the golf package starts and ends at Edinburgh airport. The package includes transport, hotel accommodation, golf games and daily lunch. Dinner is not included.
Where to stay?Accommodation will depend on the package. If possible, choose the Old Course Hotel as it is just opposite the Old Course and you will have a great view of the action on the course from your hotel windows. The rooms are on twin-sharing basis so be prepared to fork out more if you need a single room.
What’s the cost? The 4-night package that we took cost 2,630 sterling pounds per person with 4 rounds of golf at the Old Course, Kingsbarns, Jubilee and Castle, St Andrews’ newest course. We enjoyed playing on these courses and I highly recommend them.
Golf in Progress, watch out for incoming golf balls!
Every part of St Andrews course is scenic!

On the fairwaysYou have to be fit to enjoy your game as walking is the rule unless you are aged 75 and above or have a medical certificate in which case buggies are allowed. Your golf game also needs to be sharp as the conditions are challenging – strong winds, hard ground and very fast greens to name a few. Do not forget to bring along your valid handicap card as you need to show it at some of the courses, particularly the Old Course.
What about caddies?I strongly recommend every golfer to get a personal caddy. The caddies know the courses and the playing conditions well and will help make your games very much more enjoyable. Especially on a foggy day when you can hardly see more than 20 metres ahead of you! The fee for a caddy is 45 sterling pounds and a tip of 10-15 sterling pounds will be appreciated.
Useful accessoriesA camera is a must. Bring your camera everywhere you go as the scenery on and off the fairways is worth capturing. And tried and tested golf shoes that are not only comfortable but waterproofed to see you through all your walking games.
Other than golfSince dinners are not included in the package, you will have to find your own. You do not have to worry here as besides restaurants serving Scottish and European food, there are numerous Thai, Indian and Chinese restaurants to satisfy your Asian cravings.
Members are welcome to submit articles or article ideas to [email protected]

Information Session on Land Acquisition Announcement @ NSRCCOn 16 February, Sunday, representatives from various agencies such as Singapore Land Authority (SLA), Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Public Utilities Board (PUB) gathered at NSRCC to brief our members on the land acquisition announcement.
resort view 14
frontpage
This session was chaired by BG (NS) Tung Fui Fai, Director National Service Affairs, MINDEF and Mr Teo Eng Dih, Director Manpower, MINDEF, who is also the Vice-President of NSRCC.
After the opening address by Director, National Service Affairs, the representatives from various agencies took turns to explain how the national development works would affect the Club.
The presentations included plans for the expansion of Changi Airport, construction of new highways and drainage expansion plans in areas overlapping the existing boundary of the Club. It was presented that the expansion of Changi Airport will affect the plot of Temporary Occupation License land occupied by Airforce course and Executive Par-3 course.
Part of the leasehold land occupied by Airforce and Army course will be affected by plans to construct a new highway and extend drain canals.
However, as recognition to the contributions of our NS men, the Club will receive a smaller plot of replacement land to minimise the impact on our members. In addition, the land lease for the location at Changi will be extended from 2023 to 2040.
To further minimise impact on our Club members, the Club will consider giving out rebates in the form of fee discounts and membership extensions.
To continue providing NS men with quality and affordable resort facilities, the Club will re-configure its affected golf courses at Changi to ensure there will be 18 holes playable at all times. New social facilities will be developed for NS men and their families.
Following this session, NSRCC will hold a few Town Hall sessions to engage members on their views and feedback on the future development plans of the Resort. Members are welcome to join the Town Hall sessions, and details of the sessions will be posted on the website and on our Facebook page.

NSRCC Born & Bred - Brandon Han on the RadarBy Phil Brew
It’s time Brandon Han meets the public. He is ready.
A Family Member of NSRCC since he began the game back 5 years ago, Brandon’s golf has progressed leaps and bounds since those early days. Our youngest prodigy to experience the Junior Golf Development Program that attracts the most dedicated and driven young players with a mission and that deserve to get people’s attention.
Brandon’s father, HJ Han has always been there for his son, always supported his passion for the game. It was fate that we met. HJ recalls looking around for various coaches that would be interested in training his son, but to no avail could he find anyone that fit the bill. Disappointed, he was driving out of the carpark, and he happened to see me as I was walking back to the Range from the Par 3 Executive from a playing lesson. He stopped the car and we chatted about his son’s golf lessons there in the carpark.
The rest is history. We struck a rapport that until today is as strong as ever. Brandon was a very quiet boy. Communication was difficult and often needed his father to be called into the lesson to help break the ice. Despite the difficulty Brandon remained steadfast on his goals. He developed a work ethic that was admirable and was able to change his swing very fast, in fact too fast because quite often he would go past the “answer” into mistakes on the other side of the answer. He had to be monitored regularly. The challenge was to find the feel of what I had wanted him to do as his coach and then have him repeat that over and over. The problem was that his body was constantly changing so therefore his swing had to adapt constantly as well.
The past 12 months has seen tremendous improvements. He is playing off the blue tees and has a real solid game. He has broken 80 already, breaks 40 for 9 holes every now and then, and even though that may not sound world class, you have to remember he is only 11 years old. Given his aspirations, and the fact that he is a strong young lad with his mental game and emotional control maturing, I see him heading for some real good things in the game. He is aggressive and that aggression is backed up with talent. That is always a good mix. He is learning when to go for it, and when to back off. His game is going from strength to strength. He is confident and golf has taught him that.
Brandon Han. Believe in yourself. You are now officially on the radar. Let your clubs do the talking.

Weekday Medals for Basic Members Moved to Weekend
From 1 January 2014, NSRCC will extend the privilege to Basic Members to play weekend medals instead of weekday medals.
This is after careful review by the Greens Committee in satisfying the minimum participants standards for the tournament.
As a result, weekday medals will be discontinued with immediate effect.

Tennis Xpress is an active and dynamic introduction to tennis for starter adult players and it is recommended by the ITF as the best way to learn the game. The Tennis Xpress course is centered primarily on the use of the slower Green Balls (25% slower than the regular Yellow Balls). The Green Balls are now an official ITF ball for all levels of national competition as per the ITF Rules of Tennis. An important aim of the course is to ensure that starter adult players learn to play the game fast and can serve, rally and score, from the first lesson.
By the end of the course they are able to:- know the basic techniques, tactics and the Rules of Tennis- can play competitive points using the Green or Yellow Balls on a full court
