Indirect Object Pronouns

• We’ve seen three types of pronouns so far:– Subject: yo, tú, él…– Reflexive: me, te, se…– Direct object: me, te, lo,

la…

• Now, we are going to look at one more type: indirect objects.

The Indirect Object Pronoun answers the question:

“For whom or to whom is an action done?”

I bought the cake for my mom.I bought it for her.

She spoke to the teacher for me.She spoke to him for me.

What does a indirect object pronoun do?

An indirect object pronoun takes the place of an indirect object. For example:

Are you giving the truck to Ana?

Yes, I am giving the truck to her.

The Spanish equivalents are as follows:

• Indirect objects are used together with verbs such as:– Dar (give)– Enviar (send)– Comprar (buy)– Mandar (send)– Decir (tell)– Regalar (give a gift)

In English the indirect object pronoun is placed after the verb. In Spanish it is usually put before a the conjugated verb.

In a negative sentence in Spanish the indirect object is placed in front of the conjugated verb. It can not be placed in front of “no”.

Notice the placement of the indirect object pronouns in a sentence with an infinitive construction in Spanish:

¿Quieres mandarme el dinero?

Sí, te quiero mandar el dinero.

Sí, quiero mandarte el dinero.

The indirect object pronoun can be placed either before a conjugated verb or after the infinitive.
