TREE PROTECTION NOTESExcept with the further written consent of the responsible authority, no vegetation(other than that indicated on the endorsed plan or exempt from planning permissionunder the provisions of the (local planning scheme) shall be damaged, removed, destroyed or lopped.
A suitably qualified arborist must approve and supervise any activity within thecalculated tree protection zone (TPZ) of any tree. Any root severance with the(TPZ) must be undertaken to their satisfaction using a clean sharp and sterilisedpruning saw. All and any excavations within the (TPZ) of retained trees must beundertaken by hand or by approved non-destructive techniques suitable in thevicinity of trees.
Any underground service installation with a (TPZ) must be bored to a depth of atleast 600mm.
Unless otherwise agreed in writing by the responsible authority, prior to thecommencement of works (including demolition) tree protection fencing must beestablished around trees. You must contact councils development planning arboristonce the tree protection fencing is erected so than an inspection of the fencing canbe carried out. Once installed and inspected the fenced Tree Protection Zone areamust be maintained until the conclusion of works to the satisfaction of theresponsible authority, and meet the following requirements:
ExtentFenced tree protection zones are provided to the maximum extent of the TPZ as isreasonably practical for each tree where it occurs within the subject property.
Weed control & MulchingAny weeds located within the tree protection zone are to be removed and the areamulched with 100mm of composted coarse grade woodchips.AS4970 - The area within the TPZ should be mulched. The mulch must bemaintained to a depth of 50-100 mm using material that complies with AS 4454.Where the existing landscape within the TPZ is to remain unaltered (e.g. gardenbeds or turf), mulch may not be required.
IrrigationThe area within the fenced protection area must be irrigated on a weekly basisduring dry conditions in the summer months with 1 litre of clean water for every 1 cmof trunk girth measured at the soil/trunk interface. The amount of irrigation should be proportional to the percentage of TPZ areaoccurring within the subject site.
Trunk protectionTrunk protection devices must be installed on Trees if tree protection fencing isremovedTrunk Protection materials may include the following materials:* Purpose build steel tree guards* Boards and padding that will prevent damage to bark. Boards are to be strapped totrees, not nailed or screwed.
Ground protectionIf Tree Protection Fencing is removed, Ground protection must be installed whereworks occur within the Tree Protection Zone and the native subsoil is exposed.Ground protection is considered to be a material that displaces point loads on thesoil and it may include:Existing concrete or asphalt pavement, or Rumble Boards, or
Track mats, or
Pinned GeotextileGeotextile fabric pinned to ground and overlaid with material such as crushed rock, aggregate, sand or soil. To be removed upon completion of works access
Geotextile fabric pinned to ground and overlaid with material such as crushed rock, aggregate, sand or soil. To be removed upon completion of works access
Fencingi) Tree Protection fences with a minimum height of 1.2 to 1.5 metres and of chainmesh or the like. Fence with 1.8 metre posts (e.g. treated pine or the like) supportsevery 3-4 metres and a top line of high visibility plastic hazard tape must be erectedaround the perimeter of the designated tree protection zone.ii) The posts must be strong enough to sustain knocks from on-site excavationequipment.iii) The fences must not be removed or relocated without prior consent of thesupervising arborist.iv) Canopy and limb protection must be provided in accordance with the guidelinesdetailed in AS4970 Protection of Trees on Development Sites.
SignageFixed signs are to be provided on all visible sides of the tree protection fencingstating-"Tree Protection Zone - No entry, removal or realignment without permission
from the supervising arborist"
Remedial WorksTo be determined by the supervising Arborist during scheduled site inspections.Initial site inspection to examine tree protection fencing, and every 6 months, or asrequired or requested during construction activities.
PruningIf required, all remedial pruning works performed on any tree will be in accordancewith Australian Standards 4373:2007, Pruning of Amenity Trees, and it must beperformed by a trained and competent arborist who has a thorough knowledge oftree physiology and pruning methods.
Landscaping* Once the dwelling construction and all site level changes are complete, removal ofthe TPZ fence and ground protection will allow landscaping to proceed.* No skid loaders or heavy machinery allowed on exposed soil in TPZ area.* No excavation permitted in the TPZ area. Landscaping to consist of permeablepavement. Footpath pavement and sub-base material must be porous and also beinstalled above existing natural soil level.* No trees and or vigorous, fast growing woody perennials should be installed withinthe TPZ as part of the landscaping.
Paving systems - Sympathetic construction methodsA ‘no dig’ type (See fig.1) of pavement should be considered where the pavement isplaced on top of existing natural grade. This would minimise root disturbance andsoil compaction. Segmented paving for pedestrian use is suitable if laid at existinggrade after the removal of organic matter. This system can be adapted to usegranitic sand and stepping stones with less substantial edging treatments.
Figure 1. The ‘no dig’ style places the pavement section on top of the naturalexisting grade. This can reduce root disturbance and compaction. Extra reinforcingin the pavement and use of geotextile under the base material can be used toincrease the stability of the pavement (Matheny & Clark, 1998).

Soil Preparation:Crushed rock concrete spillage and any other materialrestrictive to plant groth (e.g. large rocks) shall be removedfrom thr site in any planting beds and semi-advanced trees. All trees to be removed shall be stump ground and all rubbish/vegetative spoil to be removed from site. Existing top soil inplanting areas is to be preserved so that it does not recieveadditional compaction from site machinery and so that no rubbleor building supplies are stored in these areas. No imported topsoil is to be used within the root zones of trees to be protected.Ant preparation of existing soil for planting within these areasis to be done by hand only. Holes (e.g. as the result of planremoval) and uneven soil levels may be patched using topsoilas specified below.
Any imported topsoil is to be free of weeds, rubble and othermaterials damaging to plant growth and is to be of a mediumtecture (sandy loam) with a pH OF 6.0-7.0. Top soil is to be laidover a prepared sub-base which has had any materials damagingto plant growth (e.g. rubble and large rocks) removed spread to theappropriate depth and cultivated into the existing site soil to aminimum depth of 150mm. Imported top soil is to be lightly anduniformly compacted in 150mm layers to a minimum depth of 100mmon lawn areas and 300mm on excavated planting beds.
Weed Removal:All weeds shall be thoroughly removed. All vegetative material includingroots and rhizomes of non-woody perennials and woody suckering weeds,is to be removed or appropriately controlled using chemical means. The stumps of non-suckering woody perennials are to be stump ground. All vegetative material shall be appropriately disposed of off site in amanner which will not their re-establishment elesewhere.
Any chemical controls are to be used in accordance with manufacture'sinstructions and standard occupational health and safety procedures.Care must be taken to ensure that all trees to be retained are not damagedduring weed removal. PlantingPlanting shall be carried out using accepted horticultural practices with allplants conforming to the species size and guantities indicated on the landscapeplan and plant schedule.
Plants shall be thoroughly soaked through immersion in water prior to plantingand if the planting soil is very dry then the planting hole is to be filled with waterand allowed to drain completely. ALl plants shall be appropriately hardened off inthe nursery. Use plants with the following characteristics: Large healthy rootsystems with no evidence of root curl or pot bound restriction or damage, vigorous, well established, free from disease and pests and of goof form, consistent withthe species of variety.
Planting holes for shrubs and groundcovers are to be of minimum size 75mm largerthan the planting pot in all directions. Semi-advanced tree planting holes are to bethe same depth as the rootball and 2-3 times its diameter, with the top of the rootballbeing at grade. A 75mm high berm is to be constructed at edge of rootball to hold water. All plant are to be thoroughly watered after planting and slow release fertiliser added atthe quantities specified by the manufacturer.
Timber EdgesProvide 75 x 25mm treated pine edges to all borders between gravel mulchpaths, lawn interfaces and garden beds using 75x25x300mm long treatedpine stakes at 1200mm maximum centres. An additional stake is to beprovided at joins in the plinth.
SPECIFICATION NOTE:MulchMulch is to be supplied to all garden beds and is to bean organic type laid to a minimum depth of 75mm,consisting of fine dark coloured chipped or shredded pinebark or similar with 80% of particles in the size range10 to 20mm in plan and 5mm in thickness. No particlesare to exceed 30mm in plan.
Mulch shall be free of damaging matter such as soil, weedsand sticks and is to be stockpiled and thoroughly weatheredprior to delivery. All mulch is to be sloped towards plant stemsbut shall be kept back 100mm from the stems of all plants toprevent collar rot.
Gravel PathGravel path to be installed at existing or above grade to maintainexistign trees. Refer to tree protection notes.
A gravel path is to be installed where shown comprising of a 50mmlayer of gravel (Tuscan toppings or similar) over a base course of75mm deep gently compacted fine crushed rock. Each layer, includingthe subgrade is to be appropriatly compacted.

Synthetic LawnSynthetic lawn to be installed at existing or above grade to maintain existingtrees. Refer to treee protection notes. Supply and install synthetic lawn toareas as shown. Lay 100mm crushed rock base compacted to 15-20mm belowfinsihed height of surrounding edging/paving. Install to manufactur's directions thentop dress synthetic lawn with a fine, dry ecofill silica sand to a thickness of 15-20mm.Use a broom to sweep in and brush grass blades striaght.
Repair/Restoration of damaged Nature-StripsNature strips are to be restored to current grades with any depressions filled withtopsoil to the specifications above and lightly compacted in 150mm layers. Areas arethen to be re-seeded using an appropriate and matching turf and the area fenced offto allow the re-establishment of lawn. Re-seeded areas are to be well irrigated andthe area supplied with a slow release fertiliser at the quantities recommended bythe manufacture.
Any areas of lawn which have failed to germinate (achieve an evenly green 95%covering of a consistent height) are to be re-seeded within one month of orignalsowing date.
