MISSION AND AIMS OF THE SCHOOL

MISSIONLeweston is a Catholic boarding and day school which focuses on preparing pupils for life beyond the school. The independence, resilience and willingness to try instilled at Leweston provides pupils with the confidence to meet the challenges of the wider world. High standards are set both inside and outside the classroom, and our values of community, opportunity and respect are the bedrock of our school. We welcome pupils of all faiths and none, building a strong sense of community, courtesy, respect and affection that has, at its heart, prayer and service to others.

AIMS OF THE SCHOOLTo give pupils an experience of life in a Christian community:• By affirming each individual as a sacred and unique part of God’s creation, and nurturing in each person a sense of dignity and self-worth• By valuing diversity and appreciating the contribution that every pupil makes to the life of the school

To provide the highest quality of teaching and learning, which is responsive to and supportive of the needs and aspirations of the individual:• By fostering intellectual curiosity, a desire to seek truth, and a life-long love of learning• By enabling pupils to discover their own strengths and weaknesses, to learn from ‘failures’, and to develop the determination to persevere, in order to pursue their goals• By supporting all pupils in their pursuit of academic and personal excellence and ensuring every pupil can take part in the school curriculum

To provide a programme of sport and outdoor learning accessible to all which supports and enhances pupils’ personal development and academic achievements.

To forge relationships of trust and mutual respect between staff and students which contribute to the success of pupils in all aspects of school life.

To inspire pupils to develop their God-given gifts and be happy with who they are.

HEAD’S INTRODUCTIONWelcome to Leweston School. This booklet aims to provide all the information that you need over the next year. This is the first time we have provided information for parents in this manner and we hope it is helpful. If you have any feedback please do let us know at [email protected].

We look forward to working closely with you to support and challenge your child both inside and outside the classroom. Leweston pupils are well-balanced young people with a strong moral compass who take their place in the world with confidence, going on to contribute to society in many different ways, reflecting the many and varied opportunities available at the School.

The Leweston Friends’ Committee is a group of parents in the Prep and Senior Schools who organise social events each term. These can include wine tastings, quiz nights, family fun days or coffee mornings, the Prep Friends also organise the annual Spring Fair and Dog Show. There is a coffee morning on the first Friday of every month at the Prep School to which all parents are welcome. Money raised by the Friends’ is spent on events that the Committee organise for the pupils throughout the school year including trips, film nights and socials. They also recently supported the redecoration of the Year 7 Common Room.

All parents are welcome to join the Committee and anyone who is interested should contact Lucy Atherton Chair of the Senior School Friends, or Bridget Brittain Chair of the Prep School Friends.

HEALTH CENTREThe Health Centre is at the entrance to the Boarding House and is available to all pupils. It is run by Mrs Cole and Mrs Lale who are qualified nurses. They are here to encourage your child to take responsibility for their health, provide first aid and care for pupils when unwell. Mrs Worrall, Head of Boarding, is a registered nurse and will always be available should there be any emergencies.

Drs Tweedie and Morris are the School Doctors who provide surgeries twice a week for boarders.

The Health Centre is open daily from 8.00 – 18.00. House Parents care for boarders taken ill after 18.00. Parents and guardians wanting to speak to the Health Centre can call 01963 210834.

No pupil should bring any remedies from home. The Health Centre either stocks, or can get, whatever your child is likely to require. Any medications from home MUST be seen by the nurses in the Health Centre.

SCHOOL MENU AND CATERERSLeweston’s catering team provide healthy meals with a variety of choices and dishes. There is a selection of hot meat and vegetarian options on offer as well as a comprehensive salad bar, soup and fruit selection every lunchtime. A similar selection is repeated at supper and breakfast.

Specific medical or ethical dietary requirements are catered for. A weekly menu is available through the School website.

OLD ANTONIANS’ SOCIETYOne of the many features that Leweston is known for is the life long friendships that pupils forge during their time here. In order to support and maintain those friendships and to ensure that our alumni remain part of the Leweston community we co-ordinate a programme of reunions, publish and share news and provide an internal mentoring scheme which aims to build a network of members willing to provide information and advice to both current pupils and OAs.

The OAs and Former Parents also have their own Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/LewestonOA/

The cost of membership of the OA society is currently £110 which will be included on your child’s first term account when they enter the Senior School. This one-off fee provides lifetime membership of the Society and access to all of the publications and events the Society provides.

BOARDING AND DAY

Over half of Leweston’s pupils spend time in boarding, either flexi, weekly or full, and the School is proud of the outstanding level of pastoral care that it provides.

MARTHA HOUSE (YEARS 3 TO 8)House Parent – Mrs Lee Bruller

In Martha House, the focus is on making sure that we feel like we are all part of a friendly, supported, second family. Our aim is that you see Martha House as your home from home. We follow all the routines that you would do at home, for example, making your bed in the morning, making sure that you have everything you need for the school day and brushing your teeth after breakfast. At the end of the day and on weekends there is always lots to do, or very little to do, if that is what you need. There are exiting activities, including trips to Harry Potter World, Longleat Safari Park, Monkey World and Thorpe Park, to name a few, but sometimes we just go to the cinema or bowling or play cricket in the garden.

When we asked our pupils what they ‘liked most’ about boarding, they all said, “being with friends” and that “there is always somebody around”, which there is, all the time, even when you need someone during the night a member of the team is only a few steps away. We also asked what the pupils had learnt from being a boarder, they said “To help others, to be kind, how to share, how to get along with lots of different people and how to be a little more organised!” There is so much more and being a boarder means that you are part of a busy, thriving community.

(Please see Leweston’s Boarding Handbook for further information on The Boarding Houses)

DAY PUPILS’ WRAP AROUND CARELeweston provides day pupils with wrap around care from 8.00 to 18.00 through a wide range of after-school clubs and activities.

The list of activities is changed each term and is available through the School website. Supper is available on an occasional basis at 18.30. Bookings can be made online through the school website and must be made 24 hours in advance.

ARRIVAL AND COLLECTIONIn order to keep all pupils safe staff are the only unaccompanied adults allowed into the Prep buildings. The exception to this rule is Monday morning drop-off when the cloakrooms are open to parents to help the children with their kit for the week.

Morning drop-off on all other days is at the tennis courts where pupils should be dropped with their coats and book bags. The School bell is rung at 8.15 when pupils line up and are taken into class by their teacher. The classes walk into the buildings together. In the case of wet weather, procedures are the same but the children should be dropped off at the Padua Hall.

At the end of the School day Pre-Prep (Reception - Year 2) will be dismissed from the corridor by the Year 2 classroom. The member of staff on duty will release them to the person who is there to collect. Any children not collected at this time will be registered and taken to after-school care and tea. No child will be released until their parent has been seen.

Prep pupils (Year 3 - Year 6) will line up inside the Padua Hall and will be released by a member of staff once their parent has been seen. Once again children not collected will be served tea and then proceed to clubs.

Collection after school hours should be from the Padua Hall. Please ring the bell on arrival and a member of staff will fetch your child for you.

ACADEMIC LIFE

HOUSESAll pupils in the Prep School are placed into one of four Houses: St. Anne (Blue), St. Margaret (Red), St. Francis (Green) and St. Antony (Yellow). The children work to collect House points for good work, living according to the Golden Rules and demonstrating exceptional kindness. At the end of each term the House which manages to collect the greatest number of points wins a prize. Each House has a Year 6 Captain who is responsible for the general running, motivating and supporting of their younger peers and leading the half-termly House meeting. Ahead of the meeting, the Captains will prepare presentations for their Houses in which they focus on targets for the term, ways in which they can raise funds for chosen charities and how to maximise the number of House points they are awarded!

Each House has a House bear, complete with their own colour-coordinated outfit and passport. The pupils are encouraged to write to their House Captain requesting to take the House bear home for the holidays, with the House Captain selecting the author of the most persuasive letter to be the lucky host.

Throughout the year, the children participate in mixed age events in their House teams, such as our Easter egg hunt, World Book Day activities and sports events. We also hold an annual House music competition where the House Captains work independently with their teams to develop a whole group performance and individuals perform musical pieces to win additional points for their House.

At the end of the year, we hold our annual Sports Day and Swimming Gala, when pupils compete on behalf of their House team, with one House winning the prestigious trophy and displaying their coloured ribbons on it for the following year.

THE CURRICULUM We offer a varied and stimulating curriculum which aims to support and stretch each individual child to achieve academic excellence and exceptional progress. The learning programme is varied and specifically designed to equip pupils with the practical and personal skills necessary for life outside of School.

Children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage programme, learning through cross-curricular activities designed to follow their interests. In addition to this they have lessons in Music, PE, French, Spanish, Swimming and Forest School.

In other years the 2014 Primary National Curriculum, Key Stages 1 and 2 Framework is delivered where appropriate, however as an independent school, we are free to adapt our curriculum as we see fit, so we take the requirements and expectations of the National Curriculum and build upon these to enhance the offering. We always seek to add breadth and to extend additional opportunities.

Curriculum maps for all year groups are available through the School website.

HOMEWORKPre-Prep

In Reception and Year 1, the children are expected to read at home regularly, and every day if possible. The Year 1 children have a small number of spellings to learn on a weekly basis. Additionally, they may occasionally have some Maths facts to learn or something to find out about, but there is no formal homework. In Year 2, the children are still expected to read at home and they will have times tables and spellings to learn. They will also, on occasion, have a simple task to complete at home, in order to consolidate some classroom work.

ACADEMIC LIFE

Prep

In Years 3 to 6 the children continue to have times tables and spellings to learn on a weekly basis and they are expected to read regularly. Reading aloud is a skill that they need to maintain, so it is helpful to continue to read to an adult, even when your child is able to read fluently. In addition, they will be set homework on a weekly sheet, including one or two compulsory tasks and several optional tasks, if the children would like to do more. These tasks are always linked to work that is currently being completed at school and are designed to deepen the children’s understanding. Every class has a prep session within their weekly timetable when they are able to complete some of this work and there is a daily prep club after school, with a member of teaching staff on hand, if your child would like to complete their homework before heading home for the day.

ONLINE LEARNING JOURNALAll children in the Prep have a personal online Learning Journal which builds a record of their experiences during their time with us. Your child’s progress and attainment are recorded and evidenced in the system, so you will be able to monitor this as often as you wish. The journal also provides you with an insight into your child’s school day with regular photographs of daily lessons, sports fixtures, trips and much more.

The Learning Journal is called Tapestry; a system hosted in the UK on secure servers. You will have secure access (via email address and password) to your child’s Learning Journal and, in addition to viewing our contributions, we encourage you to add to it by uploading photos and comments or commenting on observations made by us.

Where do I start?

Once you have provided us with your chosen email details we will set-up two accounts for you. You will then be emailed a password.

To access Tapestry go to www.tapestryjournal.com on your computer, or if you have an iPhone or iPad, visit the iTunes store and download the Tapestry app from the Education section (search for TapestryMobile). Log in using your email address and password. We strongly recommend that you change your password on your first visit.

Changing your settings

PCAt the top right of your screen you will see your name, selecting this will give you the option to ‘Edit Preferences’. Choose this option and you will be presented with a screen giving you the option to change your email address and password. You also have the option to receive an email whenever a new observation is added to your child’s Learning Journal – just tick or untick the relevant box if you would like to change this setting.

iPhone/iPadTo change your settings on the iphone/ipad app, click the ‘cog’ button on the bottom right hand side of the application. This enables you to change password and/or email address.

Viewing your child’s Learning Journal

Once logged in, you will see your child’s observations on your home screen in a list – selecting any one of these will open up the observation for you to look at. You can add comments in the box at the bottom of the observation if you would like to - and we love to receive them!

Adding an entry to your child’s Learning Journal

Choose the ‘Add Observation’ option (or the ‘plus’ icon on your iphone/ipad) and add the relevant information in the boxes on screen. Photos and videos may be uploaded by choosing the ‘add media’ option. When you have saved your observation, you may go back to the home screen at any time by choosing ‘home’. This is a great way to share information from home with us at school.

If you have any difficulties please email [email protected] or [email protected]

ACADEMIC LIFE

In addition to Tapestry you will receive either written or face to face reports on your child’s attainment on the following timetable:

October – Tracking report

November – Parents’ Evening

January – Tracking report

March – Parents’ Evening

May – Tracking report

July – Full academic report

EXAMINATIONSAs an independent school, Leweston is not required to participate in the formal SATs testing at Year 2 and Year 6. Pupils sit our own examinations and assessments, so that they become accustomed to the discipline required in examinations, but these are approached as a natural part of the school year and can never tell us as much as our continual teacher assessment of the pupils.

LEARNING SUPPORTWhen a child requires additional support, we have a dedicated SENCo who can provide one-to-one lessons to target areas of need. Often these lessons are used to introduce concepts ahead of the rest of the class so that the pupil does not feel left behind and is equipped to more readily follow the content of the lesson. This helps them to build confidence and assurance.

The Prep can provide initial individual assessments and if necessary, arrange assessments with an educational psychologist. Tailored lessons are timetabled weekly, and individual education plans are shared with all staff. Pupil progress is closely monitored and there is regular consultation with parents.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONSInstrumental music lessons are charged £223 a term with shared recorder lessons at £114. The lesson fees cover a total of thirty lessons per academic year, payable in three instalments. If the teacher is self-employed, you will be contacted directly and if they are employed by the school, the fees will be added to your end of term account. As some terms are longer than others, most music staff will give more lessons in the Autumn and Spring terms and less in the Summer.

MUSIC AND DRAMA

If a member of staff is absent for any reason, they will ensure that your child receives an extra lesson as soon as possible to compensate. If your child is absent through illness, the member of staff will endeavour to make up the lost lesson, although you will appreciate that with a limited amount of spare time, this will not always be possible.

On committing to music lessons you are giving permission to the music teacher to purchase up to £25 worth of music books per academic year and this cost will be added to your termly bill. Should the requirement go beyond the £25 limit, the teacher will contact you for written permission on any additional purchases. If you would prefer not to open this blanket order option and would like to be contacted for every music book purchase, please contact the Head of Music and Performing Arts, Mrs Jane Robotham at [email protected]

It is expected that your child will practise every day wherever possible, taking into account the points for improvement written by the member of staff during each lesson.

STRING ORCHESTRA AND WIND ENSEMBLE SAMBA BAND

LAMDALAMDA stands for the London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art. It is a recognised exam syllabus that provides an accredited level of achievement in Grades 1-8. In the Prep LAMDA is offered in groups of one to six to encourage skill development in a supportive environment.

Private ‘group drama’ is a paid activity charged at £144 per term. The charge is based on an average of ten lessons per term. As with other paid clubs and activities, a term’s notice is required for those wishing to stop. Unlike clubs such as cookery, it should not be viewed as single term’s activity. For those expressing a desire to have a ‘taster’ session, it may be possible to give notice at the end of the first half term, but we would stress it should be seen as a group commitment until the final exam at the end of the academic year.

Session times are 45 minutes in duration, during lunchtime or after school between 16.20 and 17.00. Lunchtime sessions are usually reserved for Years 1 to 3. Years 4, 5 and 6 are mostly after school unless earlier slots are available. Specific group times are dependent on numbers (and grades) being taken. As you will appreciate, it is impossible to create a timetable that can cater for all other commitments, but if there is one specific day or time that you would like to avoid you can do so when signing up for classes.

We would highlight that LAMDA, while fun for those taking part, is primarily an exam based activity, and should only be undertaken by those seriously wanting to develop their skills over the coming year.

ACTIVITIES TIMETABLEIn the Prep School activities run from 16.30 to 17.30 every day. The programme varies each term with parents being sent the activity list and pupils changing their options every term. It is also available via the School website.

PENTATHLONIn September 2016 Leweston was awarded Pentathlon Academy status by Pentathlon GB, making it one of only nine schools in the country to enjoy this status. The award has been made in recognition of the support and contribution the School has made to the sport of Modern Pentathlon and the development of school and local community athletes. Leweston makes a significant contribution to the PGB Pathway and is one of the cornerstones of the GB Squad.

The Academy caters for athletes of all abilities and any pupil in the school can join, they just need to show an interest in multi-sports events and be willing to work towards improving their performance. Leweston’s highly experienced resident Coach, Mick Flaherty, organises and delivers dedicated training and mentoring programmes tailored to individual needs and abilities. This year the Academy has had athletes competing at all levels of the sport from their first event to Regional, National, European and World Championships.

For further information on the Pentathlon Academy, please visit our website or contact [email protected]

EQUESTRIANLeweston has a proud equestrian tradition with pupils regularly competing at NSEA events, the school has just won the NSEA Regional Points League for the second year running, are current NSEA National Dressage Champi-ons and National Champions for the Open Eventers Challenge 2018.

Pupils compete in showjumping, dressage and JWS from Prep through to Sixth Form and we hold regular training sessions with Emma Fisher, British Eventing Team Coach for Young Riders.

Leweston is an NSEA affiliated school and hosts its own NSEA Inter-Schools RPL and Grass Roots Show Jumping Competition every September with a one day event at BE Bricky in October in conjunction with the Pony Club.

NOTICE PERIODA term’s notice (given before the final day of the preceding term) must be given in writing to the Head if:

• a pupil is being removed from the School; or • a pupil has a change of status e.g. from day to full or weekly boarding; or, • there is any change to optional extras.

Failure to give notice will result in a term’s fees in lieu being charged.

TERMLY DIRECT DEBIT SCHEMELeweston offers parents the opportunity to pay each term’s fees in three instalments by direct debit (our Termly Direct Debit Scheme), no service or interest charges apply. Extras and incidental costs continue to be due on the first day of each term.

If you are interested in paying by direct debit, please contact the Bursary by emailing [email protected] or telephone Kate Smith on 01963 211024. You will then be sent the invoice terms and conditions and a direct debit mandate to complete.

The termly direct debits are taken on the following dates:

Autumn Term: Spring Term: Summer Term:1 August 2018 3 December 2018 1 March 2019

3 September 2018 2 January 2019 1 April 2019

1 October 2018 1 February 2019 1 May 2019

You also have the option to pay your extras via our Variable Direct Debit Scheme. The payments are taken once a term on the following dates:

The Termly Direct Debit Scheme is a discretionary arrangement offered on a termly basis to assist with spreading the cost of school fees. The School reserves the right to withdraw or amend the terms of the Termly Direct Debit Scheme by giving notice in writing before the beginning of any new school term. No agreement for the deferral of future fees will be valid unless it provides for no more than four instalments within a 12 month period from the date of the agreement.

CHILD CARE VOUCHERSLeweston accepts vouchers from a number of different child care schemes which can be used to pay for after School activities and holiday clubs for children up to the age of 12 or 16 depending on the scheme. Childcare vouchers cannot be used to make payments for School fees.

BOARDING AND DAYOver half of Leweston’s pupils spend time in boarding; either flexi, weekly or full time, and the School is proud of the outstanding level of pastoral care that it provides.

MARTHA HOUSE (YEARS 3 TO 8)House Parent – Mrs Lee Bruller

Martha House is situated in the beautiful Manor House, and is a vibrant, welcoming and safe place for boarders from Years 3 to 8. Mrs Lee Bruller is the Martha Houseparent and she lives in the House to give the boarders the care, attention and support they need.

The house is a fun and lively place and all boarders are encouraged to involve themselves fully in the life of the School and the large variety of activities that are on offer. With dog walks, hide and seek, movie nights, bikes and go karts the boarders in Martha House have little time to get bored and each boarder is encouraged to involve themselves as much as they want and need to.

Weekends provide the opportunity to venture outside of school and enjoy trips to the coast or local attractions. Important ‘down time’ is also encouraged and a Martha House favourite are the regular ‘sleepy Sundays’ which offer the boarders a much needed lie in and relaxed breakfast in house. Birthdays and special events are eagerly anticipated and celebrated.

When we asked members of Martha House what was best about being a boarder they said ‘to help others, be kind, learn how to share, how to get along with different people and how to be a little more organised!’

CECILIA HOUSE (YEARS 9 TO 11)House Parents – Mrs Lee Bruller (Year 9) and Mrs Lu Worrall (Years 10 – 11)

Cecilia House is run by two House Parents Mrs Bruller and Mrs Worrall. This is to recognise that both new and existing boarders may benefit from a little more support in the transitional Year 9 before starting their journey into the important exam years ahead.

Boarders in Years 9 and 10 live in colourful and spacious dorms of four or five in the main school building. Each boarder has their own bed and space to decorate with pictures from home as well as a well-equipped common room for relaxation. Year 11 boarders move into a separate wing and have single or double rooms to recognise their changing needs and greater levels of independence, preparing them for Sixth Form.

As senior pupils, all Cecilia House boarders are encouraged to get involved in the life of the school. These years are important both academically and for emotional and social development – it is a time for boarders to enjoy exploring their interests; following their enthusiasms, and learning to co-operate with each other as they become more independent. Boarders and staff in Cecilia House meet regularly at house meetings and at a variety of informal occasions to communicate, co-operate and socialise.

ELEANOR HOUSE (YEARS 12 TO 13)House Parent – Mrs Lu Worrall

Sixth Form boarders at Leweston live on South Wing in Eleanor House. All full boarders have their own individual study bedrooms and the use of two Common Rooms. Boarders have access to a laundry room where they can take control of their own washing and the common room kitchens which are available for use at weekends. These are some ways that boarders can develop their own independent living skills as they prepare to move on to life at university and the world beyond school.

Boarders in Years 12 and 13 enjoy both the company and support of their peers in the House but are also very involved in the wider boarding community. As Sixth Formers they are role models for the younger boarders and take on responsibility for organising social and charitable events and community duty rotas.

Boarders in Eleanor also have increased freedom over their free time and opportunities to go out of School at the end of the day and at weekends as well as invite guests into the house social areas.

(See Boarding Handbook for further information on The Boarding Houses)

BOARDING AND DAY

DAY PUPILS’ WRAP AROUND CARELeweston provides day pupils with wrap around care from 8.00 to 18.00 through a wide range of after-school clubs and activities. The list of activities is changed each term and is available through the School website. Supper is available on an occasional basis at 18.30.

There is also the opportunity for day pupils to flexi board if desired and a wide ranging network of local daily transport.

Bookings can be made online through the school website.

ACADEMIC LIFE

HOUSES The House system at Leweston encourages a sense of belonging within the School and gives opportunities for pupils to work with those in other year groups. The School does not have separate day and boarding houses.

Each pupil belongs to one of four Houses: Campion (Green), Fisher (Red), Mayne (Yellow) and More (Blue). An exciting range of events are organised throughout the year from music and drama through to debating and ‘It’s a Knockout’ style competitions. These give pupils the opportunity to help plan and organise events and show off their talents. Each House has a House Captain, who is part of the Year 13 prefect team, and is responsible for coordinating events as well as a staff Head of House:

Campion Mrs A L Griffiths Mayne Mr P AinsworthFisher Dr R Milestone More Mrs L Gammon

THE TUTOR SYSTEMEvery pupil in the Senior School has a tutor and tutor group to which they belong. Their tutor supervises and guides their academic progress as well as playing an important role in their pastoral care. Pupils meet with their tutors two or three times a week. Tutors are available for parents to contact at any time but you will also have the opportunity to speak with them at Parent/Staff Consultation evenings. Each year group has a Head of Year who leads and coordinates the Tutor Team;

THE CURRICULUMYear 7 – 9 (Key Stage Three)

All pupils follow a wide ranging curriculum taught by subject-specialist teachers including:Art and DesignBiologyChemistryEnglishFrenchHistory

Home EconomicsICTGeographyLatinMathsMusic

PEPerforming ArtsPhysicsPSHEReligious StudiesSpanish

Pupils are set for Maths from Year 7. In Year 9 pupils are streamed into broad ability sets for all subjects and there is now GCSE preparatory work for many subjects in Year 9. An outline of the curriculum for each year group can be viewed on the school website.

Year 10 - 11 (GCSE)

We work hard to offer a varied choice of subjects and supporting activities at GCSE and, whatever a pupil’s strengths, there will be a suitable combination of subjects. Our individual approach to teaching and learning ensures every pupil is supported and encouraged in their chosen programme. The curriculum and teaching is designed to lay the foundations for the A Level, Pre-U or BTEC choices available at Sixth Form.

All pupils take GCSEs in the core subjects of English Literature, English Language, Mathematics, Science (either combined science (2 GCSEs) or three separate GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics) and Religious Studies. Pupils choose a language from French, Spanish or their native language plus EAL. They are then free to choose up to three option subjects, which include History, Geography, Latin, Music, Drama, Art and Design, Home Economics, Physical Education and Computer Science. Able mathematicians may also take Further Mathematics.

More information including details on the individual subjects and examinations is available in our GCSE booklet on our website.

Sixth Form

Leweston offers three different qualifications in Sixth Form: A Levels, BTECs and the Cambridge Pre-U.

Most students take three A Levels which, combined with the enrichment programme, provides a breadth and depth of learning. Some students will follow four subjects, usually where both Mathematics and Further Mathematics are studied. As far as possible the School allows students to choose any combination of subjects they want but will advise on a course of study if a student has a particular university course or career in mind.Typically Sixth Formers have 10 hours of teaching per subject per fortnight. In addition to their chosen subjects they attend lessons in Religious Studies, Physical Education and the enrichment subjects.

The Sixth Form Course Directory, which includes detailed information on all of the options available, can be viewed on our website.

HOMEWORKPupils are set homework from Year 7 onwards according to a published homework timetable. The length and number of pieces of homework varies across year groups. There is a supervised Prep session in the Library for day pupils from 4.45pm to 5.45pm daily and from 5.45pm to 6.45pm for boarders.

REPORTSEvery pupil receives an annual full written report and there is an annual parent consultation evening for each year group. In addition pupils receive half termly grades.

EXAMINATIONSYears 7 - 9

Internal examinations are sat by all pupils in the second half of the summer term between Thursday 6 June to Wednesday 12 June 2019.

Years 10 -11

The GCSE is gained by completing a two year course including, in some cases, controlled or Non-Examined Assessments (NEA) with a final examination. They are based on national criteria which apply to every subject. All syllabuses, examination schemes and grading in each subject have to comply with these so all boards are of comparable standards.

The Non-Examined assessments allow students to show their practical and/or oral skills and their ability to tackle longer pieces of work. These assessments are set by teaching staff, in accordance with the syllabuses, at intervals throughout the two years of study. Some subjects have specific requirements for the completion of fieldwork or practical tasks.

Written papers at the end of the course are designed so that all students have the opportunity to show what they know, understand, and can do, without regard to the performance of others. Where ‘tiers’ exist, certain tiers willlead to a specific range of grades. There is more information on this in the individual subjects.

Year 10 pupils sit internal examinations in the second half of the summer term and Year 11 pupils sit mock GCSE examinations at the beginning of the spring term.

Mock GCSE’s will take place Monday 7 January to Friday 11 January with a contingency day on Saturday 12 January 2019.

School exams for Year 10 will take place Thursday 6 June to Wednesday 12 June 2019.

Public written exams for Year 11 will be between Monday 13 May and Wednesday 26 June 2019, with 26 June marked as a possible contingency day in case of any national or local disruption to exams.

LEARNING SUPPORTAt the cornerstone of Leweston’s educational approach is personalised learning and at every stage the school works hard to ensure the educational needs of every pupil are met. Leweston has specialist professionals on the staff to assist those pupils who need some extra support to achieve academically.

We can provide initial individual assessments and if necessary arrange assessments with an educational psychologist. Tailored lessons are timetabled weekly, and individual education plans are shared with all staff. Pupil progress is closely monitored and there is regular consultation with parents.

MUSIC AND DRAMA

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC LESSONSInstrumental music lessons are arranged on a rota basis for Years 7 to 11. Pupils learning two instruments will usually have one fixed at a non-academic time. In Year 11, every effort is made to fix music lessons in your child’s free time or in non-academic lessons and this is possible in the vast majority of cases.

Instrumental music lessons are charged £293 a term.

The lesson fees entitle your child to a total of thirty lessons per academic year, payable in three instalments. If the teacher is self-employed, you will be contacted directly and if they are employed by the school, the fees will be added to your end of term account. As some terms are longer than others, most music staff will give more lessons in the Autumn and Spring terms and less in the Summer.

If a member of staff is absent for any reason, they will ensure that your child receives an extra lesson as soon as possible to compensate. If your child is absent through illness, the member of staff will endeavour to make up the lost lesson, although you will appreciate that with a limited amount of spare time, this will not always be possible.

On committing to music lessons you are giving permission to the music teacher to purchase up to £50 worth of music books per academic year for your child and this cost will be added to your termly bill. Should the requirement go beyond the £50 limit, the teacher will contact you for written permission on any additional purchases. If you would prefer not to open this blanket order option and would like to be contacted for every music book purchase, please contact the Director of Music Dr Rachel Milestone at [email protected]

On committing to music lessons you are agreeing to your child being entered for a music exam on the recommendation of the instrumental/singing teacher and to pay the appropriate fee at the end of the relevant term.

You are reminded that a full term’s notice (10 lessons) will be required in writing to cease any music lessons, and must be notified to the Director of Music.

LAMDAIn Years 7, 8 and 9 optional extra individual or shared Speech and Drama lessons are held on a rotational basis which means pupils come out of one subject lesson every half of term. In Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 Speech and Drama lessons are held at lunchtime, after school, in free or study periods. Drama Scholars are required to take Speech and Drama lessons.

All students taking Extra Speech and Drama lessons will be required to take LAMDA examinations annually unless we receive written notification to the contrary. There will be a charge for LAMDA exam entries in the summer term.

Pupils also perform in the annual Mid-Somerset Festival of Speech and Drama at Bath for which entry fees and transport costs are charged.

Parents are reminded that a full term’s notice in writing is required if they wish their child to discontinue any extracurricular subject. A full term’s notice is also required if a pupil wishes to change from solo to shared status or vice versa.

The Senior School runs two LAMDA groups due to the popularity of the activity. Pupils are allocated groups on a random basis by the Head of Drama.

SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES

LEITHS, SIXTH FORM ONLYLeweston is delighted to be continuing to offer, as a Sixth Form enrichment activity, the highly successful ‘Leiths Academy Introductory Certificate in Food and Wine’. The certificate is an internationally recognised qualification and Leweston is one of only fourteen schools in the country franchised to offer the course at Sixth Form. The course is aimed at those who wish to gain an excellent grounding in cooking skills; and may also help students to finance themselves at university!

The certificate opens to students in Year 12. The course will be timetabled as a three-hour session, on one after-noon per week, for five terms. Students gain confidence in a wide variety of practical skills and techniques, such as knife skills, vegetable, fish and meat preparation, and bread making, baking and sauces. They also undertake practical tasks such as producing time plans for each practical session, menu-planning exercises and the theory associated with the practical skills used in the course.

At the end of the course, students take a practical and theory exam devised by Leiths; successful candidates are awarded their qualification, together with a food safety and hygiene certificate, which is essential for work in the catering industry. Should they decide to take up cooking professionally, they would be eligible for the Two Term Diploma at Leiths School of Food and Wine. Students participating in the course over the two years will also achieve Confederation of Tourism and Hospitality certification and UCAS points.

The course also offers students the opportunity to put their skills to work through Leiths List, an employment agency which matches students with a wide range of paid, family-level cooking jobs, including ski chalet work, yacht catering, private catering, and cooking for families on holiday.

The cost of the course, which includes teaching, equipment, Leiths uniform, Leiths ‘How to Cook’ book, an individual set of professional knives, and examination and certification, is £2250, invoiced at the beginning of the course. In addition, the cost of ingredients will be added to the termly fee invoice; owing to the nature of the course, the cost per term for ingredients will fluctuate, but is unlikely to exceed £75.

D of EThe Duke of Edinburgh Award flourishes at Leweston with approximately 30% of the eligible pupils in the school taking part.

The Award is designed to equip young people with skills for life. It challenges participants to discover hidden talents, cultivate new skills and develop a confidence and view on life that everyone is looking for, including universities and employers. Participants also make a difference to others and their local community. To complete the Bronze and Silver Awards students must undertake four types of activity: volunteering, physical, skills and expedition and for Gold Award an additional residential activity.

Participants are expected to serve others, acquire new practical skills, develop physical recreation interests and experience the adventure of expeditions. Pupils can enrol in Bronze from Year 9 and Silver from Year 10.

Gold Award pupils are able to assist with community service or become involved in charity fundraising activities at school although many find alternative volunteering opportunities outside school. Pupils can enrol for Gold as soon as they reach 16 in Year 12. In recent years Leweston’s Gold candidates have completed the expedition section of their award in Peru, South Africa and Morocco.

More information is available from Mrs Wells on [email protected]

UNIFORMSixth Form Dress Code

In recognition of the maturity and individuality of the students we do not require Sixth Form to wear school uniform. However, they are expected to set an example to the rest of the school and should be smart and tidy, wearing clothes that are appropriate to a working environment.

When a student is taking part in a practical subject or sports it may be necessary to wear overalls over their normal clothes, or to change into something more suitable in order to comply with health and safety. Normal clothing should be worn on leaving that lesson or activity unless it is an all-day event.

Midweek school Mass and when representing Leweston at public events:

• Smart black or navy suits – skirts must not be shorter than just above the knee or longer than mid-calf and must be suit skirts rather than bodycon in style.• Year 12 - smart white shirt/top• Year 13 - smart shirt/top of any colour • Black/navy shoes• Tights (girls only)

Unacceptable every day wear includes:

• Scruffy clothing• Denim jeans of any colour• Leggings or jeggings• Shorts • Skirts that are shorter than mid-thigh in length • Revealing clothing of any sort – tops should not be strappy, reveal the midriff or be décolleté• Hoodies or tops with slogans• Sportswear including trainers, canvas or deck shoes• Excessively high heels• Flip-flops • Facial piercings, excessive make up or extreme hair styles (cut or colour)

Sixth Form Sportswear

This may be purchased from the Leweston School Shop: • Navy polo shirt with ‘Leweston Sixth Form’ logo.• Navy tracksuit bottom.• Pale blue hoodie with ‘Leweston Sixth Form’ logo.• Any colour trainers (but not fashion trainers). Pupils representing the school at netball or tennis will need predominantly white trainers.

Where a student is concerned about the appropriateness of their clothing choices, they should consult their tutor or Head of Sixth Form for guidance.

INFORMATION FOR PARENTS FROM OVERSEASThis is intended to be a guide for overseas parents who may not be familiar with the way that the British school system is organised. We hope it will be useful in giving an overview of how your child will progress through their time at Leweston.

Senior Schools (sometimes called Secondary Schools).

Usually pupils move to a Senior School at age 11 (this school year is called Year 7) or age 13 (Year 9), this will depend on the Preparatory or Primary School they have attended before and the particular Senior School they are moving on to. Some pupils will then join a different school at 16 to take their A Levels.

Leweston takes most of its new pupils at the age of 11 (Year 7) and 13 (Year 9) and then another significant group at 16 (Year 12), but pupils do join in other year groups so it is quite usual for us to be supporting students starting at different stages.

Years 12 and 13 are often also referred to by the older name of Sixth Form (Year 12 = Lower Sixth, Year 13 = Upper Sixth).

Public Examinations

There are two main levels of examination for which British schools prepare their pupils. At 16 pupils take GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) and at 18 they take A Level (A stands for Advanced). There is also an alternative qualification to A Levels, the Cambridge Pre-U (a two year course, taken continuously through Years 12 and 13), which Leweston offers in English Literature. Leweston offers three different qualifications in Sixth Form: A Levels, BTECs and the Cambridge Pre-U.

Timing of Examinations

Public examinations are taken in the summer term (May and June), at the end of courses. All Year 11 and 13 will sit public examinations at the end of that academic year. In addition, overseas pupils in year groups other than these may sit formal exams in English as a second language, such as Cambridge First Certificate.

Pastoral Care

Your child will have a number of key figures in the school who will be there to support and guide them.

Overseas students, like all other boarders, have a House Parent, who is responsible for them in the Boarding House and who is there to provide pastoral support and care at all time. The House Parent is a very important point of contact for you and will work in communication with Heads of Year and tutors to ensure that your child is happy, fulfilled and making good progress.

Heads of Year have an academic and pastoral overview for all the pupils – they will monitor their progress and are there to advise and support both pupils and their parents. They work with a team of tutors. Each student is put in a tutor group and sees their tutor twice each school day for registration and to be given notices, as well as having other focused tutorial times during the week when their tutors can keep track of how they are getting on. Contact details for all of these staff can be found in the Contacts Section at the back of the booklet, page 54.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Communication with Parents

School reports and other letters and information will be sent to overseas parents initially by e-mail. It is very important that we have an accurate e-mail address for contacting parents. This enables us to make contact quickly and get information to you efficiently.

Please inform Nicola Holmes of any changes to your contact details on [email protected]

Holidays, Half-terms and Exeats

There are three terms in the School year. The first term (Autumn) normally runs from the beginning of September until mid December. The second term (Spring) runs from early January until late March. The third term (Summer) runs from mid-April until the beginning of July. There is a half term holiday in the middle of each term and two exeat weekends per term (one in the Summer). The length of these varies from term to term. In the Autumn term it is two weeks and in the Spring and Summer a week. The school closes and pupils go home or go to their guardians.

There is usually one exeat weekend in each half term. An exeat is a weekend when all pupils leave school. Pupils go home, to their guardians or are invited to stay with the families of their friends. Pupils are allowed to leave school on other weekends by arrangement with their House Parent.

Boarders are welcome back from 12pm at the beginning of terms. Parents or guardians are welcome to help bring things up to the rooms, but must be accompanied at all times. Pupils must report to their House Parent and sign in once they get back. Pupils are expected to be back by 22.00 at the latest. This is earlier for the younger boarders. At the beginning of half terms boarders are welcome back at 6pm, however they can agree with their House Parent prior to the half term to return at 16.00 if needed.

Pupils must tidy and pack away their rooms thoroughly at the end of each term. There is storage space in school for full boarders’ belongings, but these must be securely packed and clearly labelled, and then sensibly packed into the storage cupboards, or as directed by The House Parent.

On the last day of term there will be a time set aside for your child to gather together their overnight things and ensure their room is tidy. They will be free to leave after their House Parent has checked and passed their room.

At the end of the summer term (June/July) all Year 13 boarders need to pack up their rooms fully. It is not possible to store luggage in the school over the summer until the start of university courses.

On exeat weekends all boarders must leave school on the Friday at 13.05 to allow them to catch the 14.00 train to London Waterloo if required. Your child can return from 18.00 on Sunday (in exceptional circumstances they may be able to return earlier, but this would have to arranged with the House Parent, so that there is someone here to be responsible for them).

Anyone spending holidays or exeats at places other than their own home needs to ensure that their House Parent has written confirmation from their parent or guardian (including an address and contact details), and , if appropriate, a written invitation from the people they will be staying with.

More information about boarding routines and requirements is available in the Boarding Handbook.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Guardians

UK legislation (The Children’s Act 1989) requires pupils in boarding schools to have official guardians, outside of school staff. Therefore your child must have an adult guardian (over the age of 24) resident in the UK, or be en-rolled with a guardianship agency in the UK.

Your child will need to be able to stay with their guardian (or a host family arranged through a guardianship agency) during our exeat weekends, half-term breaks and, if necessary, the school holidays. The guardian must also be able to take responsibility for your child if they need to come out of school at any other time, due to serious medical problems, disciplinary issues, or if, in an extreme situation, the school was required to close for any period of time.

It is important that the guardian is someone that both you and your child can communicate with easily. This could be a family friend or relative if they are able to take on this responsibility but there are also guardianship agencies who are experienced at providing support and help for overseas students and their families.

Professional guardians arrange host families for pupils and co-ordinate their travel, communicate with the school and attend parents meetings on the parents’ behalf. For practical reasons it is recommended that the guardian is not located anymore than 3 hours drive time from Leweston. It is expected that if you cannot accompany your child on their arrival (for the first time) at Leweston, that your guardian should accompany them in your place. Should this not be possible then the House Parent will phone your child’s guardian during the first weekend of term to ensure that all necessary information has been communicated to them, as the person responsible for your child whilst they are in the UK. The School cannot advise parents on their choice of guardian but below is a list of Guardians that are currently working with us: And a list of ccredited Guardianship companies can be found via the Aegis (the Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students) website http://www.aegisuk.net/.

EALThe EAL department is here to make sure our international students reach their potential. Students benefit from EAL lessons in many ways. They may use them to assist progress in their main subjects and extra support is often beneficial to improve essay writing and research skills. Many students study for internationally recognised examinations such as Cambridge Preliminary or First Certificate or the British Council’s IELTS. All of these are available as one year courses. These language skills will boost performance in other subjects.

A specialist EAL tutor is also available one night a week in the boarding houses to assist the House Parent with pastoral care and integration.

EAL PATHWAYSYears 7, 8 and 9Students in these years are assessed on arrival and a decision is made about the best pathway. Some students will use EAL for support with their timetabled lessons while others will study for Cambridge Preliminary or First Certificate examinations.

Year 10Students in Year 10 can select English as their foreign language option and study for a Cambridge First or Advanced in one year. This is an internationally recognised qualification which also builds academic language skills for other timetabled subjects.

Year 11Students in Year 11 receive tailored support for the GCSE English Language examination. This is compulsory for all students studying in the UK and must be passed at Grade 4 or above.

Year 12Students in Year 12 prepare for the IELTS examination required by all English medium universities. Depending on a student’s level they may take this course in six months, one year or 18 months.

Year 13Students may be finishing their IELTS course or may choose to use EAL for support in their A level subjects. In addition support is given with writing university applications.

For further information on EAL Lessons please visit our website.
