Just a short drive from Oxford at Nuneham Courtney, is a bar and restaurantdefinitely worth a visit on a regular basis, ideal for family, friends or an intimatemeal for two.

Cockadoo in Nuneham Courtenay is a restaurant bursting with great food, a warmatmosphere, impeccable service and a wide range of customers. When we visited on abusy Saturday night, there was a party of 18 year olds celebrating their coming of age, pockets of families with children and couples enjoying a cosy night out.

But we had gone to eat, and, boy did we eat! Our starters was a banquet on its own, including Spring roll, Braised pork spare ribs, Chicken satay, Fish cake, Fresh mints rollwith minced chicken, Golden bags and Chicken toast and pickled salad. The dishes wereelegantly presented with such detail including carved vegetables in the shapes offlowers making the dish both appealing to the eye and stomach.

For our mains, we decided on Mongolian Lamb, fried with garlic, coriander, dried chili, shallots and spring onion and stir-fried river king prawn in golden mountain sauce, served with ginger, onion, curry leaves and shrimp. Both dishes sounded exciting andvibrant and they most definitely had the flavours to die for. The meat in the lamb dishwas cooked to perfection, with the sauce so delicately marinated to bring about flavoursof pure indulgence. We also indulged ourselves in the Sweet and Sour Chicken, CrispyAromatic Duck, Massaman Beef curry and accompanied our dishes with the Housespecial fried rice which offered an abundance of additional flavours to accompany ourvery high quality dishes. We also squeezed in some stir fried noodles with sprint onionsand beansprouts – don’t ask me how!

As our table buckled under the weight of the food, we couldn’t have been happier.

The food and the atmosphere combined, left us wanting to return again, not only tosample from the extensive menu but to allow ourselves to experience this wonderfulrestaurant.

Owner Allan Yeung is rightly proud of his restaurant. “We have a lot of satisfied andregular customers coming to the restaurant. We have a lot of live entertainment andtribute acts – Kylie was here in October!”

So make sure you book your table for Cockadoo – it’s a fabulous night out!

For a club with a rich past, London Welsh RFC have been busy creating newhistory at the Kassam Stadium this year, such has been the Exiles’ rapid rise fromChampionship contenders to Aviva Premiership approval, and its adopted Oxfordhome has borne witness to it all.

May 30 was the date London Welsh introduced itself to the Kassam and the people ofOxford, as the club completed the second leg of its Championship final victory over theCornish Pirates.

It was a glorious night that will live long in the memory of the club and all who werethere, culminating in joyous scenes as captain Jonathan Mills hoisted aloft theChampionship trophy and the champagne flowed.

It brought to an end a Championship season encapsulating nine long months of blood, sweat and toil, and which ultimately ended with the club collecting its first piece ofsilverware since winning the Courage League Division 5 title in 1994/95.

It had been a long wait, but it signified a new beginning for a club which famouslyprovided seven of the British & Irish Lions team which conquered the All Blacks in 1971,including captain and club president John Dawes, JPR Williams, Gerald Davies, MervynDavies and the current managing director John Taylor.

However, the club’s biggest fight arguably came off the pitch, as a month later it wonits appeal to take its rightful place in the Aviva Premiership, with the Kassam Stadiumconfirmed as its new home ground.

Under head coach Lyn Jones the club have been defying the doubters ever since.Written off as relegation fodder, with some pundits even going as far as to predict thatthe Exiles would not win a game, London Welsh have already proven that they have nointention of meekly returning to the Championship without a fight.

They would need plenty of that fighting spirit when the season got underway. Handedthe toughest of starts, against Aviva Premiership finalists Leicester Tigers in front ofthe Sky Sports cameras, the Exiles were given a sobering introduction to life in the topflight. It didn’t get any easier; the following week they travelled to the home ofchampions Harlequins.

The pundits congratulated themselves, but Exeter Chiefs would change all that as EdJackson’s late try and Seb Jewell’s winning conversion gave the club its first everPremiership victory. Perhaps fittingly, after the events of May 30, it came at the Kassam.

Five days later Welsh proved it wasn’t a one-off as they beat Sale Sharks at the SalfordCity Stadium. Narrow defeats to Gloucester and Saracens followed, but providedfurther evidence that the Exiles are here to stay. And with star summer signing GavinHenson back from injury, the Premiership be warned.

For a club which only five years ago was still semi-professional it’s been anextraordinary few months, and there are only more exciting times to come before theseason’s end.

The Old Swan captures the charm of bygone years, throw in a good measure ofmodern convenience, add to it the laid-back atmosphere of the gastro-pub inspireddining room and log-fired bar and you’ll feel like there’s no place like it. The settingcouldn’t be more romantic if it tried.

At the end of another busy week in the In Oxford office, Tina and I headed toShutford, just outside of Banbury, for a real treat. The George + Dragon, run by theengaging Paul and Alison Stanley, is an award-winning 13th century freehold pub, serving five quality real ales.

I don’t think Shutford would be aghast if I labelled it ‘sleepy’ but the restaurantexperience at this fascinating restaurant was anything but. Serving stunning, freshlyprepared, local, seasonal English food, Michelin star trained Head Chef, Simon Dyer, who served his apprenticeship under Gordon Ramsay, is working wonders at this familyfriendly gem.

“Alison and I are really happy to have Simon on board. It’s going to be an excitingdevelopment of our restaurant. We really love fine dining but haven’t known how topush our restaurant a little more into that area. After first meeting with Simon andseeing his ideas I felt confident that Simon would create a menu that would reallyincorporate our community, it also helps his food is delicious!” Commented Paul.

Paul, Alison and Simon work well together, as Simon recognises. “Paul and Alison sharemy passion for locally sourced food. All of our meat served in the restaurant is sourcedfrom farms within a twenty mile radius. A lot of the game is shot and caught by theregulars. I enjoy the challenge of working out what specials to produce as you neverknow what may come through the door. My goals is to create food which his refinedyet unfussy. My favourite item on the autumn menu is Roasted Hook Norton Venisonceleriac and mushroom pave, served with runner beans. The Hook Norton brewery isjust six miles away and it’s great to flavour match real ales with our menus.”

And so to the meal. After burning my menu, not a good start, Tina and were presentedwith the first course. Chicken and pistachio terrine with toasted brioche for me whilstTina had the salt and pepper squid with soya and lemon dressing from the specialsboard. Neither disappointed. I think Tina must have been one of a few so far inlandthat night eating deliciously fresh squid. “Too much pepper?” Enquired Paul as hecollected empty plates. Tina reassured him that the squid was spot on.

As was the Hooky and peppercorn braised feather blade of beef with newpotatoes, which I had for my main course (accompanied by a wonderfulRustenburg 2009 Stellenbosch  red – so wonderful, in fact, that I left with two bottlesunder my arm!) Tina chose Simon’s favourite and was not disappointed either. Ourknowledgeable waitress, Harri, served our finale, a chocolate and malt mousse withmilk ice-cream.

You can’t ask for much more when you visit a restaurant than good service, a warmatmosphere and great food. I couldn’t imagine eating in a restaurant every night insteadof cooking, let alone the same restaurant. But the couple we met as we said ourgoodbyes are as regular to The George + Dragon as you are to your kitchen……..and I’dsay they’ve got themselves nicely sorted!
