It is tremendous to see the school uniform being consistently worn with appropriate footwear and hair tied back neatly. Many of our programmes have commenced or are soon to commence. Literacy intervention from Pre Primary – Year 7 is now underway and children who require additional support are receiving it either once, twice or sometimes three times per day. Busy Bee Calling all parents, friends, grandparents and community members who have time to spare this Saturday, 8 th March. We are having a Busy Bee to tidy up, paint, reinvigorate, beautify and create order in our school. Teachers are desperate for helping hands so if you have time and you want to make a difference to the school, please come along between 8am-12 on Saturday (bring your gloves, rake, shovel or anything else that may be of use!) Lunch time clubs have commenced and children have a wonderful array of activities to choose from most days of the week. Activities range from colouring-in/craft, to Circus skills, soccer, football, media and music clubs. If your child finds it difficult to make friends or appears to be having difficulty in the playground, remind them of the lunch time clubs they can choose to attend each day. Peer Mediators Mrs T has spent two days training peer mediators and today they started their important role in the playground. Peer mediators are able to help solve simple playground problems. They wear brightly coloured vests and they were introduced to the children at assembly on Friday. Remind your child to look for the Peer mediators if they need help in the playground. Student Leaders Congratulations to the 28 elected Councillors and Faction Captains who were presented with their badges on Friday. On Wednesday, the leaders begin the first part of their training in leadership, which continues with an overnight camp in a few weeks and includes attending a National Young Leaders Conference at the Convention Centre. We have received very generous funding for the Leadership Programme and the funding enables us to purchase a t-shirt for the Leaders to acknowledge their role and responsibility in school. Assembly Thank you to the parents who attended assembly on Friday. We were pleased with our first effort to have both schools at the one assembly. Throughout the year there will be improvements to the format as we continue to showcase the innovation occurring inside classrooms. A special thank you to Ms Lattin’s Year 3 class and Mrs Frith’s Year 1 class for being brave enough to volunteer to host the first assembly. Hari Indonesia From Pre Primary to Year 7, we will be involved in a day of celebrations, new experiences and opportunities to stimulate our minds and our tastebuds! Look out for more information inside this newsletter regarding the special day on 28 th March. Bike Repair Shop Another of our new programmes this year is the introduction of a Bike Repair Shop. If you have any unused bikes or scooters that your children have outgrown, Mr Whiskin and Mr McDowell would love to take them off your hands. Very soon you will be able to bring your bike to school to have it repaired by groups of children who are involved in the programme. Please bring your preloved bike to the CILC room. Monday 24th March Puppet Show about Reducing Waste and

CLASSROOM NEWS

As part of 'Random Act of Kindness Week' week we created Kindness Boomerangs in J3 (the message being that if we are kind to someone, they will be kind to someone and so on until eventually someone will be kind to you, hence the boomerang.) We drew our boomerangs and wrote a sentence on how we would be kind, which ranged from picking up peoples litter, holding the door open for the elderly to helping someone when they are hurt. We watched a really nice video to support our learning - http://w w w . y o u t u b e . c o m / w a t c h ?v=nwAYpLVyeFU

J3 S12 S12

S12 had an amazing fashion show with all the characters we could find in our class. Here are just a few of the outstanding talents in S12. Mr Mangano even photo bombed :)

S 1 2 w a s fortunate enough to have Laura and her Dad show us their unusual pet, a snake. We found i t v e r y informative and h a d m a n y questions. We were able to talk about reptiles, how snakes grow and

many other aspects of having such an unusual pet. We even got to touch it and it wasn't slimy, which surprised many of us. Thank you Laura and her Dad for this wonderful experience.

There will be some Pre loved Baby and Toddler clothing for sale in the new at 8.30 a.m. in the undercover area on Thursday 6th March and again on Wednesday 12th March outside the playgroup at 8.45 am.

On Monday 24th March, the Constable Care Puppet

Challis Primary School and the Early Childhood Education Centre will be part of a World Record attempt. We’re going for a world record for the longest “Get Well Ribbon”! On Friday 7

the Get Well Ribbon. All we ask is that every child makes a gold coin donation to have their name put on the ribbon. All proceeds go to the Children’s Leukaemia and Cancer Research Foundation. Michael Morgan Deputy Principal

KEEP THE FLAME ALIVE

Here are some of the many ideas I received from the students at Challis on how they can show kindness every day. Andrew age 5 ‘Look after the animals’ Dylan age 6 ‘Clean my room’ Maddisyn age 6 ‘Do jobs for my Mum’ Tayla age 5 ‘Wash the dishes’ “What happens if they don’t show kindness?” - Blade age 6 asked Jaxon age 6. He replied “It wont come back to them.” Mrs Liane Taylor, Teacher

HARI INDONESIA INCURSION

Tuesday 4th

March

2014

Dear Parent / Guardian,

On Friday 28th

March (Week 8) Challis Schools will be holding Hari Indonesia to celebrate the learning of Indonesian at

this school. All Challis students from Pre-Primary to Year 7 will be involved where they will participate in different

activities throughout the day. Kindergarten children will not be joining us on this day.

These activities include:

Making decorative fans

The making of an Indonesian dessert called ‘Pisang dan nanas goreng’ (fried banana and pineapple)

A bilingual puppet show called ‘Cerita Dari Hutan’ or ‘The Jungle Book’ performed by the Carousel Theatre

A traditional Indonesian dance workshop (presented by the internationally recognised Indonesian Dance Company

‘Suara Indonesia’)

‘Pisang dan nanas goreng’ is a traditional dessert dish served across Indonesia. Banana and pineapple will be dipped

into a batter and then shallow fried. Students will have either chocolate sauce or cream on the side. If you know of

recent changes to your child’s food allergies or have not yet completed a medical form for your child, please fill out a

medical form at the school office.

Hari Indonesia is going to be a fantastic opportunity for students at Challis to participate in activities that celebrate the

diversity of Indonesia. This is the first cultural event that both schools have joined and celebrated together. All Primary

School students will be joined with a buddy class from the Junior School and new friendships will be formed in this

culturally enriched setting.

Please make sure that your child brings recess and lunch as it will not be provided on the day.

To cover the costs of this incursion, it is requested that each child bring $5.00 along with the permission form to their

classroom teacher over the next few weeks of term. All money and permission forms are due back by Monday 21st

March. All students will also receive a free Indonesian show bag on the day.

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the school on 9399 3255.

Regards,

Ibu Siobhan Holland
