Indirect Object Pronouns

Remember that direct objects answer the questions who Or what about the verb.

Remember that direct object pronouns are used to avoid repetition.

Indirect Object Pronouns

Notice the direct object in the following sentence.

Él tiene ropa de invierno.

He has winter clothes.

Indirect Object Pronouns

Notice that the direct object is replaced by a direct object pronoun.

Él tiene ropa de invierno.

Él la tiene.

Remember that the direct object pronoun preceeds the verb.

Él la tiene.

Indirect Object Pronouns

Remember, when there are 2 verbs the direct object pronoun can come before the 1st verb.

Él puede jugar al tenis.Él lo puede jugar.

Remember, when there are 2 verbs the direct object pronoun can also be attached to the infinitive.

Él puede jugar al tenis.Él puede jugarlo.

Indirect Object Pronouns

Indirect objects are nouns that answer the questions to whom/what or for whom/ what.

Yo compro una jarra a mi amiga.

Indirect Object Pronouns

Singular indirect object pronouns:

me = me

te = you (familiar)

le = you(formal), him,her

Indirect Object Pronouns

Plural indirect object pronouns:

nos= us

os = you (familiar)

les = you, them

Indirect Object Pronouns

Note: the indirect object pronouns are the same as the direct object pronouns with the exception of le and les.

Indirect Object Pronouns

Indirect object pronouns can replace or accompany indirect objects.

Yo le compro una jarra.

Yo le compro una jarra a mi amiga.

Indirect Object Pronouns

The placement of indirect object pronouns is exactly the same as direct object pronouns.

Indirect Object Pronouns

When there is 1 verb in a sentence the indirect object is placed before the verb.

Ana le da el libro.

Indirect Object Pronouns When there are 2 verbs in a

sentence the indirect object can be placed before the verb, or be attached to the infinitive or gerund (ando/ iendo forms).

Ana le puede dar el libro.Ana puede darle el libro.Ana está dándole el libro.

Indirect Object Pronouns

Le and les may refer to different indirect objects, so the following construction is used at the end of the sentence to clarify:

a + name/noun/pronoun

To add emphasis the following construction is used at the beginning of the sentence.

Replace the indirect object with a pronoun.

Yo doy una pluma a tí.I am giving you a pen.

Yo te doy una pluma.

Yo te doy una pluma a tí.

Ana da el regalo a su abuela.Ana gives the gift to her grandmother.

Ana le da el regalo.

Ana le da el regalo a su abuela.
