The smartphone market has been good like never before with the market receptive of budget range and expensive range with equal fervour and enthusiasm. In the year 2015, the Indian smartphones market is expected to further consolidate its position, before emerging as the world's second biggest market in 2016. The emerging strength of the smartphone mar-ket has also witnessed a new growing trend

of buying smartphones through the online retail sector. The online retailers have man-aged to reach out to the Indian consumer in a big way with attractive price offerings. The online retail sector witnessed the smartphones being exclusively distributed only through retail channels. It began when Motorola re-entered the India market by partnering exclusively with Flipkart to sell Moto G in February last year, followed by other devices like Moto E and Moto X. Motorola has found the partnership to be very useful as Motorola claimed to have sold more than one million phones in five months, to become one of the top five handset makers in the country. This trend

of online retail partnership was followed by other smartphone vendors like Samsung, Micromax, Karbonn, LG and Lenovo with Flipkart & other e-commerce players. The year 2014 also saw newer brands, espe-cially of Chinese origin like Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus and Vivo, entering Indian market. The biggest name in this online retail phenomenon has been the much awaited launch of Xiaomi, often referred to as the 'Apple of China'. Xiaomi tied up with Flip-kart exclusively in India for distribution and has adopted a flash sales model. The Indian consumers have taken up very posi-tively to this concept with the smartphone being lapped up within seconds. Xiaomi

plans to launch several other smartphones, Mibands and MiTV to India in 2015 and seem to be excited about their plans in India. Xiaomi has within this short period managed to make it to the list of top five smartphone vendors, which includes long standing leaders like Samsung and Apple. Another Chinese smartphone maker, OnePlus has also adopted the same online distribution model. OnePlus has started retailing its samrtphone on Amazon India through an invite-only system. The offline retailers have been upset with this trend and have been vocal about this changing tendency in the market. There has been a definitive loss for the offline retailers across India as the customers have joined the online bandwagon. It has also become difficult to compete with the on-line offerings. The online retail platforms has the distinct advantage of allowing the vendors to launch its products across the country on Day 1, which is not possible through offline retail, especially in tier-2, tier-3 and tier-4 towns, since it takes time for a product to physically reach out to a retail outlet. The biggest advantage of the online retail is that e-commerce platforms offer competitive pricing of the smartphones. The end-customer has the opportunity to check out the various products offered along with its features and prices instan-taneously by sitting in front of his laptop or mobile. The consumers get swayed towards the online retail platforms as the consumers are offered attractive bundled offers ranging from discounts to cashbacks and freebies, along with the handset.The vendors have also taken up on this distribution model with great enthusiasm as the online distribution models saves them a great deal of money in terms of setting up a physical distribution network with brick and motor building along with other manpower. This kind of elimina-tion of distributor and retailer also offers savings on the sales. This saves them a significant amount on the total cost of the end-product which helps them in offering the smartphones at lower price range. The smartphones are able to provide Rs 3000-5000 offers to the consumer which acts as a big draw for the consumer to seek the online retail option over the offline retailer. With the current trend of the online retail growth, India is set to become the world’s fastest growing e-commerce market. This has been facilitated not only by the

increased retail investment in the inter-net space but also the increasing reach of internet among the Indian consumers. The internet users in India have gone up from 50 million in 2007 to 300 million in 2014. In 2014, smart phone shipments doubled to 80 million from a year-ago period. The prospect of connecting 1.24 billion people to the internet may be an opportunity in itself. But what analysts are excited about is the prospect of selling products and ser-vices to this digital population. Investment banks believe India is on way to becoming one of the largest internet markets in the world, with implications for consumers and investors. Offering lower prices will not be viable in the long term. Despite luring customers in the initial stages, lower prices won't be able to retain customers in the long run. In India, online retail is less than a percent of total retail market while globally 8-10 per cent of total retail is online retail. The effect of online-only sales and the al-legedly disproportionate discounts offered by e- commerce platforms like Flipkart, Amazon India, Snapdeal was also evident on offline retailers. Smartphone sales in offline retail have been hit by discounts offered by online marketplaces, such as Flipkart, Amazon and Snapdeal during the highly attractive festive season. The offline retailers found a big slump during this festive season as all the online retail platforms ran highly attractive shopping

festival. According to reports, at present the online platform accounts for 12-14% of total smartphone sales in India. The growth of the online retail surge has pushed the traditional offline retailers into a corner. They need to take stock of the changing situation and need to plan inno-vative strategies to keep the consumers in-terested in their product offerings. Several of the retail associations and their trade bodies have been voicing strong protest against the predatory pricing offered by their online retailers. The offline retailers have begun threatening the smartphone brands that they’ll boycott these products in their stores. Several offline electronic chains like Croma, Future Group, Planet M, Next, Reliance Retail and Sangeetha Mobiles reportedly refused to sell An-droid One handsets in protest of Google’s decision to initially launch the handsets through these e-commerce platforms. The smartphone vendors have also taken up a review of the present situation. They have realized that the traditional offline retail still accounts for a significant part of their sales. So, the vendors have taken up strong steps like asking e-commerce players to rein in discounts, stopping fresh sales until they get a price undertaking from these platforms, and launching offline exclusive phones among others. Several companies also issued consumer advisories against e-commerce players this year, warn-ing users against buying its devices from these platforms. The brick and mortar retailers will have to reinvent its marketing strategy to keep up with this changing market situation. The offline retail space itself is becoming highly competitive and it is becoming imperative for the retailers to work out an interesting business model. The traditional retailer will have to provide a refreshing shopping experience to the customer beyond the norm of selling the product. The biggest advantage the offline retailer has over the online retailer is the multi-sensory buying experience it can offer over the rival online counterpart. They need to develop a last-ing bond with the consumer to reiterate a return of the consumer loyalty. Keeping in mind the size of mobile users in India and Internet usage through mobile, the smartphone market will continue to see a favourable run for a long time and it is up to the retailers to play the cards righ offering a right price offering for the consumer.
