Just over 100 children, 7 staff and 8 parents enjoyed the camp from Wednesday 5 th to 7 th September last week. The weather presented some challenges with the howling winds throwing the first night into darkness, due to fallen power lines throughout the region. The entire camp was without heating or water for hot showers and I commend the resilience of my staff and their ability to maintain calmness and control when the situation could have become hazardous. I contacted emergency management several times that evening and was reassured that keeping the children at the camp was the safest thing to do. The weather improved the next day and by lunchtime power had been restored and teachers and students persevered and were able to proceed with most of the activities as planned. Under advice from the Department, the Camp did not have their day at Wilson’s Prom as the wind gusts were forecasted to be over 120km/hr. The children enjoyed all the activities based at the camp, such as the canoeing, the adventure bridge, jail break and particularly the disco at night, dancing with the rock stars. They all returned home safe and well on Friday afternoon at about 5.15pm, tired; muddy but talking very excitedly. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all of the following teachers, student teachers and parents who attended the camp and provided fantastic round the clock support to our students. The commitment of the staff at camps is incredible. An enormous amount of time and planning goes into organising a camp and on behalf of the school community I would like to congratulate Virginia Wallace (Level 3 coordinator) and the Year 3 and 4 teachers for ensuring everything ran like clockwork and for facilitating such an engaging and memorable camping experience for every child who attended. Firstly to Virginia Wallace for her outstanding organisation and execution of the camp, to the teachers for their support to Virginia: Malcolm Dow, Anita Frankel, Rosanna Caruso, Angela Sozzi, Zaim Zeneli and Camille Alexander (student teacher) and secondly to the parents who also went: Andrew Ajani, Jo D’Cruz, Jo Gatehouse, Robyn Fox, Janine Sheean, Peter Singer, AJ Masefau, and Cathy Milward –Bason. The camp would not be the success it was without all of the support we received from our parent cohort. I have been sent a number of emails and phone calls from the parents who attended the camp stating how impressed they were with the level of care demonstrated by the staff and the management of the students in the face of some difficult challenges. PFA Chocolate Drive Our wonderful PFA continues to work tirelessly and with such commitment to fundraise for our school and by now you would have all received chocolates in the school bag to sell as a fundraiser for the school. A huge thank you to Robbie Fox, Jill Davies, Abbey Nash and Emma Guymer for unpacking all the boxes and redistributing them to all the classes with the help of some Level 4 students. Dear Parents, Level 3 Camp What an adventure our Year 3 and 4 students had last week as they participated in the camping program at Camp Rumbug in Foster, South Gippsland. Acting Principal’s report continued … Somers Camp Eighteen of our 40 Grade 6 students have been selected to participate in the 9 day Somers Camp over this week and next. This represents a fantastic opportunity to make new friends from other schools, to learn about survival in the bush and to meet some personal challenges whilst on the ropes course, flying fox; archery, and canoeing as a few examples. The children were highly excited and were farewelled by a large contingent of Level 4 students. Friends and family may visit the camp on Sunday and I will try to also get down to Somers over the weekend. I recall listening to the stories from the Year 6s who graduated two years ago who consistently commented that Somers was a highlight of that year. Yoga Day Monday 17th September Connie Apostolos, our Teaching and Learning leader for this term has organised a Yoga session to be experienced by the whole school on Monday 17th September. Every class will have an individual session and the benefits of yoga for children’s brain and muscle development have been widely publicised. I am sure all of the children will thoroughly enjoy this activity. Revamped sick bay room Have you been past our sick bay recently? Thanks to Campbell Dixon, it has been revamped, remodelled,

we have a washing machine and dryer in next to the sink, a new bookshelf and very soon thanks to the artistic flair of the OOSCH staff a bright and colourful new mural on the wall. So the next time the children have to visit sick bay it will be a much more pleasant experience. Best wishes We all wish Katie Wallman well for her forthcoming surgery and a speedy recovery. We look forward to seeing her back in her role at OOSCH as soon as possible. End of term arrangements Early Dismissal for the Last Day of Term 3 The end of term 3 is almost upon us! Please note that there will be no whole school assembly next Wednesday 19th September. The final assembly will be held at approximately 1:50pm on Friday 21st September. All children will be dismissed from this assembly at 2:30pm to begin their term three holiday break. Please note this early dismissal time. Term 4 will commence on Monday 8th October. Have a wonderful week. Warm regards,

Rochelle Cukier

PARENTS AND FRIENDS FOR ARMADALE (PFA) Hi everyone, PFA Meeting – Friday 14th September at 9am There is a PFA meeting tomorrow morning in the staff room – all parents & friends welcome! Cadbury Chocolate Fundraiser Yes, it’s that time of year again! Once again, Robbie Fox will be co-ordinating this fabulous fundraiser for the school. Boxes were handed out to all families yesterday, so please start selling and support this important fundraiser for the school. Each box costs $60.00. Looking ahead ... Some term 4 dates for the diary: Friday 19th October – Healthy Breakfast We had to cancel this last year because of uncertainty over the completion of the school hall and various other factors. So, this year’s will be bigger and better than ever! It’s an absolutely wonderful morning, so put the date in your diary now and we will provide more details closer to the date. Friday 26th October – Level 4 cocktail party Level 4 Class Reps will be in touch with all level 4

parents regarding the details for the final cocktail party of the year. Friday 23rd November – Family Night This was a huge event last year, and promises to be even better in 2012. We’ve made it in late November this year, as most people’s diaries get out of control in December. So, diarise it now, and all details will be provided early in term 4. Expressions of interest - PFA Co-Presidents Our roles as co-Presidents come to an end this year. We are hoping to appoint two new Presidents ASAP to ensure a smooth handover. We are asking for expressions of interest so if you want to know more about this fulfilling, valued and varied role, or know someone who may be interested, please contact us. It really is an important role within the school, so please have a think about it and consider whether you would like to contribute in this fun and fulfilling way. Please don’t hesitate to come and talk to us at any time! Have a great week everyone.

If you want more than one box per family or child, you can collect from me (Robyn Fox) in the Hall outside the PFA office (next to OOSCH) between 3.30pm - 3.45pm only. Premiers’ Reading Challenge Congratulations to all of the children who successfully completed the challenge. Overall we had 164 students who successfully completed the challenge. We also had 14 students who read the maximum number of 100 books – what a fantastic effort. Thanks to all of the parents who helped support their children in completing the challenge. Special certificates will be awarded to all of the children who completed the challenge at an assembly in Term 4. Extra Play Areas We have some good news about our play space. By putting extra teachers on yard duty we have been able to extend the areas in which the students can play on Monday, Wednesday and Friday recesses, when we have a combined recess for all students. They will be able to use the Fairfax Circle and other areas around our new hall, as well as areas adjacent to our Level 2 and Level 4 classrooms.

Nude Food A little reminder to all parents that we are a ‘Nude Food’ School, meaning that we strongly encourage our students to bring all of their food in reusable containers, preferably labelled with their names. This is part of the school’s Sustainability Policy. We recognise that this may sometimes be a little inconvenient but like most things, once you get into the habit, it is a lot easier. If everyone does their bit to reduce the rubbish coming into the school, our school environment will be a much cleaner one. Here are a couple of links that might help you with good Nude Food ideas from The Kitchen Playground and Honest to Goodness. Malcolm Dow Acting Assistant Principal
